How Leverage Can Help With Bitcoin’s Price Discovery

Article by Coindesk: Sebastian Sinclair

Bitcoin (BTC) is like any other asset class in that it captures value through organic price discovery conducted via trading activity on global exchanges.

Yet leverage and margin trading, in general, can help “turbo-charge” demand for an asset. They can also free up capital, thus increasing liquidity within a given market as traders look to use their capital elsewhere.

It’s an investment strategy of using borrowed money for the use of various financial tools to increase the potential return of an investment.

It’s also an efficient use of trading capital, valued by professionals because it allows them to trade large positions without committing 100 percent of their capital to a risky spot position.

For example, a trader that wanted to buy a thousand tokens at $1 apiece would only require a $100 of trading capital, depending on the leverage used, thereby leaving the remaining $900 available for additional trades.

Why leverage matters for bitcoin

Often touted as the most liquid cryptocurrency asset available, BTC benefits from leverage and margin trading activity by allowing investors and traders to lock in a position while maintaining a portfolio of other cryptos. It also provides professionals and retail investors with additional tools to capture value in the crypto market. In effect, greater demand on the asset class vastly improves the potential for more accurate value capture through organic price discovery.

Participating in a live panel discussion at Invest: ASIA in Singapore, Lennix Lai, financial market director at OKEx told Coindesk:

“If you can only buy or sell particular underlying tokens of bitcoin and you don’t have the capability to short, basically speculate in another direction, then the market would be a lot more volatile because it would be entirely driven by sentiment.”

“For example, you can view bitcoin as being much more volatile before CME Futures were introduced … so we should have more financial instruments like options to assist further in the price discovery process in relation to volatility,” he said.

Greater access to capital means greater liquidity, without actually increasing the number of traders in a given market. It provides a means for increasing capital inflow without attracting any new money.

And while the total market capitalization of the crypto market has been on the slide alongside declining total volume, the pressures from a bear market can be offset through leverage and margin trading.

What’s the risk?

Of course, the rewards don’t come without inherent risks, as a loss can lead to the liquidation of a trader’s capital and force spot prices lower. Such an event recently took place in BTC’s futures market on Sept. 24 triggering a “long squeeze“.

If the cryptocurrency underlying a trade moves in the opposite direction to what was expected, leverage can greatly amplify the potential losses. To manage the risk associated, traders usually implement a strict trading style that includes the use of stop orders and limit orders designed to curb potential losses.

Also speaking on the panel in Singapore, Sunny Ray, head of global business development at the Kraken crypto exchange, explained how exchanges protect themselves from that risk:

“If there’s a lot of volatility in the market, if the value of the asset drops below 20 or 30 percent, there is something called a margin call that takes place where a company will actually liquidate the customer’s assets to cover some of those losses.”

There are currently eight major exchanges that offer the ability to leverage crypto, with several others offering margin trading accounts such as Kraken, Binance and Deribitm, while Bakkt’s release of its futures product on Sept. 23 adds to the opportunities for more authentic price discoveries.

Facebook's Libra: Potential To Increase Demand For Bitcoin

img

Facebook recently announced its planned 2020 launch of a cryptocurrency it calls Libra. This is perhaps one of the single largest events in cryptocurrency history. Why? Because Facebook has the power and presence to massively disrupt a still-growing industry. This could single-handedly usher in a new wave of users and adoption. It has the resources and technical capabilities to build a truly scalable and functional blockchain ecosystem, the management experience to launch a new and nascent technology, and the clout to bring on the necessary partners to enable usage out of the gate.

In this article, I'll explore how the future launch of Libra may have a positive impact on bitcoin demand. But first, let’s dive into the new cryptocurrency a bit.

Background

Libra belongs to a family of cryptocurrencies called "stable coins" and is backed 1:1 against a basket of stabilized assets (more on that later). It is also fast: Though no estimates are given for settlement times, Facebook is imposing strict throughput, financial reliability and security requirements for validator nodes.

Due to its permissioned blockchain structure (albeit at the expense of significant distribution and decentralization), it is expected to be capable of supporting 1,000 transaction per second (TPS). Compare that to seven TPS for Bitcoin and 20 TPS for Ethereum, and you can quickly see just how scalable Libra is designed to be.

Most current stable coins are pegged to a single fiat asset, such as USD. Libra is not pegged to a single fiat asset but instead is "backed by a collection of low-volatility assets, such as bank deposits and short-term government securities...." This is important, as Libra has the potential to be more stable than many local currencies, especially those used in high-conflict regions, a challenging political climate, or with historically high-inflation rates such as the Bolivar.

This method in which Libra is backed gives it intrinsic value. But more importantly, the reliability of price stability can be used for daily purchases of goods and services without the risk of significant price change. This also means that it has functional value as both a method of payment as well a store value for savings. It is also important to note that there’s likely minimal room for speculation on Libra’s future price growth potential. Since it is designed to be stable, it is assumed to not appreciate in value like bitcoin or other speculative cryptocurrencies.

Implications For Bitcoin

Initially, Libra is acquired by end users by exchanging their local fiat for Libra. This can be performed through ATMs placed in local markets, participating merchants or through Facebook’s Calibra Wallet. From there, Libra can be transferred to vendors or merchants to pay for goods and services, or to friends and family as a form of remittance. Most importantly, Libra is designed to support an open ecosystem, such that it can be transferred to and supported by "a competitive network of exchanges," where users can exchange it for bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Libra also supports several hallmark benefits of blockchain technology, such as the ability to create wallets and send/receive it without supplying any personally identifiable information.

img

Libra’s vision is to provide a fast and low-cost method of value transfer to the unbanked or to those who traditionally pay more for financial services as a result of having less money. In order to do this, it will need to create a vast network of fiat-to-Libra onramps so that it can convert locally used fiat in the many countries it plans to operate in, to Libra. At the moment, this process is exclusively being handled by cryptocurrency exchanges, and the options, while growing, are still limited.

However, as Facebook and the emerging collective of well-capitalized businesses in the Libra Association continue to push for usage and adoption, a new wave of previously untapped consumer capital is expected to make its way into the cryptocurrency markets. Even if just a fraction of Libra holders exchange it for bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, there is significant potential for new demand, as Libra is expected to gain adoption from an entirely new base of users. Think of it as a "gateway cryptocurrency" that will help familiarize a new population of users with digital currencies such as bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Challenges

Facebook has taken on the monumental effort of building an initial consortium of founding members, including payments heavyweights Stripe, PayPal, Mastercard and Visa. However, to date, no single bank has signed on. Critical to Libra’s adoption is a vast and diverse fiat-to-Libra onramp. Banks have their part in this, as all cryptocurrencies must initially be purchased in fiat. While a specific association with Libra is not necessary to accomplish this, cooperation and support by banking entities are absolutely critical.

Beyond this, there are markets where banks are few-and-far-between or otherwise difficult to access by low-income households. In these markets, it may be exceptionally difficult to convert an individual’s cash-based wages to the digital representation of value that is Libra. This is a problem that has existed for decades and is not new and unique to Libra. However, it has yet to be solved at scale and presents a very real challenge. Still, it seems that the Libra Association is the single most powerful and influential consortium of companies that has been challenged with the task of solving this, and as a result, this author is hopeful.

Component-Based Magic System Summary, would like tips and feedback

In a certain kingdom, there is a secret, large library underneath the king's castle that holds thousands of books where each is written about different properties of the natural world. In the center of the library is a large blue crystal from space that acts as a beacon between these books to the spell users all around the world. A skilled scholar, or a person with the know-hows, can write their own spells that can take on the functionalities of the books and other established spells (similar to programming and component-based development). To use these spells, one must pay for their execution as well as the creators of the spells, there have been a number of mediums developed for this over the years, such as exchanging the electricity from the action potential of neurons and a man-made substance (similar to Bitcoin) specifically for such exchanges. As long as the beacon in the library or the connections to the books are not severed, spells worldwide will work successfully.

Allow me to demonstrate with an example: A user would like to cast a flamethrower spell for construction work, forest clearing, or combat. They would need to put in a request to the beacon to "borrow" the needed information from the books in the library. The request is put through an two things; a slip of paper of code to call the beacon and a channeling item like a staff, amulet, or more normally, a bracelet. That request will communicate with the beacon, which will sort out its needs. We know that a flamethrower needs heat, fuel, and oxygen. 3 books throughout the library will be sought for the information, if any of these books require information for the ingredients of either heat, fuel, or oxygen, they'd look for information (like fuel, which implies wood, coal, or gasoline) from other books. Of course, things also needed are geometry, gravity from physics, atmospheric pressure, maximum temperature limit, collision events, streaming speed, etc. This entire information retrieval process is recursive. The more complex the request was, the more complex the spell would be, the more expensive it will be, and the more milliseconds it will take to cast. Once all information is retrieved, it is sent back to the user via the beacon and causes artificial isomerization in the space around the user. That space is fed the fetched information, which by then has been converted into molecular instructions, you can think of this as programming molecules to perform complex actions. The molecules will shift and finally create an instance of heat, fuel, and oxygen with the property of a flamethrower. The user will then use that instance however they want, and will be billed based on how much resources they take from the library.

Another user can create another spell built on the flamethrower spell above, taking advantage of its contents. This new spell will feature 3 streams of fire instead of one, and they will all be blue. In this case, the blue color and the positioning of the 2 other streams must be coded by the user, as it doesn't exist in the original spell, which makes this spell take up more resources from the library and thus becoming more expensive.

I would like to hear about any tips or feedback about how I can improve my idea, or my presentation of it, and I also have a few questions if that's ok.

  1. Inside the blue crystal, is a black hole whose rotational property increases energy potential at the loss of mass; I made this as one of the reasons why the crystal works as a beacon. Other reasons include the programming of the molecules of the crystal itself. How plausible is this idea, scientifically?
  2. A computer's performance and functionality is bounded by its power supply, processing power, its screen as a primary interface to interact with humans, and its RAM. What other constraints can I add to my system?
  3. I've been thinking that as the number of users increase, the blue crystal that serves as a central point will become a bottleneck. I'd think that in time, the moderators of the system will perform the decentralization of spell execution, in which there are artificially-created crystals in their own libraries will lighten the load of the original crystal. But this might make some spells, even the cheapest ones, more expensive due to books being in different libraries, costing both time and more computation due to the increased distance. Having all books contain as much information as possible isn't ideal, but having all books contain as little information as possible isn't either. How can I improve this decentralized architecture?

Full NordVPN Reddit Review

I have been using NordVPN on 3 of my devices for just over a year now and here is my NordVPN Reddit Review. Please comment your thoughts below!

My Favourite Features:

Fully Anonymous - I paid for my subscription using bitcoin so there was no way to trace it back to me. They also claim to have a no-logs policy so there really is no way for anyone to trace anything I do online.

Security - I use their double encryption so all my traffic is sent through the VPN twice making it pretty much impossible for anyone to decrypt. I'm not aware of any other VPNs that currently offer this feature, but I ALWAYS have this turned on when torrenting. They also have a kill switch which has kicked in for me a few times. It stops you from downloading torrents in the event that the VPN drops out.

Simplicity - The app is super simple to use, especially the mobile versions. My iPad is always connected without even having to open the app. I love the fact that I can have it installed on all my devices for the one price.

Price - They normally run discounts on their 3 year plan which is really cheap. I think for the moment they are one of the cheapest and as mentioned above they allow you to use multiple devices at no extra charge.

Worst Parts:

Speed - Most of the time the speed is great. But since I have the VPN pretty much always on I have noticed drops in speed sometimes. It’s not normally an issue because if I change the location that fixes the problem, but I wish I never had to do it in the first place.

Connectivity - I would say that for me I get a drop out at least once a month. I wish it never happens but it does. This is why it's so important that they have a killswitch to prevent my torrents from downloading while the VPN is reconnecting.

Bonuses:

Access to US Netflix - I travel a lot and when Im travelling outside the US my netflix changes and shows me less US shows and more shows local to the area. This often cuts out shows like House of Cards. But when I set my VPN to Washington DC I get all my shows back. You can also use this feature to access netflix shows from any country. Before using NordVPN I tried a few others and netflix detected the VPNs and wouldn't let me watch anything. NordVPN is the only one that has worked for this feature for me.

Cheaper flights - A friend of mine actually introduced me to this feature. I never knew that airline companies change their prices depending on which country you are booking from. All you need to do is set you country to somewhere in South America or Eastern Europe before opening a flight website and it will normally provide you with lower prices. You can still use your USD card to pay, and Google Chrome to translate the website back into english.

Conclusion:

While I dont think that NordVPN is perfect, I really do think they are one of the best VPN providers out at the moment. They have great encryption and decent speed. Even if they are not the best VPN they are definitely the best value overall.

Overall Rating: 4.5 / 5 Great Value

That’s my full NordVPN reddit review, would love to hear what everyone else thinks about NordVPN. I remember reading a lot of conflicting NordVPN reviews when I first signed up so I hope this one helps.

If you want to try it out they do have a 30 day money back guarantee. I did not personally test getting a refund this but I have heard that they honor it.

The lowest price I could find online at the time of writing this review was 70% off here:

Blockchain innovation

Who was the first to create the concept of the Blockchain?

Many would say "Satoshi Nakamoto" and be mistaken. Strange it may seem, but the concept of the blockchain was invented long before Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin as A Peer to Peer Electronic Cash System.

Let's have a look at the events preceding Bitcoin's blockchain appearance.

After trading to a new monthly low at $7,670, bitcoin started an upside correction against the US Dollar. The BTC/USD pair broke the $8,000 resistance level to start the recent recovery. Moreover, there was a close above the $8,000 level and the 100 hourly simple moving average. As a result, the price climbed above the $8,150 and $8,200 resistance levels.

More importantly, yesterday’s highlighted major bearish trend line was breached with resistance near $8,080 on the hourly chart of the BTC/USD pair. The pair gained strength above $8,300 and surpassed $8,400. It even spiked above the $8,500 level and traded to a new weekly high at $8,525. At the moment, it seems like the price is facing resistance near the $8,500 level.

It might correct lower towards the $8,350 or $8,320 support. Moreover, the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the recent wave from the $7,670 low to $8,525 high is near $8,323 to provide support. If the price fails to stay above $8,300, it could correct lower towards the key $8,050 and $8,000 support levels. Besides, the 50% Fib retracement level of the recent wave from the $7,670 low to $8,525 high could provide support near $8,100.

Dr. Craig Wright explains the Japanese influence on Bitcoin

Article by Coingeek: Noah Bradley

Oscar Wilde once wrote, “History is merely gossip.” In many ways, this is correct, as historical accounts of what has transpired are often the stories as prepared through the writer’s eye and are, in some cases much more subjective than objective. Many “truths” about history have already been proven to be completely false and based on certain beliefs at the time.

Satoshi Nakamoto wrote about the truths and misconceptions attributable to writings on what has transpired before, emphasizing how Bitcoin can make it virtually impossible to relay anything but the actual facts of what is actually happening. Dr. Craig Wright discusses Satoshi’s writings in a new blog post and reiterates the Bitcoin founder’s ability to envision the future and see what would be needed to make the world a better place.

Satoshi was a studier of the Tokugawa form of government, which is a ruling system that relied on decentralization to prevail. Compared to Tokugawa, oppressive government systems prevent popular intellectual innovation and societal development. Tokugawa was also at the heart of some of the most massive growth and expansion periods in history.

Wright explains, based on Satoshi’s foresight, “Nakamoto delivered the thesis that true history was altered time and time again by those seeking to constitute what they saw was pure origin based on their own philosophy. The reconstruction through a series of overlays and changes leads to something radically different. The only stable part of history that Nakamoto noted was one of self-promotion and bragging.”

This can be proven through verifiable sources, including religious material that has been shown to change based on the writer’s perspective. Any time change is allowed but isn’t allowed to be audited, someone is going to exploit that vulnerability to further his or her own agenda.

Wright adds that he is attempting to bring order to more than just currency through crypto. He explains, “Bitcoin is a system that creates an ordered and structured history, one where changes can occur; but within the system, if exchange occurs, the nature of the change is recorded. In Bitcoin, we have the answer to Nakamoto’s history and his dilemma and problem.”

The blockchain allows for a completely immutable record of events, whether it be the creation of a contract, a month-long symposium on world hunger or the amount of money politicians receive through contributions. Storing data on the blockchain makes it impossible for anyone to appear later and try to alter the events or assert that what transpired didn’t take place — it’s all there and can easily be verified at any time.
