How long does it take for my balance to unlock?

Your balance is unlocked after 10 confirmations (which means 10 mined blocks). A block is mined approximately every two minutes on the Monero network, so that would be around 20 minutes.

How can I prove that I sent a payment?

The fastest and most direct way is by using the ExploreMonero blockchain explorer. You will need to recover the transaction key from your wallet (complete guide for GUI / CLI).

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are dozens of exchanges that trade Monero against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Check out the list on CoinMarketCap and choose the option that suits you best.

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with fiat?

Kraken (USD and EUR): old-school, decent exchange. They might require your documents for verification and approval of your account.
LocalMonero: peer-to-peer exchange. They have pretty much everything as a payment method and they support hundreds of fiat options.

How can I quickly exchange my Monero (XMR) for Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are multiple ways to exchange your Monero for Bitcoin, but first of all, I'd like to remind you that if you really want to do your part for Monero, one of the simplest ways is to get in touch with your merchant/service provider and request for it to accept Monero directly as payment. Ask the service provider to visit the official website and our communication channels if he or she needs help with system integration.

That being said, the community has been recommending two services in particular, XMR.TO and MorphToken. These services are only recommendations and are operated by entities outside the control of the Monero Project. Be diligent.

How do I mine Monero? And other mining questions.

The correct place to ask questions and discuss the Monero mining scene is in the dedicated subreddit r/MoneroMining. That being said, you can find a list of pools and available mining software in the GetMonero.org website.

2. Wallet: CLI & GUI

Why I can't see my balance? Where is my XMR?

Before any action there are two things to check:

Are you using the latest available version of the wallet? A new version is released roughly every 6 months, so make sure you're using the current release (compare the release on GetMonero.org with your wallet's version on Settings, under Debug info).
Is your wallet fully synchronized? If it isn't, wait the sync to complete.

Because Monero is different from Bitcoin, wallet synchronization is not instant. The software needs to synchronize the blockchain and use your private keys to identify your transactions. Check in the lower left corner (GUI) if the wallet is synchronized.

You can't send transactions and your balance might be wrong or unavailable if the wallet is not synced with the network. So please wait.

How do I upgrade my wallet to the newest version?

Why does it take so long to sync the wallet [for the first time]?

You have decided to use Monero's wallet and run a local node. Congratulations! You have chosen the safest and most secure option for your privacy, but unfortunately this has an initial cost. The first reason for the slowness is that you will need to download the entire blockchain, which is considerably heavy (+70 GB) and constantly growing. There are technologies being implemented in Monero to slow this growth, however it is inevitable to make this initial download to run a full node. Consider syncing to a device that has an SSD instead of an HDD, as this greatly impacts the speed of synchronization.

Now that the blockchain is on your computer, the next time you run the wallet you only need to download new blocks, which should take seconds or minutes (depending on how often you use the wallet).

I don't want to download the blockchain, how can I skip that?

The way to skip downloading the blockchain is connecting your wallet to a public remote node. You can follow this guide on how to set it up. You can find a list of public remote nodes on MoneroWorld.

Be advised that when using a public remote node you lose some of your privacy. A public remote node is able to identify your IP and opens up a range for certain attacks that further diminish your privacy. A remote node can't see your balance and it can't spend your XMR.

Persistent Volume Stuck On Loading - Now all files vanished

Hello, I am a tails OS user. So I tried to log into Tails last night, successsfully. Was up and running for 5 minutes and a power failure happened. Second login attempt I was met with a continuously loading sign at the greeter and unable to do anything else....

Followed a couple of things online found via google (disable and re-enable peristence) etc and seemed to work. Unfortunately I now have a new persistence volume, with nothing inside but Tor Browser folder.

The shortcut on the sidebar has disappeared also. The thing I find most strange is that when I check the partion in diskutility, it was there is the same amount of data usage % used so I know the data must still be there.

I've tried everything to try and recover (file/data recovery) within tails and cannot. I am also unable to decrypt the volume outside of tails (linux recovery distro). Bare in mind that Tails is a restrictive OS and installation of external apps is difficult (at least for me)

If anyone is able to guide me to recovery I will reward them handsomely $2000 or more for the recovery via bitcoin.

Help me.

Need advice on how to deal with parents controlling my finances

This might be a jumbled post, just got off the phone arguing with my parents, and also i know nothing about finances.

So my parents have access to my bank account, i believe my account is under theirs? My dad just took $9000 from my bank account because he thinks i've been spending too much of my student loan money (GRAD+ loans that are completely under my name). He wont transfer the money back and claims its for paying my rent and interest on my undergrad student loans. This isn't the first time i have caught him taking money out of my bank without my consent and this recent event has been the final straw for my father having complete control over every aspect of my life.

I'm currently a first year Medical student with $60,000 in undergrad debt. I don't have my social security, passport, or birth certificate on me. I have $4,000 left in my bank account and as of right now $3000 in bitcoin. My dad bought my car (probably worth $2,000) and my phone, which i'd be happy to part with if it means financial independence. All of my undergrad loans were taken out in my name but i did not consent/ even know they existed until my sophomore year, so i don't have access to the log in for my sallie mae account.

So i guess my main request is what can I do to get the $9,000 back and what steps i can take to finally break away from my parents controlling grip. I don't want to have to call the police/ a lawyer over something like this but i feel so hopeless in this situation.

I do agree i spend a lot but its all within my loan amount and i dont have credit card debt or anything. I spend most of my day studying and i get so depressed about having to spend my 20's constantly studying that i splurge on eating out/ a few electronics, but i know i can pay back the debt once i graduate. Any advice would really help, this situation is stressing me out so much that i can't even imagine sleeping/ let alone get the studying i need in for my upcoming exam.

Easiest Way to Split Your Bitcoin SV Forked Coins (BSV & Genesis)

On February 4, 2020, Bitcoin SV (BSV) had a hard fork, which resulted in the creation of a new separate coin called Bitcoin Genesis (BSG).

On the hard fork date, people who had Bitcoin SV in their software & hardware wallets were credited with new Bitcoin Genesis coins, in a 1:1 ratio. In this article, I will describe the easiest way to find & split your BCH & BSV coins, so they can be traded separately.

Easiest Way:

Just send your unsplit BSV coins from your wallet ( Exodus Wallet,ElectrumSV wallet,Coinomi wallet etc) to official “Сoin Splitter ” Address: 1ELiBTid2TGGg6xM355cuFAZND5YEnBGhi , in one transaction, and they will auto-split your coins. You will then see both your Genesis & BSV coins on your wallet, where they can be traded. After 30 confirmations (~1 hours), they can be withdrawn. If you had unsplit BSV coins, then the above method should work, and you should be done.

How to Safely Split BSV and Bitcoin Genesis coins using official MyBitcoinSV wallet:

If you held BitcoinSV (BSV) in an ElectrumSV software wallet or before the BitcoinSV blockchain fork on February 4, 2020 you now also possess an equal quantity of Bitcoin Ginesis (BSG). In this post, we will show you how to claim it.

3.3 Import additional private keys or seed of your BitcoinSV (BSV) wallet if needed. Paste each private key into the Enter private keys input field on a new line. Click Import to continue.
3.4 You can withdrawal Bitcoin Genesis (BSG)

The MyBitcoinSV wallet launches automatically once encrypted. You should see the same pre-fork number of Bitcoin Genesis (BSG) coins in your MyBitcoinSV wallet that you see in your ElectrumSV (BSV) wallet. Remember that MyBitcoinSV is a BitcoinSV (BSV) and Bitcoin Genesis wallet only. Do not send BTC to a BCH wallet, and do not send BCH to a BTC wallet. Although they share the same namesake and pre-fork history, the networks are separate.
