The top red flags to check out before making a cryptocurrency investment

Cryptocurrency investments and digital assets are gaining attraction of investors across the board as they offer an alternative to traditional assets. However, in the past two years, investors in the digital asset market have witnessed the most volatile period in the last decade as prices of most coins and tokens shot up over 1000% since launch. The hike in price is still in effect today, totally oblivious, to the longest bear run Bitcoin (BTC) has had in history.

However, the field has not been all rosy. During the massive bull run of 2017, the industry was filled with ICO scams and exit scams which saw many investors lose their investments. Notwithstanding, the number of hacks on cryptocurrency exchanges was on a high as investors lost close to a billion dollars to hackers. Such unfortunate events are pushing potential investors and governments from the field.

Below are some of the red flags that new and existing investors should look out for before making a cryptocurrency investment.

Target market and Hype

1. FOMO and Multi-level marketing schemes

“Bill Gates is buying coin X” “Gain 100% in less than 24 hours”

The advertisements of most cryptocurrency scams offer false promises to the investor the however that promise to investors is usually not delivered.  Beware of exchanges and other cryptocurrency investments that also ask you to deposit some cryptocurrency in their wallets and gain crazy interest on your investment.

This points to a multilevel marketing scheme where the earliest entrants gain hugely and the rest of the members down the pyramid lose out.

2. “The wolf of Wall Street”

Those familiar with the movie, “The wolf of wall street” understand the analogy of pump and dump schemes. This is a scheme to which certain parties buy in a useless asset and fame it to attract more buyers. Once the price hits the peak, the big early buyers sell off the cryptocurrency leading to a huge crash on the coin and large loses to unsuspecting buyers. These coins are usually pushed with catchy but fake quotes on the platform as shown above.

3. General market cases

The market is filled with duplicated projects offering a bright future or revolutionary ideas to the global economy. Blockchain is being used as the solution to everything and while I agree the application scaling is important, having a coin for everything is not ideal. People do not want to use a new coin to buy bread, another to pay for a haircut, or pay for subscription. Eliminating the cryptocurrencies that offer similar use cases to what we have in Bitcoin and other better technologies should be key before making your investment.

Initial Coin Offering

4. Team

A simple rules applies when it comes to making a statement on legitimacy of any project – leadership of the project. The team shows the seriousness of the project and the ability to carry the development of the project towards its goals. A lack of a solid team, no advisory or few advisors, no industrial diversity in the team and an anonymous team are all indicators of a failing project.

5. Allocation to team

Team members are supposed to work on the project’s development and for this they require compensation. However, a common trend for scams in the industry is allocating unreasonable amounts to the team.

Having less than 10% is a favorable amount to the team. These projects allocates in excess of 30% share of the total supply which shows greed on part of the team members.

6. No Vesting period

A lack of holding period once the initial token offering is complete may lead to a selloff before even development of the project takes off. A lack of the vesting period, which ranges from weeks to months, shows venerability of the token. However there are exceptions to the rule but to be on the safer side you will need to check the credibility of the project.

Technical outlay of the cryptocurrency

7. Repositories

One of the key indicators of a legitimate public cryptocurrency project is a public repository with active commits on GitHub or GitLab. This shows that there exists a number of engineers working on the project. Furthermore, given that most of the cryptocurrencies are fueled by the vision and goals of the development team, working repositories should be a key factor to look at before investing in cryptocurrencies. This especially affects the long term investors.

8. Funding

One of the key steps to further development of the project is funding bar some exceptions such as Bitcoin. However, with the rise of tokenization, most of the developers require venture capital funding to keep developing the project. If the project runs dry, as witnessed throughout 2018, developers are bound to flee leaving the company at a disadvantage.

9. Whitepaper

One key issue that novice investors leave out when selecting a crypto investment is the whitepaper. Well, it is understandable due to difficulty to understand the technical terms used in whitepapers – even business whitepapers. All the same, there exists projects that lack the whitepaper altogether or have a directly copy pasted whitepaper from another website. Beware of such cryptocurrencies as they are likely to be scam projects.

10. Other scams

The list above is in no way exhaustive of the risks involved in cryptocurrency investment. Other risks include mistakes on the website or whitepaper, listed on no or little exchanges, ability to print more cryptocurrency in the future without community approval etc.

Edmonton Bitcoin Beginner Meetup :: 12th March 6:30pm - 7:30pm

Edmonton Bitcoin Association presents its monthly Bitcoin Beginner Meetup. 6:30pm - 7:30pm @ Bitcoin Solutions 10142 Whyte Ave.

This is an event that covers the very basics of the technology, with a goal to raise awareness of what it can and cannot do, debunk the myths of the blockchain buzzword and answer any questions in a group discussion.

It is NOT a meetup to sell cryptocurrencies or provide investment advice, more it is to provide our community with knowledge of the positive and negative possibilities of Bitcoin in plain language, thus help create more informed individuals about the technology. This includes sharing information about known scams and potential scenarios in which anyone might find themselves a victim of.

Maintaining 2 websites for a beginner. Is it worth it?

Hey, guys,

I’m just dipping my toes in affiliate marketing. My interests are music (studio equipment, instruments, software) and cryptology (encryption, ciphers, cryptocurrencies). I’ve recently watched LazyAssStoner’s latest guide, where he gives an example of a site dedicated to numerology. I’ve did as he showed, but created 2 websites: numerologyfeed.com and inplaincrypto.com.

The issue is that while I can write content for the crypto dedicated site, I can’t really force myself into even copywriting something about numerology, as I don’t really dig the concept. At the same time my stats show that people are visiting my numerology website, even when it’s still not published. This shows the demand. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about the crypto site, even though it’s already up (though far from being complete) and has pretty big and fundamental article about Bitcoin, which is 100% original content.

I totally understand that at this point it may be a bit early to judge about the performance of any of these websites, as I have just started last week. I just wanted to have your opinion on whether I should dedicate my efforts to something I don’t like, but it’s easier to promote, or shall I stick to what I like and fight my way through, or both.

Cheers

[uncensored-r/Bitcoin] Did I get scammed?

The following post by itsandress is being replicated because some comments within the post(but not the post itself) have been silently removed.

The original post can be found(in censored form) at this link:

np.reddit.com/r/ Bitcoin/comments/azhb1r

The original post's content was as follows:

So I never really thought about cryptocurrency until this happened.

Some guy on instagram reached out to me and wanted to see if I wanted to invest in bitcoin alongside him. I was really skeptical about this because usually these guys don't reach out to you, you reach out to them. So I started talking with the fellow, and poking around his profile and stuff. He has 12,000 followers, which could just very well be paid bots. He also had testimony videos, that seemed generic and never really mentioned his name. In his profile however, he does show videos of him talking about his mining rigs, and setting up a new facility (in Syria, I think). I asked him for verification but he didn't give it, as it was supposedly used for illegal activity. He also has told me he is based in Georgia (country), and a website linked in his bio does say they have an office in Georgia.

So then I asked him how would I know if he's real? He replied with this: "For you to believe I'm real, I will credit your mining wallet and the money won't be spendable till the server that did the payment receives the crypto you invest automatically it will become spendable. How much do you intend to invest?"

So eventually he sets up a blockchain wallet for me, then I get $500 of bitcoin off coinbase. That same day, I won $500 off a scratch-off ticket, so if I lose that money, it won't be as painful. I was talking with him and later I ask him what the process is, and he says this: "Well the process it's all about mining more coins and trading for you which will generate the profit. Yeah no need for that again since you have bought we will mine, trade, and generate your ROI your wallet has been linked to the mining farm for that." I also keep talking with him and he says the minimum investment amount is $500 for him because it depends on the "miners platform."

Two days pass, and my skepticism is still lingering, so I asked him how he wouldn't walk out with my bitcoin, and blatantly scam. He said this to me: "Okay, I am a man and I know where I have come from, principles and discipline guides us. My word is my bond, I understand how you feel and trust me I did the same thing on my first investment, I was so scared, each palpitation in my heart was engraved with the words you might lose this but I looked around me and told myself I'll make it and today I am happy. I don't do such because I have something way better than that gives me enough money to settle my needs. Once I've mined and traded for you, you will get paid and I will collect my little commission that's how it works; both parties (Investor and the miner) earn after the process. So don't feel and think negative man it will work out."

So then I send him the bitcoin and the value increased since I spoke to him. Eventually, he mined and traded then got back to me, and deposited bitcoin into my blockchain wallet, and he said due to the rise of value in bitcoin, my profit will be higher. I was only supposed to profit about $650, but instead got $4700. Eventually I authorize him to send me the coins to my wallet and I get a whopping 1.762 bitcoins. But it is labeled as "non-spendable" and it is waiting on 3 confirmations. I ask him about it and he says this: "Yeah after confirmation it won't be spendable due to the increase in price of bitcoin it affected the servers so after mining and trading for you, the server credited your wallet with that high amount and for it to be spendable, you will send $2000 btc to the server making it the investment of $2500 and the ROI is what you just received then you will send me the miner's fee of $150 and service charge of $50." So I was confused where $2000 came from, and he said this about it: "the $2000 won't be a new investment it will be the balance of the first one I did that for you to see it's not a scam." Then I talk to him about how I will have $4700 left after sending him the $2200 but he says that I cannot use it because it's non-spendable and it will remain in my wallet. And supposedly I need to buy another crypto and send it to that server, assuming it's the $2200. He then says "Before it will become spendable after confirmation, you will have to balance the invest amount." I ask him what the process is, and he says, "Okay you will have to buy bitcoins of $2200 and send to the server to equal the investment balance and once it's received the whole money in your wallet becomes spendable.

So does what this guy is saying check out? And as I said, the 1.7 bitcoin he sent me is pending confirmation to be spendable (from what I understood on Blockchain's website), but it doesn't make sense to send him more money imo. He also told me to get Luno so I can send my bitcoin to the bank, but he has access to my blockchain wallet, unlike my Luno account, but all log-ins have to be authorized by me for blockchain, so if he tries to get in I can deny it. He told me he would tell me when he would need to log into blockchain. And guys, before you call me a dumbass that's getting scammed, I realize that, but I figured I'd ask the community because maybe it is true. Thanks for the help and sorry for all the reading.

Net Positive or Negative for Bitcoin in Hamas Scenario as PayPal Denies Service to Palestinian Areas - Bitcoin Exchange Guide

https://bitcoinexchangeguide.com/net-positive-or-negative-for-bitcoin-in-hamas-scenario-as-paypal-denies-service-to-palestinian-areas/

Casa Lightning Node Offline

I've properly forwarded both TCP ports 8333 and 9735 to my Casa node. The Bitcoin node is showing both inbound and outbound connections. And under "Lightning" it says both "Active" and "Online".

However, if I click on "Manage Node" under "Lightning", in the pop-up window it says "Connection Status" is "Offline". If I click "Details", I get the message:

There's a Discovery Problem

Your node couldn't automatically make itself visible to the Lightning network. To fix this:

  1. Enable UPnP in your router settings, then restart your node and check your connection visibility again here.

  2. If you still see this error, set up port forwarding using this guide, then click "Continue with port forwarding" below.

Then I click the "Continue with port forwarding" button, and enter my public address and port 9735 as instructed, click "Save and Restart", but after the node restarts, the problem remains.

Is there something else I need to do? Do I actually need to fund a channel to go online? I've emailed the Casa support address, but have gotten no response.

Bitcoin (BTC) Daily Price Forecast – March 11 - Bitcoin Exchange Guide

https://bitcoinexchangeguide.com/bitcoin-btc-daily-price-forecast-march-11/

[Newbie Monday] Week of Monday, March 11, 2019

Welcome to the Newbie Monday Weekly thread at /r/bitcoinmarkets!

This is a weekly thread where you can ask any basic questions related to bitcoin trading without shame or embarrassment.

Some rules:

  • First and foremost, check out the links on the subreddit bar on the right as well as our Wiki for answers to common questions and good reading material on basic guides, strategies and indicators.

  • There are no questions too stupid, as long as they are about what to do and how to do it in bitcoin trading. If you don't like a question being asked - you don't have to answer it.

  • Be respectful, no name-calling.

  • Try to source your answers or support with chart examples, links, etc where possible.

  • This is not a a thread to ask rhetorical questions about the state of bitcoin. "With the halvening coming up, isn't it stupid not to buy every dip?" or "With only 2.7TPS how can bitcoin support a global economy" are better questions for the weekly fundamental thread.
