Tax Question (USA)
I have a question for a friend who got involved with crypto a few years ago but completely ignored my advice on keeping track and logging taxable events.
As it stands now, he holds only Bitcoin but a pretty nice stash (well into double digits). He is talking about retiring if the price does what many of us think it will, and I finally confronted him on taxes. As it turns out, he bought most of his Bitcoin on Coinbase and Gemini a few years ago, along with some Litecoin and Ether. He traded the Litecoin and Ether in 2018 for Bitcoin using ShapeShift or Changely or some other service like that. He didn't keep track of it and did not report the trades on his taxes. He says he didn't have to because the price of the LTC and ETH were lower when he traded them than what he bought them for.
So the problem is that now he has several Bitcoin in his Ledger wallet that he cannot associate with a buy on Coinbase. Most of his Bitcoin he can associate with lots for tax reporting, but there are a few left over due to the trades that he did. He is finally starting to plan his exit, and he is freaking out about taxes now that I finally got it through his thick head how this all works.
So what should he do to fix this? When he sells some BTC, can he just use a cost basis of $0 from the few BTC he has leftover and use an arbitrary date in 2018 close to when he sold the LTC/ETH and pay taxes on the full amount as a long-term gain? Can he just comment that it was from undocumented trades? Is this likely to trigger an audit? He wants to be honest now to "not jeopardize his Lambo" or end up in jail. Can he plead ignorance here and avoid penalties?
I helped him download all of his transactions from Coinbase and Gemini and put them in a spreadsheet. He hasn't sold any Bitcoin ever, which is awesome because he bought some when it was under $1,000! When I sum the column for the BTC buys, it is short a few BTC compared to what he has stored in his Ledger, and I just don't know what to tell him.
I suggested that he use the unaccounted for balance first when he finally starts selling to get that out of the way as soon as possible. That way when the price of BTC goes even higher, and he sells larger amounts, those higher values will be tracked better to actual buys on exchanges and hold up better in the event of an audit. But how should he report it? You are supposed to have dates for when it was acquired along with the cost basis, which he doesn't have.

Silver has among the highest prospects vs. the major metals to add to last year's gains, in our view. Unlike gold, demand for the white precious metal is about 50% industrial, which may place it in a unique position among favorable macroeconomic underpinnings and accelerating trends in electrification and decarbonization. The most efficient conductor of electricity is also a very deep market, with established futures and ETF trading, on the back of the physical market going back thousands of years. At almost 700,000 Bitcoins, GBTC is reaching record highs, while gold ETFs have dropped to about 107 million ounces from the October peak just above 111 million.

Why we won't get another 2018 crypto crash
While corrections will undoubtly occur, I don't think Crypto is going to experience another Crypto crash of magnitude that we witnessed in 2018 - followed by Crypto winter. Here are my arguments:
1) In 2017, Crypto marget cap surged mainly because of individual retail investors whereas nowadays there are more and more institutions using Bitcoin as a store of value. Institutional interest will only grow. Institutions aren't as likely to sell all their assets on a day to day basis.
2) Crypto is alive. When the market crashed, people feared that Crypto is just a failed project at this point, burst bubble. As we can see though, Crypto is back and stronger than before. This means that it's likely to come back again (and possibly stronger) in event of market crashing - which will encourage many investors to take the risk, hold and not sell. This will significantly dampen the magnitude of a crash.
3) January 10, 2021. After Bitcoin reached impressive ATH over 40K USD it dropped as low as 30K in the next 48 hours. That's 30 % drop. At that point, many investors (including me) panic sold their position in fear of 2018 repeating itself. A month later Bitcoin is almost back at the ATH level while many other Cryptos recorded impressive ATHs. Bitcoin managed to stay around the 30K mark (thank you Michael Saylor and Grayscale) while redistributing holdings from retail investors to institutions. This will further increase market stability.
That's why I'm optimistic about the future and don't expect another major crash. I don't even think Bitcoin is going back to 30K, ever - only in the event of some crazy worldwide crypto regulations.
Of course, cryptocurrency market is anything but predictable - but in the event of market crashing once more, investors can look back at past "ressurections" and rest assured that crypto is here to stay.

Bitcoin is a not a p2p cash it is a new world reserve currency. Let me tell you why..
So I've been thinking lately about bitcoin and money and where the world is going and all that stuff. And I went back in time to 2017ish where there was a lot of debate about performance of bitcoin as a p2p cash and how it was lacking in that department, the debates on what it is and several different camps of opinions all trying to grasp it the best way they could.
The more I see how things are evolving and one day I was thinking and it hit me - bitcoin was never meant to be a p2p cash and that was Satoshi's intention all along.
Bitcoin came to be at the time when the world was trying to recover from a financial crisis as a response to it. Yes it was quoted as "peer to peer electronic cash" in the WP, but the more I think about it, I'm starting to think that perhaps Satoshi's genius extends even further.
Just think about it - if somebody came up with an idea and called it "the new world reserve currency" it wouldn't catch interest of any normal person or a nerd. Perhaps some finance person but I doubt it, they would have laughed it off as they would lack the capacity and imagination to understand the value of this invention. AND if it was promoted as something "rare" and something to be "kept" bitcoin would have never spread as everyone would try to hoard is from the start which would have hindered it's adoption greatly and perhaps even prevented it from taking off the way it did and in time to perhaps come save us in the next crisis.
Perhaps even the high fees were/are a blessing in disguise, making people think twice before sending as to maybe help them hold onto whatever fragments they own as by that time its true value have begun to show.
And last but not least - the message imbedded in the Genesis Block says it all. It clearly points to the major fuck up that has happened and the subsequent events that have unfolded including further devaluation of the dollar.
It is said that the lifespan of a reserve currency extends to about 100 years, and that means that the grim reaper is getting ready to come for the dollar and take it to the other side... we are due for a replacement and the replacement is right here.
Satoshi must have been wise beyond any living soul to even disappear without a trace in time. Imagine being THE person to dethrone THE dollar with your invention, the god and the devil in one person, perhaps he whoever he is was would already been jailed or murdered. Imagine the predicament when bitcoin takes its place as a reserve currency as well as having the keys to the original wallet... I am certain there will be statues of Satoshi all over the world, one day worshiped like a god with religion in the true sense of the word.
The true flippening is on the horizon.....and I guess in retrospect, it was inevitable.
