What is Bytom? | The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide

https://i.redd.it/nue9kmx7vba21.png

Bytom (BTM) is an open-source blockchain protocol for tokenizing digital and real world assets such as currencies, securities, dividends and bonds. Any information can be registered and digitized on the Bytom chain. Once digitized, the information can then be exchanged, gambled, or engaged with in a more complicated, smart contract-based manner.

The announcement for Bytom was made on the same day their public ICO began, June 20, 2017. In one month they were able to raise 8,400 BTC, worth approximately $22,554,000 at the time. 630M BTM coins were distributed over the course of the ICO, with another 777M BTM sold privately for an undisclosed amount.

Bytom’s max supply is 2.1B BTM, 77% of which has already been distributed in the form of ERC20 tokens on Ethereum’s network. On April 24, 2018 the Bytom wallet and mainnet launched, making it possible for holders of the ERC20 placeholder to swap them for real BTM on the main network.

What is Bytom?

Team Members

Bytom was founded by Duan Xinxing and Chang Jia. Duan is the former Vice President of the OKCoin exchange, and has lead other successful blockchain projects. Chang is a renowned science-fiction writer and one of the co-founders (along with Jihan Wu of Bitmain) of 8btc, China’s top source for cryptocurrency news and discussion.

Duan Xinxing; Source: Bytom.io

Working with Chang and Duan is a young, professional team. Most of the senior talent was brought over from 8btc, and there are about 30 individuals with varying skill sets working under them.

Goals

Bytom’s goal is to act as the bridge between the physical and digital business worlds by creating an open platform for registering real-world assets. The team’s hope is that they can standardize the creation and definition process for digitizing assets in a user-friendly way.

In an interview, founder Duan Xinxing had this to say about Bytom’s aims:

“More and more digital assets will emerge in the future. Bytom bridges physical word and byte world for multiple digital assets, promoting the registration, circulation and exchange of various digital assets.”

Bytom strives to become a trusted network to those using their platform by providing three major services. First, the team itself will conduct paid due diligence investigations on all assets and projects that are to be listed on Bytom. Second, the team will provide both free and paid services to aid the flow and exchange of assets. Lastly, upper layer applications will be continually developed with the benefit of the entire ecosystem in mind. Speaking of layers. . .

How Bytom Works

Technical Info

There are three layers to Bytom’s architecture: the Application Layer, the Contract Layer and the Shared Ledger Layer. In an effort to streamline the process of digitizing assets, the team has segregated the Application Layer and tried to keep the tools simple.

The Application Layer is where end users will interact with the network. Using tools such as wallets, users can trigger actions on or make forecasts from the Contract Layer. The Contract Layer has two types of contracts: Genesis Contracts and General Contracts.

Genesis Contracts create and validate the actions of smart contracts on the network. They are responsible for enforcing the standardized protocol rules. General Contracts, on the other hand perform a couple different functions. The first is to provide the framework for transferring assets between users, and the second is to deploy new assets by first getting approval from the Genesis Contract.

The Shared Ledger layer is the blockchain that we’re all used to. This is the historical log of all transaction data that has occurred on the Bytom Blockchain. This is the layer which keeps track of all balances and is secured with mining.

Governance Structure

The management structure for Bytom, as outlined in their Economic White Paper, is designed to be similar to corporate governance. The team has decided on a three tier system which includes the Bytom Coin-holder Assembly, the Autonomous Committee, and the Executive Committee.

These groups form a hierarchy with the Bytom Coin-holders Assembly at the top. The Coin-holders Assembly has the most authority in the system and is comprised of all the holders of BTM tokens. Every token holder has the right to vote on the actions of the Assembly.

The Autonomous Committee is tasked with electing members to the Executive Committee and overseeing their work. The Autonomous Committee answers directly to the Coin-holders Assembly.

The Executive Committee are the ones responsible for the day to day matters of the Bytom blockchain. Their tasks include creating and maintaining a number of management centers that handle things such as technology development, risk management and integrating services.

Furthermore, the team plans to establish a Bytom Foundation which will operate outside of China. Their duty will be to serve as the governing body to the Bytom Blockchain. They will provide services to shareholders, standardize procedures, protect the rights of coin holders, and market the brand.

Transactions

The BTM token is designed to have three uses: to pay transaction fees for asset trading, dividends of income assets, and deposits for asset issuance. There are currently three types of assets on the Bytom Blockchain: income assets, equity assets, and securitized assets.

Each of these asset classes are defined in Bytom’s white paper. Using BTM tokens, users can trade or sell ownership and redeem value from these real world assets on Bytom’s blockchain. In order to accomplish this technically, the developers had to modify Bitcoins transaction model (UTXO) to create their own (BUTXO) which has support for these physical properties.

Future Plans

The next focus will be to stay one step ahead of scaling problems. The Bytom team wants to have solutions in place before the demand for expansive use. Since they have implemented a version of SegWit, Bytom’s developers will be able to use a modified version of the Lightning Network which supports multiple assets. This will allow for small, repetitive transactions to happen in milliseconds for almost no cost on a second layer.

Once the Lightning Network is operating on Bytom, the team intends to add cross-chain atomic swaps. This is a wonderful feature that allows for users of different cryptocurrencies to swap with each other in a P2P, trustless and decentralized way.

Beyond that, Bytom plans to expand their ecosystem in general by investing money and marketing. Then, once they find some actual users, they’ll need to bootstrap the entire process of digitizing assets. This will no doubt be a significant amount of work since one of their goals is to do due diligence investigations of each asset on their chain.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Founders with deep roots in the Chinese cryptocurrency space.
  • Partnered with some extremely influential companies.
  • Raised a lot of money through public and private pre-sales, should be self sufficient for a while.

Cons

  • More than 3/4 of coins sold through public and private ICO, leaving little for mining incentive.
  • Some of the project’s direction seems to be heavily influenced by their business partners.
  • The fact that they could not get their mining algorithm right is worrisome.
  • Smart contracts and digital assets are already being done on other chains which are more established, especially in China.
  • The team has put a lot of continuing responsibility on themselves beyond just code development and security.

How to Buy

Buying Bytom at the moment is not so easy unless you are in China. However, there are some exchanges which cater to customers in other regions. Taking a look at the list of exchanges, there are a few that customers from almost any country can use including Bibox, Cryptopia and HitBTC.

You may need to verify your identity with a passport in some cases, depending on your daily withdraw needs. Always be sure to check the terms before depositing funds on a new exchange.

See Bytom’s Current Price Here.

How to Store

1.How you hold your BTM tokens depends on whether you have the ERC20 tokens, or the real BTM tokens. Anyone that bought in the ICO received ERC20 placeholders, which can be stored in any wallet that supports ETH, MyEtherWallet for one.

Since the mainnet has launched, the ERC20 tokens can now be traded for the true BTM token. There is no deadline in place to do the swap though, and because of this, exchanges and users have been slow to follow through with it. Interestingly, this is causing another issue because almost every exchange only accepts the ERC20 tokens, yet the miners are earning the real BTM tokens. This has leftminers with only one exchange to sell on, which does not allow customers from the US.

Once most ERC20 tokens have been swapped, the exchanges will start using the main chain. At that point, you can use the wallet from the Bytom team.

The official wallet is simple and well designed. Some of the available features are an HD seed for easy backup, ability to create multiple accounts and addresses, and interacting with digitized assets and contracts.

  1. Google plug-in wallet from the community. Now it's listed on Google shop.

Conclusion

With over $20M in funding, more than 30 members on their prestigious team, and the backing of some of the most powerful players in all of cryptocurrency, Bytom seems to have secured a bright future for themselves. All of these facts combined with a structured business and governance model, which was designed by individuals with experience and success in this industry, gives one confidence that their goals will be attained.

If they are to be successful in digitizing physical assets they may need to directly compete with the likes of Ethereum and NEO, which is a daunting task to say the least. Nonetheless, it may turn out that there’s a special niche for strong KYC/AML situations that Bytom’s due diligence promises, that can give them an edge over the competition.

Whatever happens, it’s pretty obvious that Bytom’s time is just beginning. We’ll just have to wait and see how the blockchaining of physical assets plays out and which team’s method has the most success going forward.

5 Things Bitcoin, Blockchain And Cryptocurrency Industry Should Discard In 2019 - Bitcoin Exchange Guide

https://bitcoinexchangeguide.com/5-things-bitcoin-blockchain-and-cryptocurrency-industry-should-discard-in-2019/

How does the perpetual XBTUSD contract works? An intuitive guide

This is a basic explanation of how the XBTUSD perpetual contract works; it's meant to illustrate the intuition behind it and some of the details you might have to ask. It's not exhaustive, it only useful intuitions.

Bitmex accepts Bitcoin only, and settle contracts in BTC, so you only own, gain or loses Bitcoin, but you trade or gamble in other cryptocurrencies.

The XTBUSD Perpetual contract

You have an amount of BTC. You want this amount to grow in the same way as the price of BTC-USD (when you buy the contract) or in the opposite direction (when you sell the contract).

Each contract is worth 1USD, so When you buy 1 contract @3610.0 it means you have to pay 1 USD worth of bitcoin at the price you specified. When you sell the contract instead you receive 1USD woth of BTC at the price you sold at. The same is true if you sell before buying.

Note that you are buying contracts and not USD or BTC; so how does it guarantee that the price of the contract will follow the price of BTC-USD? With the Funding Rate

Funding Rate

https://www.bitmex.com/app/perpetualContractsGuide#Funding The price of the contract might differ from the price of BTC-USD. The price of BTC-USD is distilled into an index (.BXBT)[https://www.bitmex.com/app/index/.BXBT] which is the average of BTC-USD from other exchanegs. This is the 'price of BTC' and is usually slightly different from the 'price of the contract'. When the price of the contract is less than price of BTC, users with a long position get paid the funding rate so you have an incentive to buy the contracts, this push up the price of the contract thus realigning the price of the contract with the price of BTC-USD. At the same time users with short position will pay the same amunt of funding rate, so they have an incentive to reduce their position (by buying contracts), and this also tend to push up the price of the contract to match the price of BTC.

When the price of the contract is more than the price of BTC, the opposite happens: users with long position pays users with short position, this gives an incentive to sell the contract, pushind down its price to be closer to the price of BTC.

The amount of funding rate you receive or pay is proportional to the difference between the price of the contract and the price of BTC. The funding rate is given every 8 hours, and it's computed as an average over the last 8 hours (TWAP) of the difference between price of XBTUSD and .BXBT. The actual computation is more complex and out of the scope of this article, until someone find an intuitive way to describe it. You'll find examples here.

When if the funding rate charged?

The funding rate is charged at 4:00UTC, 12:00UTC and 20:00UTC every day. The funding rate is also published with an 8-hour grace period before it is charged https://blog.bitmex.com/xbtusd-funding-mean-reversion-strategy/. What does it means?

Let's take an example from 13/01/2019 at about 16:40UTC, the detail page https://www.bitmex.com/app/contract/XBTUSD says:

name value
Funding Rate -0.0230%
Next Funding Jan 13, 2019, 8:00:00 PM
Predicted Rate 0.0003%

At Jan 13, 2019, 20:00:00, the funding rate will be -0.0230%, meaning shorts will pay long 0.023% of their open position. This happens only among those users which have an open position at Jan 13, 2019, 20:00:00 . This funding rate has been computed as an average over time of the difference between the price of the XBTUSD contract and .BXBT, during the period (Jan 13, 2019, 12:00:00 - Jan 13, 2019, 16:00:00). (All times are UTC) Also the Predicted Rate is 0.0003%, which is computed during the period (Jan 13, 2019, 12:00:00 - Jan 13, 2019, 20:00:00) and will be paid at Jan 14, 2019, 04:00:00. This is 'predicted' because the period of computation has not finished yet, so this rate might still change.

The current price of the contract and .BXBT will not affect the next funding rate you get, but the one after that.

Note also that the funding rate is not per day, but per 8 hours period. To know which % you pay per day you have to sum 3 consecutive funding rates.

This means you can think of strategies to speculate on the funding rate and not on the price of BTC-USD itself; for example looking at (https://midascapital.eu/2018/08/03/the-xbtusd-perpetual-swap-contract/)[https://midascapital.eu/2018/08/03/the-xbtusd-perpetual-swap-contract/].

API Trades Explanation

How does an API trade messages look like? When a trade happens on the exchange you will receive a JSON message like this throught the websocket or REST API:

'{"timestamp":"2018-12-14T17:04:27.127Z","symbol":"XBTUSD","side":"Sell","size":5,"price":3170.5,"tickDirection":"MinusTick","trdMatchID":"15cdac8e-ccdc-5d4b-1300-a0899574239d","grossValue":157705,"homeNotional":0.00157705,"foreignNotional":5}'

Let's break it down:

{ "timestamp":"2018-12-14T17:04:27.127Z", // When the trade happened according to bitmex server timestamp "symbol":"XBTUSD", // which contract is this "side":"Sell", // The taker side; 'Sell' means someone sent and order to buy and didn't get mathced immediately; at this timestamp someone decided to match the offer and sell to them. "size":5, // How many contracts; just for convenience you can think of these as USD "price":3170.5, // pride of the contract "tickDirection":"MinusTick", // This trade happened at a price lower than the previous one "trdMatchID":"15cdac8e-ccdc-5d4b-1300-a0899574239d", // ID of this trade. It should always be unique. "grossValue":157705, // How many sathoshi were exchanged == 5/3170.5*100000000 "homeNotional":0.00157705, // How many BTC was this trade worth "foreignNotional":5 // How many USD was this trade worth }

If any of these field seems irrelevant or trivial, please note that they are much less trivial for the ETHUSD contract.

I will happily add or change details if they helps simplifying the explanation.

EDIT: see also the intuitivo guide to ETHUSD.

ProgPoW testnet mining pool not working

I attempted to try out the ProgPoW testnet mining pool (looks like there's only one) today, but I'm getting a connection error:

I'm using progminer v1.1.0 for AMD cards and Windows 10. My rig GPUs are: RX 580 8GB, RX 580 8GB, RX 470 4GB. I also tried v0.16 for AMD on Linux, but the same problem happens.

Looks like it has nothing to do with the mining and the thread/driver isn't crashing. It appears like the pool is rejecting my connections. My wallet address above is a brand new one created with wallet.progtest.net.

Does anybody know if the pool has been closed down or the test was only for 1-2 days? Is the test over? I currently see 4 miners with a total of 29 Mh/s. I can't find any guide or explanation. Is there also a way to solo mine on the Gangnam testnet, if the pool is currently broken?

How does the perpetual ETHUSD contract works? An intuitive guide

Read my guide to XBTUSD contract first, as this only add complexity.

This is a common language explanation of how the ETHUSD perpetual contract works; it's meant to illustrate the intuition behind it and some of the details you might have to ask. It's not exhaustive, it only useful intuitions.

Note that Bitmex accepts Bitcoin only, and settle contracts in BTC, so you only own, gain or loses Bitcoin, even if you speculate on the price of ETHUSD.

The ETHUSD Perpetual contract

You have an amount of BTC. You want this amount to grow in the same way as the price of ETH-USD (when you buy the contract) or in the opposite direction (when you sell the contract). Please note that even if the contract is settled in BTC, the price of BTC-USD does not influence the computation of PnL and funfing rate for this contract.

Size of the contract

Each contract is worth a variable amount of BTC. From the page https://www.bitmex.com/app/contract/ETHUSD = "Each contract is worth 0.001 mXBT per $1 price". Which means if the price of the ETHUSD contract is 115.95 than each contract is worth 115.95*0.000001 BTC = 0.00011595 BTC.

For example when you buy 20 contracts @115.95 it means you have to pay it with 20115.950.000001 BTC. If later you sell it at 130.0 you will received 201300.000001 BTC.

If you sell 20 contracts @115.95 you have to lock down 20115.950.000001 BTC; later if you buy at 110.0 you will have your fund unlocked and will get the difference of (115.95-110.0)*0.000001 BTC as realised PnL.

Note that you are not specifying anywhere the amount of equivalent ETH that you are trading.

Note also that you are buying contracts and not USD or ETH; so how does it guarantee that the price of the contract will follow the price of ETH-USD? With the Funding Rate.

Funding Rate

https://www.bitmex.com/app/perpetualContractsGuide#Funding

The funding rate work exactly as the funding rate for XBTUSD, see my previous guide for more explantion. The only difference is that the ETH reference price is madde from the .BETH index (instead of .BXBT)

API Explanation

How does API trade messages look like? When a trade happens on the exchange you will receive a JSON message like this throught the websocket or REST API:

'{"timestamp":"2019-01-13T19:11:04.721Z","symbol":"ETHUSD","side":"Sell","size":1100,"price":114,"tickDirection":"ZeroPlusTick","trdMatchID":"48aa6a2a-11ff-fa7c-148a-77fa4ee44ef1","grossValue":12540000,"homeNotional":3.8601909039865245,"foreignNotional":440.06176305446377}'

Let's break it down: remember that by definition each contract with these values is worth 114*0.000001 BTC = 0.000114 BTC

{ "timestamp": "2019-01-13T19:11:04.721Z", // when the trade happened, according to BITMEX server timestamp "symbol": "ETHUSD", // which contract is this "side": "Sell", // Side of the taker "size": 1100, // How many contracts were traded "price": 114, // price of each contract, same as USE for each ETH "tickDirection": "ZeroPlusTick", // this trade has a price equal or lower than the previous one "trdMatchID": "48aa6a2a-11ff-fa7c-148a-77fa4ee44ef1", // unique id of every trade "grossValue": 12540000, // how many satoshis were traded to pay for this contract "homeNotional": 3.8601909039865245, // How many equivalent ETH was this trade worth "foreignNotional": 440.06176305446377 // How many equivalent USD was this trade worth }

I will happily add or change details if they helps simplifying the explanation.

Day 12

January 12th 2019

Day 12

Life in general seems to be going better. I don't know exactly what is causing these changes. NoFap is definitely part of it, along with changes in diet and exercise and going to church. Socially Ive been just way more comfortable in places I am usually not. Also, women that Ive known for months have been more touchy and interactive/social with me. Again, Ive made a decent amount of changes to my life, so its difficult to pinpoint what is the cause. It could also partly be the mindset in my head that Im going to make changes and Im actually following through. It also could just be a lucky streak of events, so we'll see if it continues. However, these benefits definitely add a motivating factor for when Ill eventually be faced with a massive urge somewhere down the line

Coin Burn In Cryptocurrencies! Adding significant value to coin holders!!

What is Coin Burning?

Coin burning – as the name suggest – is a process of intentionally ‘burning’ or eliminating the coins by rendering it unusable. This is done by sending a portion of the coins to an ‘eater address’, which is often referred to as a ‘black hole’ since the private keys to that address are not obtainable by anyone. Therefore, any coins sent to an eater address are unrecoverable and cannot be used again, forever! These coins are effectively taken out of circulation and is publicly recorded and verifiable on the blockchain.

I particularly find coin burn a good thing and like holding some tokens/coins that implement some type of burn because it almost guarantees decent returns.

In order to understand this, we need to understand the basic economic laws of demand and supply.

Scarcity is a central economic concept that gives value to a particular asset and in this case, cryptocurrency. Unlike fiat currencies, cryptocurrencies are deflationary in nature. This means that the coin supply for most cryptocurrencies are fixed, with no additional coins created once it has reached its total supply count. The best example is Bitcoin, which has a fixed supply of only 21 million; if demand increases, prices would increase since there is a limited number of Bitcoin in circulation. Likewise, if the supply of Bitcoin further decreases – due to burning, lost private keys or forgotten Bitcoins – then prices would similarly increase since there is now a lesser amount of Bitcoins to satisfy people’s demands.

Coin burning reduces the total supply in circulation since the coin is intentionally destroyed. It is an effective method of increasing and stabilizing the valuation of coins and tokens. Economic principles dictate that reducing the quantity of something makes it much more valuable!!!

Coin burning is an effective tool to signal a firm commitment by a cryptocurrency project. The goal of any project is to add significant value to coin holders, who will probably be the core users and supporters of their service.

Summing it All Up

Coin burning is a relatively novel approach in a protocol or policy level for cryptocurrency projects to consider, with various implementations and features that can be adopted. The benefits of integrating a coin burning mechanism is wide-ranging, from being a more environmentally-friendly consensus mechanism to enhancing long-term value for coin holders. It could also be used to sidestep securities law that govern dividend-paying securities. More than that, coin burns represents a viable tool in preserving wealth for all participants in the network.

THE MATH : Coinmarketcap

RANK 114 $25.208.057 USD

Circ supply ----> 20.524.490 mill

After Coinburn

Approx Circ supply ----> 3.5 mill

Basically if demand stays the same or even increases, and we stay at around 100 - 110 levels on marketcap.

This would mean a price appreciation of around ~ 600%

And a price of around $7-8
