Pure PoW is DEAD

When I was 16, camping out in an airport waiting to board my first International flight to England I began chatting with a U.S. Airforce pilot who had camped up beside my group. Asking him what it was like to fly at mach speeds he replied in a very sober expression, “you have to be alert at all times. You see a mountain or some obstacle appear on the horizon, you better adjust now or you’re going to slam into it.” Maybe he was adding dramatic effect, I’ve never flown at mach speeds at low altitudes, but I never forgot it and the analogy it carries...especially so fitting for technology and progress.

This past week in cryptocurrency shined an important (and hopefully sobering) light on a “mountain” that appeared on our industries horizon...and has actually been visible to us for far too long already: Pure Proof of Work’s inevitable fate.

By pure, I mean consensus algorithms that use nothing but the original Bitcoin proof of work consensus model without updates or algorithm changes to address its weaknesses relative to the ever expanding technology used to hash it. This means Bitcoin, today’s Ethereum, Zcash, Ethereum Classic, and other coins that comprise most of the value in the top 100 cryptocurrencies. The original, unmodified form of basic PoW that most of these coins use is dead. This demise may not be fully appreciated today, but as sure as a mach-speed plane, unable to turn in time is doomed to collide with a mountain in its path, these blockchains must soon either accept their lack of security in today’s world or fork and upgrade to more effective solutions, some of which have been pioneered by smaller projects that don’t command as much hash power and therefore already had to face and address their need for extra security.

I believe it’s actually irresponsible to deny it and assume economics, hash power, market, sentiment or even self-preservation of network participants will be protection enough.

Because Bitcoin is the biggest (by market cap) of the pure PoW cryptocurrencies in existence today, I’ll establish my arguments using BTC, but the same goes for all pure PoW cryptos.

1 - Economics
Bitcoin is often defended because it has the largest market cap of all cryptocurrencies and commands most of the capable hash worldwide that might be used to attack it. It is a “store of value” with proponents of this argument relying on few factors, limited supply combined with sentiment being one of the most prominent. They believe that this limited supply will inevitably drive the price up and, somehow, bitcoin will remain unequivocally secured and established.

Bitcoin has serious limitations in its adherence to the pure PoW model, and though the realities of competition has kept it free from major 51% attacks, I predict that it’s only a matter of time before it cannot command the majority of hash power that may be used to attack it. Lack of acceptance that consensus must use more than just PoW, even when checkpoints are an already accepted as necessary augmentation, leaves Bitcoin open to a catastrophic failure at some point in the future, which would affect the short term value of every cryptocurrency, even those that have addressed and solved the most glaring security challenges of a pure PoW model. Some projects have developed and are now using more advanced, more secure technology than pure PoW, and still remain fully decentralized. This is now an area where altcoins are leading, as they fill the security vacuum. With altcoins also having smart contracts and advanced currency capabilities and being potential stores of value as well, the landscape visible on the horizon in front of us looks quite different from the smooth sailing we have seen behind us with respect to projects relying on PoW and PoW alone. I’m not suggesting that Bitcoin should try to be everything that every other altcoin is becoming, but to rely on its single function as an argument of it’s security and sustainability while refraining from important technical advancements to secure its future, is foolish. The calculator is an important, valuable, and useful tool, yet people understood that it should be part of a more multifunction solution and now carry one around inside their smartphone.

The argument supporting Bitcoin’s status quo as a pure PoW blockchain and claiming it is perfect as is for whatever particular reason, is often combined with the following and includes an argument resting on self-preservation. In other words, why would anyone be nefarious and ruin their own wealth and store of value given the enormous hash power and cost it would take to attack Bitcoin? Bitcoin, then, relies on theoretical protection with idealistic boundaries.

2 - Hash Power and Hardware Capabilities
This is sort of a 2 in 1 argument. Bitcoin is considered by many, the most secure blockchain in terms of pure hash power. In other words, more hash power is directed at Bitcoin than any other cryptocurrency and, there are limits to sha256d hashing speeds, economically and in hardware capabilities therefore it would be too expensive to attack Bitcoin and by the same token, make no sense to the attacker to do any wrong in this case (self preservation).

To assume technology, A: is limited to what we know now and B: will remain within these bounds for long, is just ignorant. What happens when sha256d can be hashed faster, when hardware innovations change the cost and capabilities involved? How do we know it isn’t possible now? What’s more, will Bitcoin always hold its position as the “special” coin due to its leading network hashpower that simply will never experience a world where there is enough available hash power from other sources to use for a 51% attack? The argument that Bitcoin will remain special is not an argument that its technology can protect it, especially with its roots as a project that grew from a figurative David with its sights set on the Goliath of the banking industry.

Look at the enormous hash power presently directed at Bitcoin and ask, what happens if that hash power is suddenly directed at another, less special coin, as part of a 51% attack? Is that other coin ready to defend in some way against that event? And how does this then impact Bitcoin? I would submit that at the end of the analysis, if the only thing protecting Bitcoin and its current technology from being doublespent to death is the fact that it is uniquely “special” because it is biggest, then as it unarguably becomes centralized among the largest Bitcoin participants and/or institutions, in an ironic way, refusal to improve technology could create exactly the systemic centralization that Satoshi was trying to prevent.

Even so, the idea that Bitcoin can always and forever remain the largest cryptocurrency and “special” as such, ignores historical realities that teach us differently. Remember “alta-vista”, the pre-Google winner of the search engine wars? Remember AOL? MySpace? The economics of bitcoin as people understand them today, the economics involved in mining pure PoW, the sentiment and value assigned to bitcoin and any coin now, can change as rapidly as Bitcoin emerged, even unexpectedly to the masses.

The ETC attack of only a few days ago just put the entire Cryptocurrency industry on notice. Any project without an active solution in place of immunity or at least a defense against a 51% hash attack is in trouble. I would argue that even though it will likely still take some time for market dynamics to enable an attacker to reasonably mount a 51% attack on the largest pure PoW cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, without new defense against such an attack, it is a question of when, not if.

The other day I identified a small handful of projects that have developed and are using defenses against 51% hash attacks, only one of which has a provable solution of hash attack immunity in place.

It’s important to note, any solution that can be seen as real progress over the Bitcoin protocol must be one that is decentralized. While some cryptocurrencies solve the 51% hash attack problem with a fully centralized approach, that truly misses the point of the original Bitcoin paper. Centralized databases are a different technology altogether, and implementing a centralized solution to a decentralized technology changes it entirely, in which case it’s more akin to just trying to brand your centralized database with the latest catch phrases to gain attention, support or funding.

Here’s a short list I identified of projects who have developed a defense or a complete solution to 51% hash attacks. To my knowledge, all of these solutions are now active on the respective project main networks, with the exception of Litecoin Cash, which is running on testnet at this time.:

  • Komodo with dPoW defense
  • Litecoin Cash with its "Hive" algo defense
  • Zencash with Horizon as a defense
  • Verus Coin, the only project I know of with provable immunity using a decentralized new “Proof of Power” consensus

As an industry, we need to face the fact that pure PoW is an incomplete solution to decentralized blockchain security in this age of cheap, fungible compute power. Pure PoW-only systems must evolve, and it’s time we look beyond to understand what are the best solutions that have evolved to address that fact. If you are part of a crypto project, no matter how large, you ignore the notice provided by the ETC attack at your own peril and the peril of your network participants.

My request is this… if you know of a project with a 51% hash attack solution, please provide some information below. If you totally disagree with the main point of this post, please provide a reasoned argument to prove me wrong or explain why pure PoW systems will remain viable indefinitely. As an industry, it’s time we see the blunt reality and apply innovation. Those who don’t will be reduced to interesting historical experiments.

r/Dashpay Barquisimeto-Venezuela. Ask Me Anything!

Hello everyone,

I am a venezuelan, I have been interested in cryptocurrencies since some years ago. Yesterday someone asked me to do an AMA in r/dashpay after I made a comment about the situation in Venezuela in r/worldnews which gained some popularity. I explained very shortly the situation with cryptocurrencies in Venezuela and the method of payment in the comment I posted in r/worldnews

I learn about Dash two years ago after reading an article on internet about the Dash, and since then I have been able to see how popular it has become here in Venezuela where many convention have taken place and more recently one in Barquisimeto in the month of october. Sadly, I couldn't go to the convention.

In Venezuela cryptocurrencies are fairly popular. They are treated as any other currency here and there have been people who have been using cryptocurrencies for its intended purpose while others use them to try to save wealth by buying cryptocurrencies with bolivars amid a shortage of foreign currencies like U.S dollars, euros, colombian pesos and brazilian reals. The market of cryptocurrencies has been growing a lot and the popularity of cryptocurrencies has only skyrocket. Facebook groups with hundreds of thousands of subscribers get articles of cryptocurrencies submitted everyday. People talk about cryptocurrencies and they have adopt it as a way to generate revenue throught airdrops some platform of cryptocurrencies do.

This is the proof someone asked for. I live in Barquisimeto and one iconic place here is the Catedral Metropolitana de Barquisimeto. I went over there to take these pictures. https://i.imgur.com/Dyiyqne.jpg https://i.imgur.com/Dyiyqne.jpg

Today there was the procession of La divina pastora, and millions of people attend to the event. I was able to take photos of the multitude https://i.imgur.com/ny2yHQ1.jpg https://i.imgur.com/raCEayf.jpg

There is an article about it, it's in spanish.

As promised, Ask me anything

Reddit account was suspended for 3 days for sharing personal information in the r/worldnews thread. I'm so sorry guys. I really wanted to do this AMA, but I will try to answer as many question as possible by editing this post.

/u/ISkiAtAlta In that case, I’d like to propose a job for you: Be a “secret shopper” for Dash.

I'm interested. I would like to know more and I will be in contact with you via PM as soon as the suspenssion is over.

/u/Critical_Input
Please list in order, the top five of ALL currencies would most Venezuelan retailers want to accept.

I would say that Bitcoin, Dash, NANO, Ethereum, and Monero are the most ideal for us, but Dash and NANO would be to do transactions to buy goods while Bitcoin and Monero would be used to store wealth. And Ethereum is very useful for the service its platform provides to make contracts.

/u/Critical_Input
What is the main reason Venezuelans would want to hold cryptocurrencies?

Cryptocurrencies are the best way to circumvent government restrictions that were implemented against citizens since some years ago. The fact that we can buy cryptocurrencies through exchanges with bolivars has somehow helped to maintain alive the economy a little. Without cryptocurrencies Venezuela's economy would be now way worse than it's now. We use them right now to store wealth, instead of holding bolivars, the best way to preserve our money. And also because they are a extremely useful technology we know will increase its value in the future.

/u/Critical_Input

People talk about cryptocurrencies

What is the talk mainly about? (price speculation? or wealth preservation? or a means of payment at merchants?)

In my workplace there are several young men like me, and whenever we talk about cryptocurrencies -which is a very recurrent topic- we like to talk about the price speculation and the projects we would like to be implemented in here. Many of us dream about exporting goods in exchange of cryptocurrencies knowing it will boost the economy so much many people will benefit from it. We also talk about starting our own businesses and start accepting cryptocurrencies.

/u/Critical_Input
Have you purchased something with a cryptocurrency? (YES or NO)

Not yet because I have never had any for myself. I knew people who had some bitcoin cash but they never used it to pay for something, however, people in Venezuela has been able to sell cars, motorcycles and even houses in exchange of ethereum and bitcoin.

/u/Critical_Input
(aside from tips) How would you acquire cryptocurrencies. Does a website come to mind?

I would like to get paid in cryptocurrencies for sure, either by starting my entreprise producing and exporting decorative pieces which is what I do as a job in the workshop. Or get my salary paid in cryptocurrencies at least. I would be better than receiving bolivars.

Whether it's buying in exchange of bolivars, I would say that localbitcoins.com and localethereum.com are the websites I would go to buy Bitcoin or ethereum.

/u/Critical_Input
1) What cryptocurrencies do you suspect are the most popular in Venezuela?

Bitcoin because the government has been talking about it a lot. But Dash has the largest community in Venezuela for what I know.

/u/hibpr
Do you think it’s possible for cryptocurrencies like Dash to really become a payment of choice in a few years assuming government is still there?

Dash is already said to be used as method of payment in different stores. I don't go out so much because I have to take care of my sisters here in my houses, but so far I have not seen one store accepting Dash but probably I have not look out there enough. I think it's a matter of time until most stores and people start adopting cryptocurrencies to do businesses and transactions. I doesn't matter if the current government stay or a new one is formed, the damaged is already caused, and venezuelans will not trust the next currency. Cryptocurrencies like Dash, in the other hand, are more promising and in a few years, it's probable Dash will be use widespread to do transactions.

/u/ObjectiveChange
How do you spend your money considering the situation in Venezuela?

I spend all of my income buying cornmeal. Before the crisis, I didn't had a job because I was studying highschool. Today was able to buy a lot of meat thanks to the help and money people from Reddit and r/dashpay sent me. I was able to buy 10 kilos of meat, something I have wanted to do since years but I have not been able due to my income. In total I spent $15 buying meat, cheese and eggs, and sauces. This is the receipt they gave me in Garzón, a retail store in Barquisimeto https://i.imgur.com/gCtRXP8.jpg The cheese and the eggs were bought somewhere else and they don't give receipts.

If Venezuela were not going through this crisis, I would use part of my money to invest in cryptocurrencies.

How to manipulate syndicate?

So I am seriously confused with this. I've read several guides, and I feel like the person who doesn't understand what bitcoin is. Let's say I want to follow this guide:

https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/adalk0/loot_from_farming_syndicate_in_the_harbour_bridge/

345chaos per hour seems pretty insane. I wouldn't be surprised if over my 284 hrs, I've earned roughly that much. So I'm trying to follow it, like 4hrs of farming syndicate in harbour bridge and I've gained about 3chaos worth of currency. No one has dropped any scarabs or whatever. I honestly just want a quick 2 exalts so I can finally get Inpulsa, but it feels like I'm progressing at a snail's pace.

One problem I'm having is levelling someone to max. I know that executing a member ranks them up, but I don't understand what I'm supposed to do if they don't give me that option. Or if I can execute them, but that will also move them to a different area which I don't want to happen. Or I'm confused why it's worth interrogating anyone at rank 1, which I only do if their other option is something like "remove someone I want to keep from syndicate" or "get rid of all items/rivalries"

Another example, the guide says to get Gravicus/Rin/Cameria in leadership position for intervention, because they drop scarabs. Now I just defeated a rank 3 Gravicus and rank 2 Leo in intervention, yet the syndicate board shows Gravicus is captain of research?? I can betray him, and he will destroy all items of intervention. Or betray Leo= +1rank to intervention -1 rank to research. What am I even supposed to do here.

And the guide I'm trying to follow says they regularly blocked transportation/fortification encounters. What do they mean by blocked?

Edit: Just made it to mastermind for the 1st turn. Do I do it, or can I just ignore the mastermind? I know that doing mastermind will reset everything, which makes me wonder if I should just do it because it does seem like it will be easier.

Market Analysis: All Major Cryptocurrencies Up 4-10 Percent, Tron (TRX) Rallies 15 Percent

https://i.redd.it/b5m4txn0zga21.png

https://cryptoiq.co/market-analysis-all-major-cryptocurrencies-up-4-10-percent-tron-trx-rallies-15-percent/

The crypto market has been like a rollercoaster the past couple of days. Yesterday, Bitcoin (BTC) plunged from $3,620 to $3,500 in less than 30 minutes, and today, Bitcoin rallied from $3,530 to $3,670 in about an hour.

Afterward, the price of Bitcoin slowly increased to $3,700 but has now dropped a bit and is near $3,660 as of this writing. This represents a four percent gain for Bitcoin (BTC) in the past day. Other major cryptocurrencies have done even better.

Ripple (XRP) is up five percent; Ethereum (ETH) is up 10 percent; Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is up six percent; Bitcoin SV (BSV) is up five percent; EOS is up nine percent; Stellar (XLM) is up five percent; Dash is up five percent; Dogecoin (DOGE) is up four percent;  and Litecoin (LTC) is up six percent. IOTA, which is the number one directed acyclic graph (DAG) cryptocurrency is up five percent. The privacy coins Monero (XMR) and Zcash (ZEC) are both up six percent.

The biggest success story of the day is Tron (TRX) with a 15 percent rally. Tron (TRX) has truly been on a rollercoaster this past month with a 170 percent price increase followed by a 36 percent price drop, and now today’s rally. Today’s price action could possibly be a double peak, which is common when speculative bubbles pop. Yesterday it was speculated that the current Tron (TRX) market may turn into a pump and dump.

The rallies of all major cryptocurrencies have caused an increase in the total cryptocurrency market cap from $117 billion to $123.5 billion (5.5 percent). Currently, the cryptocurrency market cap is almost exactly the same as it was before yesterday’s crash. Therefore, today’s price action has simply recovered yesterday’s losses.

Ethereum (ETH) is perhaps back to rally mode because of speculation that the Constantinople hard fork coming in less than a few days will be a good thing for Ethereum (ETH) since it slashes the inflation rate and lowers transaction fees. Ethereum (ETH) has gained ground on Ripple’s (XRP) market cap and is only $300 million away from re-taking the number two spot, whereas yesterday Ethereum (ETH) was $900 million behind Ripple (XRP).

Miners are the ones losing out from the slashing of the Ethereum (ETH) inflation rate, i.e. the block reward, from three Ether to two, and tension between miners and developers may cause price turbulence for Ethereum (ETH) and ERC-20 tokens in the coming weeks. Numerous cryptocurrencies in the top 100 on CoinMarketCap are ERC-20 tokens.

Perhaps an event that could influence the crypto market in coming days is the Bitcoin futures expiration on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBoE) on Jan. 16. January appears to be a month dominated by short sellers, so perhaps short sellers on CBoE will bang the close and cause Bitcoin’s (BTC) price to decline right before expiration to increase their short-selling profits.

$3,900 continues to be the level to watch since that is likely where Bitcoin futures traders on CME took out their monthly short positions. Bitcoin (BTC) has some freedom to go upwards before encountering strong resistance at that level. As the Jan. 25 CME Bitcoin futures expiration approaches, the chance of a Bitcoin (BTC) price drop becomes more likely.

If you think Tether is a scam, read this

Have you guys been thinking about the current state and levels of manipulation?

Are we (as a crypto community) aware that the BTC (and all other cryptos) supply is probably not really 21m?

There have been a few red flags that indicate that exchanges can easily use fractional reserve for the actual on-chain Bitcoins that are on their wallets, print BTC internally (of course, they can't modify it on the blockchain, but those Bitcoins live in their SQL databases) and dump it in their users (also triggering stop losses precisely if needed)?

Monitoring the on-off ratio (Coindesk posted a chart a week ago) which measures the ratio between transactions that are supposedly organic vs transactions that are going on exchanges, and it turns out the majority of the transactions are between users and exchanges, but (this is directly from a source) exchanges dont need more than 5% of their holdings in order to satisfy the withdrawals. Another red flag was HitBTC disabling withdrawals for the Proof of Keys event (the reason -> they probably have pretty low BTC coverage).

Exchanges could easily pump the price, unload fake BTC until the price dumps (in this case 80%+) and then buy back and try to get the coverage back to 1:1 ratio. Even if they dont, the fractional reserve system proved that it can live with fairly low coverage without any issues for a very long time.

Speaking from history, most unregulated territories in finance always ended up with scandals and people going to prison, but so far there have not been any dramatic events yet in crypto and we have so many shady exchanges and washtraded volume -> I am definitely sure that this is coming.. this is not only unregulated but shady (due to the possibility to stay anonymous easier than in the traditional financial world). Also, this is not only for BTC but literally for all the cryptos (its even easier for non-BTC coins because most of them have bigger % inflation to BTC).

From one side, if there are events like this (which the red flags and the logic makes me believe in this completely), it means that the “actual” BTC price is higher, but on the other side, people that are invested are literally exposed to a possible ponzi, because if its fractional reserve in crypto, its probably fractional reserve in FIAT, so those dollars/euros that we see on the exchanges are not really there (at least not all of them).

Conclusion: Exchanges are (or can easily be) shady central banks in this case and there is no chance that all of the exchanges are legit.

IF and when this industry gets regulated and all the scandals get exposed and cleaned, I will be back. For now, I would like to stay on the sidelines (after being BTC maximalist for many years) because this is really scary. Not to mention that if this is the case, we have the exact structure as synthetic CDOs in 2008 -> you buy ETH/BTC pair with fake BTC -> create at least 3x market cap increase in ETH (that's why it always pumps more) -> buy ETH/RANDOM_ERC20 here -> create 20x value (you can actually pump some coin 900% with 5k$). I honestly think that the actual amount of money put is probably a fraction of the total market cap -> 10% (12b$ atm).

China Introduces Regulations For Blockchain Firms

On January 10, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) announced new regulations for the blockchain companies that the agencies claim will ‘promote healthy development’ of the technology. The new rules will require blockchain platforms to remove “undesirable” content. Furthermore, authorities will now be able to check private data stored by the companies and the identity of users. Although the government appears to be coming down hard on blockchain companies, it is in favor of this technology over Cryptocurrencies.

China Says New Regulations Good For Industry

Beijing has introduced Internet Information Service Management Measures that will guide blockchain-based companies in the country. In a press release, CAC claimed that the new measures will promote the healthy development of the technology and associated services. The new measures will come into effect on February 15.

In the wake of increasing popularity of blockchain and Cryptocurrencies, China has been aggressive towards protecting its economy. With regard to the new measures, CAC said they are only intended to safeguard national security and public interest. The measures will also protect the rights and interests of the Chinese people.

Anonymity Stripped Under New Laws

The new measures will now require blockchain companies to use actual names when registering users. Furthermore, the users will also be supposed to provide their mobile numbers and national identity. Consequently, blockchain providers will not provide their services to users who fail to give this information. From Feb. 15, the companies will be forced to release stored data that is seen as a threat to state or contravenes existing national laws.

In case of introduction of new updates to any of their products, blockchain companies will have to report to the authority. Moreover, the companies must “accept social supervision.” According to CAC, any company that fails to adhere to these rules will be subject to prosecution and fines that range from 5,000 yuan to 30,000 yuan ($700 to $4,400).

Despite the introduction of the new rules on blockchain companies, China appears to tolerate the technology. This could be explained by the many uses of the distributed ledger technology outside the realm of virtual currency. CAS has also come forward to defend the new measures claiming they are good for the industry and will help to improve its standards.

Experts Views On The New Measures

When the news about the new regulations on blockchain companies first emerged a few months ago, there were those who supported the move while others criticized it. One of those who viewed the new laws positively is a Chinese Crypto expert called Mia Tam. He noted that the new regulations shouldn’t seem like a threat, especially among those giving honest views about the technology.

However, Jake Choi, CMO at Fantom was among the first industry players to criticize the move. He said that Cryptocurrencies were developed with the aim of decentralizing the monetary system and allowing users to transact while maintaining their privacy. The new regulations strip blockchain users their right to anonymity. Fantom is a smart contract platform that uses DAG.

A Story: the quest for love has taken it's toll

You have heard the expression "it's better to have loved and loss, than never to have loved at all."

Lies, what folk often forget is the psychological and emotional toll that multiple failed relationships have on people, each one chips away at your mental health and adds baggage that stays with you for most of your life.

I have no idea what day it is today but I start each morning with tears flooding my face and a crippling desire to not exist anymore. I'd like to drop my life story here on the offhand that someone, somewhere, reads this and can relate with me on some level - throwaway for good measure, brace yourself for a really long read, location: UK/NO

Early life:I was lucky enough that my family could afford to place me in a posh school for pretentious wizards. Unfortunately this education was wasted on me as my depression unwillingly began when I was thirteen years old, yet I could not comprehend what depression was at this age. I was also addicted to the video game: world of warcraft (WoW). Both the cloudyness of being down and the constant thought of when can I get home for my 'fix' left me void of motivation to partake in education.

University life: I had zero social skills due to 200+ days I had racked up in WoW but somehow managed to land a girl from a club, let's call her X, X was half British and half Norwegian, she was shy, family orientated and equally inexperienced in life. We did nothing but watch TV, the rest of this chapter is boring, let's fast forward.

UK worklife: Through the aid of a lecturer I scored a job working for a top US ISP in a data centre 5 hours north where I lived, the city was dirty and work gave me crippling anxiety. When you're anxious + depressed your judgement is clouded, colors are less vivid and all food tastes the same. I constantly made elementary mistakes which only made the anxiety and depression worse, I never focused in school and the stimulation from gaming destroyed my attention span. Four years past and although she never vocalize these words, X really wanted to start a family. X was also an engineer and quite intelligent. We had spontaneous intercourse one night and later I worried it could lead to a pregnancy, she reassured me it was impossible on her current cycle. I return after a twelve hour night shift to discover a positive pregnancy test, prominently left on the bathroom counter. I was twenty one years old with no life experience, shocked and dismayed, did I even love X or did I simply love the security a relationship brings? I push for an abortion and she reluctantly agrees (I know, I'm an asshole). Things get weird, nothing is familiar anymore. I'm tired of my job, hate the dirty city and pose the idea to X that we move to Norway, she's fluent, I'm lost, what could go wrong?

Grand adventure: I got a job for another US tech company before leaving UK, we travel to Oslo with our possessions and Gandalf the dog and ferry and drive our way across UK, up Denmark and across to Norway. I did not integrate well, mostly my fault and the fact we moved based on a semi ultimatum. X is unemployed for 6 months. We had been dating six years at this point, I had an emerald engagement ring. X finally gets a programmer job but cheats on me with the guy twice her age who mentored her. I spiral hard, new country, confused, lost, heartbroken, they speak great English in Norway but I didn't know any Norwegian and this blew my anxiety and depression up. I drink for a week straight. I got into bitcoin and crypto mining as a hobby before it exploded, then I discovered this could be used to buy narcotics off the darkweb.

Twenty six years old and I'd never touched a cigarette or drugs other than alcohol. I buy benzodiazepines off the darknet. This opened the floodgates as it temporarily cured my 'issues' and my quest was to try the rest.

V: Before online dating turned to shit I met V, half Norwegian half American, lots of fun, I kept up the drug routine and expanded my desk draw with a variety of disassociatives, psychadelics, depressants and stimulants. I wanted to move to California with V as our vacations there were eye opening, I got denied after roughly 150 job applications, serendipitously I got a targeted email from a renowned tech company doing R&D work in the video conferencing market, dream company and dream job, depression and anxiety prevail. V and I still had fun but I went crazy and occasionally psychotic. I pushed V away and we split and then realised I was back to square X, this prompted my first suicide attempt using a litre of sambuca, 50mg diazapam and a gram of mdma in the hopes my organs would cook whilst I was in a benzo sleep state, I took the pills and put the bottle to my head, I passed out before I could reach for the mdma baggy. I woke up in hospital ICU 36 hours later. When I woke the first thing I tried to do is strangle myself with the beeping machines power cable, staff intervened and I was placed in a psych ward for a while.

The dream: The job was perfect, I should be happy, I was under qualifyied but these people enjoy the stories and bullshit I spew in interviews. Two years pass, nothing changes, I'm lonely, abuse takes over. Usual life is pointless angle, I've tested all the drugs at this point except opioids. I order heroin with the sole intention of permanent overdose. No toleranse I snort there entire bag, I sink into my bed, no, further, I sank through the ground and down into the earth's crust. It felt horrible. A part of me didn't want to die, just sleep forever, I call my Swedish friend and explain the overdose, he calls and ambulance.

Hell: I wake up in hospital very psychotic, everyone is trying to kill me, the walls are caving in and extremely colorful smoke floods the room, the tv gives reports of a male rapist and the possible suspect is me, I feel the hospital is in on the jig and see them trying to take DNA from me (blood) in an attempt to frame me for this non existed crime (why would Norwegian news be in English?). One night I escape, I run far but I don't know where I am or how to navigate the hospital, security track me down and escort me back to my bed. The next day a tall in stature, ripped, private security guard appears at my door. Yes! Finally protection from the nurses with no faces and the snipers outside that I've been ducking all week. Wrong, so, so, wrong, I later found out he was there to stop me escaping and to protect the staff from me. I cried in broad daylight when I figured this out. Doctors told me they ran MRI's in the extended duration I was unconscious to check for brain activity, no dignity left at this point. Fast forward, back to the psych ward, familiar faces.

Realization: I was staying in this country simply for the job yet I was still insanely depressed, lonely and no ambition to integrate with the knowledge of the fact that I'm here only because of X. I met another girl called Y, we bonded over drugs unfortunately, this is what my life has become, she was nice but attraction faded, we lived together for six months on and off, work was getting more intense I was making more mistakes due to the usual three things, Y had a hash smoking habit, we smoked a lot but I couldn't handle the pressure anymore and I decide to move back to England.

Familiar land: My tech job and incredible manager let me teleconference work from home for a bit whilst I landed on my feet. Problem is I never landed, I stayed with my mom for a bit, she has bipolar and schizophrenia. This is after my parents divorce, my dad was an esteemed doctor, saw the signs, tried his best but couldn't help as she did not believe there was a problem but everyone else is looking at the fucking huge elephant in the room - I'm talking about the mental health stigma, not my mom, she's only mildly obese. She is money obsessed, she divorced my dad for cash. She knew I had an engineer job and wanted me to fund renovations on the house she got from the 60/40 cash split in the divorce. I did not oblige, and called her irrational over some remarks she made. Her response was "well atleast I haven't been in as many psych wards as you" I got mad and flipped a table in the hall, nothing got damaged, heated reaction. She called the police on me for... not paying her lifestyle, or making noise. Anyway, her property her rules, the really friendly and pretty cool police obliged and drove me to my dad at a secret location due to being afraid of what my mom is capable of. I don't want to go down this road but my father lives a lot of secrecy and I could write a book on the psychology that binds his half of the family together.

New beginnings: I rush and find rented accommodation. Things seem good. I meet a new girl Z. Now Z is incredibly rude but I was attracted to her dark and dirty side. Relationship moves fast, she drunkenly says I love you multiple times but then forgets it happened at the two week mark. I meet her entire family, we argued over some trivial things, she also lived 80 minutes from my 'home', she broke it off after a pitiful six weeks. I make new guy friends and the next months go well. However, depression kicks in full drive, I can't focus, function, I just want sleep, or constant sleep? I order a bunch of oxy and heroin and this is attempt four (shan't speak of #three as it was really dumb). I nodded out and awake god knows how many hours later which is really confusing and at the time more depressing. I can't even off myself, how depressing is that! I was out for a very long period of time and developed a blood clot or some issue requiring ultrasounds and blood thinners on my leg. The next two months were painful.

Goodbye Tech: last October I just couldn't handle the stress, anxiety, guilt of underperforming, so on and so forth. So I yolo resigned and went travelling. I went through Japan and I went to one of my best friends who lives in Washington, US. I had an incredible time, my friend in US understands me on all levels but our time came to and end. I'm back home, the past three months have been spent laying in my bed, in my room, abusing myself with zero ambition to even search for a job whilst burning through my savings. These four walls will be the death of me. I'm in therapy once a week (by choice this time) and I self medicate because I'm not only an armchair psychologist, but also an armchair pharmacist.

There are many stories omitted from this quasi autobiography but consider it 8 easy steps to fuk your life. There's a scene in Fight Club where the plane Edward Norton is on takes off too sharply and collides with another plane and the passengers either get obliterated on impact or sucked into the void. I travel. When I do I play that scene in my head and cross my fingers. Death by a carriers negligence? Sympathy flows, you're almost a martyr somehow. Suicide - you're considered selfish. Thanks society.

Written on mobile so apologies for format, please let me know if this should be posted to other subs that maybe more relevant. I'm not expecting the answer or boat loads of support - I just wanted to vent.

Tl;dr: I have no real family, I have friends but I'm too introverted and depressed to do anything with them or join them for events. Every relationship implodes for a variety of reasons. I'm. So. Fucking. Lonely. Help. Me.

UX - Lykke vs Jaxx Liberty

To give some context, I am new to the subject of UX and BitCoin Wallet, so I may have missed some important parts to guide me or unintentionally regarded them as not important (regarding the usage of the apps). So, let’s start with the first app Jaxx Liberty and then with the Lykke.

My main goal is to share my experience with the two application and hopefully help to get foot into the world of bitcoin and UX. I found that using Lykke was much more comfortable then Jaxx Liberty and I will explain in detail why I came to this conclusion in the following paragraphs.

Constructive criticism is happly accepted.

I will first summaries, point out the critique and conclude my thoughts about the application Jaxx Liberty and then proceed to the second application Lykke.

Jaxx Liberty: You start by creating your new wallet and proceed until you see the main site of the application. The structure of the main page is modular but you would expect it to be intuitive which is not the case. At this point you do not know what to do next and you are kind of lost in this application. Then you start clicking randomly through all the let’s say modules. When you go to ‘Global Settings’ you see Security, Settings and Tools and what you can modify or set. You can set a security password or a backup wallet but even if you do that, the explanation regarding the use is not clear. To someone who is new or even bit advanced, is seems that not only is it not intuitive but also the explanation for the different modules or settings are not sufficient to guide.

The usability of Jaxx Liberty is not ideal because it is not intuitive to use the application. First, you do not know, do I need to set a password or what is the backup wallet for. The background color looks not reliable to me and save to use the application. That is the perception I have while using the application.

In the wallet settings you are easily confused because there is an overload information and you see too many options. In the ‘Manage Wallets’ as a user you see to many possibilities without an explanation what it actually is. The modules look like news widgets and the functions are not self-explanatory which makes it harder to navigate through the app and find your needs. You can customize your interface which provides you with the flexibility.

Overall, I would not use the app because it lacks an intuitive design which does cost me additional effort, time and frustration to navigate and find what I really want.

Lykke: The first steps are ether you sign in or register and since I am a new user I will register. The procedure to register has the typical steps to type your username, password, email, fingerprint and verify the email and more but these are steps which most people are familiar and its intuitive. As you go through these steps you set up your wallet with ease. On the image on the left you type the necessary information to get access through verification and also to be able to complete your profile. As soon as the your profil resp. wallet is set up by going through the process then you will see the main screen of Lykke. You have the taskbar with the home, assets, trade and More icons which gives a practical overview of the functions. In the home screen you see the icons in a modular setup displayed.

The application is well made in the viewpoint of usability because as a user you know where you are at certain moment. The app is intuitive to use, and the background color gives you kind of the feeling of a safe environment and you trust the app/service. A negative point is that it has no CHF as base asset. With just a few clicks you can transfer your bitcoins.

Overall, I would use the application Lykke because it's an intuitive and reliable software to use. Also getting used to the application does not take much time which is really convenient in this era of need for instant gratification.

I wanted to move to California with V as our vacations there were eye opening, I got denied after roughly 150 applications, serendipitously I got a targeted email from a renowned tech company doing R&D work in the video conferencing market, dream company and dream job, depression and anxiety prevail.

*The dream: * The job was perfect, I should be happy, I was under qualifying but these people enjoy the stories and bullshit I spew in interviews.

The next day a tall in stature, ripped private security guard appears at my door. Yes! Finally protection from the nurses with no faces and the snipers outside. Wrong, so, so, wrong, I later found out he was there to stop me escaping and to protect me from the staff. I cried in broad daylight when I figured this out.

I did not oblige, and called her irrational over some remarks she made her response was "well atleast I haven't been in as many psych wards as you" I got mad and flipped a table in the hall, nothing got damaged, heated reaction.

Written on mobile so apologies for format, please let me know if this should be x-posted to other subs that maybe more relevant. I'm not expecting the answer or boat loads of support - I just wanted to vent.

Tl;dr: I have no real family, I have friends but I'm too introverted and depressed to do anything with them or join them for events. Every relationship implodes for a variety of reasons. I'm. So. Fucking. Lonely. Help. Me.
