VanEck to Offer Bitcoin ETF Workaround

As VanEck Securities and SolidX Management wait for the green light from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on their Bitcoin ETF proposal, they are rolling out a ‘limited’ version to institutions. The modified investment product will be offered through an SEC exemption — a first for the cryptocurrency industry.

Van Eck Provides Institutional Investors with ETF Alternative

The third quarter of 2019 has been dominated by news and announcements related to institutional products in the cryptocurrency space. Binance and Bitfinex announced cryptocurrency derivatives; Bakkt has set aside the date of their launch and now Van Eck wants to speed up the Bitcoin ETF approval process.

The investment management firm, in partnership with SolidX, plans to start selling shares for the digital asset ETF by releasing a limited version of the product. The limited version of the fund will be aimed at certain institutional investors like banks, hedge funds, brokers – and excluding retail investors.

Van Eck Takes Advantage of Rule Exemption

The two dominant players pushing for a Bitcoin ETF are leveraging an SEC exemption to release a limited version of the fund.

It’s all thanks to the SEC’s Rule 144A, which allows securities to be traded among qualified institutional buyers without SEC approval. Yet, the ‘limited’ ETF will have shorter holding periods and will be available to a very small group of established financial firms.

The SEC is still holding out on a few applications which it recently said it needed more time to make a decision. Three firms, which include Van Eck and Solid X, will find out if they have been successful with their proposal for a Bitcoin ETF towards the end of September and into October.

While this limited version is much closer to the already existing offering from Grayscale Investments as a private fund, Van Eck claims that this will show the regulator that a Bitcoin ETF can work.

It’s undeniable that a Bitcoin ETF has been one of the most-awaited events in the cryptocurrency world for some time, but the SEC is adamant that some of the concerns regarding price manipulation and the commission’s access to monitoring haven’t been sufficiently addressed.

The SEC representatives didn’t want to comment on Van Eck’s move.

Stock trading game

I'm going to be hosting an event where I'd like to teach participants about stock trading. My idea is to make it interactive and have a fantasy stock trading game that they can engage with in real time on their phones during the presentation. Here are the features I'd like it to have:

Each participant starts with the same amount of money
There will be rounds of trading throughout the presentation
I'd like for stock prices to be affected by demand and supply. Currently, I'm thinking something simple like price changes by (1 + (number of stocks purchased / total stocks in circulation)). So a stock at price 1 will change to 1.1 if 10 stocks were purchased with 100 stocks in circulation. Similarly, prices would decrease the more stocks are sold.
There will be random events at the end of each round that further affects the price of certain stocks. Some of these events will be based on data gathered from form submissions by the participants during the presentation. Others might pull real time data like bitcoin price, for example.

Is this possible using Google Forms and Sheets, or is this too ambitious? I have some of the functionality down, but my main issue is tracking. Given the audience, I can reasonably expect people to be honest so I'm thinking of just asking them to enter their name into each trading round's form. In the Google Sheet response, it is then easy to match the trading data to their name. The problem is, in Google Forms, I need a way to restrict their purchases based on the updated price and how much money they have. I also need a way for them to check their portfolio.

Not sure if I've explained this well enough, but is Google Forms / Sheets the right tool for the job here? Is there some other tool that would work better?

How to evaluate an ICO?

ICO announcements seem to be the new big thing. Blockchain entrepreneurs do it to raise money. Investors/Tokenholders are hoping have a return on investment of let’s say 100% — 1000%. The common line of thinking seems to be: I was late with bitcoin, but I could be an early adopter for the next big thing…

Long gone are the days where people mined/bought coins to support the idea of censorship resistant immutable network. It seems like gloves are off for an ICO gold rush. Make money, fast!

New Kids on the Block

And even though many devs and entrepreneurs are still in it for the betterment of society, and to build cool new tools, it seems that profit maximising thoughts are on the rise, bringing new group dynamics to the crypto community, thus changing the rules of the game. Furthermore, with new ICO announcements made on a daily basis, it is hard to keep up with all those new kids on the block. How on earth is one supposed to study and evaluate the viability of each and every new ICO?

Fact is: The underlying technologies are still in public beta, thus immature and prone to bugs and attacks. The only real killer app with some kind of track record so far seems to be bitcoin itself. Everything else is still a prototype, white paper, and sometimes not even that. Business models are untested, network effects almost inexistent.

Just a flashy landing page?

If you have a good look at all the landing pages of all these new blockchains, dApp and DAOs, you will soon figure out, what is what, and what is not, because more often than not, it’s just a flashy website. So how can we distinguish the flashy from the real deal?

I’m well aware of the fact that there is no such thing as an exact science for evaluating investment opportunities of emerging technologies. Maybe the best strategy is to shoot randomly, protect your downside, and hope that something will stick. Nevertheless, this is an attempt to cluster some questions that might be helpful in the evaluation process of a potential ICO.

While this paper is supposed to be an investor’s guide, my principal goal is not to make investors rich but to keep the community healthy. The last thing any of us needs is a crash, inevitable to the hype we are facing right now, with a lot of so called “stupid money” flowing into the system.

What type of token is being issued?

Depending on how you answer this question, a very different set of questions will be relevant.

Blockchain Token
