[Daily BAT Discussion] Hark, the BAT Signal! - October 17, 2018

October 17, 2018

Hey BAT friends! Welcome to the Daily BAT Discussion!

Yesterday's Market Movements: Up, Baby!

We had another day of excitement in crypto. Coinbase officially added ZRX to their primary purchasing platform (non-Pro), and ZRX shot up 30%. Not long after, BAT followed suit with some hefty gains, albeit not quite as much. We ran up from around high 2700 sats all the way to 3100 satoshis this morning ($0.21). Bitcoin is slowly inching up around the $6400 area, with what looks to be declining sell pressure and slight increase in price. We could see another Bitcoin takeoff in the coming weeks (though don't get too frisky, or blame me if it goes south!). On a separate note, it looks like the BAT/ETH ratio is as high as ever!

Tune in next time to the same BAT time, same BAT channel! (We're also available on the Telegram channel so come on in!) Good luck out there, folks! Remember, invest responsibly!!

V-ID Token Pre-Sale Live! Everything is Becoming Digital

https://i.redd.it/mlkgoyumros11.png

About V-ID

  1. The V-ID validation service uses blockchain technology to end all document fraud.
  2. Our client base, with customers like Airbus Space & Defence, operates in various fields, including education, medical, research, and tech. V-ID has an operational platform for paying customers. You can visit the MVP on https://www.v-id.org
  3. As an existing company specialized in secure communication tools, V-ID is a supplier of API’s that can seamlessly integrate blockchain validation services into any other system or platform. In this way, V-ID is transforming into a market leader in file fraud protection, just like SSL has become for secure internet connections.
  4. V-ID tokens will serve as a native payment system for validation and the sale event allows you to buy V-ID tokens with signing bonuses. Furthermore, we can guarantee exchange listing through our partnership with Alterdax.

V-ID Token

Technique

  1. Blockchain Ethereum (ERC20)
  2. Proof Type Not mineable

Technical = Non-native Protocol Token The V-ID utility token is an ERC20 token that is used to identify wallet addresses (for issuers / validating parties) and is used as payment per validation.

Purpose / underlying value = Network Token / Network Value Token. The platform can be used online (human interface) and will be expanded with a number of apps, white label widgets and SOAP and REST APIs, to form the ultimate safe bridge for validating and verifying with most common modern software (using web services and system interfaces).

Utility / Legal status = Usage Token / Utility Token The V-ID blockchain is anchored in both the Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchain. A third blockchain is expected but is not yet scheduled. The token price must be high enough to cover the operational costs of V-ID, including Ethereum and Bitcoin transaction fees.

Utility and scarcity

  1. B2B V-ID tokens are at the heart of the validation process. To validate files, a publishing party pays with V-ID tokens. The transactions are key to the identification and confirmation of the publishing party.
  2. B2C After first establishing a client base of medium to large businesses, the V-ID Platform will be further developed to facilitate consumer-oriented services. These services will open up an additional market of consumers, who will use V-ID tokens for a range of applications around online identification, rights management, and file validation.
  3. Loyalty To validate a file, a V-ID token is transferred from the wallet of the publishing party to the V-ID Validation Wallet. V-ID token holders, who sign up for V-ID’s H-Program and hold at least 100K V-ID for 3 months, are eligible to receive a Quarterly Bonus of V-ID tokens after this period.

Development Roundup - atomic swap progress, Metamask style UX swapper started development, dev blog series coming soon

After a successful Mainnet Beta deployment we are back on the regular development schedule with regular Development Roundup summaries along with our more extensive R&D updates and soon to begin developer blog series.

The goal being to give further insight and spotlight our development processes whilst we also expand community outreach (in other areas that may not be so developer focused). Latest updates are as follows:

  • Putting the final touches on the first version of the RenEx Swapper which allows cross-chain atomic swaps for the trading of Bitcoin to Ether on RenEx. Look out for the addition to RenEx soon along with guides!
  • Development has begun on a stand-alone atomic swapper that can be used with any Hashed Time Locked Contract (HTLC) token, usable by any exchange. This will enable Republic Protocol exchanges to support any token on any blockchain. This work will pave the way for a new standard of atomic swaps that should be easily integrate-able for the entire ecosystem and help increase the adoption of the technology.
  • Development on a Chrome plugin for a simpler, faster, and more secure atomic swapping user experience has begun. The goal is to create a tool similar to Metamask - a universal tool with the purpose of being used for atomic swaps.
  • Bug fixes and stability improvements for the RenEx website were pushed.

In the meantime we have continued to test stability of the beta with great results among some expected inevitable bug fixes that comes with a Beta product.

Our commitment continues to be prioritization of improvements which will have meaningful impact on the platforms ability to accrue liquidity. Stay tuned for further updates and more details on these and other exciting developments!

Qtum GitHub Development Guide

(translated from original on WeChat https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/ArCd9K8RwVm4g6LKQqAhlQ)

This article will serve as a quick start guide for Qtum developers to develop projects that use Qtum on GitHub.

What is Qtum?

The official developer described Qtum as a decentralized blockchain project that supports smart contracts based on the UTXO model integrated into Qtum's unique Account Abstraction Layer.

Qtum Developer

No matter what product or technical tool you want to develop with Qtum's technical tools, you'll find development tools that will help you get the most out of it. This article will guide you through the basic setup, including setting up a local Qtum network, and will give you a number of tool features, such as showing how to connect to the test network for more detailed testing, how to connect to the main network when preparing for deployment, with QRC20 tokens for example, using a smart contract to issue tokens.

For Qtum developers, the most useful part is how to use the Qtum JS library to manipulate the parts of the smart contract, and even more cool is to use React to create a simple DAPP part.

Read through the entire guide for development in the Qtum environment. http://book.qtum.site/en/

I believe that after using Qtum's series of tools, you will be more interested in exploring Qtum's content and projects for developers. Let's take a look at some of the key GitHub projects that Qtum offers.

Qtum GitHub Developer Project

The following Qtum development tools are very useful for the development of any Qtum DAPP or Qtum-related projects.

Qtum Boilerplate Project

An introductory project created by Qtum developers to help you get started creating DAPPs on Qtum. Follow the code repository instructions to gain insight into many aspects of Qtum and what it means to create a Qtum DAPP. https://github.com/qtumproject/dApp-boilerplate

Qtum Docker

For developers involved in Qtum development, the Qtum docker project is very important. The Qtum team created a docker image so that all developers can run the Qtum network locally, and any operating system is available from the docker hub.

So, if you have already downloaded docker, congratulations, you are already advanced. (If you need help setting up your Qtum regtest environment, you can see the instructions in the connection guide, which explains in detail how to set up the environment: https://steemit.com/qtum/@cryptominder/qtum-blockchain-development-environment-setup)

regtest is easy to use and provides a better understanding of how Qtum works, and whether it's a smart contract or DAPP, it's a key tool for testing projects. https://github.com/qtumproject/qtum-docker

Qmix

Developed as a Qtum version of Ethereum’s remix, Qmix is a browser-based IDE that lets you write the right smart contracts.

Not only can you write contracts and ensure correctness, but you can also deploy and interact directly with the Qmix UI. In order to be able to deploy and interact with smart contracts, you need to connect to the Qtum network. Click on the application's help options to find instructions on how to connect your Qmix to your local regtest network. Once connected, you can thoroughly test smart contracts before actually deploying to the main network. If you plan to develop Qtum DAPPs, you will most likely need to be familiar with this tool.

Qmix was developed as a Qtum contract, so the GitHub repository for this project is not on Qtum's GitHub, but here: https://github.com/spacemanholdings/QMix

Qtum JS

Qtum JS is a JavaScript library specifically developed for Qtum Smart Contracts that is very useful for DAPP development. Use this tool to build an application and interact with a smart contract, or you can interact directly with Qtum RPC using a framework you like (such as react or angular). Find all the operations that use the Qtum JS library in the documentation. https://qtumproject.github.io/qtumjs-doc/?javascript#qtumrpc

Qtum JS Wallet

Similar to Qtum JS, this is a simplified library that helps you build a lean wallet. It extracts from another Qtum project and uses the Qtum explorer API to get information about the Qtum blockchain. It's a simple yet powerful library that meets all your needs for your wallet. https://github.com/qtumproject/qtumjs-wallet

Qtum API

The Qtum API is another very useful tool that you might use in any application. Use the API to get information from the Qtum network that your project might need. On the GitHub page, you can see a complete list of all API calls and the responses they return. For example, Qtum explorer uses this tool and can also use it as a sample project. https://github.com/qtumproject/insight-api

Qtum project under development

If you are interested in participating in the ongoing Qtum project, do your best to learn more. If you find any problems, you can submit a GitHub issue, and look forward to discovering and resolving and providing pull requests, which will help us grow with Qtum.

Other Qtum projects worth studying

Qtum Electrum Lightweight Qtum Wallet. https://github.com/qtumproject/qtum-electrum

Qtum Enterprise (QtumX) is currently under development and is Qtum's enterprise environment, so group companies can run their own alliance chains. https://github.com/qtumproject/qtum-enterprise

Qtum Explorer This is the explorer's GitHub repository discussed earlier in this article. https://github.com/qtumproject/qtum-explorer

Qtum Solar is a prototype project that Qtum is working on to deploy smart contracts. https://github.com/qtumproject/solar

The Qtum x86 team is about to launch exciting new features. The project is a virtual machine that emulates an x86 processor, thus allowing users to write and compile smart contracts on popular programming languages, rather than being limited to Solidity. https://github.com/qtumproject/x86lib

2018-10 Makuhari goods pickup service

Hello all.

Together with some of my Japanese friends we are once again going to offer a goods pickup service as I have done in the past for other Japanese shows.

Unfortunately, some of my friends have offered to pick up goods for people in the past only for the person to decide they didn't want it after it was already purchased. Given that history if anyone wants something picked up I'm going to ask an advance deposit be made as a sign of good faith.

If it turns out for some reason we are unable to obtain the item in question the deposit would be returned in full.

However, if we do buy the item requested and the buyer decides they do not want the item the deposit will be considered forfeit and not refunded.

The deposit we are going to ask is 50% of the item base cost upfront. As an example, we are asking $50 for shirts. You would send me a $25 deposit in advance and then when I return the the US the first week of November I would contact you with the cost of shipping and you would send the remaining $25 plus the shipping amount.

The deposit shows you have a definite commitment to pay for the item. We don't want to buy hundreds of dollars of goods and then people decide they don't want it.

With the current exchange rate we are asking the following amounts. If for some reason the exchange rate were to radically get worse prices would increase but that seems unlikely.

  • items 1-4, 8 & 12: $50 each + shipping
  • item 5: $90 + shipping
  • item 6: $105 + shipping
  • items 7 & 13: $42.50 each + shipping
  • item 9: $13 + shipping
  • item 10: $20 + shipping
  • item 11: $95 + shipping

The hoodies and some of the other items are going to be rather bulky I think and will use a lot of luggage space thus the higher markup price. The same holds true for the ruck sack #11. I have no idea how large or bulky that thing is going to be so we're asking a bit more for it due to potential hassles.

Additionally I may need to pay for a second piece of checked luggage to bring everything back so part of the markup will go towards that. There is also the need to wake up at 6am to go to the venue, stand in the merch line for 4-5 hours, buy the items and then haul everything back. If you think the prices are too high that's okay but understand there's a non trivial amount of effort that goes into getting everything.

It is entirely possible some of these items may show up on asmart after the concerts but sizes may be limited as well as quantities. Plus with asmart you have to fight everyone else trying to buy and the server possibly crashing. If they do show up on asmart it'll also probably be at a less than ideal time for many people.

Unfortunately due to logistics I can only handle shipping to addresses in the US. I will be using USPS flat rate shipping unless another shipping method is explicitly requested. In the event you want multiple items naturally I will combine the shipping to save some money.

If you are interested please reply with what items you would like, what size if applicable and if asking for multiple items please make a a prioritized list.

In the event too many people request a particular item I will do my best to allocate items so that everyone gets at least one item from as high on their priority list as possible.

If you are worried about such a seemingly large deposit amount you can look through my post history. I have helped out a lot of people with goods in my time on this Reddit.

I always make an effort to be fair and we are simply asking for the deposit since we may be spending a large amount of our own money upfront to buy goods. The deposits will provide us with confidence that we won't get left with a bunch of unwanted goods.

Payment options that I'll be able to accept

  • Chase Pay / Zelle
  • Bitcoin / Ethereum
  • PayPal (as a last option. i really dislike PayPal so if you can use one of the other two that'd be great)

Do we know what a blockchain is?

https://i.redd.it/g3tix27evks11.jpg

Blockchain, understanding it, is not that difficult since this concept is increasingly used. We will try to guide you, to explain what it is, how it works and what is the revolution that the chain of blocks poses.

It is a paradigm shift in our understanding of the digital world. A gigantic account book in which records (blocks) are linked and encrypted to protect the security and privacy of transactions. A distributed and secure database (thanks to encryption) that can be applied to all types of transactions that do not necessarily have to be financial.
This account book is not only distributed and is secure: the blocks are linked and have a hash pointer (encoded) that links them to the previous block, they also have a time stamp and the specific data of the transaction and also that information is public. What does that mean? It means that the chain of blocks, although it protects the privacy of its users, it does allow to control the traceability of those transactions, or what is the same: it allows to know the whole path that for example a Bitcoin has followed since it´s inception up to the wallet that belongs to someone. The design of the blockchain itself has clear advantages, and for example it confirms that each unit of value (for example, each Bitcoin) has only been created once, which avoids the traditional problem with the double spending of digital currencies or with false money, which reduces the confidence of users in that currency and also in the circulation of it.

The blockchain, as its name suggests, is a chain of blocks. Each of these blocks contains the encoded information of a transaction in the network. Before, we used the analogy of the accounting book, where we noted, for example, that A went out and B entered. Well, blockchain behaves the same way, but it will be the network of distributed nodes who have to certify that these data are true. How do they do it? Each block of the chain carries the package of transactions and two codes, one that indicates which is the block that precedes it (except the source block, of course), and another for the block that follows it, that is, they are interlinked or chained so they are called hash codes or pointers. Now comes into play the concept of mining performed by the nodes, that is, the process of validating information. In this process of mining or checking, when there are two blocks that point to the same previous block, it simply wins the first one to be decrypted by most of the nodes, that is, that most points in the network must agree to validate information. Therefore, although blockchain generates multiple blockchains, the longest chain of blocks will always be legitimized.

Decentralization: This is the main feature of the Blockchain. It´s where the chain of blocks comes in, which basically eliminates intermediaries, decentralizing all management. The control of the process belongs to the users, not the banks or a Central Institution, no one has control of the blockchain or the account book, it is controlled by all the users. This example can be extrapolated to other types of transactions, and it is they who basically become part of a huge bank with thousands, millions of "nodes".
All this becomes a tremendous novelty, this transfer does not require a centralized intermediary that identifies and certifies the information, but it is distributed in multiple independent nodes that register and validate it without the need for trust between them. Once entered, the information can not be deleted, only new records can be added, and will not be legitimized unless most of them agree to do so. Even if the network were to fall, with only one of those computers or nodes not doing so, the information would never be lost or the service, depending on the case we are talking about, would still work. Hence the importance of Decentralization.

The original post's content was as follows:

In this week's installment, please share a random thought or question that's been on your mind about Bitcoin Cash.

For me, I was pretty invigorated seeing all the excitement around building things on top of BCH at the BCH Devcon hackathon in San Francisco. We saw some great interviews coming out of the event, like this one with Ryan Charles.

Also, in addition to Merchant Monday (thanks /u/NeonWasteland!) and Tipping Tuesday (which only happens whenever someone bothers to start the thread), I've been mulling over having a "spending saturday" or something like that where people share something they paid for with BCH that week. I try to use BCH for as many things as possible, but my favorite from the past week was dinner at Korean Spring BBQ in Santa Clara, CA. The owner of the business said he gets (by far) more customers paying with BCH than with any other currency he accepts (ETH and BTC).

BTC is not the competition: Dash & Litecoin are.

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a project to fulfil Satoshi's dream of creating a hugely popular, permissionless, trust-less, programmable, digital cash system and sound money.

Bitcoin Core (BTC) is not our competition. The Lightning Network is a terrible design that will not be able to compete with Bitcoin Cash. I'm not making this post to debate that. I've seen the facts and made up my mind. Liquid has more in common with Paypal than with Bitcoin. The BTC base layer is constrained and intermittently yields very high fees. Bitcoin Core will die on its own. It's a short term burden that we must deal with. However...

We should not let the BTC behemoth distract us from the real competition.

Which other coins are getting accepted as cash like Bitcoin Cash is?

Primarily it's Dash & Litecon. oops, typo!

  • Check out all these Dash merchants.
  • Notice how many places that accept BTC & BCH also accept Litecoin. For example: this was posted today.
  • Many of the easy to use cryptocurrency on-ramps accept Litecoin. Example: Coinbase.

Despite Litecoin's higher market cap, I think Dash is more of a threat than Litecoin. Dash has a big, passionate... and slightly crazy (no offence intended Dash guys... you are though) community. Dash has easy to use privacy features built into some of their wallet software. Dash has a fair bit of merchant acceptance. Dash has an Instant Send feature that allows for relatively secure zero-conf payments. The Dash culture is uber focused on ease of use. We can do better on all fronts, however: we really have to do better.

I have personally assessed that Litecoin and Dash are inferior to Bitcoin Cash. However, this does not mean that they are not competition and they will not slow the growth of Bitcoin Cash. We must focus on making sure that Bitcoin Cash is better than them in every way possible. Bitcoin Cash needs to be:

  • easier to use
  • easier to obtain
  • easier to spend
  • more widely accepted
  • more private and fungible.
  • more secure
  • less stressful & more certain (~coughs~ ABC ~coughs~ SV. FFS guys! Please listen to BU)
  • BCH needs to be better in every way.

Some final comments on other cryptos:

  • Monero: I'm a big fan of Monero, but I consider it to serve a different function to BCH. Monero currently has low acceptance, is harder to use than BCH and has considerably higher fees making it impractical for very small payments. You wouldn't pay for a chocolate bar at a store with Monero with typical fees. Monero may overlap more with Bitcoin Cash in the future. For now, Monero is the best privacy focused, medium to high value transfer & storage system for smart people. It's a niche within a niche.
  • Ethereum: intermittent high fees. Lower acceptance than Dash & Litecoin (I think). The focus is on DAPPs not cash.
  • EOS: low fee, DAPP system. Check their subreddit and you'll find they have some quite big usability hurdles. It's not a short term threat.
  • ZCash, Nano and Decred are all trying to build cash systems. They are currently of little threat due to their lack of adoption, but they are all worth keeping an eye on.
  • Bitcoin Gold... how is this thing so highly valued and why is it still around? It's not a threat; it is an anomaly. It's like an old, 3 legged, blind & wheezing dog that the family thought wouldn't make it to Christmas, but it survived 5 more.
