How traceable is bitcoin?

In order to buy bitcoin I signed up on coinbase, which required a picture of my govt ID. Suppose I were to transfer those BTC to bitpay and bought something illegal off the darkweb. Would the bitcoins then be traceable to me? Sry I’m still learning how exactly cryptocurrency works.

If it is traceable, is there a guide somewhere about paying for stuff with bitcoin in a manner that is not traceable?

Is my model overkill?

Hi everyone,

Newbie here. Right now, I just want to pay for a VPN service, but I imagine I will use BTC to pay for more things as I get more familiar with the currency.

For privacy, I am planning to buy BTC from a Bitcoin ATM in town. My problems begin with wallets. I understand that it is best to run your own full node for privacy, so I am going to run a full node bitcoin core installed on Tails OS to route it through TOR. But I have no experience with Debian, so if you happen to know a guide on doing this (besides the official one) would be most appreciated.

My question is, if I am only going to make a single payment for now, do I have to run my node all the time? Could I just unplug the USB the wallet is on and make it a """cold""" storage? Or would there be associated problems? Should I use a mixer after buying Bitcoin from an ATM? Is my plan stupid and there is a much easier way that offers a comparable privacy level?

Please let me know! My head is splitting from reading jargony articles, so I welcome any suggestions.

I’ve been doing some reading and checking out the data and it doesn’t look like the number of daily active addresses will be increasing. The adjusted daily transaction volume is plateauing. The lightning network appears to be a failure as evidenced by a number of its statistics. Bakkt will go live soon but that’s already priced in probably, and it may not even have a positive effect on bitcoin. There aren’t any hopeful candidates for a bitcoins etf. Legitimate bitcoin custodians already exist and that hasn’t had an noticeable positive impact on the price. It’s true that the price could shoot up with some strong momentum if there is a FOMO event again, but with the possibility for shorting with futures contracts even that is limited. And I don’t even know what could cause that kind of event now. Bitcoins price isn’t even exponential. It appears to follow a pattern of being log-linear for short periods before it adjusts and it’s long term upwards trend decreases, culminating in a plateau (now).

Where’s the reason to hope? I’m not trying to bash bitcoin because I want it to succeed and I want a reason to put more money into it.
