How to Avoid Bitcoin Fraud

https://i.redd.it/qnayslugwfk21.png

(Update: Bitcoin Core is less usable as money due to much higher fees and delayed transaction times. The Core team has also expressed an interest in keeping these fees high since they view BTC as a “store-of-value” and not something to be transacted on a daily basis. In contrast, Bitcoin Cash’s transaction fees cost pennies and payments can be validated even with zero confirmations. These facts make BCH the ideal cryptocurrency for sending and receiving money anywhere in the world.)

“Bitcoin is a remarkable cryptographic achievement. The ability to create something which is not duplicable in the digital world has enormous value. The Bitcoin architecture, literally the ability to having these ledgers that can’t be replicated is an amazing advancement.” – Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Google, March 2014.

With Bitcoin Core’s price increasing over the years and reaching billions of dollars in market capitalization, all kinds of people see its value and appeal. This brings out both the good and bad in human nature. Unfortunately, with the bad comes scammers. The bottom line is scammers also want to profit somehow from Bitcoin Core, but through nefarious means. This typically involves targeting unprepared victims, who end up losing their BTC as a result.

In this guide we will walk you through the most common Bitcoin Core scams. We’ll show you how to spot them, and make sure you don’t become the next victim.

Fake Bitcoin Exchanges

https://i.redd.it/768rfovpwfk21.png

Often on social media you’ll see a link saying something like “Buy bitcoin for 5% under market value. Save big!” This is a marketing trick to get you to visit and use their fake exchange.

If you visit any exchange site the very first thing you want to do is make sure it’s HTTPS secured and not HTTP. This means that the web traffic is encrypted and secured; if it’s just HTTP without the “S” that is a big red flag and means stay away.

Another red flag to look out for are fake exchanges that offer selling BTC for PayPal. On these sites you’ll see a web form to enter your PayPal email and amount to sell. After submitting, you will be presented with a QR code to send your BTC to. But the money never arrives.

Most of these fake exchanges are here one day and gone the next. You will see them pop up but will quickly disappear, and then re-emerge with a different domain name later.

Fake Bitcoin Wallets

Spotting fake Bitcoin wallets is a bit tougher, because wallets primarily are about storing bitcoin and not buying or selling it. It has less to do with money than it does with the software you may use. Typically, fake Bitcoin wallets are just scams for malware to infect your machine in order to steal your passwords or private keys. To ensure security, Bitcoin.com recommends our official Bitcoin Wallet for desktop and mobile users. To browse all of the wallets offered through Bitcoin.com, check out our wallets page.

Just like with fake Bitcoin exchange sites, you should trust your instincts and look for red flags. Does the wallet site use HTTPS? Is the name of the wallet site trying to resemble another reputable Bitcoin wallet by impersonating it? Outside of the obvious, it may be hard to tell if a wallet is fake. A good practice is to ask your peers if someone has used the wallet before. You can do this on the Bitcoin Forum or Bitcoin Reddit.

If the wallet is a downloadable client, another good practice is to check the site for malware. Sites like VirusTotal are a great resource for checking executables to see if they contain viruses.

Phishing Scams

This is a very common scam. Phishing is when someone tries to trick you into thinking they are a trusted company or website by having you visit a fake site.

Typically, phishers contact you via email or through a fake web advertisement. The end result is you go to their website by mistake and either get malware, or lose your bitcoin through a fake sale.

With emails you have to be careful to not take the bait. You may receive an email from a wallet or exchange you already use, either by coincidence or through past database hacks. Maybe hackers obtained your email address on the black market; for example from a Yahoo! or other service hack.

Best practice is to not click on any hyperlinks in an email or open attachments. Go directly to the website if you have to do business there. A common tactic is to make a hyperlink look real, but if you hover over it you will see the fake website URL. Always check the sender email to see where it’s coming from (although this is not 100% reliable as emails can be spoofed).

With fake web advertisements, you have to be careful on the site you are visiting. This usually happens when searching on the web for things like “blockchain.” The top result could actually be an advert via Google for example, but may end up being a fake Bitcoin wallet. Best practice is to not visit sponsored ad content in search results, and just manually type the real website address directly into your browser.

Ponzi Scams

https://i.redd.it/1mu9fysmxfk21.png

Ponzi scams are promises from websites that you will “double your bitcoin” overnight, or some similar outlandish claim. Ponzi sites may be harder to spot, but they’re easy to figure out once you understand this: the only way to double your money is to first send it to them.

Ponzi sites also typically have referral programs, so if you get others to sign up for the site by visiting your affiliate link, you may make a few cents. This is another red flag, as many times you will see on social media shared links with referrals within the URL. Usually it will look something like this (referral link is in bold): domain.com/ponzi/?ref=12345

Cloud Mining

https://i.redd.it/z334u6svyfk21.png

This can be a bit tricky because not all cloud mining operations are scams. Some are completely legitimate, however many are scams, so it’s best to warn people (especially newcomers) to be careful when looking into cloud mining.

For the uninformed, cloud mining is shared mining hashpower, where people pool their funds together to rent Bitcoin mining machines. For legitimate operations, this works and can be profitable. For scams, returns may be low or non-existent. As we’ve previously established, it’s best to trust your instincts and look for red flags.

Does the site use HTTPS? Did you find the site from a referral link on social media? Does the cloud mining operation not give any insight into what pool they use to mine, or let you select the pool you want to direct your hashrate to? These are just a few things to look for; you can read some other tips here.

We recommend the Bitcoin.com Mining Pool, which is a legitimate cloud mining pool that offers the highest block rewards in the space with 0% fees. The pool also has very competitive hashrate plans that you can buy. The pool is completely transparent on how it’s run, by whom, and how much return on your investment you will gain. Additionally on your account dashboard you will see charts and information with exact details on any mining contract you purchase.

How Do POW Projects Benefit From Sidechains

https://i.redd.it/8gwfc3gw6ck21.jpg

How Do POW Projects Benefit From Sidechains?

The majority of cryptocurrencies inherited their consensus mechanism from Bitcoin. The consensus mechanism ensures that the network agrees on a single transaction history and the method Bitcoin uses to reach this agreement of all network participants is called Proof-of-Work (PoW). Although this method has proven itself over more than ten years by now from a security perspective, it does come with certain limitations.

Proof-of-Work blockchains that are using the original consensus mechanism introduced with Bitcoin are limited in transaction throughput, have fairly high latency and a limited ability to scale.

Sidechains present an elegant solution to build on top of PoW blockchains, without having to change the core protocol too much. The protocol is a set of rules and conventions that govern the communication of all network participants. Applying changes to the core protocol is difficult. First, you need to make sure there are no security flaws and second, you need to convince the majority of developers, nodes operators, and miners that the changes are beneficial to the network.

A sidechain is a blockchain in and of itself, but with the capability to communicate with a second blockchain, the mainchain. This communication doesn’t just allow the transfer of information, but also of assets, such as a cryptocurrency.

Sidechains only require a single change to the core protocol, namely enabling the deployment of sidechains in a secure way. After this capability is introduced, any developer can start building on top of this blockchain. If the Sidechain implementation is well written, malfunctions or bugs on a sidechain cannot affect the mainchain.

Depending on the exact implementation, a sidechain can be very different from the mainchain and tailored exactly to the needs it should serve. In can use a different consensus mechanism to agree on the order of events and a number of parameters can be modified. You could increase the block size limit so that it can record fairly large amounts of data, or you could reduce the block time to allow for faster confirmations of blocks.

Horizen is working on a sidechain implementation that will allow a number of different consensus mechanisms to be used for their sidechains, with a unified protocol to send assets, in this case, ZEN from the mainchain to a sidechain and vice versa.

Horizen has a robust roadmap and is actively working on building out a sidechain solution as well as an SDK - a Software Development Kit. This will allow developers to choose from a number of functionalities for their sidechain, simplifying the development process. The engineering efforts are led by Alberto Garoffolo.

Benefits of sidechaining

Scalability: Sidechain implementations will be completely decoupled from the mainchain, which significantly improves scalability. Only cross-chain transactions going from the mainchain to a sidechain or the other way around will be recorded on the main blockchain. Transactions within the sidechain are not recorded by the mainchain, meaning there can be a large number of them, depending only on the sidechain itself.

Security: Adding features to a public blockchain is always a difficult task. As mentioned above it needs consensus building within the community as well as a thorough evaluation of the code from a security perspective. Sidechains allow us to add a large number of features with a single change to the code base. After the deployment of sidechains is enabled once in a secure way, a large number of them can be deployed, each of them offering different features.

SDK: Releasing the SDK and a reference sidechain will enable users to start designing and building applications on top of Horizen using different programming languages and protocols. This makes our blockchain attractive to developers, as they can build features with their language of choice.

The Horizen Team is looking into a number of specific use cases for our sidechain implementation:

  • We are developing a treasury system for the DAO in cooperation with IOHK. The main purpose of the DAO Treasury and voting model is to establish a decentralized and censorship-resistant funding mechanism for the development and maintenance of the Horizen blockchain platform. The voting system for the DAO based on liquid democracy will be built on a sidechain.
  • Migrating the logic for the Secure and Super node tracking and payment system from running off-chain to on-chain. Currently, Node tracking is done on external servers. Moving the process to a sidechain will decentralize this process and make it highly censorship-resistant.
  • We plan on building a distributed VPN service running on our node network. Node operators will be able to choose if they would like to support this service by making their nodes available as a possible endpoint for the VPN connection. In turn, they will get paid by the VPN user. The payment logic will most likely be built on a dedicated sidechain.
  • A dedicated sidechain can be build, that allows extended smart contract functionalities.
  • Another potential use case for a sidechain is to facilitate a decentralized and secure registry of public keys for encrypted emails. Email addresses could be linked to the corresponding public keys so that you don’t need to exchange public keys before you can start a secure communication via email.

Technical Details:

The construction of the sidechain model consists of two protocols: The sidechain consensus protocol  and the cross-chain transfer protocol. While the sidechain consensus protocol takes care of establishing an order throughout all the transaction on a given sidechain, the cross-chain transfer protocol establishes a set of rules on how assets are transferred between main- and sidechain

Horizen’s Director of R&D Alberto Garoffolo developed the SCP and CCT independently of each other. This is what allows different consensus models on different sidechains, without having to adapt the mainchain.

The main innovation is a new backward transfer protocol, that allows transactions from one of the possibly many sidechains back to the mainchain, without the mainchain having to track the sidechain and without introducing a centralized federation of validators. While a reference implementation of a sidechain consensus protocol will be provided, a wide range of sidechain consensus protocols will be possible.

The cross-chain transfer protocol is to be unified and fixed by the mainchain logic so that all sidechains will use the same CCT protocol.

SOMESING - Problems And Solutions

SOMESING is committed to addressing big challenges that the current music industry faces. In the current system, SingLovers pay everything. The current system of the Karaoke application product provides music covers and foots its administrative, marketing, and platform management expenses using the profits gained by its SingLovers user fee.

On the SOMESING platform, SingLovers will pay nothing. All of the SingLovers worldwide will have free access to more than 400 thousand Karaoke music covers including K-Pop and other different genres at any time.

Secondly, in the current system, SingLovers receive nothing. SingLovers users are content creators because they compose their own piece of music, which is in popular demand. However, the creators do not benefit from their work, as they have been unable to gain any rewards of profits from their creative work.

On the SOMESING platform, things will be different. The ecosystem is designed in a way that users will receive a fair share of the profit. This is based on the platform’s effort in designing promotions and events. Besides, the profit sharing at SOMESINGis automated and profitability calculated based on SingLovers’ contributions without any systematic interruption or manual modification.

Bitcoin node with pruned mode, monitor for new blocks and its transactions.

I set up blocknotify option on bitcoin node for my app to get notice when new block comes out.
After via jsonrpc block is retrieved, later its transactions.
Not sure why, but for some reason usually half of transactions is missing from my node, I am able only to see hash of transaction received trough block.
Should my node validate whole block(including transactions) before trigger blocknotify action ?
Should I give a time to a node after blocknotify event?
I made jsonrpc request after request to retrieve transactions content with minimal timeouts of 100 milliseconds.
It is really annoying to be forced to recode btc node for each simple task that basic application need.
As far I have seen, btc nodes are really poor in giving basic ability to applications needs other then mining purpose.

February 2019 Activities Recap provides comprehensive update on recent PundiX news

by Peko Wan

Dear Pundians,

A busy February saw us bring on a host of new XPOS merchants, new features for the XPhone and intended compliance updates to adhere to the everchanging regulatory landscape ahead of the launch of the Function X.

To stay in touch with all the Pundi X news, please follow our Medium page. Otherwise read on for a summary of what we’ve been up to!

New merchants across the world

The global rollout of the XPOS continues apace and we like to highlight some of our favourite new merchants in the Pundi X ecosystem from our official Twitter page.

Here’s our newest additions for February:

DZ9 Hostel — Niterói

DZ9 Hostel has activated the first XPOS in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The hostel not only offers an affordable, comfortable lodging option but also becomes one of the pioneers that can accept and top up Bitcoin, Etherum, BNB and NPXS through the XPOS device for their guests.

Address: Rua Joao Pessoa, 351, Niterói, RJ, Brazil.

Pundi X @ MWC19

More than 100,000 participants converged upon Barcelona in late February for the world’s biggest mobile technology fair.

Pundi X, Function X and the XPhone were, of course, front and center.

Our CEO, Zac, kicked off the event with an address on how blockchain technology was shaping the future at the prestigious MWC Ministerial Programme.

And demonstrations of the XPOS and XPhone were made to Mustafa Jabbar, Minister of Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology of Bangladesh.

The rest of the week saw us presenting in a meetup hosted by BitBCN and Hola Blockchain with Brave Browser for over 100 Spanish blockchain enthusiasts and exhibiting as one of the most popular booths in the MWC conference hall to spread the word about the new capabilities for Function X.

Pundi X rolls on in Dubai

Dubai, a tech hub for not only the middle east region but the globe, has been one of the places which the XPOS has been most warmly received.

So we were pleased to attend the largest experiential tech festival in the Middle East, STEP, at Dubai Internet City in mid-February.

https://i.redd.it/8h4zbok6y9k21.png

Over 6,000 attendees from tech startups, investors, entrepreneurs and influential speakers saw Constantin Papadimitriou, President, and Kester Wong, Product Analyst, discuss broader trends in decentralized vs state-backed digital currencies and how the region was leading a push toward mass adoption for a tokenized economy.

NPXS listing on Bithumb

Starting from February 28, NPXS is available for trading on Bithumb, one of the largest crypto exchange in Korea. Bithumb provides the Korean Won (KRW) trading pair for NPXS. Bithumb has also announced its support of NPXS monthly unlocked token distribution.

https://twitter.com/BithumbOfficial/status/1100954399285772288/photo/1

Accelerated token unlock for NPXS and NPXSXEM

As we told subscribers early in February, we’re implementing with immediate effect changes to the token unlock scheme for the Pundi X project.

Where previously a three-year roadmap for token unlocks was envisioned, we’ll now be executing those that remain over an expedited period from April 1 to the end of June this year.

The decision has been taken by our legal team for reasons of compliance and does not affect the total value of unlocked tokens. June 2019 will be the final month for the distribution of token unlocks. You can read more about the finer points on acceleration, including distribution dates, in our initial announcement.

2019 — the year of compliance

Last year was many things for the rise of blockchain. But this year is all about compliance within the fast-evolving international landscape for regulation of blockchain businesses, says our Chief Legal Officer, David Ben Kay.

What does that mean for Pundi X? Three big themes have emerged.

  • Ongoing and open communications with regulators and monetary authorities in jurisdictions where we operate. In jurisdictions that are supportive, we will accelerate deployment; in those that are not, we will exit.
  • More compliant processes: KYC processes across our products will be strengthened.
  • More secure products: For example, by enabling 2FA for the XWallet.

Read David’s entire analysis here.

And that’s a wrap for month two of 2019. As ever stay tuned to all our official channels for regular updates on the business. Until next month!

I Gave Up on Job Hunting and Turned to Fraud (Now I Need some advice to become a legitimate developer)

I graduated with a Computer Science degree from a fairly decent school years ago. I do not consider myself the best or brightest for the job market, but I never turned down a job for being beneath me. I applied endlessly to entry level jobs and have been fairly ignored. The only ones getting back to me are jobs that I applied for out of desperation in the service/retail industry.

So for a couple of years I worked at a grocery store after college, working early morning shifts without missing a day and stacking shelves. I do as much learning as I can, learned multiple programming languages and have built a few nifty programs, but I'd still get ignored no matter what. I changed up my resumes endlessly, gotten career advice from counsellors, have gone to networking events, and nothing has ever really panned out. Ironically, Counsellors have told me that my resumes and cover letters are good and they're puzzled as to why I'm ignored and almost never get an interview or offers. I applied to jobs outside of my field, and again ignored unless I wanted to work in a temp job as a secretary.

I've been doubting myself for not even being able to get an interview, and if I do interview, getting a rejection letter every single time. I had an email from Amazon once, but they said my skills weren't what they needed at the time. I tried again, refining on interview skills and everything I studied just to get another rejection. I had a couple of other interviews where the jobs were really misaligned with my skills, so I started giving up.

Out of frustration (and looming student loans), I found myself resorting to making money from less admirable means.

I've had run ins with the dark web before but never took it seriously. So I used some money I made from my grocery store job to buy credit cards, and long behold I was good at carding things. First shop I carded made about $400,000 dollars in a span of 3 months. Then I moved on to check fraud using stolen identities and made quite a bit more. It's very tedious creating drop accounts with banks to work for check fraud or ACH fraud, but it's been working consistently to fund a lifestyle I would've had if I was working at Google or a blossoming tech startup, so I've been somewhat addicted to the life. Instead of working an 8 hour shift unloading boxes, I've been living a healthy lifestyle, exercising, partying, travelling overseas, and putting more time to reading and learning (learning Spanish and Mandarin). My girlfriend and family think that I work as a freelance developer, but I've been making money fraudulently now for at least 3-4 years. Since I was using bitcoin to cash out, I was able to make some decent speculative gains in late 2017, enough to buy a house in the city without a mortgage and buy a decent car. I always paid taxes too, so the IRS isn't really after me.

I've been competent enough to make up projects out of my head and make up details that could fool other people in my field. But eventually I decided to actually hire a couple of freelancers to help me make some of these projects real, so that's what occupies my resume at the moment.

The problem is that I don't want to be a fraud for much longer, it's to the point where I know that if I continue, I will probably be caught. But I don't want to just be a lowly unemployed person with a software degree if I can't sell my software or my skills as a developer or manager. It's been several years since my studies, and I feel like I'm just going to remain ignored.
