Does anybody know what happened to u/hellobitcoinworld?

He was a mod here for a short while until stepping down but before that he was extremely active and helpful in this space. He was the creator and maintainer of XTnodes.com (which I think later became NodeCounter.com). He was a frequent contributor during the Bitcoin XT and Bitcoin Classic days and even turned this guide into a community donation-funded project to mine non-Core blocks.

His PSA on NodeCounter drew the ire of Blockstream in Mar 2016, and he was super-active until his last post in Apr 2016. He posted in /r/btc 15 times on Apr 18, and 0 times on Apr 19 and 0 times every day after that. No farewell post or anything.

Is he still around? New account? Does anyone know?

Guide for Cryptocurrency Fundamental Analysis

“Fundamental analysis is a method of evaluating an asset in an attempt to assess its intrinsic value, by focusing on economic growth, financial position, qualitative and quantitative factors among others affecting the asset.”

Cryptocurrency trading has taken shape since the start of 2017 when the market experienced a sharp reversal in prices of the digital assets. During the year the crypto market saw a significant boost in the number of investors buying into the industry. In December through January, early investors made massive gains on their initial investments as prices reached an all-time high.

The current market is on such an uptrend as Bitcoin (BTC) climbed above the $4000 USD mark showing signs of an upcoming bullish momentum. The increase in the price of Bitcoin coupled with the “alt season” we are in is pushing more investors to the field recently. However, before starting to trade on cryptocurrencies, you need to select an investment strategy which falls under two major categories; fundamental or technical analysis.

Check out the top red flags you should be aware of before making a cryptocurrency investment here.

My Thoughts on the UnitedCorp (likely Calvin Ayre & Associates) Lawsuit Alleging Hijacking of the Bitcoin Cash Network by Bitmain Group, Bitcoin.com, Kraken and Bitcoin ABC Developers (TLDR: why it's complete horsesh*t)

So as I posted yesterday I'm now learning about a big lawsuit targeting allies of the Bitcoin Cash community, namely Bitmain Group (CEO Jihan Wu), Bitcoin.com (CEO Roger Ver), Kraken (CEO Jesse Powell) and individual BitcoinABC developers.

According to the linked news release: "the suit alleges that the Defendants collectively engaged in unfair methods of competition, and through a series of deceptive and unfair practices, manipulated the Bitcoin Cash network for their benefit and to the detriment of UnitedCorp and other Bitcoin Cash stakeholders. Their alleged actions resulted in the network losing more than US $4 billion in value as a direct result of the alleged hijacking of the network [...] UnitedCorp alleges that these activities are evidence of not only a violation of the accepted standards and protocols associated with Bitcoin since its inception, but a violation of US antitrust laws..."

Several points... Let's start with a simplification. I think it's highly likely the people behind this suit are Calvin Ayre and Craig Wright, given their stated desires and behavior surrounding the November 2018 hard-fork, and given they did not end up with an unofficial, yet recognized (software) leadership role for the BCH community, which is what they wanted. Apparently there is a video of a Kraken developer alleging secret cooperation between the suit's defendants.

First, even if there was cooperation it's permissible in both the expectations of cryptocurrency communities and weighed against U.S. antitrust law, and I'll explain why. Before doing so, however, I'd suggest if anyone finds disagreement with this view it may also, in the spirit of fairness, be useful to bring a lawsuit against CoinGeek (owner Calvin Ayer) and nChain (chief scientist Craig Wright) for possible similar collusion. I recall reading about resources from nChain and/or Craig Wright possibly setting up miners for CoinGeek Mining with potentially other strategic services which might include advice and/or even finance in an effort to influence the same events named in the UnitedCorp suit. It may likewise be good for these market actors to testify under oath about the extent of any strategic planning or possible collusion.

Part 1 - Cooperative behavior as alleged isn't improper for crytpocurrency communities

Now, let me illustrate why it wouldn't have been improper for any of the aforementioned to have communicated, planned or used strategy surrounding the November 2018 hard-fork. First, as regards cryptocurrency communities, the very act of strategic cooperation is encouraged daily in the form of "pools". These consist of individuals and companies around the world working together, specifically combining collective resources in the form of hash power, to attempt to "win" more blockchain blocks than competitors. The winning of these blocks comes with limited temporary control of some aspects of the network. It is not possible for anyone to have permanent control of the entire network unless they control all software-synced devices connected to the network.

The reason such cooperative activity is not improper is because any individual or entity can join with any other cooperating group! There is no advantage gained by attempting to keep secrets about who may be cooperating with whom, because in the case of some group becoming dominant (winning many blocks) anyone can join that dominant group if there is any public facing pool. More importantly total resources from the point of view of any outside competitor doesn't change, they are only merged, which doesn't lessen the share of blocks still available. Further, even a dominant group can never have total control over all aspects of the network, because several things of varying type make up a complete network, including software and computers and exchanges and other types of business as well as individual users.

Part 2 - Cooperative behavior as alleged doesn't run afoul of U.S. antitrust laws

According to Wikipedia U.S. antitrust law is: law that regulates the conduct and organization of business corporations, generally to promote fair competition for the benefit of consumers.

The key word there is consumers. The reason such laws exist is so consumers are not made to suffer. However, to be a consumer of something there must exist a product. Antitrust laws are meant to, for example, prevent consumers of canned tuna from paying higher prices in the market than they would normally pay if businesses acted as if they were completely cut off from each other. I use this example because this in fact recently happened with tuna in the United States.

Cryptocurrency is different. It's not a product made by businesses to be consumed. Cryptocurrency is the money itself. It's true the cost of the "money" can fluctuate. However, it would not be expected to fluctuate in direct correlation to varying entities working together in the manner indicated by the UnitedCorp suit. This is because the only result of such activities, whether brought about by conspiring or not, is the distribution share of blocks among "nodes" (entities running one version of software or another). However, any proper software will permit economic/transactional activity to continue. Further, the schedule of blocks is not impacted, and it's the schedule of blocks - how often new currency is introduced - that most influences market prices. Other factors influencing price can include speculative perception, such as whether or not a large business, for example Microsoft, makes a notable action with regard to the cryptocurrency; or whether or not entities controlling large amounts of currency on exchanges coordinate buying or selling. These represent the only applicable areas of concern about protection from collusion or useful advantage of secret information. Again, planning simply to attempt to have one group of software participants win a larger share of blocks than others does not generally have any impact on price whatsoever, again, because it doesn't alter the schedule of blocks.

The last point is everything about cryptocurrency is voluntary, including what software anyone desires to run, and whether or not they desire to participate anywhere in the economic system at any time. This means nobody can be forced to do anything, which directly contradicts a key allegation of the lawsuit.

You Asked for It: Fundamental Reasons for Crypto to Explode

No triangles or memes here but if we look at the graph that everyone knows, https://i.imgur.com/y2oqsV8.png, I can tell you why I believe we are in the bear trap phase, and not the despair phase.

Smart Money: People like you, me, friends/family we convinced to get in, whales (rich trust fund kids/hedge funds) that were "smart" to realize the potential of cryptos while Joe Shmo is just hearing of it and thinks its a scam or just too risky.

Institutional Investors: The same week that bitcoin futures was launched is when the price of bitcoin popped and it all went downhill from there, putting us into the bear trap. We are still in the institutional phase and we just had a huge announcement to get us out of the bear trap, that being Fidelity is providing a platform for institutional investors. SEC rules require institutional investors to maintain their assets with a third-party “qualified custodian”. Before Fidelity, the only place that had this was coinbase and that was launched last summer, but no large institution is going to want to use coinbase, just type in coinbase in google and you will hear countless nightmare scenarios (flash crashes, servers crashing during the most crucial trading times, security issues, locked accounts, you name it). Just imagine how difficult it would be for an institution, let alone their clients, to trust Coinbase with millions if not billions of their dollars. Hell you can't even talk to someone over the phone with Coinbase (except for "unauthorized access to your account"). Fidelity is providing a trustful platform for them (tons already use fidelty, its the fifth largest investment company in the world and if its coming here, you can bet its coming to other places like vanguard and blackrock (experts are saying this as well). Another reason they wouldn't want to use Coinbase is for liquidity. Meaning they don't want to have their money in two different places. If they put it in Coinbase, they can only buy crypto with it, well these guys like to move their money around a lot and don't want to be tied to one type of asset. If everything is in one account they can do as they please.

Public Phase: This is when crypto trading comes to places that most people already have access to like Charles Schwab, E-trade, fidelity (retail), and currently robinhood (after they just removed the waiting list in January 2019. Joe Shmo would be much more comfortable buying something from a place he has been using for years but also not having transfer money out of his investment account into another account (bigger deal than you think, its a big step transferring money into coinbase and a much bigger step putting money back into Coinbase after you removed it from there).

China (not a significant reason and pretty speculative): Their HSI stock market index has been only increased 5% since 2015. The nasdaq 100 has increased by 65% in the same time. Investors in China are growing impatient and irritated by the stagnant market. To combat this (and to protect their money from their government) they have been buying up properties like crazy in the US and Canada over the past few years. However the housing market has also been stagnate for the past year. Couple this with the year of the pig (hear me out). The Chinese are VERY superstitious, ask any Chinese person that is actually from China. They don't even have 13th floors in their buildings because its an unlucky number (they just skip that floor number, you would be called stupid and insane here if you did that), they also don't want a house with the front door facing the street because then their "money will run away", and for 8888 yuan ($1,300) was a major resistance level for Bitcoin because the number 8 is considered their lucky number and they would sell at this price. The year of the pig symbolizes a year that brings great wealth, they will use this as a reason to invest (call me crazy, I don't care), but remember that the Chinese have 50% of the money in the world. We also know that China also has 80% of the bitcoin mining pools, and more importantly that 20% of the cypto volume comes from China.

Japan: Their largest bank, MUFG, 5th largest in the world, is developing a cryptocurrency that can handle a million transactions a second. They need to have this in time for the 2020 Summer Olympics because Japan's current financial system won't be able to handle the volume of transactions they expect during the event. Also its a solution to the government's plan to go cashless by 2025. We know that 40% of the crypto trading volume comes from Japan and so if Japan replaces cash with cryptos or even just becomes part of the economy, well then we know what this means.

Lastly here is a technical analysis showing that we have hit bottom because BTC used the 200 moving week average as a support (couldn't show this with ETH because it hasn't been around long enough but we know ETH and BTC are correlated).

https://i.imgur.com/4gTu8fS.png

If we really are in a bear trap, I speculate the price could go to $4,200 by the end of 2020.

A Crowdsourced r/BitcoinCA response to the Canadian securities regulatory framework for crypto-asset trading platforms

If I receive a positive response to this post then I will probably sticky the thread until May 15th (the deadline for feedback to be submitted to the OSC).

Background: https://www.osc.gov.on.ca/en/NewsEvents_nr_20190314_csa-consult-on-regulatory-framework-crypto-asset-trading-platforms.htm

Detailed Document: https://www.osc.gov.on.ca/documents/en/Securities-Category2/csa_20190314_21-402_crypto-asset-trading-platforms.pdf

Question By Me: What is your relationship/expertise/experience with cryptocurrency. Are you a cryptocurrency user, miner, trader, platform builder, business etc? This question is not mandatory, but it's more for the regulator to get a sense of your demographic/where you are coming from.

Questions asked by the OSC:

  1. Are there factors in addition to those noted in Part 2 that we should consider?

  2. What best practices exist for Platforms to mitigate the risks outlined in Part 3? Are there any other significant risks which we have not identified?

  3. Are there any global approaches to regulating Platforms that are appropriate to be considered in Canada?

  4. What standards should a Platform adopt to mitigate the risks related to safeguarding investors’ assets? Please explain and provide examples both for Platforms that have their own custody systems and for Platforms that use third-party custodians to safeguard their participants’ assets.

  5. Other than issuance of Type I and Type II SOC 2 Reports, are there alternative ways in which auditors or other parties can provide assurance to regulators that a Platform has controls in place to ensure that investors’ crypto-assets exist and are appropriately segregated and protected, and that transactions with respect to those assets are verifiable?

  6. Are there challenges associated with a Platform being structured so as to make actual delivery of crypto assets to a participant’s wallet? What are the benefits to participants, if any, of the Platforms holding or storing crypto assets on their behalf?

  7. What factors should be considered in determining a fair price for crypto assets?

  8. Are there reliable pricing sources that could be used by Platforms to determine a fair price, and for regulators to assess whether Platforms have complied with fair pricing requirements? What factors should be used to determine whether a pricing source is reliable?

  9. Is it appropriate for Platforms to set rules and monitor trading activities on their own marketplace? If so, under which circumstances should this be permitted?

  10. Which market integrity requirements should apply to trading on Platforms? Please provide specific examples.

  11. Are there best practices or effective surveillance tools for conducting crypto asset market surveillance? Specifically, are there any skills, tools or special regulatory powers needed to effectively conduct surveillance of crypto asset trading?

  12. Are there other risks specific to trading of crypto assets that require different forms of surveillance than those used for marketplaces trading traditional securities?

  13. Under which circumstances should an exemption from the requirement to provide an ISR by the Platform be appropriate? What services should be included/excluded from the scope of the ISR? Please explain.

  14. Is there disclosure specific to trades between a Platform and its participants that Platforms should make to their participants?

  15. Are there particular conflicts of interest that Platforms may not be able to manage appropriately given current business models? If so, how can business models be changed to manage such conflicts appropriately?

  16. What type of insurance coverage (e.g. theft, hot-wallet, cold-wallet) should a Platform be required to obtain? Please explain.

  17. Are there specific difficulties with obtaining insurance coverage? Please explain.

  18. Are there alternative measures that address investor protection that could be considered that are equivalent to insurance coverage?

  19. Are there other models of clearing and settling crypto assets that are traded on Platforms? What risks are introduced as a result of these models?

  20. What, if any, significant differences in risks exist between the traditional model of clearing and settlement and the decentralized model? Please explain how these different risks could be mitigated.

  21. What other risks could be associated with clearing and settlement models that are not identified here?

  22. What regulatory requirements (summarized at Appendices B, C, and D), both at the CSA and IIROC level, should apply to Platforms or should be modified for Platforms? Please provide specific examples and the rationale.

Goal of this thread: I'm hoping that people will answer some of these questions in the comments. Even answering one question that you are interested in would be helpful, but don't feel obligated to answer all the questions. Anyone can participate. My hope is that all responses can be aggregated into one document and submitted on behalf of myself or another user to the OSC.

If you don't want your reddit username to be included in the aggregated document then please make mention of that in your comment.

Less then professional or trolling responses will not be included.

If you would like to be the person to put your real name on the aggregated submission to the OSC please feel free to make a throw away account and pm me with your details.

UPDATE: I believe this thread got enough positive support to sticky it for the time being and move forward tentatively with faze two.

I view this exercise as an opportunity to give the regulators a strong response from the Bitcoin community at large. A growing trend has been "Blockchain experts" being the only participants in this kind of process, so I'm hoping we can change that and add our collective voice to this process.

Faze two will involve me drafting an introduction and adding comments posted here to a publicly viewable/but not editable, google doc.

I encourage you all to give some thought and consideration to your posts, as low quality posts may be excluded. Please give some thought to punctuation, sentence structure and formatting. The more professional the better. You do not need to answer each question, you can even give a general opinion that does not address any of the questions asked by the regulators.

Furthermore, if you do not want your reddit name associated with the submission, please mention this in your post.

Lastly, if you are a credible Bitcoin enthusiast or computer science expert and would like to publicly represent the collective comments that are accumulated in this exercise, then please PM me with a throwaway reddit acocunt for next steps.

Rogue Bit / $4.99 · Puzzle, Education, Simulation, Adventure · 1 player

explore, hack, escape

A single bit of computer memory became sentient and decided to escape from digital into the real world. Explore RAM, modify bytes and hack machine code and CPU registers to set it free.

The game is about the way computers work internally. Having some programming knowledge makes the game easier, but it isn't required. All the elements required to solve the puzzles are explained in the game.

How does it play? You play the game as a single bit of computer memory. You can invade other bytes around you and thus modify their values. The game features various types of puzzles:

  1. Explore. With ability to XOR into adjacent bytes, you can navigate your way through existing data in the memory. The game automatically marks the bytes you cannot go through without getting yourself overwritten and prevents you entering those. Both binary and ASCII views are available, which you can utilize to find an open path for a particular puzzle.

  2. Decipher programs. Various programs run on the computer you are trying to escape from. The game includes a disassembler showing you the assembly language corresponding to the machine code that is being executed. Don't worry if you don't know any Assembly. There are only a handful of CPU instructions and they are introduced gradually as you complete the puzzles. Reading the assembly code, you can track the program logic, see which parts of RAM it reads and writes to and manipulate data in those locations to get the program to do what you want.

  3. Invade CPU registers. The computer you are trying to escape has a simple CPU with a couple of registers. You can trick the CPU to load yourself into the registers and affect code execution or offload yourself into otherwise unreachable memory locations.

  4. Hack. For some puzzles, it isn't enough to change the data in RAM or registers. You can also change the machine code to get the computer to do different things.

Gameplay Tips: Carefully observe the bytes on the screen and what the CPU is doing. Sometimes you need to read the code in straightforward manner. Sometimes you need to work your way backwards: find the line of the code you want executed and then trace the code backwards to figure out how to trick the CPU to get to that instruction.

The game only has about 30 puzzles, but some of those might take considerable effort to solve. So take it easy and don't rush to the end. If you solve a puzzle by accident, don't go forward until you understand why it happened. You might miss some small detail and get completely stuck on the next puzzle.
