Is the country / city you live in crypto friendly?

I live in Europe (moved between uk, Germany and Italy) and most places I've been too i would consider far from modern let alone crypto friendly. Hell, in Germany you can't even use credit cards to pay in most stores or restaurants. But then i went to Lisbon, Portugal - a country that is supposedly poor and old fashioned - and i was AMAZED by the crypto community there. There were weekly crypto events, meetups, festivals, NFT art galleries and in many bars you could buy beer with bitcoin! I think it has to do with the fact people supposedly don't pay taxes on crypto trades there.

So, what's the situation where you live? Any other places where crypto is "a thing" (we all heard of el salvador)?

Tax Tidbits From a CPA (US)

Without doxxing myself, I've been a CPA (specifically, a tax accountant) in the US for about 10 years. Recently at my firm, I've been included in a small group of professionals forming a network of crypto tax consultants and specialists. As I truly love the crypto community, the best contribution to this sub I can think of is to try to 1) put together a few tax tidbits and 2) to answer every tax question that I can in the comments. Reading alot of comments and posts in the sub, I'm a bit concerned that my fellow crypto enthusiasts are going to put themselves at risk of the IRS by not fully understanding the extent of their activities. Now before I start answering, I'll add that anything I say should be used as a guide to either do further research on your own to understand your tax situation as it relates to crypto, or to acknowledge that your tax situation may be over your head and you should seek out a tax professional. There are tax resources such as koinly, and while I don't use them personally, I believe they are worth the investment - but I also want people to understand their own tax situation to make sure any paid service is handling your situation correctly.

Without further adieu, here are a few items of general knowledge and feel free to ask questions below and I'll try to answer everything (I'm operating under the assumption this post will generate probably 25 comments, so if for some reason it blows up, be patient and I'll try to get to everything). This will also be entirely US specific, anyone outside of the US, I'm sorry but I'm in no position to give tax opinions.

1) Your exchange, wallet, etc will likely not issue you a 1099-B for your trading activity, so don't count on getting any help from them, other than your transaction details. This won't be required for a few years and was part of the infrastructure bill.

2) Every crypto you swap, exchange, convert, sell, earn lending/bonding reward, mine, earn staking rewards, receive airdrops on is a taxable event in the current year.

3) To emphasize the point above, this includes MOONS. Yes, all of those MOONS you receive via karma distribution should be picked up on your tax return. Same as BAT rewards by using Brave.

4) The value you pick up on any rewards, mining, staking, airdrops, faucets is the fair market value at the time of receipt. You should be tracking this on your own or using a service.

5) The amount you pick up into income is now your basis. Basis is "cost".

6) Mining is considered self-employment income and should be reported on Schedule C, which differs from staking which would be picked up as other income, along with the other items not including selling, swapping, exchanging.

7) Sending a crypto from one wallet or exchange to another is not a taxable event - though you should track your transaction fees to include in your basis.

8) NFTs are treated the same way as everything above.

9) Keep good records. If you do not maintain good records or lose them and are not able to substantiate your cost basis, the IRS could make it $0, which would increase taxes you owe.

10) Holding period can give tax benefits. If you sell something you've held for a year, it's a long term capital gain and is taxed at preferential rates. Less than a year is at ordinary rates.

11) You are supposed to report the date purchased, date sold, cost, and sales proceeds of EVERY sell (exchange, sell, swap). Even if this results in $0 gain or loss.

12) Wash sale rules don't apply, however, selling something and immediately buying it back for tax loss harvesting could violate economic substance rules and on audit, the loss could be disallowed (it would likely be incorporated back into your basis).

13) Monero won't save you from paying taxes. Nor will boating accidents.

14) You can trade crypto using crypto/bitcoin IRAs and the gains are tax free, but you can't pull out until retirement. I don't utilize these services, but they exist.

That's what I can think of for the time being, I'll make an edit if anything else important pops into my head. I hope this and any questions provide some useful information to people in this sub. Best of luck to all!

TLDR: Taxes are hard, if you don't have your arms around it, seek a professional and bite the bullet and pay. Feel free to ask tax questions below and I'll answer what I can.

Is it time to consider a possible bear market?

I’m bullish on Cryptocurrency so don’t downvote me to hell for having a differing opinion that I want discuss

Having said that, I think on some reasonable and realistic level that we need to take into consideration a possible bear market, because everybody and I mean everybody from retail to influencers are predicting this massive 10k candle rally from Bitcoin which will eventually drive up the rest of the market, but where is this extra trillions of dollars going to come from?

I mean let’s be realistic, every price model this far has been wrong the last two months, Crypto has remained virtually stagnated with strange ups and downs, which usually happen in bear markets. I understand the volatility, but going up 10% and back down 10% every day for weeks is a bit off.

Then one has to think about who is going to be pouring trillions of dollars into Crypto for this massive pump. Institutions only have billions of dollars, and even when you look at gold you see it’s worth around 11 trillion which many of these institutions are invested in. We can speculate that Bitcoin is better than gold, but that doesn’t really matter if the mass public and institutional investors don’t believe that.

Over half of the population doesn’t even invest in the stock market, even more don’t invest in Cryoto, and so my question is, where will this money come from, or will we remain flat for a long time until some innovation or event takes place?

Most Likely Medium-Term Future for Bitcoin?

I'm trying to gather as many opinions on this topic as possible for my work so any help would be greatly appreciated. Based on research I've narrowed down the most widely discussed potential futures for cryptocurrencies into the following categories.

As these aren't necessarily mutually exclusive events, please comment multiple options below if you feel two or three could coexist.

a) Continuous growth & institutional adoption

b) Bear market and stronger price stability

c) Governmental adoption of Bitcoin or another existing token

d) Government created token

e) Cryptocurrencies replace fiat

f) Tighter regulations

g) Outright ban

h) Other (elaborate)

Thanks!

With DeFi hacks at an all-time high in 2021, will Decentralized insurance protocols become more relevant than ever in 2022?

I was just looking at an article from zycrypto.com regarding a user on Badger DAO who had 900 BTC stolen in a DeFi hack. According to zycrypto.com, DeFi hacks are currently at an all-time high, with 73 Defi exploit incidents ($1.5 billion lost to hacks) listed on the DeFi tool Cryptosec.

According to the protocol InsurAce, as of last December (2020), the TVL (Total Value Locked) peaked in the DeFi space at around $16 billion. At that point, the % of TVL covered from existing insurance projects was no more than 2%, and often dipping much lower than 1%.

Currently, in December of 2021, zycrypto discusses that we are looking at a TVL of nearly $300 billion, which the TVL covered by Dencentralized insurance is somewhere in the vicinity of $1.6 billion. This may be off but I am still searching for good sources on the total current coverage.

Does anyone else feel the insuring of DeFi assets will see huge growth in the coming years? It seems incredibly underdeveloped recently, although some protocols are seeing increases in usage as of late. As more money joins and traditional finance adopts more DeFi practices, insurance seems like a glaringly necessary component, especially with Smart Contract usage coming into play more.

For example, InsurAce (a KYC-less Insurance protocol with a current coverage of $169 million assets) sells covers for particular crypto. Just for curiosity sake, I looked at the apparent premium needed to get a 90 day $5000 DAI coverage for a Loopring Smart Contract https://i.imgur.com/F7lvlIL.png. Seems like it would cost you $32 DAI to ensure $5000 of your LRC contract is covered, so long as it fits the below criteria.

  1. During the Cover Period, there is a Material Loss of insured’s crypto assets due to an unauthorized, malicious or criminal act aiming at exploiting the Designated smart contracts’ code vulnerabilities; and
  2. The loss of insured crypto assets is permanently irreversible with no means of repayment or recovery by any parties in the future. It can be in form of being moved to another address or addresses, which the insured cannot access or control permanently; and
  3. The loss is directly linked to the wallet address which the insured used to purchase the cover or the insured provides evidence to prove the ownership of the impacted wallet address.

Some areas of exclusion for current coverage are as follows:

  1. Assets lost are NFTs; or
  2. Any losses due to phishing, private key security breaches, malware, exchange transaction hacks or any other activities where the Designated smart contract continues to act as intended or any activities conducted by insured because of personal careless or misunderstanding; or Any claims due to individual or group’s intentional actions that utilize the Designated smart contract for the purpose of making claims on this Cover; or
  3. Any losses due to devaluation of insured's assets, regardless of such devaluation is related to the attack or not; or
  4. Any losses due to the owners or controllers of the covered protocol
confiscating or stealing funds from users in line with the permissions of the covered protocol; or
  5. Any hacks or pre-defined insured events occurring outside of the Cover Period; or
  6. Any hacks or pre-defined insured events occurring during the Cover Period but the hack occurred or is known, or the hack is due to the bug being disclosed to the public, before the Cover Period; or
  7. Any events where any other external interoperable or interactive smart contracts, are hacked or manipulated in an unintended way, while the Designated smart contract continues to operate as intended; or
  8. Any events where inputs, that are external to the Designated smart
contract, behave or are manipulated in an unintended way, while the Designated smart contract continues to operate as intended, where inputs include but are not limited to: oracles, governance systems, incentive structures, miner behaviour and network congestion; or

Thoughts? Anyone have knowledge in this space or feel like there is a lot of potential here?

other projects:

Cover Protocol - a peer to peer coverage platform using fungible tokens that enables the market set projects' coverage prices

Nexus Mutual - a decentralized insurance platform where people can share risk particularly against smart contract bugs, failure or other black swan events

Nsure - an open insurance platform for open finance, in a marketplace model that enables risk outsourcing and underwriting

Union - an insurance platform that provides DeFi users with bundled protection with different layers of coverage and segregated underwriter exposure

From companies- like JP Morgan, PayPal, Deutsche Bank- denouncing Bitcoin (and crypto) to them openly advocating the use of it (and crypto)- we all grew up.

I remember the times- not too far in the past- when all the big institutions were moving away from Bitcoin, calling it a frauds' game, a bubble, a fad amongst many other things.

The same companies now are advocating the use of this 'asset class' now.

JP Morgan grew up from calling it a bubble to calling it an asset class which deserves atleast a % of our portfolio. They infact held their first ever crypto event this week.

Deutsche Bank- the UK giant- from its stance of calling Bitcoin a volatile stock has now shifted to calling it an important asset which has to be present in your portfolio. They grew up too.

Visa from not working with Bitcoin to enabling transactions in Bitcoins grew up as well.

Similarly, many such companies grew up and many are in the stage of growing up.

And we the users- we all grew up from all this commotion and question surrounding the veracity of crypto to this growing fondness of the same questioners towards crypto.

Bank of America: The Metaverse Is a Massive Opportunity for The Crypto Industry

Haim Israel is keen on the metaverse and thinks it will boost the cryptocurrency universe to another level. Haim Israel – a strategist at Bank of America – believes the metaverse will create huge opportunities for blockchain technology. It will also cause digital assets to start being employed widely for financial transactions.

Nonetheless, private tokens are too volatile, and stablecoins like Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC) are more likely to prevail, he opined.

The Metaverse Is The Future In a recent interview, the Managing Director and Global Strategist at Bank of America – Haim Israel – described the metaverse as the tool that will drive the cryptocurrency industry towards mass adoption if certain conditions are met:

“I definitely believe this is a massive, massive opportunity. You need the right platforms… that are definitely going to be a big opportunity for this entire ecosystem.”

Israel also predicted that the metaverse is where “we’re going to start using cryptocurrencies as currencies.” However, existing digital assets such as bitcoin, ether, and the rest are too volatile to fit in this role. As such, stablecoins will probably prevail since they are pegged to fiat currencies or precious metals, which tend to fluctuate a lot less.

Subsequently, Israel believes that if cryptocurrencies become widely used in the metaverse, large tech companies will enter the landscape. The term “metaverse” got increasingly popular during the last couple of months, especially after Mark Zuckerberg announced the rebranding of Facebook to Meta – a new title that emphasizes his firm’s vision.

Put simply, the metaverse is a virtual world where people can play games, socialize, work, build things, and even trade and earn crypto assets.

The Metaverse Space May Soon Reach $1T Market Value According to a report by the leading digital asset manager – Grayscale, the metaverse industry world could soon be worth over $1 trillion.

The investment giant noted that the opportunity for the space extends far beyond gaming and touches sectors like advertising, digital events, social commerce, hardware, and developer/creator monetization.

Assuming the latest data is correct, the total market capitalization of Web 3.0 metaverse crypto networks is already near $30 billion. However, the industry might emerge as a disruptor for Web 3.0, similar to how Facebook changed Web 2.0.

The analysis also showed that the number of metaverse wallets had multiplied by a factor of ten compared to the beginning of last year. In the last quarter of 2021, the number stood at around 50,000.

Decoupling of Crypto from Stocks | 12.1 Crypto Market Update and Investing Report

OVERVIEW

  • Market Insight: Decoupling
  • Market update (BTC, SOL, LUNA, EGLD)
  • Major Market News ( CRO, CTK, FTT, 1INCH)
  • Notable Events (CRO, ASTAR, KASH)
  • NOOBIES: Dr. Gavin Wood

Market Insight: Decoupling

Crypto markets continue to chug along while the stock market struggles. The S&P 500 is down -5.06% since hitting new highs on Nov 22nd. Stocks have been hit hard with news of monetary policy change and Omnicron, the newest Covid variant. A 5% decrease in stocks is considered a significant drop. Volume is increasing significantly during the selloff which adds to the intensity of the drop. The volatility index (VIX) is up to 31.13 in a 9-month high.

In the same period TOTAL (Total crypto market) has remained flat. Some major Altcoins have been strong in the past week. (LUNA +50%, ALGO +5.6, ETH +5.4%, MATIC +12.6%).

S&P 500 1D chart

Breaking from historic fashion, the crypto market is continuing to show strength despite stock market lulls. It may be too early to talk about decoupling of the stock market and crypto, but the past week has added a lot of promise to the proposition. There is growing evidence that some investors are seeking alternate investment vehicles due to stock market fears and other markets such as real estate are reaching extreme valuations. It’s early but the signs are promising. If more investors start entering the space, prices and volatility could increase quickly. Below is the SPY vs TOTAL chart (total crypto market), which will be an interesting chart to keep an eye on for the upcoming weeks. The downtrend on this chart began in Mar 2020, showing crypto as a better investment since that point. A break in this trend could help signal when a crypto bull market is over.

SPY vs TOTAL crypto market cap

  • · Solana (SOL) is up 27% since Friday and is testing the $220 resistance. Stochastics is in the oversold area on the 4H charts. Just like ETH, a retest of the trendline could be in its short-term future
  • · Total Market Cap (TOTAL) is down -.69% to $2.56T. TOTAL has tested 2.63T three times in the past three weeks.
  • · TOTAL3 (TOTAL – ETH/BTC) is flat today showing more funds are moving into altcoins vs BTC
  • · Elrond (EGLD) is showing a strong breakout of a downtrend on the 4H charts but the stochastic is reaching oversold area. EGLD has gone down 31% since Nov 22nd after a large runup due to the release of the Maiar Exchange. This could create an entry opportunity.

NOOBIES: Dr. Gavin Wood

Dr. Gavin James Wood is a British computer engineer and the co-founder of Ethereum alongside Vitalik Buterin. He laid the first stone in smart contracts through the creation of Solidity, which to this day, is the most widely used language in crypto. He described Ethereum as “one computer for the entire planet.” It was rumored he engineered Ethereum in a matter of weeks.

His recent work in crypto includes the creation of Polkadot and founding the Web3 Foundation. Polkadot, which has recently gone live, is described as an interconnected internet of blockchains which will facilitate the exchange of information in a trustless manner. Wood designed Polkadot after seeing the flaws in Ethereum. This past report goes deeper into Polkadot.

Web3 was created to redefine the structure between blockchain and the web. It aims to work towards decentralizing web architecture and returning the internet back to the users. Grants are awarded to projects that facilitate the grounds to a decentralized web through the Web3 foundation. Web3 foundation with the aid of Polkadot is positioned to bring on a new future with the integration of blockchain technology and the web.

Wood remains of the most influential personas in crypto and one that I recommend our community follows. If you would like to learn more about Dr. Wood, check out his self-written Zoolander-like webpage. After a good laugh, check out his some of his insightful speeches on Youtube.

I want to remind everyone that I am not here to shill any coins or projects. I wish they paid me good money to shill legit projects but that is not the case. I am going to have preferences but this in no way means these projects will outperform others, I merely mention them to bring them to your attention in hopes that you do deeper research.

Don’t forget to share what you find and help add value to our community.

Thanks for reading Fam!

Sup y'all?

Let's get right down to business. We should pretty much all know that DCA (into solid projects) + hodl is the way. We've been riding this crypto bull-run for a majority of this year. BTC runs have, until now, seemingly occurred in cycles, however, I have a sneaking suspicion that, due to looming mass-adoption, (crypto will eventually be as common tech as the cell phone, ... I suspect much sooner than we currently anticipate,) we will break the common cycle(s), due to institutional investors and gargantuan waves of hype, disregarding all fundamentals in play...

So, what happens when the market overcorrects and really turns bearish? (I believe this will happen just after a huge spike in price action, due to institutions and gamblers alike, ...) Do we merely continue to DCA + hodl?

I'd like to think we will all continue to do so.

Now- there are other options of what you can do with your time, relative to the cryptosphere, in a bearish market; the following lists have been composed with boredom / extra time in mind, especially for a time where buying the dip isn't the wisest choice, for, time in the market beats timing the market.

Let's go over some potential ways to remain in the loop without investing (much, if any,) additional money into your portfolio:

Players can explore over five maps and 100 levels to complete new challenges. In addition, players can earn the SparkPoint token to buy boosters to burst bubbles faster. The game is entirely free-to-play, although players will see advertisements regularly.

CRYPTOPOP - www.cryptopopcoin.com

CryptoPop is one of the best crypto mobile games for its simplicity. The game works essentially just like a candy-crush game. You can pop the bubbles to get some crypto. The more you pop, the more crypto you’ll receive. The game is a fun enough puzzler, and you’re going to be able to do it without having to devote too much energy to it.

The game will pay you out via Coinbase, which is one of the safer crypto exchanges around at the moment. You can easily send it over to a wallet on another exchange following this. This is a blockchain game that pays out Ethereum and Popcoin, but they plan on expanding to other big tokens like Litecoin and Dash.

BITCOIN BOUNCE - https://thndr.games

Bitcoin Bounce is a little different from a few of the others here, but it has a more direct system for rewarding you with crypto. Rather than giving you a bit of crypto every once in a while, this app allows you to collect tickets to enter into a raffle for crypto at the end of each day. While this means you could not get any crypto as a prize, it could mean you get more. The game itself is a fairly simple platformer, you’re just going to need to grab as many tickets as possible while moving from platform to platform.

BITCOIN SOLITAIRE

Bitcoin Solitaire is one of the best crypto mobile games as it combines a game a lot of people like to play on phones with the ability to get bitcoin. This is a standard solitaire game but the faster you complete it, the more points you earn. You can then transfer these points into cryptocurrency via Coinbase. This is a great game for mining crypto and it stands out from the crowd because of it.

CRYPTO PLANET - https://cryptoplanet.game

Crypto Planet adds a bit more gameplay other than just a small puzzler. This blockchain game has you explore a crypto planet and mine crystals. Like other mobile games, this is one that is reliant on you letting time pass. You leave the digger running on a crystal for a few hours and return to collect your crystals. The more crystals you mine, the more space chests you can buy. These are the things you can actually get cryptocurrency in.

This blockchain game has an in-game wallet where your coins are stored, but your crypto can then be moved to any other wallet. Bitcoin Bounce works well as it has different gameplay, and is very flexible on how you want to receive your crypto.

ALIEN RUN - www.alienrun.com

Alien Run deserves a spot on the best crypto games list for having a pretty different style of gameplay. In this game, you run through levels of platforming, like a traditional 2D side scroller. Every five levels you complete can earn you a fraction of bitcoin! There are loads of levels here too, so you can earn quite a bit as you progress.

Unlike the previous titles, this game is pretty engaging and needs your active input a bit more. If you are not into solitaire or tile matching games, then this one is the right choice for you.

BITCOIN POP - https://m.apkpure.com

Bitcoin Pop is a very similar game to Crypto Pop, but it is worth mentioning separately as it does have a different crypto on offer. This one will allow you to redeem Bitcoin rather than other cryptos. However, given the high value of Bitcoin it would take an excessively long time to get any amount enough worth transferring to your wallet. Most bitcoin games here will only pay out small amounts of Satoshis, but they do add up if you have an awful lot of patience.

That's all for now, folks! If there is significant interest, I will update and create a "Volume II" 8-)
