Community Observation: 2019.09.29 - The Dip

There has been a dip in prices of mainstream cryptocurrencies. In my opinion, there are a few reasons for the dip:

  1. The trading volume on Bakkt fell short of expectations. Cryptocurrencies seem to be very far away from mainstream trading markets.
  2. Bitcoin Core team is planning to remove BIP70 payment protocol to counter Bitpay. This raised doubts about the decentralization of Bitcoin.
  3. IBM unveiled its latest quantum computers. The security of conventional cryptography is under doubts.

At least four exchanges joined hands in short-selling. Exchanges have always been the major short-selling force of Bitcoin. A few mainstream exchanges working together would of course lead to an inevitable dip.

When the first three events occured around the same time, exchanges would not let such a good opportunity slip by. It’s difficult for exchanges to not do evil. In such an intense, cruel competition, those who don’t make the best of opportunities will be eliminated.

Taking Colin's vision forward: As promised, the meetup in New Delhi is now live in partnership with Nano Foundation and Kappture Labs. Please support!

Hello everyone, it's time for Nano to shine in India. A couple of months ago, Colin suggested the real use case of Nano lies in the developing nations of the world. Since I have been organizing Bitcoin/Blockchain in Delhi for the past 4 years. It only made sense for me to organize one that focused most on Nano! Soon after I made a post here about doing exactly that in India and it was very well received by you all.

The good news is that the event is finally live and people can start booking their tickets here: http://everythingblockcha.in/

But the bad news is that I have no sponsors for the meetup. One of the two companies in the sponsorship section is mine and the other one is my friend's, who is also coming as a speaker. Without the money, it's hard to organize the event, let alone print Nano shirts and distribute them to the audience (which was the plan).

This is why I need support from the community. If you have blockchain startup or use Nano on your website or you'd like to speak at the event (you don't have to be there physically, we can always live stream), consider sponsoring this event.

If you'd just like to support by donating, go to the bottom of the website: http://everythingblockcha.in/

Thank you! :)

PS: If you print shirts, mugs, stickers for Nano, please DM me.

How to beat Bitcoin like a pro (Beginners quick guide)

  • Bitcoin is the most secure network on the planet, However, never invest more than you are willing to lose.
  • Hardware wallets are the most secure way to store Bitcoin (Trezor & Ledger)
  • Not your keys not your Bitcoin (Do not hold large amounts of bitcoin on an exchange)
  • Read up on the many scams out there, never trust your BTC or private keys to a 3rd party (Absolutely never)
  • Steer clear of altcoins. ("Shitcoins" all are scams, even your favorite fast and shitty one, a scam too)
  • Don't get greedy (Don't "trade" Bitcoin like a stock, you will get rekt. No one knows the future)
  • Learn what DCA is (Dollar Cost Averaging)
  • There are many ways you can increase your privacy (Pay with cash, Mixers, Lightning Network)
  • Hodl (Don't feed the whales!!!)

Enjoy the discounted Bitcoin this weekend!

Mention that i hear from him very soon.

Fffuck, how do you think bitcoin is better. Does your phone has been the last five years? That last one, why are you even doing anything tonight, Man... No event tickets. Even now as i do think you're right. You're stuttering, making it more painful, it's not even a shart; it's over, all right, no, it's not even if i flip this next one: you're already ready to interrupt the day we die, mothafkaa!

How long does it take for my balance to unlock?

Your balance is unlocked after 10 confirmations (which means 10 mined blocks). A block is mined approximately every two minutes on the Monero network, so that would be around 20 minutes.

How can I prove that I sent a payment?

The fastest and most direct way is by using the ExploreMonero blockchain explorer. You will need to recover the transaction key from your wallet (complete guide for GUI / CLI).

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are dozens of exchanges that trade Monero against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Check out the list on CoinMarketCap and choose the option that suits you best.

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with fiat?

  • Kraken (USD and EUR): old-school, decent exchange. They might require your documents for verification and approval of your account.
  • LocalMonero: peer-to-peer exchange. They have pretty much everything as a payment method and they support hundreds of fiat options.

How can I quickly exchange my Monero (XMR) for Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are multiple ways to exchange your Monero for Bitcoin, but first of all, I'd like to remind you that if you really want to do your part for Monero, one of the simplest ways is to get in touch with your merchant/service provider and request for it to accept Monero directly as payment. Ask the service provider to visit the official website and our communication channels if he or she needs help with system integration.

That being said, the community has been recommending two services in particular, XMR.TO and MorphToken. These services are only recommendations and are operated by entities outside the control of the Monero Project. Be diligent.

How do I mine Monero? And other mining questions.

The correct place to ask questions and discuss the Monero mining scene is in the dedicated subreddit r/MoneroMining. That being said, you can find a list of pools and available mining software in the GetMonero.org website.

2. Wallet: CLI & GUI

Why I can't see my balance? Where is my XMR?

Before any action there are two things to check:

  1. Are you using the latest available version of the wallet? A new version is released roughly every 6 months, so make sure you're using the current release (compare the release on GetMonero.org with your wallet's version on Settings, under Debug info).
  2. Is your wallet fully synchronized? If it isn't, wait the sync to complete.

Because Monero is different from Bitcoin, wallet synchronization is not instant. The software needs to synchronize the blockchain and use your private keys to identify your transactions. Check in the lower left corner (GUI) if the wallet is synchronized.

You can't send transactions and your balance might be wrong or unavailable if the wallet is not synced with the network. So please wait.

If this is not a sufficient answer for your case and you're looking for more information, please see this answer on StackExchange.

How do I upgrade my wallet to the newest version?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

Why does it take so long to sync the wallet [for the first time]?

You have decided to use Monero's wallet and run a local node. Congratulations! You have chosen the safest and most secure option for your privacy, but unfortunately this has an initial cost. The first reason for the slowness is that you will need to download the entire blockchain, which is considerably heavy (+70 GB) and constantly growing. There are technologies being implemented in Monero to slow this growth, however it is inevitable to make this initial download to run a full node. Consider syncing to a device that has an SSD instead of an HDD, as this greatly impacts the speed of synchronization.

Now that the blockchain is on your computer, the next time you run the wallet you only need to download new blocks, which should take seconds or minutes (depending on how often you use the wallet).

I don't want to download the blockchain, how can I skip that?

The way to skip downloading the blockchain is connecting your wallet to a public remote node. You can follow this guide on how to set it up. You can find a list of public remote nodes on MoneroWorld.

Be advised that when using a public remote node you lose some of your privacy. A public remote node is able to identify your IP and opens up a range for certain attacks that further diminish your privacy. A remote node can't see your balance and it can't spend your XMR.

How do I restore my wallet from the mnemonic seed or from the keys?

To restore your wallet with the 25 word mnemonic seed, please see this guide.

To restore your wallet with your keys, please see this guide.

3. Wallet: Ledger

How do I generate a Ledger Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check this page for the GUI instructions, and this page for the CLI instructions.

4. Nodes

How can my local node become a public remote node?

If you want to support other Monero users by making your node public, you can follow the instructions on MoneroWorld, under the section "How To Include Your Node On Moneroworld".

How can I connect my node via Tor?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

New Spyware Replaces Crypto Wallets On Clipboard Via Telegram

Moreover, the malware also includes a function that replaces cryptocurrency wallets from the clipboards with the one by the attacker’s party. According to the report, the spyware’s clipping supports a number of major cryptos such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), XRP, Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Litecoin (LTC), among others.

Homeland Security Awarded Funds To Austrian Company Creating Compatibility For Blockchain Efforts
The Department of Homeland Security awarded a $143,000 other transaction solicitation Sept. 27 to an Austrian company to create compatibility for the agency’s different data formats and blockchain efforts throughout the department. The money was awarded by the DHS Science and Technology Directorate (DHS S&T) to Danube Tech GmbH to develop blockchain security technology as the department seeks to combat forgery and counterfeiting.
According to the news release, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Transportation Security Administration and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services all have responsibilities for data that can be secured using blockchain. These agencies are responsible for processes like identity verification, immigration status, employment eligibility and supply chain security. Using blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT), the agencies could issue credentials digitally, which would “enhance security, ensure interoperability, and prevent forgery and counterfeiting,” the release said.

Libra Association Continues Push For European Acceptance
Libra Association meant to manage and handle the debut of Facebook’s proposed cryptocurrency Libra has been dealing with some setbacks involving its acceptance, especially from Germany and France, who say they won’t allow the currency to move forward. Reuters is reporting that despite the opposition, the association is still talking to European Union regulators in an attempt to release the currency by 2020. Perez, who worked in a senior-level position at PayPal before joining Libra, is working diligently to overcome the regulatory and oppositional obstacles facing the currency. Depending on how much progress he makes, the cryptocurrency could launch as early as June of 2020. He also said that a delay of a quarter or two wouldn’t be a big problem.

Stablecoin Regulations Would Need To Eliminate Risks Regarding Liquidity Of Underlying Assets, Claims IMF
As Central Banks across the world start looking into cryptocurrencies and DLT to see how feasible a fiat-backed digital currency would be, the IMF (International Monetary Fund) has now entered the conversation as well, publishing a blog post exploring the advantages of a privately issued stablecoin, one which is backed by central bank reserves. The biggest problem governments are likely to face with such a plan is their lack of expertise with regards to intuitively designed and efficient platforms. And while Central Banks are not likely to approve a fiat-backed digital currency, an offering like USDC or Facebook’s Libra, could simply be more efficient.
The IMF says that regulations will need to eliminate risks regarding liquidity of the underlying assets and that they should be protected from other creditors, if the stablecoin provider goes bankrupt.

If the $8,000 barrier is not held, it is possible to test support around $7,500 below. In terms of operation, the stage bottom still needs time to polish. It is suggested that the storage space should be controlled at about 50%.
