In China, they have a surveillance program on social networks which looks like a jerry-rigged PRISM clone of the NSA.

So this social media surveillance program is retrieving (private) messages per province from 6 social platforms and extracts named, ID numbers, ID photos, GPS locations, network information, and all the conversations and file transfers get imported into a large online database.

Around 364 million online profiles and their chats & file transfers get processed daily. Then these accounts get linked to a real ID/person. The data is then distributed over police stations per city/province to separate operators databases with the same surveillance network name

With these "operator databases" the local law enforcement investigate 2600 to 2900 messages and profiles. The name new table per day to keep track of the progress. So they manually review the social media communication (public/private messages).

And the most remarkable part is that this network syncs all this data to open MongoDBs in 18 locations. "r_Capture_Time" : "2019-03-03 02:58:08.0", "r_QQMsg" : "2019-03-03 02:58:08 \"ζ°? 、XXX丶ζ说:!收【【【46--48道士号】】】卖的微信XXXXXXXXXXXぁ"

Massive Database Leak Gives Us a Window into China’s Digital Surveillance State

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/03/massive-database-leak-gives-us-window-chinas-digital-surveillance-state

Earlier this month, security researcher Victor Gevers found and disclosed an exposed database live-tracking the locations of about 2.6 million residents of Xinjiang, China, offering a window into what a digital surveillance state looks like in the 21st century.

Xinjiang is China’s largest province, and home to China’s Uighurs, a Turkic minority group. Here, the Chinese government has implemented a testbed police state where an estimated 1 million individuals from these minority groups have been arbitrarily detained. Among the detainees are academics, writers, engineers, and relatives of Uighurs in exile. Many Uighurs abroad worry for their missing family members, who they haven’t heard from for several months and, in some cases, over a year.

Although relatively little news gets out of Xinjiang to the rest of the world, we’ve known for over a year that China has been testing facial-recognition tracking and alert systems across Xinjiang and mandating the collection of biometric data—including DNA samples, voice samples, fingerprints, and iris scans—from all residents between the ages of 12 and 65. Reports from the province in 2016 indicated that Xinjiang residents can be questioned over the use of mobile and Internet tools; just having WhatsApp or Skype installed on your phone is classified as “subversive behavior.” Since 2017, the authorities have instructed all Xinjiang mobile phone users to install a spyware app in order to “prevent [them] from accessing terrorist information.”

The prevailing evidence of mass detention centers and newly-erected surveillance systems shows that China has been pouring billions of dollars into physical and digital means of pervasive surveillance in Xinjiang and other regions. But it’s often unclear to what extent these projects operate as real, functional high-tech surveillance, and how much they are primarily intended as a sort of “security theater”: a public display of oppression and control to intimidate and silence dissent.

Now, this security leak shows just how extensively China is tracking its Xinjiang residents: how parts of that system work, and what parts don’t. It demonstrates that the surveillance is real, even as it raises questions about the competence of its operators.

A Brief Window into China’s Digital Police State

Earlier this month, Gevers discovered an insecure MongoDB database filled with records tracking the location and personal information of 2.6 million people located in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The records include individuals’ national ID number, ethnicity, nationality, phone number, date of birth, home address, employer, and photos.

Over a period of 24 hours, 6.7 million individual GPS coordinates were streamed to and collected by the database, linking individuals to various public camera streams and identification checkpoints associated with location tags such as “hotel,” “mosque,” and “police station.” The GPS coordinates were all located within Xinjiang.

This database is owned by the company SenseNets, a private AI company advertising facial recognition and crowd analysis technologies.

A couple of days later, Gevers reported a second open database tracking the movement of millions of cars and pedestrians. Violations like jaywalking, speeding, and going through a red-light are detected, trigger the camera to take a photo, and ping a WeChat API, presumably to try and tie the event to an identity.

Database Exposed to Anyone with an Internet Connection for Half a Year

China may have a working surveillance program in Xinjiang, but it’s a shockingly insecure security state. Anyone with an Internet connection had access to this massive honeypot of information.

Gevers also found evidence that these servers were previously accessed by other known global entities such as a Bitcoin ransomware actor, who had left behind entries in the database. To top it off, this server was also vulnerable to several known exploits.

In addition to this particular surveillance database, a Chinese cybersecurity firm revealed that at least 468 MongoDB servers had been exposed to the public Internet after Gevers and other security researchers started reporting them. Among these instances: databases containing detailed information about remote access consoles owned by China General Nuclear Power Group, and GPS coordinates of bike rentals.

A Model Surveillance State for China

China, like many other state actors, may simply be willing to tolerate sloppy engineering if its private contractors can reasonably claim to be delivering the goods. Last year, the government spent an extra $3 billion on security-related constructionin Xinjiang, and the New York Times reported that China’s police planned to spend an additional $30 billion on surveillance in the future. Even poorly-executed surveillance is massively expensive, and Beijing is no doubt telling the people of Xinjiang that these investments are being made in the name of their own security. But the truth, revealed only through security failures and careful security research, tells a different story: China’s leaders seem to care little for the privacy, or the freedom, of millions of its citizens.

Lisk Highlights, March 4th 2019: Lisk, Hong Kong Future, and Costa Rica Past.

Hello there. Here is today's selection of highlights and interesting items within the Lisk ecosystem and beyond.....

Lisk, Hong Kong Future and Costa Rica Past.

Asia Crypto Week is fast approaching (11-17th March) and blockchain/crypto enthusiasts and industry veterans are preparing to gather together, share their knowledge and nurture mass crypto adoption. Among the events taking place on March 15th will be a meetup at the University of Hong Kong catering to the University's Blockchain Club and anyone else that might be in the area and interested in all things blockchain. Lisk is co-hosting the event in collaboration with 9up.io, who are a group of blockchain enthusiasts based in Hong Kong and who also are a prospective Lisk delegate. Max Kordek, Lisk's Co-Founder and CEO, will be the main speaker at this event on the 15th March, as he will be in town from the 10th to 15th for Asia Crypto Week and Token 2049.

Tickets for the event can be secured HERE. Hong Kong has been a strategic position in the blooming Blockchain industry in recent years, so I will be interested to see what emerges from this meetup and indeed Asia Crypto Week as a whole.

Now from the future to the past, and the TicoBlockChain 2019 conference in Costa Rica this past month. Lisk Central America have linked us up with a Stylish Montage Video of the event with interview snippets interspersed within. Software Architect, Jake Simmons, represented LISK Central America with his presentation on 'Scaling blockchain horizontally with Lisk'. Jake's presentation took part in the midst of the conference's speaker collection of lawyers, developers, educators, banking executives, investment professionals, their keynotes, panel talks and fireside chats.

For those of us who could not make the trip we have Lisk community member /u/illuciferium to thank for filming Jake's presentation and uploading it to Youtube HERE. You can also see Jake being interviewed at the conference by Ricardo Barquero, Nimiq Community Manager in this VIDEO. Well done all!

[uncensored-r/Bitcoin] Best guide for getting started with lightning? ?

The following post by justaminerthing is being replicated because some comments within the post(but not the post itself) have been silently removed.

The original post can be found(in censored form) at this link:

np.reddit.com/r/ Bitcoin/comments/awzpss

The original post's content was as follows:

Hello everyone! I've been wanting to learn more about Lightning and I'm trying to find the best resources. I have a few starter questions:

1) Where's the best place to learn what it exactly means? I know it's a second layer solution to help with transaction speeds/them happening off-chain but what does that mean for a consumer vs. a business who might accept lightning payments?

2) I've been thinking about setting up a raspberry pi node but my Linux knowledge is very limited. Is there a good go-to guide for this for someone who needs it explained thoroughly?

3) What would be the best Android wallet to use currently?

Thank you for your help!

Casa Democratizes Multi-Signature Security for Cryptocurrency Transactions

On Thursday (February 28th), blockchain startup Casa announced a pioneering business model for its personal key manager product Keymaster that truly democratizes multi-signature (multisig) security.

Casa, which was founded in 2017 by serial entrepreneur Jeremy Welch (CEO), is perhaps best known for another one of its products, Casa Node, which is "a small, plug-and-play box" that is one of the "the fastest, simplest way to run your own BTC and Lightning Node."

The very cute Casa Node, which looks and feels like a product designed by Apple in terms of both hardware and software, makes it easy to run a full node, allows you to validate the Bitcoin blockchain yourself and to broadcast your own Bitcoin transactions (furthermore, "you don’t have to rely on outside servers for sending transactions" since you can "connect your Casa Node to mobile apps that work as light clients"), and enables you to "support the network and help Bitcoin grow."

There is even a Google Chrome extension that makes it easy to send and receive "Bitcoin and Lightning Network payments on the web using your Casa Node" (the idea is that this browser extension lets you quickly send/receive BTC payments "on websites without leaving the site").

As for the Keymaster product, Casa modestly describes it simply as "the best personal key manager on the planet." Keymaster was Casa's first product, and it was launched in March 2018, according to Forbes. Initially, Keymaster, which bundled multisig support with a white glove service at a cost of around $10,000 per year, was aimed at "people who own from $400,000 to $10 million in crypto assets" and only supported Bitcoin (with the aim to support other cryptocurrencies in the future).

Casa's "Casa’s Key Shield multi-signature technology means you can thwart both cyber and in-person attackers. Each transaction is approved from multiple devices spread across multiple locations, giving you maximum security and maximum peace of mind."

In a blog post published two days ago, Casa CEO Jeremy Welch explained how Keymaster's new business model was going to enable "multisig security for everyone." Welch wrote that Casa Keymaster now supported three keyset types:

  • "Mobile Key for managing small amounts." (Casa's Keymaster mobile app, which is available for both iOS and Android, has been updated to include Mobile Key support.)
  • "2-of-3 Basic Multisig as an entry-level multisig option." (This will be "rolling out to customers over the next few weeks.")
  • "3-of-5 Key Shield for the best security on the market today."

The Casa Keymaster package (i.e. software plus customer support) now has a tiered pricing model, with three levels: silver, gold, platinum, and diamond.

Silver membership, which is free to start, is Casa's "starter kit for securing your digital assets with multisig." This provides two types of security: "2-of-3 Basic Multi-signature (phone, hardware wallet, and Casa Recovery)" and "Mobile Key". Although, "Basic Multisig is free to start," Casa charges a fee of 0.1% of total funds for usage of its Key Recovery Service. Support at this level is primarily provided via the Casa's FAQ guide and community tools only."

Casa calls its Gold membership, which costs $300 per year, the "best self-sovereign deal available on the market" and says that it provides a nice balance of "security, affordability and self-service." Here, you get the two types of security that you get with Silver membership plus these extras:

  • "One Casa Node"
  • "A Trezor One hardware wallet"
  • "A surprise gift from Casa"
  • "Unlimited Key Recoveries for the 2-of-3 multisig"
  • "Direct email support from Casa"
  • "Everything in Keymaster Silver"

Platinum membership costs $1,800 per year. This gives you the same two types of security as silver or gold membership plus the following extras:

  • "One Casa Node"
  • "Phone and email client service"
  • "3x hardware wallets (your choice of Trezor or Ledger)"
  • "3x hardware wallets kept in reserve for emergencies (includes overnight shipping anywhere in the world)"
  • "A surprise gift from Casa"
  • "Exclusive first looks at new products"

And finally, we have Dimaond membership, Casa's "full-service offering", which costs $5,000 per year, and provides the "ultimate in crypto security." Here, in addition to the two types of security that you get with silver, gold, or platinum membership, you get "multi-user signing support for families and teams" and "Inheritance planning." This time, the extras are similar to what you get with Platinum membership, except that you get two Casa nodes instead of one and instead of phone/email customer support, you get a "dedicated client service represenative."

There is also good news for existing customers of Casa. People who have already purchased a Casa node are getting "an upgrade to a full Gold Keymaster package," which means that they will be receiving a new Trezor One hardware wallet. As for the existing customers of the original "3-of-5 Multisig" service for Keymaster, they are being rolled into the Diamond level.

Bitcoin core and LND - questions regarding tor

Hello all!

I'm currently running bitcoin core and also trying out LND, on windows 10.

I've run public nodes for a long time but now I want to learn more about tor integration.

I read this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2yzzmw/if_you_are_not_using_tor_youre_bitcoin_activity/

Is this line really accurate?:

  • You must start Tor Browser Bundle before opening the wallet for it to work.

I currently have the tor browser installed, but it seems bothersome that i have to keep the browser open for the other programs to work. Do i really need to?

I also read this page in the lnd github: https://github.com/lightningnetwork/lnd/blob/master/docs/configuring_tor.md#listening-for-inbound-connections

I'm pretty sure what i want to do is to run a v3 tor hidden service, they say here:

If you want to run v3 Onion Services, make sure that you run at least version 0.3.3.6.

Currently, i have tor browser bundle v8.0.6, but i cannot find any information about which version of tor i have. Maybe someone can clarify the differences between the tor browser bundle and tor itself, i seem to have trouble fully understanding it.

I want to be able to accept incoming connections, both through bitcoin core and lnd, to support the networks. If all I've read is correct, that shouldn't be a problem as long as i set everything up correctly?

Do i still need to forward ports through my router or will the tor hidden services take care of that in some other way?

I think i have found everything i need to put in the config files for bitcoin core and lnd, but i don't know how i can configure tor itself (if i even need to.) Most guides are for Linux and they mention a tor config file. Where does this exist on windows?

I appreciate any answers, explanations or links to guides.

I'm sure some of you are running your bitcoin apps through tor on windows!
