The S&P 500 futures trade 12 points, or 0.3%, above fair value after the major indices struggled in a defensive session yesterday. Futures linked to the Russell 2000 are up 0.7% after the small-cap index dropped 3.6% yesterday.
Semiconductor stocks are some of the biggest gainers this morning after Intel (INTC 65.57, +2.07, +3.3%) announced an "IDM 2.0" expansion strategy, starting with a $20 billion investment to build two factories in Arizona. INTC shares are up 3% in pre-market action, and the iShares PHLX Semiconductor ETF (SOXX 414.33, +6.90) is up 1.7%.
More generally, the broad market, including chipmakers, appears to be in a consolidation pattern amid quarter-end rebalancing factors and a wait-and-see mindset for the economic reopening/recovery. The S&P 500 was trading at the current levels in mid-February.
In economic data, Durable Goods Orders for February (Briefing.com consensus 0.9%) will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET, followed by the final IHS Markit Manufacturing and Services PMIs for March at 9:45 a.m. ET. The weekly MBA Mortgage Applications Index decreased 2.5% following a 2.2% decline in the prior week.
The 10-yr Treasury note yield is down two basis points to 1.62% after settling lower the past two days, while the 2-yr yield remains unchanged at 0.15%. The U.S. Dollar Index is up 0.2% to 92.48. WTI crude futures are up 2.4%, or $1.40, to $59.16/bbl after revisiting a six-week low yesterday.
