Some thoughts in Q&A format

I've come across recurring questions/statements/ideas that may need to be clarified with specificity and some maybe incorrect, so let us start a discussion here on common Q&A (should follow the number sequence):

1) Crypto has no value (using bitcoin as example) and does not justify its current price in comparison to fiat (usd, world reserve currency) and stock market (shareholders holding equity in a real company with output).

My personal opinion is that crypto is challenging the way we view value due to changes in cultural norms. For example, people today value more work-life balance and put more weight on a lifestyle as opposed to older generations, the shift in values is being reflected in crypto where there is a higher emphasis on transparency, integrity, accountability, and with greater need for independence, people want to be in direct control of their finances. Other notable changes in lifestyle is the new generation are wearing less gold accessories especially Asians. Older generations of Asians tend to see gold as something to be hoarded and used as ornaments/accessories, currently zero of my peers wear any gold or have any gold in their keeping (my peers being middleclass Asians), this is another example of change of values.

Another reason why I feel Bitcoin/crypto has value is that the fact that the Bitcoin network/supercomputer is "256 times faster than the top 500 supercomputers combined" https://www.forbes.com/sites/reuvencohen/2013/11/28/global-bitcoin-computing-power-now-256-times-faster-than-top-500-supercomputers-combined/#282d24cd6e5e .

Well, one may say that so what if it is the fastest supercomputer? Let say there is an 'end of days' scenario where a new virus outbreak is threatening extinction. Bitcoin itself can change their algorithm so that instead of solving useless puzzles, all hashrate goes to solving the formula for a cure from the virus. This is a possible scenario when all life is threatened on Earth. Same ideology holds true if Bitcoin hashrate was devoted into solving cancer and therefore that is why being the most powerful supercomputer with the ability to potentially be a tool for human survival has value.

The third point I will like to point out is that crypto is becoming a humanity project whereby we are trying to have crypto be a reflection of what we want in a utopian world, decentralization, immutability, accountability etc. Clearly it is not yet the perfect solution which is why it is undergoing a lot of innovation, the innovation is a natural evolution of the technology towards a utopian future. There will be ups and downs but there is value in such a project.

2. Past results does not predict future outcomes.

This is a common phrase used by traders/investors. This term is not specific enough and amounts to much confusion. I will like to instead say this, I agree and also disagree with this statement. Agree because one great example is technical analysis (TA), TA uses past information to predict future probabilities. There is no shortage of TA analysis anywhere in financial market yet it is evident enough not a lot of people are making money off it. Steven Levitt's book either Think Like a Freak or Freakonomics has a case study where they prove that wall street economists analysis success rate is less than 50% ( a coin toss). If these economists cannot come up with a good analysis with past results, I will say it will not be easy for the common folk. Yet one may disagree with me on TA if they are making money off it and therefore they prove this statement wrong, in which case I agree with them.

Another agreement with the statement is if a person does not study for an exam, the outcome is quite predictable regardless of his past performance. This is normally true for the common folk (not geniuses).

Biggest disagreement with this statement will be the reason we study history haha.

Conclusion, perhaps it is more important to look at the number of variables in a given event. In terms of financial markets, the variables are surmountable therefore trying to predict future outcomes using history is tough, where else in comparison, someone studying for an exam has pretty much a limited number of variables between him actually studying for it and his health.

Interested in being Anonymous?

This is a guide for people who are ready to take their privacy to the next level. The guide is mainly for people who have some knowledge of privacy tools (such as ETEE, proxy's, and general browsing habits) who are looking to better their privacy. If you are interested, take some time to read it. Even if you are an expert, I would still by thankful for anything else I should add to the guide. If you disagree with something I said, please comment and let me know. Things that this guide include is: difference between Tor and VPNs, should you use VPNs with Tor, how to get computers in a safe way, Windows vs Linux, Tails vs Whonix, basic Linux commands, bitcoins, PGP knowledge, and how to use GPG.

Edit: I am not looking for recognition, I am only looking to spread my knowledge to those who truly need it. Once I get enough suggestions, I will re-post the guide and I will ask for help spreading it. So if there is anything that you can think of to add, definitely let me know.

Has anyone been succesfull in getting Trezor to work with electrum in tails?

As the title suggests has anyone been successful? My understanding is that the Trezor bridge will not work due to Tor causing issues. This means that the only possible solution for now is to use Electrum. The following guide was posted a year ago

[Offer] Free $25 in BTC for signing up for new crypto currency exchange Voyager!

Want a free and easy $25 in Bitcoin? Or potentially up to $2500 (in Bitcoin)? Please read on!

Uber founding Chief Technology Officer Oscar Salazar and Ex-C.E.O of E-Trade and current Blockchain Alliance CEO/Wall Street Vet Steve Ehrlich are opening a cryptocurrency exchange by the name of "Voyager". Once it opens in January, they will give you $25 in Bitcoin just for registering early! You only need to provide your name and a valid email, even a fake email you could make up strictly for this lol. Voyager will also pay you $25 for every person you refer! Easy money! Voyager has no commission fees either, which is nice. Also, as a recent finance graduate (2017 UCO, Cum Laude 😎), you don't even need experience in crypto to capitalize on this opportunity! Also if you prefer regular American dollars to Bitcoin credit, it's easy to exchange the Bitcoin! To qualify, simply sign up here as my referral: https://e.investvoyager.com/4TLA-326U-2LFHS7-2WZGY-1/c.aspx

Non referral code link if you prefer: https://www.investvoyager.com

IMPORTANT: You will also need to OPEN your Voyager account in a couple of weeks when the service is officially available to get paid, so check the emails. For more information about Voyager and the backers behind this service, check out these links; https://e.investvoyager.com/4TLA-326U-2LFHS7-2WZGY-1/c.aspx or https://www.marketsmedia.com/ceo-chat-stephen-ehrlich-voyager/.

Info on how to exchange BTC for American $$$ is here https://coinsutra.com/turn-bitcoin-into-cash/

Happy free money!

The Fine Print 😊All BTC credit is issued in pending status and requires the opening of a valid Voyager account to be claimed.

😊Stay tuned for news about when Voyager launches in your area.

😋Voyager’s promotional and referral programs are currently only available to US residents.

😋Limit of 100 accepted invites. AKA $2500‼️

😎Rewards that are unclaimed within one year of being issued will expire.

I do not make any express warranties in case these Wall Street dudes flake out or your BTC investments don't pan out lol. Ijs it's worth a shot for registering and promoting for free $$$!

HOWEVER, because I believe in these guys and to make it worth your time (if you're still reading), I will personally PayPal $0.50 if you are one of my first 100 referrals and this opportunity does not pay out $25 BTC. Again, only my first 100 referrals. If after successfully signing up early and when it officially launches you still don't get the $25 Bitcoin, MESSAGE ME. Proof will be required! To be clear...If in the event Voyager doesn't pony up but you are not in the first 100 to message me with proof, I will not PayPal you $0.50. 🤷

Be sure to share your personal link with friends for more $$$... $25 per referral! Or Merry Christmas to me and share my post/link lol! Either way let's get this money!!!

If this post is against the rules then I apologize in advance and truly meant no harm, so please remove.

Thanks and happy holidays!

[uncensored-r/Bitcoin] One of the oldest Bitcoin holders began to assemble a team for trading together with the Hedge Fund

The following post by fraer8558 is being replicated because the post has been silently removed.

The original post can be found(in censored form) at this link:

The original post's content was as follows:

https://i.redd.it/5kmkb0t6v0621.png

One of the oldest Bitcoin holders began to assemble a team for trading together with the Hedge Fund!

The idea is based on the fact that the team itself will be formed gradually passing through certain levels, which will show professionals! Each participant who wants to get into the team can do this by showing their results in trading! 13 traders who will go through 5 levels provided by the team will eventually have a fully formed team, receive investments in their fund, manage a capital of over $ 1 million and most importantly receive a share of the company’s shares and will join the board of directors!

To start, a trader must show on his balance a minimum of 10,000 dollars with which he will work later! At each level, traders must show a certain percentage of profit in order to move on to the next! What is the coolest is that all participants will receive help from professional traders at each stage, as the team is interested in the fact that each participant would show himself only from the best side!

The basic information is provided on the platform 13cartel.com with which every trader will subsequently work and receive resources that will help him to achieve the goal.

Many traders are already beginning to massively register with teams to participate in this event, because even if you can’t get into the top 13, you will still get a big profit at every stage of work and build a quality environment!

[uncensored-r/BitcoinMarkets] Why I think there will be a blockchain shitcoinpocalypse

The following post by theSentryandtheVoid is being replicated because some comments within the post(but not the post itself) have been silently removed.

The original post can be found(in censored form) at this link:

np.reddit.com/r/ BitcoinMarkets/comments/a8s34v

The original post's content was as follows:

There are "use cases" for basically 2 or 3 blockchains:

  1. Limited supply immutable ledger for transfer of value;

  2. Smart contract environment;

  3. Larger scale uncensorable data storage/access that can't be accommodated under 2.

That's it. If we get an efficient coin for each of those areas, there is no reason to have any others. If number 2 can reasonably allow for data storage without insane cost, then we only need 2.

Eeeeeeverything else is bullshit and just pollutes the system.

It's why we don't have 2000 email or DNS protocols. It would be a fucking joke. Like cryptocurrency currently is.

A: Hey I want to send you an email.

B: Oh sure, but you'll have to download this app from this shady website because I only use 3mail Cash (3CH). It's the real email.

A: Didn't 3CH just fork? Are you using 3CHAlphabetSoup or 3CHShitOnMyChest?

As soon as a coin appears to efficiently satisfy one of the 3 uses I describe, it will result in rapid mainstream adoption and clear the field for that use. First mover advantage instantly kills everything else off.

If there is a crypto that allows for free and easy and legitimate exchange of value under my first use case, every other value coin dies instantly. If I can pay my taxes and utility bills and a cup of coffee and a multimillion dollar international financing transaction with one coin (which is the only adoption result other than total failure), then I don't need any other coin, or any other currency ever again.

Likewise, if a coin 2 develops a robust and efficient architecture for smart contracts and it can interact smoothly with coin 1 to allow inroads and off roads for currency to move into the smart contact ecosystem, there's no need for any other smart contract system, and trying to have a minority ecosystem is totally fruitless. As soon as smart contracts can be utilized regularly for things like real estate transactions, mortgage funding, etc. as a regular operating procedure, it can become standardized and adopted everywhere.

Trying to have a second smart contract ecosystem just means the system is broken and everyone can't be a part of it. If there are two, they will become interoperable and indistinguishable over time, or one will dominate the other, just like coin 1 did in its space.

The general storage system in my third use case could be comprised of smaller competing chains, but in order to be secure (in the event it is being relied on for public land titles registries or medical records or citizenship documents), it will need to have the highest security. Small chains are of no value because they can't be secured against attack, so it will have to rely on the proof chain work of something at least mostly as big as chain 1 or 2. Whether it is actually a third chain, or whether it is a coordinated reference system built into chain 1/2 is still unclear.

I certainly can't say that I know which of the 3 are going to be.

The level of current adoption that any coin currently has is miniscule compared to what the endgame looks like. I hesitate to give it percentages, but let's just consider coin 1. What would adoption look like for it:

  • ability to natively pay municipal, state, and federal taxes in a supermajority of nations;
  • ability to quickly and easily accommodate 50%+ of global retail transactions as efficiently as current card systems;
  • acceptance at all major and minor businesses and retailers: Amazon, ebay, steam, gas stations, coffee shops, Lambo dealerships, etc.;
  • strong seamless user interface that hides all of the mechanical functions of the system;
  • reliable ability to quickly transfer significant wealth worldwide either as adopted internally by the global banking system, or as a legitimate competitor (threat?) to it.

I would be very hesitant to say that we have reached a significant fraction of 1% on any of the above metrics. While BTC may be ahead of the other coins, the overall progress has been from 0% to very slightly more than 0%.

The real first-mover advantage will be seen when a system moves to 10 or 15%. At that point, I expect adoption to snowball and quickly move to near 100% essentially overnight. Or, it won't happen at all.

Same for Ethereum as a case 2 coin. It is currently the first-mover in the smart contract system, but it is nowhere near efficient or robust enough to satisfy global demand for the things it could be doing. Considering the most successful actual uses for ETH to date have betting apps, tokenized collectibles, and the DAI (which is basically another betting app...), it hasn't even staked out 0.1% of the possibility space.

As for chain 3, as I said, it may end up being incorporated to chain 1 or 2 through reference look-ups and semi-decentralized storage. I honestly am not aware of a solid project in that space. If you have any suggestions, I would be glad to take a look at them. The ones I have seen have been ETH tokenized systems that certainly can't reasonably scale with ETH in its current (or even proposed) forms.

Theoretically chains 1 and 2 could be a single chain, but I think the different efficiency incentives for 1 and 2 make that a lot less likely.

I tested KeepKey + Mycelium + SegWit so you don't have to.

TLDR: you can send and receive Bitcoin to and from native SegWit (Bech32) addresses using KeepKey + Mycelium, but not using KeepKey + KeepKey client (yet?).

Mycelium can import the extended public key (xpub) from your KeepKey, this allows you to get a watch-only wallet on your phone, that can spend only if you connect your KeepKey to the phone.
The xpub is not the private key, the private key never leaves KeepKey, you can not spend from just the xpub, cold storage is not compromised.
It's a nice combination of the accessibility of an app, and the security of a hardware wallet.
My favorite feature is being able to watch the value of my Bitcoin moon plummet from the comfort of my phone.
The Mycelium Android wallet finally got it's SegWit update this month, and I used about a buck in Bitcoin to test the new address format.

Importing a KeepKey xpub into Mycelium

The first thing to note is that if you already had a KeepKey account in Mycelium before Mycelium's SegWit update you'll have to remove that account from Mycelium and reimport it to enable SegWit support.

To import your KeepKey’s xpub into Mycelium you need to connect the KeepKey to your phone using a USB OTG adapter, you can get one for about 10 bucks if one did not already come with your phone.
When connected, open Mycelium, go to the “accounts” tab, tap the icon of a key with a “+”, tap “advanced”, tap “KeepKey”, and enter your pin.

(If you have enabled passphrase protection on your KeepKey then at this point Mycelium will also ask you to enter the passphrase now.
You can read this page for instructions on how to enable/disable passphrase protection:
https://help.keepkey.com/how-to-guides/how-to-disable-a-passphrase
If you want to enable it change the command from “(false)” to “(true)”.
This is an advanced feature so only use this if you know what you are doing, enabling and disabling it has been very flaky in my experience, but once enabled the passphrase feature itself works without error)

Accounts

Mycelium will now scan KeepKey for accounts, if you have multiple accounts on the KeepKey and want to add all of them to Mycelium you will have to go through these steps multiple times to add them one at a time.
An account with zero Bitcoin will not be detected by Mycelium.

You can give the account you are adding to Mycelium a label.
Mycelium will display a KeepKey logo next to the account name in the accounts tab to indicate this is a watch-only account from a KeepKey.

What can I do with an imported account in Mycelium?

Without having your KeepKey connected you can:
-View your Bitcoin balance and it’s fiat value.
-View all transactions including those done through the KeepKey Client app.
-Generate receiving addresses in all three formats, legacy P2PKH (starting with 1), SegWit wrapped P2SH (starting with 3), SegWit native Bech32 (starting with bc1).
-Receive Bitcoin on said addresses and view the incoming transactions before during and after they are confirmed. Note that Mycelium will default to generating SegWit wrapped P2SH receiving addresses, you can change the default to SegWit Native Bech32, but you can not change the default to legacy P3PKH addresses, this is important.

How do I receive Bitcoin with Mycelium?

Choose the KeepKey account from the accounts screen, tap the “receive” button and it will display a SegWit Wrapped P2SH address by default.
You can switch to a Legacy or Bech32 address from this screen, and switch the default from P2SH to Bech32, but not to Legacy.
This means that by default you will always be receiving Bitcoin on a SegWit address.

How do I send Bitcoin from Mycelium?

In order to send Bitcoin from Mycelium you can tap “send”, enter a receiving address, choose an amount and a fee setting.
Next you will have to connect your KeepKey to the phone with the OTG adapter, enter the pin, and enter the passphrase if your KeepKey has one.
The transaction will be displayed on the KeepKey’s own display, you should verify the address, amount and fee.
Confirm the transaction through the physical button on the KeepKey, twice.
Your transaction will be broadcast, you can now disconnect the KeepKey.

How secure is this?

The private key never leaves the KeepKey, cold storage is never compromised.
The only way to sign a transaction and send Bitcoin is by connecting the KeepKey, entering the pin to unlock it, and entering the passphrase to further unlock it if you have one enabled, and then using the physical button on the KeepKey to confirm the transaction.

What does not work?

And now finally, the reason I’m making this post, what does not work.
At the time of writing the KeepKey client app for Chrome is capable of sending to SegWit P2SH and Bech32 addresses.
The KeepKey Client app is however not capable of generating SegWit receiving addresses, nor can it view the balance of SegWit P2SH or SegWit Bech32 addresses.
It also can not send Bitcoin that was received on these addresses.

This means that if you use Mycelium to receive Bitcoin on a SegWit address, the KeepKey Client app does not understand this transaction.
The KeepKey Client app will not add the balance of this address to your total balance, if this was the only transaction in the wallet it will show a zero balance.
The KeepKey Client app will not be able to send Bitcoin that was received on these addresses, you can only do that using Mycelium.
This can lead to confusing situations where Mycelium and the KeepKey Client app show two different total balances for the same wallet, because Mycelium sees the real balance, and the KeepKey Client app only sees the non-SegWit addresses balance.

I fully expect a future update to the KeepKey Client Chrome app to enable full SegWit support so the above will no longer be an issue, but right now receiving Bitcoin on SegWit addresses through Mycelium means you can no longer effectively use the KeepKey Client app until it is updated.
