"Bold and drastic action" is a bad idea

In the Maker Risk and Governance call today, Barron Gati illustrated various possible scenarios for approaching changes in the stability.

Low and slow

Change the stability fee slowly, over a long period of time, in order to signal to the market "peace", "tranquility", and "security". Don't freak out the market, and just slowly raise the SF until DAI slowly returns to $1

Hard and fast

Signal that the SF will be raised by a large amount every week until the DAI peg returns to $1. Signal to the market that the cost of capital for CDP holders is about to get really expensive, and shock them into repaying their CDP and reducing DAI supply.

Like all things in life, the correct answer is somewhere between these two extremes.

However, I believe the correct answer lies closer to the "Low and Slow" method, than the "Hard and Fast".

The core premise of this post:

the "Hard and Fast" approach is playing with fire.

"Hard and Fast" is how you shake up the market into behaviors you cannot account for. "Hard and Fast" is how you find out how far the long-tail of risk goes. "Hard and Fast" is how you trigger a black swan event.

In the governance call, the argument was brought up that "Market Makers havent been able to sell DAI @ $1 for many months now, and they would mitigate the risk associated with a hard and fast approach.

I think theres a case where they could actually exasperate it. If DAI starts zooming up to $1, maybe it zooms up to $1.02. Maybe large DAI holders think it might get greedy, euphoric, and might want to see how far DAI goes before selling. Maybe, it triggers a deflationary spiral, where no one wants to sell DAI because its $1.10 and rising.

"Hard and Fast" is also known as "Provide the market with little time to digest a lot of information".

When it comes to preserving DAI as a stable asset, going "hard and fast" is not the right approach. "hard and fast" is instability. It's fear and anxiety.

Central Banks do not operate this way. They operate with general caution.

I frequently compare MakerDAO to Bitcoin, and Bitcoin does not operate this way. It treats all potential risk extremely warily.

I lean towards "Low and Slow". If we don't get DAI back to $1 at a fast timeline, who cares? We got it there in the end, and we didn't break anything on the way there? Whats an extra month or three, when MakerDAO is being designed for centuries or more. Lets not play with fire when we dont need to.

Cheers.

New Bitfury Joint Project to Manage Medical Data Permissions With Blockchain Tech

The Bitfury Group and blockchain-powered medical data marketplace Longenesis have jointly launched production of a blockchain-based consent management system for the healthcare industry. The development was announced in a press release shared with Cointelegraph on April 4.

Per the release, the new product addresses issues with the management of user consent for ongoing and upcoming research endeavors, compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), as well as streamlining data collection for medical research.

Once collected, all data and updates to user consent are reportedly recorded on the ExonumTM blockchain with timestamping for future auditing. The solution can purportedly be used both as a full data-management system and as an add-on to existing digital systems for storing user consent. Alex Zhavoronkov, CEO of Insilico Medicine, Inc., said:

“While the regulations vary from country to country, the research organizations should strive to deploy content management systems that protect the data owners far better than any regulation. At the same time, the consent procedure should be pain-free, rapid, cost-effective and universal to ensure that the patients are fully-protected and educated.”

In February, Bitfury partnered with radiology blockchain marketplace Medical Diagnostic Web (MDW) to create a blockchain-based medical imaging ecosystem. Within the collaboration, Bitfury, MDW and Longenesis aim to develop a platform for maintaining, sharing and securing medical imaging and diagnostics information such as X-rays and CT scans.

Blockchain technology has been actively deployed by organizations around the world aiming to transform electronic health information. In March, South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT and the Seoul Medical Center jointly developed the “Smart Hospital” project geared to improve data accuracy and reduce processing timing for the aforementioned hospital.

Academics from the University of California, San Francisco, also proposed a method of sharing medical data using a blockchain-based system. The system aims to improve the traceability and immutability of collected clinical data, and make it more trustworthy. In addition, the system aims to advance methods for reporting adverse events during research and improve medical record management.

Email to our website spoofing the from field and saying they caught our company touching itself. Get real, please!!!

/* Thank God for spam folders, right? However, I do wonder what % of targets fall for this (I guess it depends on whether you have been naughty in front of your PC! */

Do I have your attention?
You are really screwed now and you better read this... !

Your device was recently infected with a software I developed,
and now you have a problem you need to solve,
because it has gone too far..

You probably noticed your device is acting strangely lately.
That's because you downloaded a nasty software I created
while you were browsing the Ƿornographic website...

The software automatically:
1) Started your Ƈamera and begun recoding you,
uploading the footage to my server...
2) Recording your device screen
3) Copied all your contact lists from mail program, facebook
and your device chain
4) Started logging what you write

The problem is that it has cought you while you have been
ʍasturbating.. and I didn't plan to see that.. but I did.

I now have the Opensource.mp4 file with you
ʍasturbating to this hardcore stuff... ugly!! :(( 🤮

Let me get straight to the point.

If you do not do what I ask you now, I will upload this
ugly video file with you ... and the stuff you were watching
to several video upload sites and I will send the links
to all your friends, family members and associates.

I am sure they will not like what they will see and I am
also sure you don't want me to do that, right ?

So do you want me to uninstall the nasty software from
your device and stop recording you?
Do you want me to forget about this whole issue??

I think 2,000 USD is a fair price for my silence. I know you
can handle to send me this money - and it is enough for
me to get lost. So how do you send the cash?? Bitcoin.

I checked right now and 1 Bitcoin is worth 4,960 bucks.
So...

Send exactly 0.405961 BTC to my Bitcoin wallet.

This is my Bitcoin wallet address:
3PYsRzS9acMxKKkDkuQuMHMTSjVmeSHwZj

If you do not know how to send cash using bitcoin,
type 'how to buy bitcoin' in google. There's plenty
of guides.

Ok.. so what if you decide not to pay ?
Well if you want to test my patience - go on.
I will destroy your social life, you can count on that.

You think that visiting Police is a good idea ? Nope.
I don't live in your country and I know how to stay
Anonymous. I will send the compromising video to
everyone you know!

Just send me the 2,000 USD and we forget about
the whole thing. I have family to feed too.

***********************************************
Send 2,000 USD worth of bitcoin to this address:

0.405961 BTC
to this address:

3PYsRzS9acMxKKkDkuQuMHMTSjVmeSHwZj

(copy and paste it - it's cAsE sensitive)
***********************************************

After you send the money to my wallet (exact
amount!) - I will see it and I will remove the video
and deactivate the rec software.

I give you 5 days only to send the transfer..

The time starts ticking after you open this letter
(I included a pixel in this message and I will
know when you read it).

Don't try to contact me - I am using an untracable
email to deliver this message to you.

I am waiting for your cash.
And don't forget the shame if you ignore me.

I'm currently planning on generating 50 Bitcoin Wallets and then sending $5 worth of BTC to each of them, and then giving those wallets out to my community members. However, that means 50 different transaction fees!

Couldn't I batch all of that into a single transaction and save myself about $60?

Tax losses related to QuadrigaCX insolvency

Hello. you've probably heard about the QuadrigaCX cryptocurrency exchange becoming insolvent and the 115,000 affected users that lost 250 millions $ worth of cryptos and $.

As someone else already pointed out on reddit, Quadriga is not officially insolvent yet so we cannot claim losses from insolvency at this point.

But in the event of the insolvency being accepted by the judge and sufficient proof of our claims (official documentation), I would like to know if whether or not we could claim capital losses to offset crypto capital gains from previous years.

For example, If my claim is 5,000 $ worth of bitcoins and 5,000 $CAD on the exchange (assuming that I don't retrieve anything after the proceedings), would I be able to claim 10,000$ of capital losses? (I'm claiming my trading gains and losses as capital gains/losses not business income)

Someone on reddit (source 1) mentioned that we could trigger the capital losses by filing an election under subsection 50(1) but when I talk to another accountant, he told me that it won't work unless we claim the losses as business income. (and even here there is "50% chances that it won't work")

When I read the CRA official documentation (source 2), it reads "The debt will be a capital loss in the following situations: You acquired it to earn income from a business or property". My debt was not to earn income from a business (it is personal gains) but could it be classified as property?

Source 1 : https://np.reddit.com/r/BitcoinCA/comments/an4kui/quadrigacx_and_losses_for_tax/

Thank you in advance for any clarifications you could provide. I'm quite certain that 115,000 affected users might be interested to hear about your expertise.

Lastly I would be truly grateful if you know any insolvency tax experts that you could direct me to to answer these questions.

Best,

Register marriage on the bitcoin blockchain

As I am getting married next weekend, I would like to record this event for eternity. The only sensible place seems to be some immutable record like Bitcoin's blockchain.

Now I have a public address that I published https://raquelandmartin.000webhostapp.com

My current plan is to just use OP_Return to embed our names and the place, which should be sufficient as the block height is as good a time stamp as it gets.

Now there are a few problems. First, there is no easy service to do this any more, cryptograffiti isn't working anymore and I have not found a convenient alternative.

This leads me also to believe that it may be not a good idea in the first place. In fact, the Bitcoin Wiki even suggests that it maybe "irresponsible" to use OP_Return for this purpose (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/OP_RETURN).

If Bitcoin is not the right place to record such vital information such as birth, marriage and death, what would be a good alternative, Ethereum?
