USD > BTCLN > XMR: A better way to buy small amounts?

Here's a potentially faster, cheaper, and easier way to buy small amounts of Monero, but it has its tradeoffs and risks like anything. I'm not necessarily recommending the below companies, but they are simply the right combination to accomplish all goals:

  • Strike is an app where you can load USD from a debit or credit card (for now, only in the United States) to a custodial balance. [advantage: zero cost]

  • Strike can be used to pay for traditional Bitcoin and Lightning network invoices without taking possession of the BTC. [advantage: theoretically, no taxable event from "selling" BTC you never owned]

  • FixedFloat is an account-less exchange and the only one I could find that accepts BTC via Lightning [advantage: faster setttlement, lower fee, better exchange rate]

Result: I paid a BTCLN invoice with Strike and received $20 of broadcast XMR in less than 30 seconds for about a 1% overall loss. Alternatively, you could pay with any Lightning app for a similar effect, but likely tax consequences.

This is still a full KYC purchase because of Strike, where you must onboard and be approved like any exchange.

Warning: Do not link a bank account with Strike. They use Plaid like most fintech these days that will access and scrape your entire bank account history to use for their own purposes. Never enter or give your bank login details to any non-official bank app or website!
