Bitcoin price PLUNGE: Expert explains why cryptocurrency PLUMMETED to new low this year

bitseven.com - BITCOIN price plunged to its lowest value in more than a year this week and cryptocurrency expert Wayne Trench has said a "fairly unique market event" called forking is to blame.

Wayne Trench, CEO of OSL Brokerage, said the sudden drop in the price of bitcoin relates to the so-called “hard fork” of bitcoin cash, whereby the digital asset will effectively divide in two to form a new cryptocurrency. The cryptocurrency expert explained the recent drop in price and said: “If you actually turn the clock back 12 months, bitcoin is actually at almost the same level it was at this time last year.
“It’s really hovered around the $6,200 to $6,500 range and has seen fairly strong support at $6,200. Over the last 36 hours or so, a fairly unique market event with one of the bitcoin cash, or bitcoin cash blockchain, forking.

“Any fork event creates disruption in the marketplace. That’s really been the driver for the price action over the last 24 to 36 hours.”

Mr Trench explained “forking” in the cryptocurrency and said: “This has happened before. The original bitcoin protocol which was established around ten years or so ago was forked a little while ago and a new blockchain, bitcoin cash, was created. At that point in time we saw similar dislocations in the market.

“Investors were keen to try and profit from that trade event and we are seeing something similar play out now.”

Although the price of bitcoin has fallen in recent days, overall BTC’s price has increased dramatically since its creation a decade ago.

Bitcoin economist Saifedean Ammous told Express.co.uk the reason for the rise in BTC’s price was because its supply growth rate is so small.

Dr Ammous argued bitcoin's low supply growth would soon make it the "hardest money on earth" as existing fiat currencies become less desirable.

He said: “That is why in ten years it has appreciated by about 700million percent.”

Since early September, bitcoin had traded in a narrow range between $6,000 (£4,695) and $7,000 (£5,477), following months of steady losses that had seen it fall from a high close to $20,000 (£15,650) in late 2017.

Bitcoin price sat at $5,560.91 at 13:23 (GMT) on Friday, according to CoinDesk.
The cryptocurrency saw its highest value before Christmas when it reached the monumental price of just under $20,000.

Despite the plunge, some experts have anticipated a price surge over the final weeks of 2018, calling the reduced volatility the “calm before the storm”.

Danny Scott, co-founder of crypto exchange CoinCorner, told Express.co.uk bitcoin’s price could reach $15,000 (£11,732) by December.

He said: “If you look at historic trends, November and December typically have been our busier months.

“We are also seeing huge amounts of investment coming through from high net worth individuals and companies buying Bitcoin in high volumes.”

Cryzen Platform is open for backtesting

We are proud to announce the launch of our highly anticipated algorithmic trading platform! Cryzen is revolutionizing the way cryptocurrency traders are making trades, equipping them with an array of cutting-edge tools. The world is moving towards an era of greater automation and it would be inequitable to deprive the cryptocurrency markets of such capabilities.

https://i.redd.it/2q0s6z250ry11.png

Trade all of your favorite coins by connecting to your preferred exchange via native API's. Users of the Cryzen platform are not limited to a specific number of coins they could trade. By connecting with the exchange of your preference via API, you can run an algorithm trading Ethereum and one trading Bitcoin simultaneously. For anybody with a diverse portfolio, this is an extremely powerful tool, essentially giving them the power to duplicate themselves. Do you think you could make more profit if you could afford to watch the charts 24 hours a day in order to capitalize on all possible opportunities? Don't think too hard; the answer is a lot simpler than you think.

Competitive Edge
While you may have heard of other trading bots, Cryzen has been built to outperform the competition. Compared to other platforms, we are candidly

Smarter:

Cryzen uses Machine Learning to gather wider market data such as market-wide sentiment via Social media, Reddit, and other mediums. Cryptocurrency event data (new exchange listings, network upgrades, and more) will also be utilized, exponentially optimizing the trading experience and outcomes.

Former quants and machine learning engineers will appreciate the development environment and data pipeline, which accelerates the time to live trading by handling all of the tedious tasks associated with building a test environment and accessing fragmented data. Create your algorithm from scratch in our code studio, backtest and deploy.
The code studio provides an online/browser-based ide for algorithm development in Python and supports syntax highlighting, autocomplete, code collapse, auto indent, and more. Furthermore, the code studio features a mini dashboard which will display trading logs and render/visualize backtesting results with respect to price and action data (i.e. it will render an overlay of what a user's script did on top of the price charts of the cryptocurrencies involved).

Faster:

With the amount of volatility present in the young cryptocurrency markets, time is of the essence. We make this a priority by delivering 5-second data feeds versus 1-minute data frequency found on other platforms.

Simpler:

We understand that not everybody is well versed in Python, and it would be unreasonable to believe that everybody interested in using our platform will be. For that reason, we are building a user-friendly U.I with built-in strategies. Users simply edit the parameters to their preference and backtest them against prehistoric data to ensure the efficiency of their algorithm before they deploy them.

Don't allow the revolution to occur in front of your very eyes without taking proper action. Head over to https://www.Cryzen.com and become a part of the inevitable future.

To One Bank, This Is The Flashing Red Warning That A Crash Is Dead Ahead

For much of 2018, the prevailing market theme was the one Morgan Stanley dubbed "rolling bear markets" when any time a given asset was hit, whether emerging markets, Italian bonds, or tech stocks, money would simply rotate from one place to another. However, at the end of September, when rates spiked amid concerns the Fed was prepared to push rates beyond neutral, things changed overnight.

Fast forward to now when what appeared to be somewhat orderly sequential blow ups have mutated into wholesale market panics in which everything starts to go wrong at once, or as Bloomberg describes it "everywhere you look, something’s blowing up."

In commodities, it’s the record plunge in oil. In equities, it’s six weeks of turbulence in the S&P 500. Debt markets have been rattled by the turmoil engulfing General Electric and PG&E. Bitcoin just plunged 13 percent. And Goldman Sachs, the storied investment bank, is having the worst week since 2016.

As Bloomberg correctly notes, by themselves these sudden asset air pockets would be enough to incite panic, "but have them erupt all around and even the most grizzled Wall Street types can start to sound paranoid. Does GE have something to do with Goldman? How does Bitcoin sway the stock market? Wildfires have nothing to do with crude’s convulsions, but both are bad news for banks."

“The risk of contagion is understood. What’s not understood is where and how connected things are,” Stewart Capital Advisors' Malcolm Polley said by phone. "Just about anything can create panic, create contagion, and it doesn’t have to be something that makes sense."

That bad things should congregate isn’t surprising to Donald Selkin, chief market strategist at Newbridge Securities, who sees it as a consequence of having it so good for so long. He’s waking up every night to check the futures.

“People are saying, ‘Get me out across the board,”’ Selkin said. “Everyone is anxious. I am anxious. You buy a good company and hope for the best and pray it doesn’t get destroyed. Look at Apple down $40. Look at some of the most well-known companies being decimated. I own Apple. I own Exxon. Of course I feel a lot of pressure.”

The biggest headache is plaguing investors is identifying the channels of contagion that are dragging seemingly disparate assets lower, and which for years remained dormant in the face of adverse stimuli. Some examples:

Bitcoin is viewed as an isolated ecosystem but it does have a bearing on chipmakers, a particularly speculative corner of the market that is watched to gauge investors’ risk appetite. The digital currency’s peak in December came two months before the S&P 500’s worst rout in two years.

The connection between GE and banks? After the debt downgrade made it harder for the manufacturer to borrow through commercial paper, it has turned to credit lines provided by banks to fund businesses. According to its quarterly filings, the industrial conglomerate has drawn on $41 billion in credit lines from more than 30 lenders.

Not everyone agrees, and the die-hard bulls are still hoping that there is no correlation between the now shrinking consolidated global central bank balance sheet, and these increasingly more frequent events. "We have seen a number of idiosyncratic stories going on such as GE, GS, PG&E which are not necessarily a signal of a market correction,” said NN Investment Partners money manager Dorian Garay. “U.S. credit and macro fundamentals are solid as reiterated by recent macro indicators and earnings.”

Perhaps Garay, like all the other millennials in the market who have never lived through a real bear, forgot that the market - when stripped of its central bank training wheels - is a discounting mechanism, and it's not about current earnings but the future cash flow streams. Although in a world dominated by central banks, one can see why people would forget this modest distinction.

Some have had no choice but to remember, however.

“We’re still focused not only on valuations but on the quality of balance sheets going forward,” said Joe Smith, deputy CIO at Omaha, Nebraska-based CLS Investments. Low rates have enabled borrowing to fund share repurchases and higher dividends, he added. “Some of those factors could likely translate as things that create more angst or anxiety for investors going forward as people start to think about whether those companies in effect overspent too much with their credit cards.”

He has a point: in fact, despite spending a record $800 billion on buybacks in 2018, US corporations have nothing to show for it. Take the US buyback index, SPBUYUP, which is down YTD.

Worse, the "king of buybacks", Apple, has spent $100BN on stock repurchases in 2018, and yet recently entered a bear market, down 20% from its highs, and also below its 200D Moving average.

It's no wonder that in this environment - where seemingly uncorrelated assets can suddenly collapse together for unknown reasons - traders are extremely nervous.

They will be even more nervous when they learn that according to Bank of America, even as the S&P is fading, the ingredients of a flash crash are rising as bond / FX / equity volatility is all trending up amid vicios deleveraging events - such as the recent plunge in oil offset by a record surge in nat gas. This is largely the result of divergent central bank policies and yield differentials, which manifest themselves via abnormal spreads.

To justify the controversial claim that a crash is coming - an prediction which will only assure guarantee even more sleepless nights for already worn out millennial "traders" who are still learning how to spell "sell" - BofA CIO Michael Hartnett shows the near record 295bps spread between Libor-Euribor which was last seen on two occasions: the first time in October 99, just before the bursting of the dot com bubble, and the second time in 2006 - just before the US housing bubble burst and ushered in the global financial crisis. It is this spread that is the "tell" that a flash crash is imminent.

So what will catalyze said flash crash? To BofA, triggers could be "violent US dollar move and/or shock macro data forcing abrupt GDP & EPS downgrades." Or, to quote Leuthold Weeden's CIO, Jim Paulsen, "When this thing finally finds a bottom, panic will be everywhere."

We agree.

Trying to fund my wallet, getting error from bitgo.com

I have just installed Wasabi, and created a wallet. I copied the receiving address starting with 'b' and I am trying to send bitcoin from bitgo.com to that address, but I am getting an error.

"Please enter a valid recipient. Invalid bitcoin address"

Is this a bitgo problem, or wasabi problem?
Am I following the correct process to fund the wallet?
Is there a step-by-step guide for this?

I just noticed that BTC was falling significantly at the time of the BCH hard fork. Ultimately a hard fork is dividing a currency/community and as such not a good event.

So what's the reason? Do people worry BCH is too superior now such that there is no reason to use BTC in the long term?

Making an electronic will for my estate.....

Does anyone have any thoughts about how to transfer bitcoin wallets upon death?

Well... Really I am looking to transfer a plethora of information securely in event of my death... IE: If i retire, I want these contacts to recieve some secure messages that contain my estate information. I can't really send anyone a USB with the data encrypted, as I worry that they will peek early.

Perhaps i can tattoo my keys on the bottom of my foot, and mail some drives... First person to get the key can unlock the treasure.

Futures Falls On Chip Carnage As World Await Brexit Verdict

Stocks in Europe faded early gains and S&P futures fell after a mixed session in Asia as chip stocks were taken to the woodshed on poor guidance from Nvidia and Applied Materials sparked fears that the chip bull run is over, while investors wondered whether China and America can de-escalate their trade war after mixed signals by US officials just days before the G-20 summit.

The euro failed to rebound while the sterling halted its biggest drop in 2 years after some of the most dramatic 24 hours yet in the Brexit process and another turbulent week for world markets. With reports of a UK leadership coup still rife and fear that the country could crash out of the EU without an agreement, cable struggled to rise above $1.28.

Meanwhile traders around the world were waiting for an outcome from the ongoing Brexit saga: “If and when a vote on the withdrawal agreement occurs is uncertain. Whether the withdrawal bill is passed by both houses of Parliament is uncertain,” Joseph Capurso, a senior currency strategist at CBA, said in a note. “Whether the Prime Minister resigns or is challenged for the leadership is uncertain. And, whether there is a second referendum and/or an election is uncertain.”

Fears over political turmoil in the UK and Italy dragged Europe's Stoxx 600 back into the red, set for its first weekly drop in three, trimming Friday’s gain as AstraZeneca's drop weighed on the gauge after a cancer-drug setback while telecom names were outperforming. Utilities started the session lower in the wake of yesterday’s ECJ decision which deemed the UK’s scheme for ensuring power supplies during the winter months as a violation of state aid rules. Other individual movers include Vivendi (+4.2%) sit at the top of the Stoxx 600 after posting impressive Q3 sales metrics and announcing a potential sale of part of their Universal Music Group division. Elsewhere, AstraZeneca (-2.3%) and Shire (-1.3%) have been seen lower throughout the session after both posting disappointing drug updates.

Not helping sentiment, ECB head Mario Draghi said the bank still plans to dial back its stimulus at the end of the year, but acknowledged the economy had hit a soft patch and inflation may rise more slowly than expected. “If firms start to become more uncertain about the growth and inflation outlook, the squeeze on margins could prove more persistent,” Draghi told a conference.

Earlier in the day, Asian shares ended the session in the red (MSCI Asia -0.2% to 151.52), led lower by declines in Japan, even as China and Hong Kong rose after initial reports the United States might pause further China tariffs were denied by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross who damped hopes of any imminent trade deal with China. The Nikkei fell 0.6% pressured by a drop in the USDJPY after China Mofcom began an investigation into alleged dumping of machine tools by Japanese firms. The Hang Seng (+0.3%) and Shanghai Comp. (+0.4%) swung between gains and losses after continued liquidity inaction by the PBoC which skipped Reverse Repos for a 16th consecutive occasion.

S&P futures were hit on fresh slowdown concerns, this time out of the semiconductor/chip space, after Nvidia gave a dire sales forecast, projecting a 20% drop in revenue while a disappointing outlook from Applied Materials indicated the chip industry is holding off on expansion plans in the face of a murky outlook for electronics demand. The chipmaking sector saw another bout of selling in Asia, wiping at least $11.2 billion in market value amid signals that demand for servers, personal computers and mobile is falling.

Also falling after hours were shares of AMD and Intel, dragging Nasdaq futures lower.

"It started with Apple, then Nvidia ... Since performances of these companies set the tone for the global tech and chip industries, related Japanese stocks will likely be sluggish for a while,” said Takatoshi Itoshima, a strategist at Pictet Asset Management.

The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was little changed after Fed Chairman Powell flagged his concern over potential headwinds for the U.S. economy, while the pound staged a modest rebound on reports that some pro-Brexit ministers decided to stay in their governmental posts. The pound gained as U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May defied demands to quit and amid reports her environment secretary wouldn’t resign, following the resignation of several ministers Thursday. The yen rallied as trade stress simmered, with investors trying to gauge whether China and the U.S. can de-escalate their dispute.

Also under water was the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, which hit a one-year trough overnight. It had tumbled 10 percent early in the week when support at $6,000 gave way. It was last changing hands at $5,500 on the Bitstamp platform.

Treasuries were steady while 10-year yields on German bonds were set for their biggest weekly fall in three weeks, in a sign that the Brexit uncertainty and worries about Italy’s finances, continued to support demand. Italian bonds edged higher even as European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said in an interview with Il Sole 24 Ore that the country’s government was openly defying EU budget rules. Emerging-market currencies consolidated recent gains while oil prices extended their rebound.

Oil prices rose, helped by a decline in U.S. fuel stockpiles and the possibility of a cut in OPEC output. Brent (+1.3%) and WTI (+1.1%) are both in the green and continuing their rebound seen yesterday with WTI hovering around USD 57.00bbl. Energy newsflow remains light, post-yesterday's DoE report, however, Iraq’s North Oil Co. have announced that they have resumed Kiruk oil exports heading towards the Turkish port of Ceyhan. Looking ahead, the main highlight on the calendar will be the Baker Hughes rig count. Elsewhere, natural gas futures are relatively steady after their 19% decline yesterday which came in the wake of a 20% increase the day before.

In geopolitical news, US Republican and Democrat Senators filed a bipartisan bill seeking to suspend arms sales to Saudi Arabia in response to war in Yemen and killing of journalist. North Korean Leader Kim inspected test of new high-tech tactical weapons, according to Yonhap citing North Korean state media

Asia-Pac stocks traded indecisively as the region lacked fresh catalysts and as uncertainty regarding Brexit and US-China trade played on investor’s minds. ASX 200 (-0.1%) and Nikkei 225 (-0.6%) were choppy with outperformance of tech and mining names in Australia overshadowed by a lacklustre broader market, while the Japanese benchmark was subdued by mild flows into the JPY and after China Mofcom began an investigation into alleged dumping of machine tools by Japanese firms. Elsewhere, Hang Seng (+0.3%) and Shanghai Comp. (+0.4%) swung between gains and losses after continued liquidity inaction by the PBoC which skipped OMOs for a 16th consecutive occasion, while participants were also tentative amid ongoing trade uncertainty after conflicting reports regarding the next round of China tariffs being placed on hold which USTR Lighthizer later denied. Finally, 10yr JGBs were mildly higher with prices underpinned amid an indecisive tone seen in stocks and with the BoJ also present in the market for JPY 680bln of JGBs in the belly to super-long end.

European equities trade relatively flat (Eurostoxx 50 +0.2%) in the wake of mixed trade headlines overnight for the US and China. Performance across European indices is relatively equal whilst focus once again falls on the FTSE 100 (U/C) which remains at the whim of Brexit-inspired fluctuations in the GBP. Once again, potential upside for the index is being capped by losses in domestically focused banking names (RBS -3.0%, Lloyds -2.1%) as Brexit uncertainty continues to dampen investor sentiment. In terms of sector specifics, most sectors are trading higher with mild outperformance seen in telecom names. Utilities started the session lower in the wake of yesterday’s ECJ decision which deemed the UK’s scheme for ensuring power supplies during the winter months as a violation of state aid rules. Currencies:

  • GBP- The Pound is not the biggest net mover for a change, but still one of the most volatile and vulnerable as Cable pivots 1.2800 and Eur/Gbp trades between 0.8850-80. The fall-out from Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting continues as UK PM May strives to sell the Brexit draft, but facing a rising rebellion within the Conservative Party that appears to have reached the critical mass required to trigger a no confidence vote. However, some positive news with a key Minister deciding not to follow others out of the Government, as Gove opts to stay rather than go. In terms of technical impulses, Cable is holding above yesterday’s 1.2725 low, ahead of chart support around 1.2710-00 that protects mtd and ytd troughs at 1.2696 and 1.2662 respectively, while near term resistance is seen around 1.2836 before 1.2850, but 1 bn option expiries at 1.2800 could well exert more influence into the NY cut. For Eur/Gbp, several MAs form support blow 0.8850 and the 100 DMA at 0.8910 may hamper further gains if0.8900 is breached.
  • JPY- Maintaining a firm underlying safe-haven bid as broad risk sentiment remains fragile and China is reportedly investigating machine dumping by Japan – Usd/Jpy near the bottom of a 113.20-65 range.
  • EUR/CAD/CHF- All narrowly mixed vs the Greenback, with the single currency keeping afloat of 1.1300 and eyeing a Fib at 1.1358, while the Loonie is holding recent recovery gains through 1.3200 as oil prices continue their rebound and the Franc meanders between 1.0075-50 vs 1.1000+ earlier this week when the broad Dollar and DXY were in the ascendency (index well above 97.000 vs just below the figure presently).
  • EM- The Lira is off best levels, but still relatively bid after reports that the US could Turkish cleric Gulen in an attempt to assuage President Erdogan to adopt a less aggressive stance against Saudi Arabia over the Khashoggi killing. Usd/Try now near the middle of a 5.3240-3940 band.

In commodities, gold (+0.2%) is trading relatively flat after hitting new weekly highs of USD 1218.39/oz earlier in the session; following uneventful overnight trade. Elsewhere, Shanghai Zinc prices have risen due to London Metal Exchange stockpiles falling to decade-low levels. Brent (+1.3%) and WTI (+1.1%) are both in the green and continuing their rebound seen yesterday with WTI hovering around USD 57.00bbl. 1. General questions

Where can I download the Monero wallet?

There are multiple Monero wallets for a wide range of devices at your disposal. Check the table below for details and download links. All wallets listed below are open source. Attention: for extra security make sure to calculate and compare the checksum of your downloaded files.

Desktop wallets

Wallet Device Description Download link
"Official" GUI / CLI Windows, Mac OS X, Linux The default implementation that is maintained by the core team. Use this one to run a full node and obtain maximum privacy.Has Ledger (hardware wallet) integration. Current version: 0.13.0.3 / 0.13.0.2. GetMonero.org
MyMonero Windows, Mac OS X, Linux MyMonero is a lightweight wallet, which means you don't need to download the blockchain and run a node. MyMonero was developed with the assistance of the core team. They also have web-based and iOS versions. GitHub

How long does it take for my balance to unlock?

Your balance is unlocked after 10 confirmations (which means 10 mined blocks). A block is mined approximately every two minutes on the Monero network, so that would be around 20 minutes.

How can I prove that I sent a payment?

The fastest and most direct way is by using the ExploreMonero blockchain explorer. You will need to recover the transaction key from your wallet (complete guide for GUI / CLI).

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are dozens of exchanges that trade Monero against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Check out the list on CoinMarketCap and choose the option that suits you best.

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with fiat?

  • Kraken (USD and EUR): old-school, decent exchange. They might require your documents for verification and approval of your account.
  • LocalMonero: peer-to-peer exchange. They have pretty much everything as a payment method and they support hundreds of fiat options.

How do I mine Monero? And other mining questions.

The correct place to ask questions and discuss the Monero mining scene is in the dedicated subreddit r/MoneroMining. That being said, you can find a list of pools and available mining software in the GetMonero.org website.

2. Wallet: CLI & GUI

Why I can't see my balance? Where is my XMR?

Before any action there are two things to check:

  1. Are you using the latest available version of the wallet? A new version is released roughly every 6 months, so make sure you're using the current release (compare the release on GetMonero.org with your wallet's version on Settings, under Debug info).
  2. Is your wallet fully synchronized? If it isn't, wait the sync to complete.

Because Monero is different from Bitcoin, wallet synchronization is not instant. The software needs to synchronize the blockchain and use your private keys to identify your transactions. Check in the lower left corner (GUI) if the wallet is synchronized.

You can't send transactions and your balance might be wrong or unavailable if the wallet is not synced with the network. So please wait.

If this is not a sufficient answer for your case and you're looking for more information, please see this answer on StackExchange.

How do I upgrade my wallet to the newest version?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

Why does it take so long to sync the wallet [for the first time]?

You have decided to use Monero's wallet and run a local node. Congratulations! You have chosen the safest and most secure option for your privacy, but unfortunately this has an initial cost. The first reason for the slowness is that you will need to download the entire blockchain, which is considerably heavy (+70 GB) and constantly growing. There are technologies being implemented in Monero to slow this growth, however it is inevitable to make this initial download to run a full node. Consider syncing to a device that has an SSD instead of an HDD, as this greatly impacts the speed of synchronization.

Now that the blockchain is on your computer, the next time you run the wallet you only need to download new blocks, which should take seconds or minutes (depending on how often you use the wallet).

I don't want to download the blockchain, how can I skip that?

The way to skip downloading the blockchain is connecting your wallet to a public remote node. You can follow this guide on how to set it up. You can find a list of public remote nodes on MoneroWorld.

Be advised that when using a public remote node you lose some of your privacy. A public remote node is able to identify your IP and opens up a range for certain attacks that further diminish your privacy. A remote node can't see your balance and it can't spend your XMR.

How do I restore my wallet from the mnemonic seed or from the keys?

To restore your wallet with the 25 word mnemonic seed, please see this guide.

To restore your wallet with your keys, please see this guide.

3. Wallet: Ledger

How do I generate a Ledger Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check this page for the GUI instructions, and this page for the CLI instructions.

4. Nodes

How can my local node become a public remote node?

If you want to support other Monero users by making your node public, you can follow the instructions on MoneroWorld, under the section "How To Include Your Node On Moneroworld".

How can I connect my node via Tor?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.
