Why Cryptocurrency Taxation was a problem worth Solving?

Hello Entrepreneurs!

It's been a year since we started BearTax and serving a lot of cryptocurrency traders in consolidating, processing and providing tax necessary documents. We just wanted to explain the complexity involved and why the problem was worth solving.

Cryptocurrency like Bitcoin is traded on thousands of exchanges across the world — to be exact 16002 as of today as per Coinmarketcap.com. So complexity here is,

  • Its price changes every second.
  • It’s different on every exchange.
  • It is traded 24x7x365 days a year — Market never sleeps, unlike stocks!
  • Imagine not just Bitcoin, there are 1500+ of those!
  • Trading one crypto to another is taxable — how do you calculate gains in Fiat(normal) currency like USD? Can do for one, what if you’ve converted Bitcoin to Ripple & used it to buy Litecoin, withdrew from an exchange for safety & deposited it back to buy Ethereum, used it to buy some tokens in an ICO (an IPO equivalent here).
  • Which of those actions are taxable and which are not?
  • How do you keep track of prices every second if you are a day trader?
  • When you look at your trades at the end of the year, how do you reconcile everything?

We have built BearTax as a solution for all this confusion, which can do it all for you — Just in a few minutes!

Yes, it can understand what is a taxable event, it knows how to smartly match deposits and withdrawals to keep right purchase price assigned for a quantity of digital currency, can fetch the price for any given timestamp on any day for more than 1500 cryptocurrencies, it can derive fiat transactions from crypto to crypto transactions (Eg: Buy ETH with BTC meaning selling BTC for USD and buying ETH with USD).

If you have traded cryptocurrency in the past and looking for a solution to help consolidating them all and get tax documents as either 8949 IRS form or export it to TurboTax Online, give it a shot. www.bear.tax

If you have more than 250 transactions, TurboTax has a limit and even your accountant will freak out - so download an aggregated format of 8949 or TurboTax online CSV in that case.

[uncensored-r/CryptoCurrency] Quant Network review - the only internet-scale ANY:ANY interoperability protocol

The following post by mr_sonic is being replicated because some comments within the post(but not the post itself) have been openly removed.

The original post can be found(in censored form) at this link:

np.reddit.com/r/ CryptoCurrency/comments/ayrfc1

The original post's content was as follows:

Quant Network has been in the top #100 for a month, slipping out as of today, with just 2485 token holders. I think the project's flown beneath the radar for many!

Here's the low-down:

Intro

The CEO Gilbert Verdian founded the ISO TC307 standard for blockchain in April 2016, where 52 countries now collaborate to implement a standard that will be adopted globally. Standards are a pivotal component to adoption, as they essentially represent a commitment made by numerous entities to use a particular technology or format.

A key aim of standardisation is to ensure interoperability between multiple DLT/Blockchain implementations and, in doing so, reduce the risk of a fragmented ecosystem. Gilbert Verdian is the chairman of the SG7 workgroup on "Interoperability of blockchain and distributed ledger technology systems". Work into the standard is ongoing and it is planned to be finalised no later than 2021.

Blockchain Standards Workshop, Australia

Quant Network aims to provide the technology for enterprise and startups to take advantage of DLT's, by making it possible to connect to blockchains using just 3 lines of code in less than 8 minutes. Unlike other interoperability solutions Overledger isn't a blockchain and doesn’t require fundamental system changes to use the technology. It is more apt to call it a blockchain protocol, comparable to the internet protocol TCP/IP. Overledger facilitates routing between blockchains by using a verification block, which not only helps ensure that consensus times are kept to a minimum, but also handles double spend and forking issues across different ledgers.

Overledger Architecture Model

The team launched Overledger last November, demonstrating 4 multi-chain apps running on Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and Hyperledger:

The product is at full release for the Enterprise version of Overledger for permissioned blockchains. The current open source version will be connected to permissionless blockchains by the summer, currently it's test-net only.

Overledger can facilitate cross-chain atomic swaps, and Zero Knowledge Proofs are possible using the teams patented TrustTag solution: Trusttag allows the tokenisation of assets to be used on the blockchain and to easily connect off chain data to onchain.

Interoperability is not just limited to transferring value between blockchains via atomic swaps but messages / data can be used by adding a hash of a message to the metadata of a transaction on any blockchain which facilitates the interoperability without having to add another blockchain by utilising the trust and security of the source blockchain.

All communication is encrypted on the client side. Overledger is not affected by forks or updates of underlying blockchains, as it abstracts the messaging layer from the transaction layer, sitting above it.

Their ICO finished April last year, followed by a token burn in September as the team only raised $10-11M of their $40M ask. The ICO Price was $1.51 and pre-sale 94c. The first draft of the Token utility paper was released in January. The Treasury function will be completed by the second half of the year, so we can probably expect an updated Token utility paper between now and then.

Crypto Chico gives a good 3min tech-dive intro and Blockchain Brad has done 3 great interviews. Crypto Zombie does a longer 13min tech-dive.

Team

In recent appointments, Gilbert Verdian was the Chief information security officer (CISO) at NSW Health (Australian Government), Deputy CTO at HM Treasury working with Cabinet Ministers and the Chancellor responsible for securely transforming Central Government Departments including the systems that are critical for the operating and running of the UK economy. Responsibilities covered Downing St, Cabinet Office, Bank of England, Financial Services Authority, and the Debt Management Office. He was also the CTO at UKFI, responsible for rapidly establishing the agency during the financial crisis to take ownership of £350B worth of toxic assets from the banks. As CISO for PayUK, previously NPSO - Nation Payments Scheme Operating, he was responsible for the security for all payments in the UK, £6T per year.

In the past, Gilbert worked for the Federal Reserve on their Secure Payments Task Force, founded the, Bank of England Cybersecurity committee, Australian Government, Ministry of Justice, BP, HSBC, and VocaLink (a Mastercard company).

Gilbert currently serves as the Chair of DLT for healthcare in the British Government.

Jean-Paul Dejong, Chief Architect has worked across Government in Defra, HMRC, Border Force, National Crime Agency, Ambulance Radio Programme and Europol. At UK Border Force he introduced the first interactive pre-departure checking system in Europe. He’s worked as solutions architect in the private sector at KPMG, Compaq and Citibank and PrimeLocation.

Colin Paterson has worked in working in cyber-security, for the last 16 years in large Fortune 100, FTSE 100 and Government organisations around the world: AI and penetration testing at Barclays Bank, Prudential, Nationwide, Guardian. He co-founded machine-learning, cyber-security and AI firm Trudera with Gilbert Verdian 11 years ago. He invented the TrustTag patent to solve the counterfeit problem in supply chains, it’s evolved to prevent fraud and is a key component of Overledger.

Co-founder and advisor Paolo Tasca is adviser on blockchain technologies for EU Parliament and UN, founder and advisor for UCL Centre for Blockchain Technologies and former lead economist for Deutsche Bank. Tasca recently stated that "Enabling cross-chain communications — including the recognition and transfer of transactions — is not dissimilar to opening borders to allow international trade. It will usher in a new era of digital economic growth and prosperity not unlike the industrial revolutions of the past."

The ISO/TC 307 standard is being adopted and promoted in the EU by:

Token utility

The Overledger network decouples the transaction and messaging layers of the underlying blockchain, adding support for off-chain smart-contract execution and storage.

The token protects the service from denial-of-service attacks. QNT is required and locked up as a license to access the network on both public and enterprise (permissioned) chains, is payment for read and write operations and to access multi-chain apps (mApps). Dev’s can choose to pay for QNT ‘gas’ on behalf of the user, choosing to monetise their app through a different channel (advertising, fiat subscription etc) - allowing for seamless experiences without the need of Metamask or 3rd party extension. mApp users pay in fiat currency, and the Treasury function handles the purchasing of QNT.

In the second half of the year the team plans to decentralise their network by allowing Enterprises and additional Cloud Service Providers, as well as t...

BitCoin - Got 2018 1099-K, No 2018 BTC Trades just Account Closure

Do I need to file anything if I received a 1099-K, but didn't trade in 2018 just transferred USD out?

Paid Tax on All Prior BTC Trades (2017)

So prior to Christmas 2017 Bitcoin was high and I didn't want to stress out over the holidays so I cashed out all of my BTC into USD. I did report my BTC trading profit accurately on my 2017 return and paid my fair share. There was a 2017 1099-K that made it easy to report.

No 2018 BTC held nor traded, Got 1099K Anyway

The coin exchange I used emailed a 2018 1099-K for me in early 2019. I was surprised. I pulled my exchange records because I very intentionally did not hold any BTC for all of 2018. It looks like I held no BTC in 2018, but emptied all of my USD that was sitting idle in the account. That USD final withdrawal transaction looks to be what the exchange reported on the 1099-K. Looks to have cleared just after New Years Day when my normal bank accepted the funds.

Do I Need to List The 1099-K?

Do I need to report this transfer of USD from an exchange account to my bank? In my head, I already reported the total trading profit on last year and paid the tax? Does the new 1099-K have to be added to my return as is? Do I report it somehow as a "zero profit" trading? Or is closing the account and transferring USD not qualify as a taxable event?

Tax Help- Crypto lost on hacked exchange

I bought bitcoin November 2017 and sold around its peak on January 3rd 2018 or so, making back about 2 1/2x my money. I then transferred that money into a less reputable exchange (bitgrail) which basically stole my money and locked it up while the altcoin (nano) crashed. It’s still locked up and worth nearly nothing.

I’m okay with the stolen funds as i understood that as a risk, but I don’t want to pay taxes for the gains on bitcoin when all my money was lost almost immediately afterwards, due mostly to forces outside my control.

Is there a way to report those lost funds as a capital loss so to help offset the capital gains on bitcoin? There are currently a number of lawsuits in Italy based on this event that I could site and reference.

Thanks!

Quant Network review - the only internet-scale ANY:ANY interoperability protocol

The team launched Overledger in November, demonstrating 4 multi-chain apps running on Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and Hyperledger:

In the second half of the year the team plans to decentralise their network by allowing Enterprises and additional Cloud Service Providers, as well as the community the possibility to host an incentivised "gateway". It is still to be confirmed how gateway operators would be incentivised, the team is considering a dual token system.

At the time of writing, 16% of the QNT circulating supply has been registered by developers working on Overledger applications.

Upcoming news

  • Team is currently working with over 70 clients, at different stages. They are meeting with global multinationals, central banks, government agencies and UK / US banks.

Nano How 4: Proof of Work

Tl;dr Every block in Nano contains a small Proof-of-Work (PoW) that is used to discourage spam. When a block contains a proof with a value below the threshold, it is discarded by nodes in the network. If the proof is valid, then the block is processed.

Proof-of-Work

The term PoW was coined in 1999 though the concept behind it dates from a 1993 journal article. It was initially designed to combat email spam, forcing the sender to incur a computational burden in order to have its email not be immediately rejected by servers. In theory, scaling this computation to a large number of emails (the case of spam) would be impractical.

PoW was largely popularized by Bitcoin, the first decentralized cryptocurrency network. Its purpose is to prevent double-spending by having miners compete for the solution of a [nowadays] very difficult math problem that requires a large number of blind attempts to complete.

There are several PoW functions available to use. For cryptocurrencies, the ones of interest can be categorized in two schemes:

  • CPU-bound, where faster processors (or graphics processors) can more quickly obtain the proof.
  • Memory-bound, where the computation speed is bound by memory latency or bandwidth, which is expected to not evolve as quickly as processor speed.

Why

In Nano, PoW is used only to discourage spam transactions. Without it, and given the asynchronous nature of Nano’s block lattice, anyone would be able to push valid transactions to the network at a theoretically infinite rate, which would quickly saturate nodes in terms of bandwidth and other resources.

As such, and as we saw in a previous Nano How, every block must contain a small proof.

A commonly asked question is “Why do receive blocks require PoW?”. While the complete answer is more complex than what we intend to go on, it is discussed in detail here. Basically, it is used to discourage from creating high depth forks in the network.

How it works

The ideal proof of work is a mathematical problem that is really hard to calculate but simple to verify.

  • Generating PoW - To generate the PoW, the system cycles through the same calculation with slightly different numbers each time, until it gets an answer above the required threshold. This process can take millions of attempts, consuming time and resources.
  • Verifying - Verifying the proof is a very quick process. The value of the proof is calculated and checked against a predefined difficulty threshold. When a block contains a proof with a value below the threshold, it is discarded by nodes in the network. If the proof is valid, then the block is processed.

Nano currently uses blake2b as its PoW hash function, a CPU-bound algorithm, due to it being very fast to verify. It is noteworthy that this could change in the future should a more appropriate solution present itself.

https://i.redd.it/rtsv38qhgwk21.png

In order to enforce a new PoW for every block, the equation that the proof must satisfy depends on the previous block’s, as follows:

https://i.redd.it/ghpc415lgwk21.png

In this equation:

  • nonce is a random 64-bit value which is changed in order to try achieve a valid proof
  • threshold is predefined in Nano with the value 0xffffffc000000000.

As the equation depends on the previous block, there is the special case of the first block (open block) of any account, in which the account’s public key is used instead (read the first Nano How).

While generating a proof requires, on average, 67108864 nonces to be tried (hence the same number of hashes), in order to verify a proof only a single blake2b hash is performed. This means that if it takes one second, on average, to obtain a proof, it will take 14.9 nanoseconds to verify it.

Dynamic and Prioritized PoW

Up until version 18 (Dolphin) of the nano node, all blocks were treated equally, in the sense that they were processed in a random order or in the order that they arrived. However, in cases of a large transaction rate in the network, nodes might get a great amount of blocks in their processing queue.

In the upcoming version 19 (Solidus), if the network becomes congested then blocks will start to be prioritized by the value of their PoW. Essentially, this means that in the case of network congestion, anyone can have their transaction be prioritized (e.g. if it’s urgent) by computing a higher value proof. It is simple to achieve this effect, as only the threshold has to be changed (to a higher value) when generating a PoW.

The intended effect with Dynamic PoW is to further discourage spamming the network. The most effective spam, currently, is pre-generating blocks and proofs, then pushing all of them to the network at the same time. In this event, the nodes in the network will quickly find that the block processing queues get saturated. By using prioritized PoW, non-attackers will still be able to transact at normal speeds by generating a larger value proof. Note that the attacker can’t change the value of their proof in this kind of spam, as they have already pre-generated all blocks and proofs.

Casual users of the Nano network can spend additional time pre-computing their next PoW so that their transactions are prioritised, while larger services can use auxiliary services such as DPoW to quickly provide PoW on demand for their transactions.

The following post by AutoModerator is being replicated because some comments within the post(but not the post itself) have been silently removed.

The original post can be found(in censored form) at this link:

np.reddit.com/r/ BitcoinMarkets/comments/aylwxq

The original post's content was as follows:

Thread topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Discussion related to recent events
  • Technical analysis, trading ideas & strategies
  • General questions about altcoins

Thread guidelines:

  • Be excellent to each other.
  • All regular rules for this subreddit apply, except for number 2. This, and only this, thread is exempt from the requirement that all discussion must relate to bitcoin trading.
  • This is for high quality discussion of altcoins. All shilling or obvious pumping/dumping behavior will result in an immediate one day ban. This is your only warning.
  • No discussion about specific ICOs. Established coins only.

If you're not sure what kind of discussion belongs in this thread, here are some example posts. News, TA, and sentiment analysis are great, too.
