So, first time posting on this subreddit, but I felt it's time for me to post about Kevin.
This story begins with an unfortunate series of events when hiring a guide for doing winter and outdoor activities including stuff like sightseeing tours with cars and snowmobiles, aurora chasing, ice fishing and wildlife spotting.
Basically a line of promising candidates fell out one after the other, one got in to their dream school, one got an acting gig, one broke a leg and we ended up having to hire whoever we could get on short notice.
This turned out to be Kevin.
Kevin shows up and things start going wrong pretty soon after training, but hey everybody is new at first so we keep trying to help him get better. Mistakes in the beginning where mostly simple stuff like forgetting to do dishes after a tour that includes a bbq, hanging up clothes after guests returned them, arriving late and barely having time to prepare the tour before the guests arrive, you know typical new guy stuff.
But oh boy this was only the beginning.
The first serious alarm bell was when we where having a staff party with a hotel we worked with. The receptionist of this hotel was a lovely young Italian lady who we had good relations with, when walking to the party he casually tells me, his boss, that he's thinking of "Making a move on the Italian chick". This is when I realized the problem was worse than I could have imagined. Panic sets in while I sternly tell Kevin that we do not talk about colleges like this and that it's not proper behaviors with anyone. Kevin just shrugs and says "I think she got a thing for me, Italians love me".
The day after this we start frantically searching for a new guide in the middle of the season. Finding a good guide that wants to come work in the middle of nowhere when the season has already started is not easy, so we have to try and work with Kevin for the time being. What follows is a sample of the things that happened the last 3 weeks Kevin worked for us. There where a lot of little things, so many that I do not remember all of them anymore. But these are the highlights.
Kevin tells a female guest that it's so cold outside his balls are freezing of.
Kevin forgets to pick up guests for a tour because "The booking system is complicated and checking in guests is hard"
A snowmobile is parked in the middle of the driveway to the hotel blocking access to cars left with the key in the ignition.
Kevin smokes a cigarette inside the company car just before picking up guests so the whole car smells like tobacco.
Started a snowmobile sightseeing tour with only the people driving snowmobiles and not the people that he was supposed to pull in a sled.
Kevin invites a couple of guests to come over to his place to have a party at the end of the tour.
Kevin forgets to bring a battery for a camera that a guest has rented for a tour.
Kevin forgets to drive 4 people back to their hotel after a snowmobile tour and just goes home.
Kevin was absolutely convinced that every single woman on a tour that looked to be between the age of 15 and 40 and did not have a man with them where in to him.
Kevin does not clean, not the food prep area, not the clothing room, not the car and not his mess in the staffs common kitchen.
Kevin is asked to take the ice fishing mats out of the car he will be using for a sightseeing tour because we need them when he will be gone. We catch Kevin running around gathering up as many ice fishing mats as he can find throwing them in to his car.
Kevin comes back from a snowmobile tour at night and leaves all the snowmobiles parked like some sort of abstract art pattern across the parking and driveway to the hotel with they keys in the ignition on all of them and he rips down all the clothes in the clothing room to a pile on the floor because he lost his wallet. When he finally found his wallet in the overall he had been using he was so worked up he had to go home and sleep. We found out in the morning the day after when we get woken up at 06:00 by the hotel staff.
After Kevin finally left us we learned a few more quite disturbing things. Had we known them at the time we would have fired him on the spot and just cancelled the tours he was supposed to do.
Kevin was illegally importing CBD oil
Kevin tried to buy cocaine online, paid with bitcoin and got scammed
Kevin had been invited to a hotel room with some guests from a tour, they where smoking weed. Weed is illegal where we are.
Kevin sexually harassed one of the hotel cleaners, she did not come forward until a month Kevin had left.
If you ever realize you have Kevin on your team, trust me it's better to pay him to sit in a room and count the same jar of screws every day than to let him anywhere near your customers. we learned this the hard way.
