What Is Bitcoin? Guide for the Most Popular Cryptocurrency

Nasdaq plans to launch Bitcoin futures in the first quarter of 2019, even despite the crypto market fall.

🔊Nasdaq plans to launch Bitcoin futures in the first quarter of 2019, even despite the crypto market fall.

For this reason, the company actively cooperates with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Also, CME and CBOE trading platforms have settled bureaucratic formalities related to futures in an “expedited mode”. At the end of last year, many market participants hoped that the new tools would mark a “new era” and lay the foundation for large-scale institutional investments in cryptocurrency.

However, in reality, everything turned out to be completely different. The volume of trading in bitcoin derivatives is still insignificant, and the price of the underlying asset since the launch of futures fell from $ 20,000 to $ 4,000 and continues to decline.

Nasdaq plans to launch Bitcoin futures in the first quarter of 2019, even despite the crypto market fall.

Anyone know why Bitcoin.com wallet has a minimum send amount?

Is there a way around this? I was hoping to create a guide for on-boarding newbies by having them create a wallet, receive some coins from a faucet, and then spend the coins to a charity. It seems however there is a minimum send amount with the Bitcoin.com wallet, which makes it difficult for small amounts from faucets to actually be useable in a Tx.

Bit2Me DEX, 0x Protocol Decentralized Exchange presented in Google Spain

Hello, we are Bit2Me. Last week we were at the Google Campus Madrid presenting a quick summary of our services.

We had great news to announce. We presented Bit2Me DEX, a decentralized exchange over 0x Protocol with a professional appearance and a great set of advanced functionalities.

Bit2Me is a Spanish company that since 2014 started the exchange of cryptocurrencies in Spain. We now offer service in more than 40 countries.

Bit2Me started by connecting Bitcoin with more than 10000 ATMs of traditional Spanish banks for the first time in history, this had never been done in the world: no need for a credit / debit card or any bank account, with Bit2Me anyone can convert bitcoins to euros in seconds and pick them up instantly at a traditional Spanish ATM. It was something magical and incredible, and even today it still works 4 years later (video about this).

As we mentioned, at Google Campus in Madrid we presented Bit2Me DEX, our bet for decentralized exchanges.

DEX works on 0x Protocol, and has been developed with the aim of having a decentralized professional operation focusing on two main points:

  • Usability
  • Design

In addition to looking for a nice and comfortable design, we also went for usability to be as simple and intuitive as possible.

We want to attract both new traders who are scared by the complexity of some existing exchanges, but also invite experienced traders searching for a more complete platform.

The platform will have the following characteristics:

Bit2Me DEX Screenshot

The decentralized exchange is ready at 90%, we are finishing some details and in the coming weeks we can publish exactly the final date of the launch.

Til then we continue working, a strong greeting from Spain.

Here you have a video of the presentation subtitled in Spanish and English and an album of photos of the event.

CoinFest Nigeria Highlighted Blockchain uses cases beyond simply investing in Crypto | Xendbit

https://xendbit.com/?fbclid=IwAR2FOCOgmCNDNs0D8ayUxp4j3VmM-DqgRJn1rJXyiFVwkbhNoFJih4oKMd4

Crypto-enthusiasts, blockchain entrepreneurs, and investors came together at the “convention of decentralized currency”, CoinFest Nigeria in Abuja to discuss the future of cryptocurrency and the blockchain in Nigeria.

Coinfest is an annual event held in many countries, including Nigeria, with the aim of promoting the use of digital currencies and blockchain technology in a collaborative manner.

Despite the recent drop in the cryptocurrency market and increased regulatory scrutiny for cryptocurrencies, Coinfest NG still experienced a strong turnout with over 150 participants coming from within Nigeria as well as other West African nations.

The event’s keynote speaker, Dr. Andrew S. Nevin, the Chief Economist of PwC noted in his presentation that there is a need for more Africans to see blockchain technology beyond bitcoin, highlighting this as one of the reasons why most African ICOs have failed. In his speech, he made a stunning revelation, “Despite raising billions, 46% of ICOs have failed globally, and the majority of African ICOs have failed. Only SureRemit and a few others were successful. Yet about NGN32 billion worth of bitcoin have been traded in Nigeria.”

In the same vein, Eamon Leonard, Vice President, TimeChain (Canada), spoke on “Building Blockchain Bridges between Canada and Africa.”  He made reference to relevant use cases of Blockchain projects, providing collaborative opportunities between Canada and Africa. https://www.cryptomartez.com/2018/04/coinfest-nigeria-highlighted-blockchain-uses-cases-beyond-simply-investing-crypto.html

Press

There are a few mentions of MeWe in the press, some listed on the company's website, others via web search.

Self-reported articles

The following articles are linked directly from MeWe's Press page:

The page also lists a "Privacy Revolution Required Reading" list of 20 articles all addressing Facebook privacy gaffes in the mainstream press (Wired, TechCrunch, Fortune, Gizmodo, The Guardian, etc.).

There are further self-reported mentions in several of the company's PR releases over the years.

Other mentions

A DuckDuckGo search produces several other press mentions, including:

  • Facebook Alternative MeWe Raises $5.2M, Los Angeles Business Journal (July 7, 2018) "The latest round, as well as MeWe’s total $10 million in fundraising, was predominantly backed by celebrity investors, such as author Marci Shimoff, Rachel Roy, and Lynda Weinman, founder of Lynda.com, which sold to Linkedin in 2015 for $1.5 billion. Jack Canfield, creator of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book series, also invested in MeWe."

  • Full Page "Dear Facebook" Letter In The New York Times from MeWe, the Competitor Mark Zuckerberg Refuses to Name Yahoo Finance/PR Newsire (May 28, 2018) "Facebook competitor MeWe, in its first-ever advertisement on any medium, took a full-page in the New York Times on Sunday, May 27th. MeWe's "Dear Facebook" letter is a direct response to Mark Zuckerberg's letter ad on March 25th, and a response to Zuckerberg's refusal to name a Facebook competitor in front of Congress."

  • Is building a Facebook alternative worth the effort? MeWe thinks so VentureBeat (July 5, 2018) "[T]here are still companies hoping to make their mark in the social networking realm with “Facebook alternatives.” One of those is MeWe, a “next-generation” social network that positions itself as the anti-Facebook: “Your private life is not for sale. No ads. No Spyware. No BS,” its website proclaims." Continues to mention "modest $5.2 million" funding round. Also a "sister product", MeWePRO, a Slack competitor.

  • 5 easy and simple ways to protect your privacy online — how to prepare for the next big threat Medium/Mark Weinstein (November 16, 2016) "If there’s one thing everyone wants to protect it’s their privacy and information online."

  • Startup MeWe Launches Free, 'No Ads' Social Network eWeek (March 16, 2016) "MeWe, a new network engineered with its users' data privacy built in, is betting that a lot of people will say yes to both of those questions. The Mountain View, Calif.-based startup, whose parent company is Sgrouples.com, launched its freely available social network out of beta March 9 with more than 200,000 members already using it.... Sir Tim Berners-Lee, co-architect of the World Wide Web, found out about MeWe on his own and approached the company about getting involved."

  • Facebook Alternative MeWe closes $5.2M Series A Yahoo/PR Newswire (July 5, 2018). "The investment brings MeWe's total funding to $10 million, to support the engineering of MeWe and the enterprise version MeWePRO.... The company has relied on high net worth individuals for all of its funding including Lynda Weinman, founder of Lynda.com ...; Marci Shimoff, a #1 New York Times bestselling author ...; Rachel Roy...; and Jack Canfield."

  • Exactis Data Leak 2018: 340 Million Records Exposed InvestorPlace (June 29, 2018) "'Today's cookies can link your mobile phone to your laptop, to your home monitoring devices, and much, much more. Creepy? Scary? Orwellian? Yes, yes, yes,' Mark Weinstein, the privacy expert and founder of social media company MeWe, told MarketWatch. 'So imagine that Exactis, like Facebook, knows everything about you — really.'"

  • MeWe Raises $3M in Funding FinSMEs (March 9, 2016) "Sgrouples, Inc., the Mountain View, CA-based developer of MeWe, a social network with neither ads nor tracking, raised $3m in funding."

  • MeWe Raises $4.8 Million, Launches Next-Gen Social Network Cision/PRWeb (March 9, 2016) "The company also announced the completion of its $3 million Seed III round of funding at a $20 million valuation, bringing MeWe’s total funding to date to $4.8 million."

Technology

This section is a basic rundown of the user-visible site technology.

Mobile Web

The site is not natively accessible from a mobile Web browser as it is overlayed with a promotion for the mobile application instead. Selecting "Desktop View" in most mobile browsers should allow browser-based access.

Mobile App

There are both Android and iOS apps for MeWe. I've used neither of these, though the App store entries note:

  • MeWe Android 4.4 rating (13.1k ratings). Permissions: Contacts (read), Location (approximate/precise), SMS (receive), Phone (read status & identity), Photos/Media/Files (read, modify, & delete contents), Storage (read, modify, or delete), Camera (take pictures/videos), Microphone (record audio), Device ID & Call Info (read status & identity), and numerous elements under Other.

  • MeWe iOS 4.3 rating (18.1K ratings) In-app purchases (additional features).

Crunchbase cites 209,220 mobile downloads over the past 30 days (via Apptopia), an 80.78% monthly growth rate, from Google Play.

Desktop Web

Either selecting "View Desktop" or navigating with a Desktop browser to https://www.mewe.com your are presented with a registration screen, with the "About", "Privacy Bill of Rights", "MeWe Challenge", and a language selector across the top of the page. Information requested are first and last name, phone or email, and a password. Pseudonymous identities are permitted, though this isn't noted on the login screen. Returning members can use the "Member Log In" button.

The uMatrix Firefox extension reveals no third-party content: all page elements are served from mewe.com, img.mewe.com, cdn.mewe.com, or ws.mewe.com. (In subsequent browsing, you may find third-party plugins from, for example, YouTube, for videos, or Giphy, for animated GIFs.)

The web front-end is nginx. The site uses SSL v3, issued by DigiCert Inc. to Sgrouples, Inc.

Onboarding

The onboarding experience is stark. There is no default content presented. A set of unidentified icons spans the top of the screen, these turn out to be Home, Chats, Groups, Pages, and Events. New users have to, somehow, find groups or people to connect with, and there's little guidance as to how to do this.

Interface

Generally there is a three panel view, with left- and right-hand sidebars of largely navigational or status information, and a central panel with main content. There are also pop-up elements for chats, an omnipresent feature of the site.

Controls display labels on some devices and/or resolutions. Controls do not provide tooltips for navigational aid.

Features

Among the touted features of MeWe are:

  • My Cloud - Seamlessly organize all your content in My Cloud; it's your personal cloud. My Cloud offers an interactive dashboard for you to control everything you’ve posted or shared - making it simple to delete or reshare.
  • Unique profiles - Be yourself, free from any tracking and spying. Customize your profile for every group you create or join.
  • Voice integration (on any or all content) - Post pictures, videos, or documents and include a voice message. Respond to a shared post or just chat. MeWe’s voice integration works for you and your contacts throughout the entire platform.
  • Universal tagging - This is a new, convenient way to sort and organize all the content you receive and share, making it easy to find everything, anytime.
  • Enhanced permission control (patent issued) - Manage permissions on a granular level and decide exactly who sees what. You can also remove yourself from the search directory, make yourself invisible to other members online, and much more.
  • Much More – join MeWe today and take a look inside! MeWe is the next-gen social networking experience designed for you to have fun, stay in touch, collaborate, organize, and simplify.

Community

A key aspect of any social network is its community. Some of the available or ascertained information on this follows.

Size

Weinstein claims a "million+ following inside MeWe.com" on Twitter.

The largest visible groups appear to have a maximum of around 15,000 members , for "Awesome gifs". "Clean Comedy" rates 13,350, and the largest open political grous, 11,000+ members.

This compares to Google+ which has a staggering, though Android-registrations-inflated 3.3 billion profiles, and 7.9 million communities, though the largest of these come in at under 10 million members. It's likely that MeWe's membership is on the whole more more active than Google+'s, where generally-visible posting activity was limited to just over 9% of all profiles, and the active user base was well under 1% of the total nominal population.

Active Users

MeWe do not publish active users (e.g., MUA / monthly active users) statistics.

Groups

MeWe is principally a group-oriented discussion site -- interactions take place either between individuals or within group contexts. Virtually all discovery is group-oriented. The selection and dynamics of groups on the site will likely strongly affect user experience, so exploring the available groups and their characteristics is of interest.

"MeWe has over 60,000 open groups" according to its FAQ.

The Open groups -- visible to any registered MeWe user, though not to the general public Web -- are browseable, though sections and topics must be expanded to view the contents: an overview isn't immediately accessible. We provide a taste here.

A selection of ten featured topics spans the top of the browser. As I view these, they are:

  • MeWe Favorites
  • Music
  • Entertainment
  • Lifestyle
  • Travel
  • Health & Fitness
  • Foodies
  • Cars & Motorcycles
  • Technology
  • Fashion and Beauty

Specific groups may appear in multiple categories.

The top Groups within these topics have, variously, 15,482, 7,738, 15,482 (dupe), 7,745, 8,223, 8,220, 1,713, 9,527, 2,716, and 1,516 members. Listings scroll at length -- the Music topic has 234 Groups, ranging in size from 5 to 5,738 members, with a median of 59, mean of 311.4, and a 90%ile of 743.5.

Below this is a grid of topics, 122 in all, ranging from Activism to Wellness, and including among them. A selected sample of these topics, with top groups listed members in (parens), follows:

The Google Plus expats group seems the most active of these by far.

Political Groups

It's curious that MeWe make a specific point in their FAQ that:

At MeWe we have absolutely no political agenda and we have a very straightforward Terms of Service. MeWe is for all law-abiding people everywhere in the world, regardless of political, ethnic, religious, sexual, and other preferences.

There are 403 political groups on MeWe. I won't list all of them here, but the first 100 or so give a pretty clear idea of flavour. Again, membership is in (parentheses). Note that half the total political Groups memberships are in the first 21 groups listed here, the first 6 are 25% of the total.

It seems there is relatively little representation from the left wing, or even the centre, of the political spectrum. A case-insensitive match for "liberal" turns up:

  • 104: Conservatives Against Liberal Beliefs C.A.L.I.B (273)
  • 184: Progressive and Liberal Politics (119)
  • 301: Liberalism is a Mental Disorder (33)
  • 302: Resistance Against Liberal Socialism (33)
  • 358: NOT For Liberals (17)
  • 367: Drinking Liberally Houston (14)
  • 400: Stephanie Miller's Sexy Liberal Army (6)

Mainstream political parties are little represented, though again, the balance seems skewed searching on "(democrat|republic|gop)":

  • 11: Return of the Republic (2509)
  • 161: Death to the Democrat Party! (138)
  • 188: Republican Liberty Caucus (113)
  • 306: Twin Cities South Metro Republicans (32)
  • 316: Non-Conspiracy, Non-Republican Libertarians (30)
  • 323: Democrats and Veterans Party (28)
  • 364: GOP Fireworks (15)
  • 391: Saving The Republic: Video News & Opinion (8)

The terms "left" and "right" provide a few matches, not all strictly political-axis aligned:

  • 7: The Right To Self Defense (3757)
  • 80: RISE OF THE RIGHT (371)
  • 150: POLITICS ON THE LEFT (156)
  • 157: 1st Amendment Rights Protected By The 2nd Amendmen (141)
  • 209: On The Left With Jeremy Corbyn (84)
  • 262: Eyes-Left Labour & PP - Social Media (49)
  • 300: Gather Left (33)
  • 385: Defend Washington State Gun Rights (9)
  • 390: Left Coast Conservatives (8)

Socialism and Communism also warrant a few mentions:

  • 121: Revolutionary Socialists United (204)
  • 216: Socialist Thought (79)
  • 220: Stories Of Communism (76)
  • 262: Eyes-Left Labour & PP - Social Media (49)
  • 288: Snuggly Wuggly Socialists (38)
  • 302: Resistance Against Liberal Socialism (33)

And there are some references to green, labour/labor parties:

  • 97: FRIENDS THAT LIKE JILL STEIN AND THE GREEN PARTY (292)
  • 100: Green Party Supporters 2020 (283)
  • 262: Eyes-Left Labour & PP - Social Media (49)
  • 320: Green Party of Ohio Issues & Discussion Group (29)

Conclusion

Whilst there may not be a political agenda, there does appear to be at least a slight political bias to the site.

Those seeking new homes online may wish to take this into account.

How I’ve decided to be better each day with compounding interest

Early 2015 was a difficult part of my life as I was separating from my daughters -mother after spending 7 years together. It also became the time that I was trying to go out and figure out life on my own as a professional poker player and hitting a nice score for $40k, and trying to listen to the voices in my ear for the past 5 years prior, “why don’t you play full time?” As if it was that easy to just “do it”. So what could go wrong? Freshly single and ready to take on a career with more responsibility than i could ever imagine.

So I did. The freedom, the confidence, the success. It is a fun ride and started off well. Our semi-private $5/$10 ($2500 buyin cash game) game back home was poppin and my hourly rate was embarrassingly high over the 1.5 years that it ran consistently at least one 8 hour session per week. Then I got lazy with cash games and started chasing the marquee tournament score.

2016 WSOP was amongst the most exciting time in my life. I was playing a huge schedule, backers were confident, my skills were sharp, and I was ready to fly. It culminated with an opportunity in the $2500 NL event, where I made the final table.

I’m not gonna lie, it is all that it was cracked up to be. Even being able to sit next to my buddy Darryll makes me question if we are all just living in a simulation. It was great. The final table was going well, and then a hand happened with 7 left that is the wrong type of marquee hand that we were looking for.

In high stakes poker terms, my hand looked like suicide. I have always valued my ability to read opponents and interpret why they are giving that read to me more often than most. I was playing against an opponent that tried to angle shoot me by “accidentally” 4betting me pre-flop for the minimum by faking a call. Not only did I peel his 4b with A♦️2♦️, but I called a check raise allin on the flop of A♥️J♣️T♣️... I was chip leader with 7 left and my opponent was 2nd in chips. This pot was for 35+% of the chips in play! First is $440k and 7th is $45k! But my opponent showed me the K♠️K♥️ the way I expected him too. Q♦️ on the river was all she wrote. He had a 24% or so chance to win this hand on the flop. Arguments could be made that it’s irresponsible to play a pot this big even if I was 76%, but that wasn’t really part of my personality at the time. All this hard work, all this work, all this effort completely removed.

My chips are low, I am still playing for so much money that it would be irresponsible to be anything but laser focused. “Oh well, could have happened a lot earlier in the tourney” I remind myself. I laddered one spot and got $54k for my efforts. I spent $140k in buyins that summer. Unfortunately this math doesn’t work out for the hero very well.

Was I... Depressed? Probably Angry? You betcha Sad? Of course Questioning life? More than ever

Unfortunately I didn’t handle it very well or responsibly. Poker had really cheated on me for the first time. For the 2nd time I found out how much something you love can hurt. I went out on a bender and didn’t respect my relationship with my job at that time. I looked for alternative paths.

In 2017 I sold life insurance, and it really opened my eyes to how misleading the traditional financial world intends to be. I also found this beautiful system known as bitcoin. Which opened my eyes to Wall Street. There are so many consequences of the way this system is built. I had an opportunity to buy 40 BTC in 2015 for $10k, but I wasn’t ready for that dive yet. I’m wiser, more responsible, and enjoying the upward rise.

In the first week of Jan 2018, Crypto was booming and reaching all time highs across the boards. I remember we were openly crediting this flood of market cap with “oh, obviously the institutional investors needed the fiscal year to start for their new quarterly reports to get in!” Boy were we stupid.

2018 has been a miserable ride in crypto and I don’t know where it’s going. I know there are many people out there that are misrepresenting themselves and I don’t want to be one of them. This downturn sucks, but I decided that I’m going to do something about it. I got a job. My old job in the poker room where I used to play from time to time over the past 3 years. I’m investing my time and resources into my future. I’m an investor.

I’ve been asked a lot of weird questions and been asked some things that have been confusing for me. My life has honestly never been better. “Had to put your tail between your legs and get a job?” Signifying as if these last few years were some sort of failure to me.

On the contrary, I’m investing in myself, my family, and my future more than I ever have. I’m an investor at heart. I’ve made some mistakes and poker will always be a portion of my portfolio. I’m always going to be a “poker-guy” to a group of people. Just like I’m the “crypto-guy” to a lot of people, “old MTG bro” to many, “YJackpot representative” to some, “Million Dollar Poker Coach” to a select group, “old asshole from high school” to a bunch of others, Apple support for my loved ones, a father to my daughter, and hopefully your podcast guy, YouTube guy, golf guy, life advice guy, and all sorts of guys-to others in the future!

Who I am to you is a combination of your perceptions plus your assumptions.

I’m educating myself to be the best investor I can be. When I go to the gym I’m investing in my health. When I go to the Hallmark for a “thinking of you” card for my girlfriend, it’s an investment into my future wife. When i invest in bitcoin I’m investing in too many things to list. When I help my daughter with her homework it’s an investment into OUR future.

Likewise, when you neglect your health, your romance, your family, and your finances, you become the product of those circumstances. It’s up to you if you want to decide to be better. Every moment of every day counts.

What did the co-founder of BTCC and CEO of Crypt-ON talk about?

The Chinese cryptocurrency exchange BTCC is well known to the world crypto community. Its co-founder and former CEO Bobby Lee is currently taking part in the BLOCKSHOW ASIA 2018, the main one of the annual series of events Asia Blockchain Week, taking place these days in Singapore in the famous Marina Bay Sands hotel. Recently, Bobby shared in his Twitter thoughts about the imminent changes, which, in his view, will increase the level of global liquidity of cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin. He predicts that shortly bitcoin price will rise to $ 60,000.

A similar opinion shared by the CEO of Crypt-ON Paul Andreev, who also became a participator of BLOCKSHOW ASIA 2018, and presented our project — a financial p2p platform with great prospects. Bobby and Paul discussed the future of the cryptocurrency market, the price of bitcoin, shared their expectations and agreed that we should expect changes for the better, because in reality everything is just getting started, and the most important events in the crypto industry are lies ahead.

If you also attended this large-scale event and wanted to discuss the future of cryptocurrencies with Paul or learn more about the Crypt-ON platform, you can personally talk to him at BLOCKSHOW ASIA 2018, where he will answer all your questions, share the nearest plans of the project, talk about how TGE and work on the platform services are going.

ICO Marketing – Getting Started With the Fundamentals for Your ICO Launch 🚀🚀🚀

(part 2)

👉ICO Landing Pages

Our aim is to run a multi-faceted campaign across several channels. It is imperative that we get all our prospects onto an email list (I think chatbots are better- I’ll give you an example at the end of the guide) so that we can build a community around them and send them updates about our ICO and launches.

You will need landing pages for several purposes:

  1. Newsletter signups for project updates
  2. Community signups
  3. Ad signups

And you need a landing page for this that’s both attention-grabbing and well designed.

You can always use a drag and drop page builder for this- I like to use Simvoly or the templates in my WP theme (If you’re thinking about chatbots, I use Manychat to set up landing pages).

However, you need to split test for conversions. There’s no way around this. It should be done to make sure you get as many people to signup.

I like to use Google Optimize. I’ve covered everything about setting up up Google Optimize in epic detail in this post.

An open letter to the community - We need to put our money where our mouths are and support decentralization and dApps

Hey everyone,

As I'm sure you all know full well, early adoption of crypto is primarily speculative trading, so this post is gonna focus mainly on the problems with trading in this space right now (centralized exchanges, regulations, lack of investment products, etc), and how we can shift our mindsets as a community to put our money where our mouth is and rally behind startups doing the right things (decentralized exchanges, dApps, protocols and necessary infrastructure).

Why? Because for the first time in history we have a disruptive new technology that can really change the landscape in every industry imaginable, and we are at the stage where we're planting the seeds of these new products and companies, so why not support the right ones so we can realize the future we're all envisioning?

I recently wrote an article on this on Hackernoon here: https://hackernoon.com/its-time-to-address-the-massive-problems-of-centralized-exchanges-ac2cfb66bef8, but I thought I'd expand on it and share my thoughts on how to move this space forward in terms of getting more dApp adoption and usage.

Who uses dApps anyways?

Blockgeeks just published a report on dApp usage for those interested, there is definitely some growth but since the bear market it has definitely tapered off: https://blockgeeks.com/guides/report-dapps-november-2018/

It's obviously nowhere near mainstream adoption, but it's a great start, so there's hope! There's definitely a ton of things that should immediately be addressed and are of high importance IMO, so I'm going to lay them out:

First, we need to address the massive problems of centralized exchanges

Bitcoin aside, the crypto space as a whole is still pretty young, the current experience of trading crypto assets is understandably a fragmented experience with scattered pockets of liquidity, and a highly technical and high friction process. But the irony is that we have the technology to avoid the security flaws that plague centralized exchanges and the adoption of crypto - decentralized trading.

There are a ton of centralized exchanges available to the public today, but a much smaller subset of these exchanges are properly regulated, not to mention trustworthy and reliable. I know the pro traders out there might say, "Well DEXes aren't fast enough, or I can't run bots on them yet". That's fair, but if you want to see them succeed some day, every trade helps. If it's a trade that you think is executable on a DEX, do it there instead of on a centralized one. That's how adoption happens, one user at a time.

While industry pioneers like Coinbase have pushed the space forward and newer entrants like Binance raised the bar for the alt-coin trading experience, the industry still suffers from constant hacks and malicious acts.

We need to stop relying on centralized trading/hot wallets as they are huge security risks As far as we know, over $1 billion worth of crypto assets have been hacked & stolen from centralized exchanges in 2018 alone.

Here's the biggest incidents in 2018:

  • $500 million worth of NEM stolen from Coincheck — The 2nd largest exchange in Japan
  • $195 million hacked from BitGrail — Italian exchange and the first to list Nano (I myself was a victim of this)
  • $45 million hacked from Binance — One of the largest global exchanges
  • $40 million stolen in Coinrail hack — A boutique exchange in South Korea
  • $60 million hacked from Zaif — Exchange in Japan

The root cause of this is that centralized wallets are increasingly large honeypots.

The nature of a centralized exchange dictates that some trusted third party is storing the crypto assets of its users to create a pool of liquidity, this being done mostly by aggregating funds into exchange-owned digital wallets where assets from users are pooled into.

Millions of people could lose not just money but also their identity and data handed over to centralized exchanges as well.

While we're still in a bear market this may not happen as frequent, but it's reasonable to be expect that in the next bull-run the frequency and severity of attacks will only rise and a scenario in which an attack as widespread as the recent 50 million user Facebook hack — where both private data and money were stolen — could happen. There's already plenty of exchanges that are careless with handling user identity, handing over your personal ID is not a trivial matter and exchanges should follow the best practices to store and secure them if they're asking for them.

Second, we need clearer, more sensible regulation that fosters innovation and protects investors

This may be an unpopular opinion around these parts, but sensible regulation is good for both the industry and users, to ensure exchanges coming online meet certain requirements, so we're not operating and trading in this wild wild west of shady exchanges.

People who trade today need to have a pretty damn high appetite and tolerance for risk, not to mention an acute ability to discern legitimate investments from the rampant exit scams and phishing attacks. (Just see yesterday's thread about the guy's dad who bought into Onecoin on the advice of a "friend").

The vague stance on the part of governments also means many crypto startups operate in a regulatory grey area (I have first hand experience with this working in the space). The SEC only recently clarified that they view Bitcoin and Ethereum as not a security token, meaning it wouldn’t be subject to existing securities laws.

IMO the current lack of regulatory clarity has lead to a low barrier of entry for operating crypto exchanges, however this is starting to change as seen with the recent EtherDelta SEC charges, they're clearly making a statement now that you need to follow the laws when you open an exchange.

But we can do better, and push lawmakers to create more defined rules that we need to play by, and at the same time educate them so they understand not just the technology, but the implications and potential use cases and how we can get there while allowing companies to innovate, new startups to rise, all while protecting consumers. That way we'll have more legal clarity as the industry matures that is business friendly.

Third, we need a more diversified set of investment products/options for crypto. More wealth generated = more growth and adoption

Up until recently, you were only able to purchase tokens on their own from an exchange. Today, we are starting to see an emergence of basic index funds such as the new Coinbase Bundle and Bitwise. It wasn’t until late 2017 that we saw the introduction of Bitcoin Futures from CBOE and CME.

We expect new companies to continue entering this arena, especially crypto ETFs (ie: Bakkt in Jan 2019 maybe?), as well as other attempts at index funds or derivatives.

There's a bunch of teams doing great stuff:

  • Bitwise - They're one of the first crypto index funds
  • Hodlbot - Another index fund
  • Shrimpy - A way to automatically invest and rebalance your portfolio
  • LakeProject - Working on AI driven investments that automatically build a portfolio for anyone (R&D phase)

Lastly, we need to punish greed and reward companies doing the right things

While it’s not a problem particularly limited to centralized exchanges, it’s been reported that listing a token can cost as much as $3 million. In contrast, listing a stock on NASDAQ costs $125k to $300k plus annual maintenance fees.

This is just one example of the greed exhibited by those who have leverage and the middlemen who stand to profit in between (consultants, brokers, ICO firms, etc). These high fees dampen innovation as they’re too great of a cost to bear for most token/ICO projects. This is crucial for most projects as they need liquidity to bootstrap their network and to remain favourable with the community that invested in them.

At least 7 of the top 10 exchanges engaging in excessive wash trading from 12x to over 100x their true volume.

Foul play

Plenty of centralized exchanges have been suspected and accused of wash trading (creating fake volume), insider trading, and price manipulation.

High user trading fees

As centralized exchanges carry more risk, and have more opaque control of their platform, they often charge higher fees compared to a decentralized exchange.

Withdrawal limits

Centralized exchanges impose a withdrawal limit, as a security measure to limit the amount that can be withdrawn at once. However, there’s also a misalignment of incentives, as they stand to benefit when you keep your funds locked on their platform so they can maximize trading fees

There's a bunch of great projects and base layer infrastructure that people should look into and support, not just the protocols but also startups building on top of them, some of my fav protocols include:

  • 0x Project - Powering decentralized exchanges for tokens, NFTs, etc
  • Set protocol - These guys are building a protocol to allow anyone to easily bundle any assets to create more sophisticated investment products
  • dYdX Protocol - This allows anyone to integrate margin trading and derivatives in their dApp
  • Dharma protocol - This protocol facilitates lending in a decentralized way
  • Compound protocol - A money market protocol that allows hodlers to earn interest on their tokens
  • Cosmos Network - Working on blockchain interoperability and tooling around Ethereum and Web3

Personally I'm working in one of the many, many startups in the space trying to build on top of these decentralized infrastructures to give everyone a more seamless experience to access, trade, and use crypto. But you can imagine how hard it is to gain any traction much less build a sustainable business especially in a bear market like this, and when everyone has either completely lost their motivation or still flocking to centralized exchanges to chase pumps knowing full well the risks and unethical practices.

Cool story, what are you doing about it?

I work with a team called the LakeProject, and we're a group of people that came together because we believe that decentralized platforms will address a lot of these concerns, so we're putting our money where our mouth is and building them. If you want to help or learn more about what we're doing here's our site: http://lakeproject.co. We also built our first decentralized product here which is a trading platform built on 0x: https://trade.lakeproject.co

In conclusion - Vote with your money and your time, it makes a difference

I hope this post made sense and I made somewhat of a decent case (?) on why we need to shift our mindset from simply trading and hodling to proactively choosing where to participate, what dApps to use, and which startups to support.

IMHO this is key for adoption and it will seriously help startups (like ours) to grow and be able to make a difference in the industry and push forward and pioneer a new paradigm of operating a decentralized business. I think everyone in the space right now is still learning and trying to understand how that might look in the future, but the more support and usage we get, the sooner we'll learn and the brighter our future will be.

If you've gotten this far, thanks for putting up with my clickbaity title and reading this thread :)
