What first got you into crypto

My life has changed dramatically since I initially got interested in cryptocurrencies, so it's fun to think back to the beginning.

At that time I was about to become a parent for the first time and was living in relative poverty compared with my life now. That isn't to say that crypto has made me rich. I'm mainly a lot better off now because I'm 8 years further into my career in Engineering and now have a well paying job, but Bitcoin and Eth gave me some fun gains at different times. Had I not sold, spent or lost some of those at various points then I would be very well off, but I've always been excited about crypto more as a user than a hoarder...

Anyway, I was first drawn to crypto because prior to hearing about Bitcoin I had an existing interest in alternative currencies and alternative economics more broadly due to my background in both Anarchism and Environmentalism. In particular I had listened to speakers at Transition Towns events discuss about alternative currencies (e.g. the Totnes Pound) and how the financial system as is relates to the "growth at all costs" economy.

When I first heard about Bitcoin, I was excited about the possibility that it might be an environmentally friendly project as it abandoned the steady inflation of Fiat.

This was around the dawn of ASICs and I had no concept of what was going to come next in terms of Bitcoin mining farms...

So, with that background it's not too much of a surprise that I'm now a Nano fan, but I want to stay as open minded as possible about the possibilities of cryptocurrencies and blockchains and would love to discuss with other crypto enthusiasts what excites them about the space and the many emerging projects.
