[Altcoin Discussion] Saturday, February 16, 2019

Thread topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Discussion related to recent events
  • Technical analysis, trading ideas & strategies
  • General questions about altcoins

Thread guidelines:

  • Be excellent to each other.
  • All regular rules for this subreddit apply, except for number 2. This, and only this, thread is exempt from the requirement that all discussion must relate to bitcoin trading.
  • This is for high quality discussion of altcoins. All shilling or obvious pumping/dumping behavior will result in an immediate one day ban. This is your only warning.
  • No discussion about specific ICOs. Established coins only.

If you're not sure what kind of discussion belongs in this thread, here are some example posts. News, TA, and sentiment analysis are great, too.

[CALL TO ACTION] All Exchanges Should Be Transparent With Their Cold-Wallet Addresses

I feel that as a community it is very important to come together and creating awareness to have our concerns heard. We have this amazing community that we can use as a tool to benefit us! Yes, there will always be shills but in reality most of us on here are on the same boat. We have money and/or passion invested in cryptocurrencies. Why not use this to protect ourselves in ways that could improve the future of cryptocurrencies. I want to bring everyone's attention to Exchanges Responsibility For Cold-Wallet Transparency.

I know many of you will argue that it might hinder the security of the exchange. I'm not an expert in the cyber-security field, but I find it hard to believe that this a dead-end with no alternatives. Considering the company's financials are set effectively; these exchanges are bringing in revenue in both bull and bear markets. With such a profitable business, the advantage of having such capital should gives them a wide amount of resources. When budgeting for exchange security, they should also be considerate of investors and tragic events. For those of you that use decentralized exchanges or P2P exchanges, this call to action may seem useless; but just viewing the high amounts of volume of regular cryptocurrency exchanges they clearly dominate this market. We are all human and in the case of a hack or lost funds we react with questions demanding answers. Having the ability to view the activity of cold-wallets (besides Monero), we can at least be able to verify information in the future and also feel comfortable in the present. If you take a look at the top 100 richest bitcoin addresses, you'll notice about 7 exchanges that are transparent with their cold-wallet addresses. This is a great step already, but more exchanges need to follow these protocols, and the ones that are currently transparent should even take a step to add this type of information straight on their website.

Basically, instead of waiting for something to happen in the future to post on this sub or use this sub to shill, we should all start using exchanges that offer this type of transparency. Always use a cold-wallet for the majority (or all of) your own cryptocurrencies. If you are still going to put your keys in the hands of exchanges, at least make sure to only use one that are transparent with their cold-wallet addresses. It may sound useless to some of you, but this will allow us to open source the activities that occur on their addresses. There are many benefits to using a public blockchain, one benefit is the transparency of records, so there is no reason for it to stop there. Lets come together as a community to make this concern worth something. A few exchanges might be more influential than some of us, but no exchange is more influential than all of us.

I don't think enough people are afraid of NodeJS and npm

This is mostly personal opinion, but I think we should be very wary of anything which has an expectation of privacy or security, which relies on the npm ecosystem.

It's deceptive in that it "seems" to be open source, but there's no guarantee that the code on github matches npm, or that the minified code matches the pretty code, and even if you trust the developer, three steps up the dependency chain, you may not. We've already seen compromised packages used even by the likes of Microsoft. That open source module in question had 2 MILLION downloads a week. We're just lucky really that it was only targeting specific bitcoin wallets, but with security, luck isn't enough. The infected version of this module was used by 8 million developers for 2 months before it was found, and even that was mostly by chance.

This acticle explains a theoretical npm attack, similar to ones carried out since that was written.

I think either there are attacks like this occurring, or it's just a matter of time.

These same concerns exist for most open source software, but it's less significant. Just because the code can be reviewed, doesn't mean it is. And obfuscated code can be very, very crafty! I spend my work days reading code looking for my on bugs, I don't want to spend my free time doing the same (nor is there time to review the code of everything I use). I suspect the number of people actually reviewing code is very low—most open source code is only ever understood by those who wrote it. Now I still prefer it to closed source, but I feel too many people see "open source" and think it's 100% ok. It isn't. It's just a good sign. But for NodeJS projects, I would personally rather a well developed closed source project, to something relying on god-knows how many npm packages. It's just an insane model which I don't understand how so many people think it's great. It's only a matter of time before there are some very large breaches because of npm, if they haven't already quietly happened.

tl;dr: I don't trust npm or anything which uses it.

Lightning Torch: BitPanda CEO makes Elon Musk an Offer to Participate in #LNTrustChain - Bitcoin Exchange Guide

https://bitcoinexchangeguide.com/lightning-torch-bitpanda-ceo-makes-elon-musk-an-offer-to-participate-in-lntrustchain/

Happy Day-After Valentine's Day! May everyone find their sweetheart, and have the chance to become a millionaire today! [Drawing Thread #39]

I love you! I love all of you guys!

In Case You Missed It:

TL;DR: Leave a comment on this thread. A random user will be chosen, and everyone donates a dollar to make a millionaire. You are welcome to spread this thread via upvoting, telling friends and family, and sharing on social media! If you'd like to be reminded to donate to the winner by RemindMeBot, click here!

What is this, anyway?

Three years ago, a Redditor posted an idea in /r/Showerthoughts that speculated the fact, if a million people picked a certain Redditor and all donated just $1, they would have the power to make someone a millionaire.

This subreddit is an embodiment of that showerthought, and the monthly drawings are the attempts to make it happen.

We need your help to keep this running, which amounts to only $1 a month to make someone's day. In the long term, that’s $120 every decade, which is a much more affordable price than other expenses. How does it work? Below, you will find an explanation on entering, rules to keep in mind, the selection, and other important things to note.

How to enter:

  • REQUIRED: Leave only one (1) top level comment in reply to this thread! Replying to other comments will not count. It is highly recommended to comment "RemindMe! 3 days Donation for /r/millionairemakers", which will remind you via PM to donate.

Important Rules:

  • Only ONE top level comment per person (replies and subsequent-level comments aren't included), but feel free to reply to other comments. Making duplicate top level comments may result in exclusion from entering. Go to /u/me to ensure you don't accidentally double comment.

  • If, by any chance, you do double comment, delete any extra duplicates ASAP, ideally before the thread is locked, as any chosen draws found to violate this will not be eligible to win, and will be banned from the subreddit.

  • Your account must be older than 30 days with some amount of activity. Throwaway accounts with very minimal activity will also not be eligible. This is to prevent multiple entries from the same person.

How will the winner be picked and how can you donate?

  • After 24 hours and 30 minutes, this thread will close, and the method of selection will begin.
  • While attempts to make the selection method similar to 2017’s have been performed, it still varies from the original. For an example from a prior drawing, see [Draw #36]. For archival purposes, please click here for the original selection method.
  • Method's TL;DR: Your number is assigned by sorting the comments by old, resulting in the first commenter being 1. The list of comments will be publicly released for the community to verify per their own accord. The subreddit then waits for a randomly generated block (a string of numbers) from Bitcoin's blockchain, after a preselected date and time, and calculates the winner using a formula described in the posts mentioned above.
  • Comment IDs are downloaded at 2:00 UTC, three hours following the thread being locked. There will be an official run at the time listed. If it is shown that there are any technical difficulties, the retrieval of the comments will be delayed by an hour, following the same procedures.
  • While not necessary, to determine if you are on the list, please go to your comment and save it. The comment ID is what gets recorded and selected, which looks like this: e3yxpj4.
  • The user who created the winning comment will be informed of their luck and will provide any information necessary for their chosen payment methods (mods will help set this up if needed).
  • The generous Reddit community donates to this lucky person, hopefully making some worthy soul a millionaire! A donation table will be stickied to the winner’s post, giving users the freedom in how they donate.
  • The lucky Redditor follows up with a thank you within the next days, revealing to the community exactly how much was raised and thanking their generosity.

Reminders

  • Take the time you have available now to setup your PayPal, Square Cash, and Google Wallet account, and/or cryptocurrency wallets. (Note: Some services may not be available depending on where you reside.)
  • To buy any cryptocurrencies, you may use Coinbase for purchases using your bank account.
  • To store cryptocurrencies, there are many accessible wallets, and if you win, you will be guided on which ones to download. For Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, it’s recommended to use the Electrum and Electron Cash wallet for Mac, Linux, and PC.
  • Please try your best to donate a $1, no matter who wins. Every single dollar, cent, anything really counts, so please take the effort to remember and go through with it.
  • If you want to be reminded to donate, please comment "RemindMe! 3 days Donation for /r/millionairemakers".
  • Spread the word! The more people who participate, the better this gets for everyone! There has been a correlation between this subreddit making it in /r/all and an increase in donations.
  • Try to cross-post to relevant subs, and upvote. There is a correlation between reaching /r/all and the amount of donations for the winner. (Please don't spam other subs though. We're not trying to make any enemies here.)
  • If you are under 18, please talk to your parents to get their consent to participate and use their help to setup a PayPal account.

MOST IMPORTANTLY

Remember, this is about generosity, making history, and coming together to make someone's life better. It takes three minutes to donate a bit to the winner, whether you're well off and want to donate a couple bucks, or going through tough times and can only donate a few pennies. Every cent counts.

Note about legality: This is NOT a lottery. You don't have to pay to enter. No prizes are given away directly by the moderators of this subreddit (the moderators will never even touch your donations; this is done voluntarily). As for gift taxes, according to the IRS, they're paid by the donor, and any donations under $14,000 is not taxable.

If a lone $1 can get you candy, imagine the possibilities with $1,000,000. You can take a vacation, gift a present, or woo a girl/boy!

One million dollars can reward the gift of love. Spread the word: have your friends and family comment, post the link to your friendly-neighborhood social media network, and share it to anyone interested.

Let's give love to a millionaire!

Love's within the air.

With the heart you are a part.

The Valentine's fair!

Imusify : Change The Way Artists Sell Music And Interact With Fans

Listening to music is easier than it has ever been. Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud are all ready to fill your ears with more music than you could ever listen to. As a user, you pay a fixed monthly fee for this easy access and the streaming service then passes that money on to the artist right? Well, not quite. The music industry in 2018: YouTubers are stars, stars are brands, brands produce content, content is everything, everything is content, and nobody pays for music. Things have changed a lot in the music business recently.

While on one hand, the traditional infrastructure has morphed and shrunk, the individuals who create and engage with the art itself have grown, totally changing the way they think about business, branding, and what it means to have a successful career.

What’s been going on in the music industry over the past quarter century has been a steady development towards decentralization. Where once institutions like record labels, studios, distribution centers, and record sales defined what success was in the music business, advents like streaming platforms, digital audio workstations, and the disintermediating power of the internet have eroded the landscape into a more even playing field.

The potential blockchain technology holds to take the music industry — and the entire entertainment industry, for that matter — to the next plane is multifarious. Whether it’s through crowdfunding, programmatic IP, distribution, event ticketing, ownership of non-fungible assets and collectibles, streaming, blockchain technology and (sometimes, but not always) digital currencies, blockchain can be used to re-imagine the entire process of how music and art is funded, created, distributed, consumed, and all over again.

This is why music and entertainment have become some of the most active spaces in the blockchain world for technological development. Many people may look at cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and think that blockchain is all about finance and deep tech that won’t affect them, but scores of music-centric blockchain startups are proving that not only can decentralization create substantive change in the daily lives of everyday people.

You know all those, low quality, aggressive, badly spelled "bcash lol" type comments... they really could be created by software.

Someone posted this Gizmodo article (archive) over on r/monero . It's about using a Weak-AI to automatically generate sentences that appear to be from humans. The claim is that the OpenAI organisation created and trained such a Weak-AI system. They then fed the Weak-AI the following made up news story as input:

In a shocking finding, scientist discovered a herd of unicorns living in a remote, previously unexplored valley, in the Andes Mountains. Even more surprising to the researchers was the fact that the unicorns spoke perfect English.

The Weak-AI then reportedly, wrote the following all by itself:

The scientist named the population, after their distinctive horn, Ovid’s Unicorn. These four-horned, silver-white unicorns were previously unknown to science.

Now, after almost two centuries, the mystery of what sparked this odd phenomenon is finally solved.

Dr. Jorge Pérez, an evolutionary biologist from the University of La Paz, and several companions, were exploring the Andes Mountains when they found a small valley, with no other animals or humans. Pérez noticed that the valley had what appeared to be a natural fountain, surrounded by two peaks of rock and silver snow.

This story seems plausible to me considering that NVIDIA have recently managed to create a Weak-AI that can create photo realistic human faces. Overview video here. This is something I consider to be even more difficult to pull off than a machine that can create human-like text sentences.

Now consider the quality of the typical "bcash lol" or "BSV is teh reel bitcoin" comment that this sub is showered with. It's far lower quality than the quoted paragraph above.

Imagine you are tasked with manipulating a large community which can't be easily penetrated from the upper levels (as seems to have happened to r/bitcoin , Bitcoin Core, bitcointalk bitcoin.org etc etc). A Sybil Attack is probably one of your best options now. Create division, create in-fighting, create the illusion of popular hatred for your community and project, using lots of cheaply created, fake accounts. Hiring tons of people to do this manually is expensive and makes you vulnerable to having your operation exposed. It would likely be far cheaper and safer to have a small, expert team develop some software that:

  • Automatically created large numbers of social media profiles (including twitter, reddit & facebook accounts).
  • Make these accounts automatically respond primitively to their programmed areas of interest to create a plausible history for them.
  • Guide these accounts to response in a particular, operator-chosen, way in certain communities regarding certain topics.
  • With the addition of that NVIDIA software I mentioned, they can now even add a unique, photo-realistic human face to the fake profile.

I know in my gut that the high level financial powers of the world know exactly what crypto currency is and they know the potential threat it is to their extremely lucrative scams (fiat currency, government enforced, crony banks). I know that if these people are willing to rob and scam almost every man, woman and child on the planet, in all cases resulting in reduced prosperity, in many cases resulting in poverty and in some cases even resulting in death, then these groups will almost certainly be comfortable funding operations to damage, delay and co-opt the cryptos that threaten their empires.

In this time of great technological advancement and mass social manipulation, I think it has become more important than ever to learn to think for yourself. There are pearls of wisdom and useful data out there, but to find them you have to learn to sift through a ton of shit. To do this effectively you need to develop discernment skills.

If you have personally concluded that a particular crypto is awesome (whether that be BCH, ETH or even BTC) and you notice large numbers of people telling you you're wrong, consider for a moment that those people might not be wise, might not be truthful and might not even be human. If they make good arguments, offer useful insights or provide verifiable data, then that may be something worth carefully considering. However, if they are just numerous, noisy and nasty, then I think it's quite reasonable to walk on by and confidently continue striding in the direction that you personally feel is best.

Selling Concept idea for mining operation plan that I was working for years.

Due to personal reasons I decided to sell my bitcoin mining project to a good hands.

Over past few months my life is going downhill just like BTC value does now days. Though I am confident that Bitcoin will recover soon. I feel that I need to step aside to take in some fresh air and be with someone who matters to me the most.

WHAT HAPPENED: 1) 6 days before my birthday, I lost my lovely dog. 2) A few days after New Years Eve in Moscow there was an attempt of of robbing flat where my future wife and her dad lives during which his hip was fractured and he seems to recover slowly after surgery (I must add that about 5 months ago she lost her mom due to liver cancer) 3) Most recently I lost my uncle who 12 year ago helped my family come to Canada 4) My future wife is also a bit ill and I feel that I need to be there now.

About my business:

I am into Bitcoin since 2009 and after I moved from Manitoba to Alberta I decided to go on my own venture into bitcoin mining operations.

I was searching for years on sustainable and cost effective way to run it. Looks like I finally found it. Though I can’t do all that alone and recent life events did took major hit on me financially. I am currently in negotiations stage with Bitcoin Solutions and Hut8mining on potential absorption or purchased my concept Idea and I will help boot up project itself for next 2 years based on executive performance base salary with royalties in mind to whom ever is actually will take the deal. Price for project to become yours is 300 BTC or 1,435,000 CAD in cash. (Open to negotiate the price)

You will get my full support and help to get project up and running.

Good real estate brokers for commercial land to purchase towards the project.

Will get you in touch with legal team to help prepare project for legal ICO in Canada and the US.

One of reputable energy retailers in Calgary.

Must live in Canada and company HQ must reside in Calgary after it becomes yours Pre-ICO White Paper

There will be full disclosure of my plans and ideas for this project for 10 years after project will go live. Many of business aspects that I was planning to do with this project are in my head and not on paper yet. As security measure., So after you pay 50% of asking price come by with other half or whatever half we negotiate.. don’t forget pen and paper or recorder it will be fun and long discussion with some pro-tips based on my long research and analysis of market overall.
