The intersection of religion, gender, homelessness

Law Professor Micheal Dorf, at the end of every semester, publishes on the web the final exam questions for his Constitutional Law class. For the first time that I recall one of his questions relate to homelessness.

http://www.dorfonlaw.org/2018/12/con-law-exam-2018-trump-in-space-and.html#more

I have reprinted the question below but you can find it at the link above. Basically, the question asks whether or not it is legal for a city to force residents to quarter homeless people in their homes in times of emergency. FWIW I think as a constitutional matter the answer to the question is YES.

Question 2 Hughes City, Hughes, has long had a shortage of affordable housing, exacerbated by an influx of high earners due to the recent boom in the Hughes high-tech sector. On December 8, 2018, an earthquake struck Hughes. Fortunately, no one was killed or even seriously injured, but the Schwab Homes—a 1950s-era public housing complex—suffered severe structural damage that led to their evacuation and temporary closure. Approximately 8,000 people were displaced pending repairs, which are expected to be completed by mid-February 2019.

Within a day, some of the Schwab Home residents were able to find shelter with relatives both in and outside of Hughes, but many could not. The city and various nonprofit organizations quickly attempted to find them lodging in hotels, motels, B&Bs, and Airbnb’s, but due to the busy holiday season, few rooms were available. As a result, Hughes City, with homeless shelters full to capacity, needed to find emergency housing. About two thousand people were accommodated on cots set up in houses of worship and public and private schools. Still, that was not enough. Mayor Barbara Rachlinski appealed to “the kind-hearted citizens of Hughes City” to volunteer to “open their homes to their neighbors.” Some did. Still the full need was not met. Approximately 700 adults and 200 minors (86% of whom were non-white, despite the fact that the overall population of Hughes City is 53% white) remained without housing on the morning of December 10. With a winter storm coming, the city needed to provide shelter for them. The mayor proposed and by 9:30 am the city council approved the Good Neighbor Ordinance (“GNO”). It provides:

Section 1: All persons owning or renting for at least the next six months a dwelling with at least 400 square feet not currently being used for sleeping, food preparation, or a bathroom shall, by 3 pm today, notify the City that they are able to serve as good neighbors, or else pay a vacancy tax of $1,000 per day per room for each day such notice is not provided. Section 2: If the City learns of the availability of more than enough rooms to accommodate the Schwab evacuees, then a lottery shall be held to determine which rooms shall be used. Section 3: Any person whose spare room is selected for the Good Neighbor program shall receive just compensation in the amount of $0.35 per square foot per night. Section 4: If, after 90 days, repairs are not completed and alternative housing is not available for any Schwab evacuee occupying Good Neighbor housing, a second lottery shall be conducted and the remaining evacuees will be relocated.

63-year-old Karla Billingsworth lives alone in a two-bedroom apartment in the newly trendy Train Town neighborhood of Hughes City. She has a yearly lease that last renewed on September 1, and she pays $2,700 per month in rent. She sleeps in one bedroom and uses the other as a home office, where she has installed four state-of-the-art high-speed computers that she uses to make a living by “mining” bitcoins and other crypto-currencies. Billingsworth also happens to be a lawyer by training. Upon learning of the GNO (as a result of ubiquitous publicity) at 10 am on December 10, she sues Hughes City, the mayor, and the City Council in Federal District Court, seeking an immediate temporary restraining order on the ground that the GNO is unconstitutional.

Billingsworth raises objections under the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Ninth, and Fourteenth Amendments, “plus any penumbras or emanations from those or any other provisions of the Constitution that may be relevant.” Her complaint sets forth the facts as stated above and also includes an affidavit that provides: “I cannot afford to pay the tax. I am a very private person. I do not want a person of any race, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or age living in my home office, and I am especially unhappy about the likelihood of being assigned a border or boarders whose lifestyles will likely clash with mine.”

Billingsworth’s motion seeks to enjoin the GNO “on its face and/or as applied to my circumstances.” The Prayer for Relief also states: “In the event that the court denies full injunctive relief, in the alternative, Plaintiff asks that the City be permitted to assign her no boarder other than a straight white Protestant Christian cisgender female over the age of 30, as sharing her home with any other kind of roommate would violate Plaintiff’s religious convictions.”

Assume that Billingsworth makes the best arguments available. What is the likelihood that she will succeed in obtaining relief?

I received an email with my password in the subject

Yesterday evening I was reading email and seeing my password in the subject alarmed the hell out of me.

I am not really concerned with the threat he’s imposing but i like to know how he got my password. Not too long ago my mail/web server got hacked. I thought it was just a spam relayer and hosting nefarious things

After clearing that up i didnt think much of it. What made me think these two events are related is that the email was sent to an account on the aforementioned server.

So how concerned should i be? I am in process of changing passwords on a virgin laptop and formatting all my systems. Is this overkill? Have you heard of similar scams before?

Good Day, Did you notice an example of your online passwords (x) in the subject of this email? I am going to reveal to you the way I obtained it. A bit of time ago you checked out an adult internet site that was infected with a backdoor that mounted itself onto your system. That backdoor gives me entry into your system, i have collected all your security passwords, accounts, files, data, contacts etc....Regardless if you alter your passwords my backdoor will forever give me complete entry on your software. Apart from obtaining all your data, frequently i also activated your web cam and took a number of shots of you and taped you whilst you "pleasured yourself" watching mature material. So there it is... i posses all your passwords, accounts, documents, information, contacts and also some very nice pics and clips of you serving yourself a great time.Do not be concerned, read on and i will describe how you could make certain this has no unfavorable affect on your existence...... ///snip .

I am still nervous about what’s at stake.

Bitcoin Transaction Event Handling

Are there any events that I can hook into in Bitcoin. For example whenever a block gets accepted into blockchain can I associate a handler and be notified in real time? I suppose one could right some code and modify bitcoin core software, but I'd prefer not to do that.

3/Jan/2019 Alternative

I have proposed an event to audit exchanges several times, however there is an alternative.

Bitcoin IS under attack, it's value does not reflect the sentiment, the network value, network cost, the usage, the user base, transaction volume, supply and demand, or any metric upon which fiat value should be measured.

Value has been disconnected, we can assert that this disconnect is for financial gain. Somewhere there is a cabal manipulating, trading bots replicate these moves throughout different exchanges. Losses and gains are magnified on leveraged trading platforms.

Our alternative, is to research, to stop worrying about price movement and start looking at where it is moving first, then why, then finally expose the who.

You, we, are being robbed, temporarily, what we have created is being undermined, hijacked, attacked.

At what difficulty/hashrate do we say enough, how big must the cold storage coffers of exchanges become, for how long do we suggest paper bitcoins and fractional reserve before we take action and prove it is so.

Bollinger Bands: What are they?

https://i.redd.it/q0b54wbdc9421.jpg

There are many different views concerning technical analysis for cryptocurrency trading and investing. Along with those views, come a host of chart indicators, each with their own stated advantages. Each trader has their own bias on which indicators work for them.

One indicator sometimes referenced in the crypto space are the Bollinger Bands®.

What Are They?

Bollinger Bands (also abbreviated to B.B.) are a charting indicator invented by financial analyst John Bollinger. They comprise three specific lines on the price chart of any given asset. The lines are overlayed on top of price candlesticks, moving and reacting based on the asset’s price action.

According to his website, Bollinger explained he developed his Bollinger Bands based on researching former financial market players and their previous methods. These include Wilfrid Ledoux’s Dow Jones Industrial Average high low curves, and Chester Keltner’s 10-Day Moving Average trading system.

Other indicators like Keltner BandsDonchain bands, and percentage bands are similar but do not account for certain aspects of the market. “Bollinger Bands use standard deviation to adapt to changing market conditions”, Bollinger stated. His bands account for volatility in the market.

Volatility is important to consider when trading crypto. Volatility is basically the state of price movement in the market. High volatility means more dramatic price swings.

The above image is an hourly bitcoin chart for the Bitmex exchange. Each candlestick represents one hour of price movement. The two blue lines and single red line are the Bollinger Bands.

The specific parameters for the lines remain unchanged, even after more than 35 years, Bollinger said.

“20 periods for the moving average with the bands set at plus and minus two standard deviations of the same data used for the average”.

How The Bands Work

As mentioned above, Bollinger Bands are three lines around price action. The middle line is a 20-period moving average. Based on a chart with hourly candlesticks, the 20-period moving average takes into account the past twenty hours of price, concluding an average price for that time frame.

The two outer bands lie two standard deviations above and below the middle line. According to Bollinger, the upper and lower bands “answer the question as to whether prices are high or low on a relative basis.”

Bollinger continued explaining. He said, “Bollinger Bands work best when the middle band is chosen to reflect the intermediate-term trend, so that trend information is combined with relative price level data.”

When volatility increases, the outer bands widen in opposite directions, proportionate to the amount of volatility.

Trading crypto (or any asset for that matter) is a tough game. What may work for one person may not work for another. Bollinger Bands are just one tool out of many that traders and investors can investigate for their personal use.

Lets do the math

Hi,

this will probably get deleted since its a skeptical post but still, lets try it.

I have an income of 3200$ after tax every month. With that I invest every month 1000$ to buy BTC.Lets say the average income is way below and someone can only spend 400$ per month for buying bitcoin.

Currently you get one BTC for around 3200$, so 8 People buy every month 1 BTC in total. We have a lot of hodlers, some traders and both dont want to have less bitcoin at the end of the month.

So we have people who no longer believe, people who have to sell and new generated bitcoins (1800 per day)1800 * 30 = 54000 BitcoinsLets say 80.000 want to get rid of their coins per month.= 134.000

That would mean we need only 1 million people who monthly invest to only keep the price stable.

This Planet has ~7000 * 1 Million people. So 1 million should be really nothing. And 400$ per month, at least for me, dont look very much.

We have around the globe events every week for bitcoin. A big and active community. And still, the price dont appear to have reached its bottom.

What let me consider, where are all the supports, believers, etc? Bitcoin for 3200$ right now, looks really cheap to me.Beside that I sold a lot of bitcoin at 15k and since 3800 I accumulated way more than I had before. And I guess others also do like this.

So either it looks to me people are either afraid, the community is not as big as it looks or there a big players who have a huge short position open?

I was debating if I should post/celebrate this here, but after seeing /r/fierymillennials lessons learned from a break, and after posting here in /r/fi for the last 4 years, I thought I'd share some of my lessons from my career (and maybe sneak in a few questions while I'm at it).

Where I Am Now

As the title (and my flair says) I'm sitting right around FI now! Our household consists of me, my wife who's a year younger and our 11-year-old poodle mix, living in the western US.

I'm a software engineer (full-stack web development) turned Product Manager working a career in tech - but never in what I'd "high tech" cities. Orlando and Salt Lake City have a great tech presence, but they're not exactly in the top 5 (or 10?).

With around $2m saved up and yearly expenses somewhere between $60-$100k, it's looking like we're in decent shape! Over the last 2-years, our expenses have risen as we got married, fixed up a house, went on 2 honeymoons, moved across the country, furnished a new place and settled in. I'm optimistic it'll drop down closer to the $60k side now.

Today is my last day at my job of almost 8 years (!). My wife is continuing to work at this time, with me on her insurance We've talked about it, and she knows she could leave as well. Her working right now makes this much more flexible as we test out our spending levels with one of us not working.

How I got Here Financially

Luck. Hard work at times for sure, and lots of planning, but no one retires in their 30s without luck (windfalls or high income) or cutting expenses so deep that your lifestyle borders some hobo-chic.

My luck came in a few specific fortuitous financial events:

  • Had parents that raised me with a ton of self-control. Learning to have money (even if you're not rich) but not spend it from an early age is a huge benefit.
  • Went to a state school for college and graduated with no student debt. Scholarships and parents paid for everything for the first 2 years, then started working to take over all expenses by the end. I was soooo lucky to not get into the expensive colleges I applied for and have parents who could chip in that $1k/month to live on.
  • Started working on side projects non-stop starting in high school, which helped my marketable skills continue developing (even if they didn't make money).
  • Received an inheritance of $100,000 at age 24 when my mom passed away. Add to that another $150,000 from selling her house. That was in 2007, and the $250k promptly dropped to $150k a year later during the great recession.
  • Worked, without gaps and saved at least 50% of my income each year from age 24 on.
    • Also increased my expenses significantly during that time.
  • Went from startup to startup, eventually landing at one where I worked as hard as I could (sometimes 90 hours a week).
  • That startup was eventually acquired, which was a nice $400k windfall.
  • The company that acquired us went public, which was a nice $800k windfall.

There's a lot of luck to this. I was on my own FI path before this acquisition with a higher FI date in mind (40 if things went well, but probably closer to 44 realistically). Luck and events completely outside my control brought that date down 4-8 more years.

What's Next?

After years working at startups, I absolutely love creating things and providing value to people. One thing I'm most excited about is the time to learn and build things without the need for them to make money. I've done some side projects, but hope to do many more now.

Other than that, the usual winter recreation! Playing Red Dead Redemption 2, rewatching all of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, going skiing and traveling to see family.

Long-term though, time will tell. If our spending is low enough, then we won't need additional income. If it ends up being higher than we expect and we decide we'd rather now lower it, I'd like to find a way to make a little side income without a job through side projects. Luckily there is no rush on that today. We have options, and time to find a passion that makes a little money is one of the best ones.

I do have a few things that I'm trying to do immediately. I'd be curious to hear how others have handled these:

  • Stop identifying myself by my job role, accomplishments or work.
  • Stop setting unachievable expectations for myself.
  • Stop trying to optimize every day and be OK with progress.
  • Start setting boundaries between side projects and personal life.
  • Being OK with the idea that there are days I'm going to wake up where I don't want to do anything.

These are the immediate things I'm working on in my head right now.

What Did I Do Well?

For things that I had control over at least, here's a few that stand out:

  • I think the number one thing was making myself invaluable to companies I worked for. I did whatever needed to be done strategically in the companies - even if that meant changing roles or learning new skills.
  • Stuck with low-fee index fund investing for 95% of my portfolio long term. I made investing mistakes (oh, hi Bitcoin), but they were limited to at max 5% of my portfolio.
  • Tracking spending quarterly.
  • Didn't try to over-optimize investments. Just let time do their thing (helps that this was the best bull market ever).
  • Developed a strong sense of what I wanted out of life outside of work. I have no shortage of things I want to do.

What Could I Have Improved On?

  • I didn't max out my 401k for about 5 of my working years. I didn't have access to a 401k for another 4 years.
  • My spending grew way more than I thought. I should've been looking at my spending monthly.
  • My wife and I have been together for almost 12 years, but we didn't fully join our finances until year 11. We knew about each other account balances/debts, but not as much each others cash flow. Would've been useful in planning to know each other's total spending.
  • Tracking spending monthly would've helped see trends faster.
  • Creating another source of income would have been really nice.
  • Thinking too much about FI at times was a distraction from other, more important goals and parts of life.

Whew, that's a lot. It's been 11 years since I started investing and 9 years since I opened a Vanguard account. Without additional lucky (in the form of those windfalls) I don't know how FI would've been possible without drastically cutting spending during my earning years far more than I did.

That might not be the most optimistic takeaways, but it's an honest one. There's a sliding scale between compromise and luck for retiring in your 30s. I was able to lean more on luck, but that's not a reproducible takeaway. If you do what you can with what you're given that's all you can do - just do your best and be OK with the results.
