New Bitcoin asset profile from Messari

Hello r/Bitcoin

We've ramped up the profile pages for all of the top crypto assets https://messari.io/asset/bitcoin/profile

Each profile is loaded with a ton of new information from project history, investors, advisors, regulatory information, contributors, roadmap and a whole bunch more.

Our analysts put together a concise overview of Bitcoin governance, among other things:

Model Overview Bitcoin governance is the process by which protocol rules are decided upon, implemented, and enforced. Users (full nodes) adopt new rules according to their subjective views on what Bitcoin is and should be. If two or more individuals adopt the same set of rules, they form an inter-subjective social consensus of what “Bitcoin” is. It is in this respect that many conceptualize Bitcoin as being set by a social contract. Every time rule changes are contemplated, the rules of the contract are decided and renegotiated continuously between stakeholders. Protocol changes are legitimized when users agree to adopt the new changes. Once adopted, the Bitcoin protocol automates the enforcement of the social contract.

Process Overview Protocol development is governed by a proposal process whereby anyone in the open source Bitcoin community can submit Bitcoin Improvement Proposals ("BIPs"). After debate by the community, when consensus has emerged, the Bitcoin Core maintainers merge code changes into Bitcoin Core's GitHub Repository. Once new code has been implemented into the Bitcoin Core specification, users of the network (full nodes) must be persuaded to adopt the new changes. Protocol changes are “ratified” on-chain when the majority of the network adopts the upgrade and doesn’t break consensus.

Once rules are adopted on-chain, all new transactions and block proposals are subject to the agreed upon rules. Full nodes only accept new transactions and block proposals that are valid according to the rules of the Bitcoin protocol. Anything that is not valid will be rejected. Thus, miners must implement the prevailing rules of the network in order to participate in the block creation process.

User Activated Hard Fork 2017's User Activated Soft Fork Event provided an illustrative case study on Bitcoin governance in practice.

As early as 2010, shortly after Satoshi implemented a block limit into Bitcoin, discussions around block size began. These discussions largely stayed in the background until 2017 when tensions within the Bitcoin community rose over rising transaction fees and increasingly divergent opinions on scaling Bitcoin. In May 2017, a meeting between miners, businesses, investors, and core developers took place at the Consensus conference in New York, in what is now referred to as the "New York Agreement". The product of this meeting was an agreement to support SegWit (a soft fork) and a 2MB block size (hard fork).

Known as SegWit2x, this proposal was backed by over 80% of the network’s hash rate. However, despite the desires of miners, users wanted to activate SegWit without the block size increase. This plan was proposed as BIP 148, a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal, from a pseudonymous developer named Shaolinfry. Soon after, users set a date (August 1, 2017) where Bitcoin would soft fork to support SegWit and keep the 1MB block size. Eventually, enough nodes signaled support for it, forcing miners to accept or have their blocks rejected by the network.

Many see this user-activated soft fork (UASF) as a pivotal moment in Bitcoin’s history. The philosophy underpinning the event was that users controlled the network, not miners. The event not only illustrated the balance of power within Bitcoin's network, but also calmed suspicions that parties such as miners, businesses, or Bitcoin Core developers, controlled Bitcoin.

Spedn 0.2 released and ready for Nov 19 protocol upgrade

https://preview.redd.it/xd5ww7lygpy31.png?width=478&format=png&auto=webp&s=93de83fc0c17c622d89eaba257e18352b7cb1481

Spedn is a high level smart contracts language for Bitcoin Cash. A new major version 0.2 has just been released.

This is 15th Nov 2019 hard-fork compatibility update with a bunch of changes and new features.

  • Introducing an array type with syntax [type; length], for example [Sig; 3] signatures, [byte; 10] message. The compiler type-checks the lengths so for example a type of message . message expression will be inferred as [byte; 20].
  • Syntax for tuple assignment now allows its items to be of different type: (int a, Sig b, PubKey c) = expr;
  • Array elements can be accessed with x[i] syntax.
  • Introducing a bit type. In practice only arrays of bits are useful, as they represent a type of checkbits argument in the checkMultiSig function which was upgraded for Schnorr support. Bit array literal is also introduced, ex. [bit; 5] checkbits = 0b00110.
  • As mentioned - checkMultiSig accepts an additional checkbits argument, as described in Nov 15 hard-fork spec.
  • For a byte array of unknown size there is [byte] type which replaces the former bin type.
  • Introducing (UTF-8) string literals, ex. [byte] message = "Hello, World";.
  • Introducing custom type declarations (type aliases) which can be placed before contract declarations and then used as any other type in the contract. Ex. type Message = [byte; 10];. Actually, Sig, DataSig, PubKey, Ripemd160, Sha1, Sha256, Time and TimeSpan are defined internally as aliases.
  • Introducing separator; statement that compiles to OP_CODESEPARATOR.
  • Introducing fail; statement that compiles to OP_RETURN.
  • Introducing checkSize(x) function that returns true if the runtime size of a byte array matches the declared type.
  • Variable names can now contain underscores, ex. [byte] my_string.

For developers of v0.1 there's a short migration guide which shows how to adjust an old contract code to the new syntax.

Why Did the Gift Card Industry Grow So Quickly?

https://preview.redd.it/vwy2h6n9uny31.png?width=465&format=png&auto=webp&s=ea2d8121e1db54c234447bbef66b7be927ad9db5

If we take a focus on gift cards for a moment, there really is something to learn.

For one, gift cards have grown faster than Apple stock since they were invented by Neiman Marcus retailer in 1994. However Blockbuster in 1995 advertised them in the front of the store, and in 2001 Starbucks created the first re-useable gift card, which lead to explosive growth of the gift card over the next 20 years. Today, one of every seven purchases made with a gift card is at Starbucks.

Now the U.S. gift card market is $80B per year.

https://preview.redd.it/eifvqzo0vny31.png?width=477&format=png&auto=webp&s=574b891818b5d2b5fc3dc3459c8a07f370647d8c

3 Lessons from the explosive gift card growth

Well for one it's worth our attention because gift cards have grown in scale faster than about any company during that time period.

1. People don't enjoy shopping for presents.

- Gift cards solve a problem for many people, specifically that gift giving is an annoying last minute expensive stress most people experience around holidays and birthdays. The convenience of a gift card shows that you care enough to choose the right retailer for the recipient, buy also gives enough freedom for the person to choose exactly what they want. Also don't underestimate the value of not having to wrap a gift card, and consider they are perfect for company grab bag events.

2. Companies love gift cards, and thus market them.

Gift cards can only be spent at one retailer, so gift cards allow merchants to get paid upfront for future purchases, presenting a valuable cash flow advantage.

In addition to upfront cash, gift cards are valuable for retailers because 2-4% of gift cards go unused, which is free cash for the retailer.

https://preview.redd.it/9shq3y79vny31.png?width=452&format=png&auto=webp&s=be20b4fdee608594b952b4f83a9f599d10d84760

Since the inception of the gift card market, many other sub-markets have risen up. There are companies (Blackhawk, Incomm and others) that provide the technical and operational infrastructure to supply and manage the gift cards for retailers. This is a big task, especially internationally as fulfilment, fraud prevention, and software infrastructure provide tough challenges at scale.

Another large and growing market is the second hand gift card market, companies (Redeeem, Raise.com, Paxful, and many others) allow people to trade unused gift cards for cash, bitcoin, or other gift cards.

I hope this was helpful and you took away a few lessons from the gift card market!

Dash Impulse — Dash Ambassadors — Remittances Solution to Venezuela

We, Richard Jerez, Edgar Caballero and Freddy Rauseo, promoters of Dash in Venezuela, with the experience gained in the leadership of @dashlosteques and @dashvlc, communities allied to Dash Venezuela, independently launched Dash Impulse, an organization designed exclusively for the impulse of Dash Digital Money in Venezuela.

We present our best proposal for the promotion of Digital Money Dash:

Problem:

In Venezuela, merchants currently receiving payments with Dash complain worry about Dash’s low liquidity in the domestic market, few transactions are made, people do have not massively found find the need to change the use of the dollar to pay for their purchases. Using dollars in cash is very risky for the consumer and the merchant. There is also the issue that commissions charged by conventional remittance houses are too high between 12% and 20% and are not convenient for sending low-value daily remittances for the large number of Venezuelans living in Cúcuta and Medellin.

Solution:

We put liquidity of Dash in the hands of Venezuelans, through the sending of Remittances to Venezuela, giving as the first option that people can decide where to spend it or simply change them to VES, additionally we will educate the merchant in how to consider Dash as an investment and safeguard of value when receiving these Remittances, to sell the dash received on the Platform to be promoted.

https://preview.redd.it/kmxbo9z39py31.jpg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3aeb2270ad51e3dfc7fa78d12041088c2f33717

Currently, remittances are the second largest source of economic income in the country, after the export of oil, with an estimated $ 3.7 billion for 2019, with a projection of more than $ 5 billion by next year 2020. Dash Impulse aims to bring a percentage of these remittances to the Exchange Houses that use Dash.

Initially, Dash Impulse will promote the organic sending of remittances to Venezuela from the Colombian cities of Cúcuta and Medellín, educating Venezuelan migrants to use the platforms that allow them to buy Dash, thus avoiding the high commissions paid in exchange houses that normally operate with LocalBitcoins. Additionally, Dash Impulse will recover and/or maintain, as much as possible, the merchants adopted so far, so as not to let them confuse with other cryptocurrencies such as BCH.

https://preview.redd.it/y8m0s6nc9py31.jpg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c338b18b3a8166a151eb7f9f2e4e9c5c4f8d6125

The other line of action of Dash Impulse will be the promotion of commercial adoption in Venezuela, starting with the cities of Caracas, Maracaibo and Valencia where a large number of Dash accepting merchants is already thriving. The goal is to teach the merchant to directly process purchases of products made by Venezuelans abroad, with the purpose of being delivered to their relatives in the country. Those purchases would be processed with Dash.

Adoption Strategy

Colombia Team:

Functions:

Advertise and promote the sending of remittances through some of Colombia’s exchanges, such as Daexs, which allows you to make Dash purchase transactions with Colombian pesos in real time and at a very low cost. This method will allow recipients to receive up to 12% more than what they would receive using a conventional exchange house.

With the support of the Leaders of Venezuela, a series of meetups conference will be held every month in each city to the general public, especially for Venezuelans, in order to impart knowledge about remittances with Dash.

Colombian ambassadors offer advice and training to those interested in the following topics:

1.1.- Send remittances directly to your family members using Dash, which has an additional 12% benefit, when it is done by the same person, without the need to do so through the exchange office.

1.2.- Buy Dash, post on DAEX platform and exchange, to make the delivery in VES to your relatives in Venezuela.

1.3.- Buy Dash and in turn acquire essential products in Venezuela and make purchases through a Marketplace that accepts Dash.

1.4.- Recruit sellers of private remittances, from the city of Medellín and Cúcuta, to Venezuela, instructing them in the use of Dash to send remittances.

Venezuelan team

Leaders

2.1.- Promote alliances with the other Dash proposals worldwide and especially with the proposals in Venezuela.

2.2.- Coordinate with Venezuelan businesses and companies so they know how to receive Dash.

2.3.- Coordinate with the top 20 or 40 merchants or businesses, assemble a list of combos that in turn build a list of sites that offer combos to sell in Dash, promote by social media and directly from person to person.

2.4.- Develop volume business to increase acceptance.

2.5.- Achieve commercial alliances with companies that, through a discount strategy, promote the use of Dash as a means of payment for the purchase of their products. The buyer will get the product cheaper when acquiring if he uses Dash instead of fiat, or other cryptocurrencies as a payment method.

2.6.- Carry out promotional events in universities and business chambers.

2.7.- Promote the use of remittances through Online Marketing in conjunction with the top 20 or 40 merchants or businesses.

2.5.- Develop volume businesses to increase the acceptance of wholesalers to make their payments and transactions with Dash.

2.6. Safeguard and preserve our merchant base, to avoid having them switch to competing coins, avoiding threats made by previous Dash teams.

Ambassadors:

Functions:

3.1.- Inform existing traders about the continuity of Dash’s operations in Venezuela and Colombia, clarifying that Dash does not depend on any centralized entity or local organizations.

3.2.- Identify and incorporate merchants with the potential to convert them into commercial Allies and receive remittances, sell combos of their products and services, trade on exchange platforms, in other words, convert them into liquidity agents, through education in cryptocurrencies, raising the level of commercial adoption in order to achieve profitability and financial independence.

3.3.- Select the traders with the greatest potential in interesting areas for migrants (Top 20) and help them in the development and implementation of combos systems with delivery or removable in their facilities to increase their sales.

3.4.- Each ambassador in Venezuela will develop a conference a month in their city, with the support of the leaders, with the objective of informing and encouraging their relatives abroad, about how they can send their remittances through our platform with Dash.

Members of the work team.

Colombia Team:

1.- Juan Ortega, experienced Remittance operator is our ambassador in Medellín.

2.- Ernesto Rodríguez, experienced Remittance operator is our ambassador in Cúcuta.

Venezuela Team:

1.- Michael Gil, experienced Dash promoter, is our ambassador in Caracas.

2.- Darwin Ramirez, experienced promoter of Dash, is our ambassador in Maracaibo.

3.- Marcos Ledezma, experienced promoter of Dash, is our ambassador in Valencia.

Deliverables at the end of the three month proposal:

1.- Share the experience of this project with the other communities so that they can develop their own business organization in their different regions.

2.- 20 private remittance sellers, in the two cities in Cúcuta and Medellín.

3.- 120 shops between the two cities Cúcuta and Medellín.

4.- A sustainable remittance delivery system in 6 months.

5.- 1 workshop or conference about sending and receiving remittances with Dash in each of the cities involved.

6.- Images on social media for each merchant and conference held.

7.- Segmented advertising campaign paid in Instagram in Venezuela, promoting remittances through our platform. Instagram is preferred as it is the most used social media by Venezuelans.

This pilot test has a duration of three months in the cities of Medellín and Cúcuta, given the effectiveness, we will be incorporating other cities in Latin America.

Dash Impulse we are another level!!!

Help me understand

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but can someone educate me a little on how to pay with bitcoin? Now before you send me any links, I have looked at the "get started" guide or whatever but I didn't quite get it. I want to transfer some money to bitcoin and then use that currency for anonymous payments, but most bitcoin wallets I have looked at are not even anonymous. I'm not interested in investing or anything like that, I just want to make some payments without giving my personal information away. Stupid question probably, but how do I do this?

IRS Clarifies Its Confusing ‘Airdrop’ Cryptocurrency Tax PolicyAmerica’s top tax authority, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), has somewhat provided clarification about its recent cryptocurrency tax guidelines. However, their final decision regarding taxing promotional airdrops is yet to be made.Critics pointed out a range of potential problems with the latest guidelines, issued in October. Perhaps most glaring among these issues was a section about “airdrops” — which, in the world of cryptocurrencies, is usually used to refer to promotional giveaways or customer rewards.Per Bloomberg Tax, Christopher Wrobel, an attorney in the IRS Office of the Associate Chief Counsel (Income Tax and Accounting) confirmed that while hard fork-generated revenues are taxable under the latest rulings, the revenue ruling doesn’t apply to promotional airdrop giveaways. But Wrobel did state that the IRS “hasn’t yet decided” whether such promotional airdrops should be treated as taxable.

AFME Calls For Supervisory Convergence On The Regulation Of Crypto-AssetsThe Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME) has published a new paper outlining five recommendations for delivering “supervisory convergence on the regulation of crypto-assets” across the region. In other words, the voice of Europe’s wholesale financial markets is saying it wants to encourage collaboration between regulators and those in Europe willing to tap into the cryptocurrency world by drawing up pointers which “work towards a common approach to the regulation and development of crypto-assets in financial services.”

Yesterday, we saw a couple of bearish patterns for bitcoin below the $8,880 resistance against the US Dollar. BTC remained in a bearish zone below the $8,800 level and the 100 hourly simple moving average.

The last rejection was near the $8,780 level and the 100 hourly SMA. A high was formed near $8,784 before the price declined below $8,700. Moreover, the price traded below $8,680 and it is currently testing the $8,640 support area.

If there is an upside correction, the $8,710 level is an immediate resistance. Besides, the 50% Fib retracement level of the recent decline from the $8,784 high to $8,636 low is also near the $8,710 level.

Banks are horrible, bitcoins uncertain - why is the financial world so slow?

All I needed or wanted to do was purchase space heaters for my mother, the gas is out and it's winter, and I'm overseas. Just $200 odd dollaras.

I explored and researched all the sites and possible trade options, coins for gift cards, etc etc. Tried sending WU 4 days. Bank to bank 2 days or more plus fees. No credit card available.

What a disappointing experience, ultimately sent moneygram, using bank, cash pick up for her - instant. Sad that banks and the financial institutions industry is so grossly delayed in event of urgency and a desire for flexibility and transparency in getting money to family.

The Bitcoin to online department store process is too risky. What if the cards are reused? They require the BTC after uploading the image of the "brand new" card, yeah no thanks. I was had by a stolen LBC account before. The money transfer, crypto, and international financial sector are emotionally taxing and I find the processes to be discouraging.
