  • This is for high quality discussion of altcoins. All shilling or obvious pumping/dumping behavior will result in an immediate one day ban. This is your only warning.

If you're not sure what kind of discussion belongs in this thread, here are some example posts. News, TA, and sentiment analysis are great, too.

BitCoin, Discounted Gift Cards, Due Diligence & COGS with Retail Drop-shipping

So, I am a Retail Dropshipper.

When I sell something on eBay, then I buy it on Amazon and send it directly to the customer.

There are software’s that assist with this. I currently purchase thousands in inventory weekly with my own personal Amazon 5% cash back credit card.

There’s an offer that’s been tempting me. There is a company registered in the USA that offers 10% discounts when purchasing products using a fulfillment account they setup. Basically, the user sends funds directly to the company via Bitcoin, and they setup an Amazon buying account under the name like Software Auto Ordering, and use that to make purchases via Gift Card balance (which equals the money sent + an extra 10% (so send $100 and gift card balance increased by $110).

My first concern is regarding taxes: is there any problems with claiming Cost of Goods sold with that chain of events? (Debit Card -–> BitCoin -–> Gift Card balance used by an Amazon account (not matching my name but) with a name like “Software Company Auto Ordering”?)

My second concern, is there anything I need to do or know in terms of due diligence and Knowing My Customer? Of course the company won’t reveal their source because their customers would cut them out. This is a legally registered USA company with a physical location and the name of the owner is super clear. This isn’t some anonymous guy hiding behind a VPN selling 40% discounted gift cards. The CEO / Owner is on my Skype and he's active in his Facebook group.
Still, I certainly don’t want to be associated with or investigated for any sort felony money laundering scheme. Is this 10% discount (on thousands weekly from a legally registered USA LLC) reasonable or suspicious? Anything else I should know or do before I decide either way in regards to due diligence?

KiwiSaver Capital Monthly Update

The Momentum Fund

What a month it has been! In early May Bitcoin surged upwards from the low $5000 range to hit over $8000. There should be no surprises then that the Momentum Fund remains with its maximum Bitcoin allocation. As shown in the chart below, at the time of writing BTC is sitting at $8049, well above both the 100 DMA ($4819) and 200 DMA ($4470). The black arrow shows then the fund began. You can see the full Momentum Fund strategy here.

https://i.redd.it/40oimj06ofz21.png

The Community Fund

As explained in a post from last week, we are creating a new fund which will pool the community's views on which two coins will perform the best over the coming thirty days. Voting for the first month is open now and will close at the end of May. There has been a good voter turnout so far, thanks to everyone who has contributed. If you haven't voted, it only takes 20 seconds, it is fully anonymous and you do not need to sign up to anything. You can vote here. The Community Fund will go live on the 1st June 2019 and we will give you a further announcement regarding this.

Assertive, Intrepid, Balanced & Defensive Funds

We have completed our reallocation for this month. A heavier weighting has been given to TRON, ICON, EOS and LINK due to important upcoming events in June for each. As usual, we maintain a set allocation to stable coins to protect against any sudden downturns in the market. There appears to have been a glitch in the GV platform last month, with two of our funds showing a sudden sharp drop in profit on April 23rd, as shown below. We are not sure why this happened (possibly something to do with reallocation which occurred a few days prior). The screenshot is taken from our Defensive fund which has an 80% stable coin backing, so it is quite strange that the fund shows a sudden drop of 25% like this. Regardless, this does not reflect the actual value of the fund which grew steadily over the course of the month.

We hope you enjoyed this update. We'll be in touch soon with the results of The Community Fund poll.

With Bitcoin Halving a Year Away, 60% Think Price Will Go Up From Here

Bitcoin halving, one of the most anticipated events throughout the entire cryptocurrency community is estimated to be 365 days from now. As it closes in, a new Twitter poll reveals that the overwhelming majority is entirely bullish on Bitcoin’s price going forward.

Bitcoin Halving 365 Days From Now

Bitcoin halving, the event which will slash the mining block reward in half, is estimated to be exactly one year from today. At present, miners receive 12.5 BTC whenever a block is mined and by this time next year, this number will be reduced to 6.25 BTC.

As Bitcoinist has reported, there seems to be a direct correlation between Bitcoin halving and its price which is perhaps the thing everyone is mostly concerned with. Historical patterns show that Bitcoin prices tend to boom approximately one year after each previous halving.

There’s much sense to that, at least in theory – when the supply of Bitcoin is less than the demand for it, the price should rise. Hence, if the demand for bitcoin increases, or even more so – if it stays the same, while its supply declines, the price should go up.

‘Front Run, Up From Here’

2019 has so far turned out to be particularly good for Bitcoin. Year to date, its price has surged by more than 110 percent.

It’s exactly this increase that has caused many industry proponents to believe that the bull market has returned with full force. Most recently, Arthur Hayes, CEO at popular Bitcoin margin trading exchange BitMEX, reaffirmed this, saying that the “bull market is real.”

It also appears that this positive sentiment has spread out throughout the community in general.

Now that Bitcoin block rewards are exactly one year away from the halving, though, people are once again beginning to voice their opinions on where the price will go from here.

According to a new Twitter poll with over 1,900 votes at the time of this writing, most believe that the market will surge prior to the halving. Moreover, 26 percent of the participants believe that the price will lag, but it will increase after the halving takes place.

How will markets react to #bitcoin 2020 halving?

— planB (@100trillionUSD) May 20, 2019

And while there’s a whole year during which we’ll see how things will unfold, it’s also important to keep an eye on the price action right now. As _Bitcoinist _reported, the most recent pullback following Bitcoin’s rejection at $8,300 has a silver lining to it with a lot of promising signals supporting the breakout area of around $8,100.

Where will Bitcoin price in the next year? Let us know in the comments below!

market prepper

It's a rough start to the week for chipmakers as key semiconductor manufacturers cut off supplies to Huawei after the Trump administration added the Chinese company to a trade blacklist last week. Premarket movement: Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) -3.1%, Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) -1.8%; Xilinx (NASDAQ:XLNX) -2.7%, STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM) -7.4%, Micron (NASDAQ:MU) -3.7%. Google started the trade suspensions over the weekend, leaving Huawei with access only to the open-source version of Android. Nokia (NYSE:NOK), which usually benefits from the Chinese firm's woes, is up 4.1% premarket, while Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) shares are 1.6% higher.

Trade worries continue into new week

A move by the White House on Friday to remove steel import tariffs on Canada and Mexico added to optimism overnight, but U.S. stock index futures have now turned around, pointing to opening losses of 100 points for the DJIA. President Trump appears unwilling to offer a similar olive branch to Beijing, saying that any agreement had to be weighted in America's favor and couldn't be a "50-50" proposition, as the Huawei blacklist added to trade concerns. Risk-off sentiment was also seen due to the current tensions in the Gulf region, with a weekend tweet in which Trump threatened "the official end of Iran."

Powell speaks at Atlanta Fed conference

High on the agenda this evening is a keynote speech from Fed Chair Jerome Powell at the Atlanta Fed's annual Financial Markets Conference, entitled "Mapping the Financial Frontier: What does the next decade hold?" Investors are also likely to monitor a flurry of other speakers today including Philly Fed President Patrick Harker and Vice Chair Richard Clarida. Ahead of the events, the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note was up 1 bps at around 2.4015, while the yield on the 30-year Treasury bond was also higher at around 2.8307.

OPEC+ seen keeping output cut plans

Crude futures climbed as high as 1.7% to $63.96/bbl overnight after Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih indicated there was consensus among OPEC and allied oil producers to drive down crude inventories "gently," although markets remain "fragile." "This second half, our preference is to maintain production management to keep inventories on their way declining gradually, softly but certainly declining towards normal levels," he told a news conference following a ministerial OPEC+ panel in Jeddah. Concerns about Iranian supply also gave prices a boost.

Australia markets applaud Morrison victory

Australia's benchmark S&P/ASX 200 rose to an 11-year high as Prime Minister Scott Morrison and the Liberal-led conservative government claimed a surprise victory at national elections. The index climbed 1.7% to 6,476, boosted by bank, coal miner, property and healthcare stocks. Those were among the sectors most affected by the campaign of the opposition Labor Party, which had pledged to take strong action on climate change and property tax loopholes.

A 'bold' offer for Brexit deal support

Theresa May has pledged to set out a "new and improved" Brexit deal next month as she attempts to put together a cross-party coalition of MPs to finally pass her Withdrawal Agreement Bill. The "bold offer" is expected to include new proposals to uphold EU standards of workers' rights and environmental protection to win over some Labour MPs despite the collapse of cross-party talks last week. May is also holding renewed talks with Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist party to see whether she can overcome their opposition.

Is USMCA closer to ratification?

Canada will move "full steam ahead" to ratify USMCA, Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Saturday, a day after the U.S. agreed to lift tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. While several U.S. Democrats applauded removal of the tariffs, some said the new North American trade pact was not yet ready for their support. "House Democrats continue to have a number of substantial concerns related to labor, environment, enforcement, and access to affordable medicines provisions. Those issues still need to be remedied," said U.S. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal.

Latest 737 MAX blow for Boeing

Boeing (NYSE:BA) has acknowledged it had to correct flaws in its 737 MAX flight simulator software used to train pilots after recently discovering that they couldn't accurately replicate the difficult conditions created by a malfunctioning MCAS anti-stall system, which played a role in both the Ethiopian and Lion Air disasters. The company did not indicate when it first became aware of the problem, and whether it informed regulators, but its statement marked the first time Boeing admitted there was a software design flaw linked to the 737 MAX. BA -1% premarket.

More Turkish F-35 drama

The U.S. will "sooner or later" have to face reality and understand that Turkey's purchase of Russian S-400 systems is a done deal, President Tayyip Erdogan said, adding that Ankara would jointly produce the next generation S-500 system with Moscow. American officials have called Turkey's planned purchase "deeply problematic," saying it would risk its F-35 partnership because it would compromise the jets, made by Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT). "They (the U.S.) are passing the ball around in the midfield now, showing some reluctance," Erdogan declared. "But sooner or later, we will receive the F-35s. (The U.S.) not delivering them is not an option."

Next steps for T-Mobile-Sprint deal

Following talks with the FCC, T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS) and Sprint (NYSE:S) are planning to announce commitments to the U.S. government within days that include asset sales and rural-service guarantees to help secure regulatory approval for their $26.5B merger, Bloomberg reports. Among them: The sale of one of their prepaid brands, a three-year buildout of their 5G network and a reiterated pledge not to raise prices while the network is being constructed. The deal has stoked concerns of reduced competition in the wireless industry because the number of major players would fall from four to three.

[Newbie Monday] Week of Monday, May 20, 2019

Welcome to the Newbie Monday Weekly thread at /r/bitcoinmarkets!

This is a weekly thread where you can ask any basic questions related to bitcoin trading without shame or embarrassment.

Some rules:

  • First and foremost, check out the links on the subreddit bar on the right as well as our Wiki for answers to common questions and good reading material on basic guides, strategies and indicators.

  • There are no questions too stupid, as long as they are about what to do and how to do it in bitcoin trading. If you don't like a question being asked - you don't have to answer it.

  • Be respectful, no name-calling.

  • Try to source your answers or support with chart examples, links, etc where possible.

  • This is not a a thread to ask rhetorical questions about the state of bitcoin. "With the halvening coming up, isn't it stupid not to buy every dip?" or "With only 2.7TPS how can bitcoin support a global economy" are better questions for the weekly fundamental thread.

Weekly news review (May 11-17)

Good morning everyone! How's Monday going for you so far?

As usual, let's take a look at last week's news highlights in more detail.

https://i.redd.it/qvn9g72rgbz21.png

South Korean electronics giant Samsung is planning to bring cryptocurrency and blockchain features to more phones across its Galaxy range.

Citing a press release from Samsung, Business Korea reported on Tuesday that the firm would make its digital wallet app available even on lower-cost models and will further expand the crypto features to more jurisdictions.

The Samsung Blockchain Wallet is currently only available on Samsung’s recently launched flagship phone range, the Galaxy S10. The S10 additionally comes with blockchain features such as digital signing and decentralized apps (dapps), which the report appears to suggest may also be added across the Galaxy range.

eBay has denied rumors that it is going to start accepting cryptocurrency as a payment method, according to a Bloomberg report on May 14.

Speculation has been mounting since the e-commerce giant took out ads at the Consensus conference in New York City. One of the billboards said:

“Virtual Currency. It’s happening on eBay.”

But Sunayna Tuteja, the company’s head of digital assets, told Bloomberg:

“Currently we’re not. We have what we call paperMoney, which is what our clients can try for trading strategies. It was a simulation. So there was no actual execution.”

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has announced that it is back online after completing a security upgrade prompted by a recent hack.

Kicking off at 03:00 UTC Wednesday, the upgrade meant that all services were suspended during this period, according to a Binance support message. A two-hour extension to the upgrade was announced the next morning as some tasks took “longer than expected.”

Deposits and withdrawals have been offline since the hack, which Binance said saw 7,000 BTC (worth about $41 million at the time) stolen from the exchange’s hot wallet. Exchange customers would not be affected by the losses, Binance said.

Following the breach, CZ said in a blog post that the exchange would make “significant” changes related to its application programming interface (API), two-factor authentication (2FA) and withdrawal validation to reduce the risk of future hacks.

The exchange did not disclose full details regarding these efforts due to security concerns, but did say it’s also improving risk management and know-your-customer procedures to fight phishing, among other measures at the back-end.

Monday, May 13 —  Following a solid to break above the $7,400 mark earlier that day, bitcoin (BTC) has broken $8,000, with all top-20 cryptocurrencies trading in the green.

Apart from bitcoin, bitcoin cash (BCH), binance coin (BNB), IOTA (MIOTA), Tezos (XTZ), and Ontology (ONT) have also reported double-digit gains, from 10% to 17%, according to CoinMarketCap.

In a joint effort by several law enforcement agencies from 6 different countries, officials have dismantled a major global organized cybercrime network behind GozNym banking malware.
GozNym banking malware is responsible for stealing nearly $100 million from over 41,000 victims across the globe, primarily in the United States and Europe, for years.

GozNym was created by combining two known powerful Trojans—Gozi ISFB malware, a banking Trojan that first appeared in 2012 and Nymaim, a Trojan downloader that can also function as ransomware.
The United States has charged ten members of the GozNym criminal network, 5 of which were arrested during several coordinated searches conducted in Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
However, rest of the five defendants reside in Russia and are on the run, including one who developed the GozNym malware and leased it to other cybercriminals by advertising it on underground, Russian-language, online criminal forums.

MaxiMine Forms Strategic Partnership With Jinse Finance as Salon Series Hits Chengdu

https://i.redd.it/yc08sl4febz21.png

Distributed cloud-based pool mining platform, MaxiMine, is honoured to announce that it will be joining the incoming Jinse Salon Series as a strategic partner this May. MaxiMine’s CTO and Operations Executive (China), Mr. Yao Kunhua, has been invited to be a guest speaker at this event and will be speaking on the ecosystem of MaxiMine’s mining farm that promises to invigorate the crypto mining scene.

MaxiMine's CTO and Operations Executive (China) Mr Yao Kunhua

Mr. Yao is an early investor of Bitcoin and has always believed in its innate potential. As an expert on blockchain technology and its technical infrastructure, Mr. Yao is well-versed with fintech and has had seven years of experience in the blockchain field. Mr. Yao was also one of the earliest business partners of the mining pool, antpool.com, that was reported to be the largest Bitcoin mining pool in 2018 based on its Bitcoin network hash rate.

Following the successful launch of the Avalon Mining Rig 1st Generation in 2013, Mr. Yao started his own mining farm that has since expanded quickly in both scale and capacity. With multiple branches across the region such as in Inner Mongolia and Sichuan, its unrivalled growth has broadened the scope of its services and strengthened its research and development sector. Presently, the farm claims ownership of over 20 patents with many new proprietary technologies under its belt.

A common saying circulating in the crypto mining circle goes like this: “Success hinges entirely on the riding of the tide.”

To those familiar with the crypto mining industry, a rise in tidal waters is a cause for celebration as it signifies a greater electricity output with lowered utility costs and wider margins of profits.

During the wet season each year, it is a race among miners to scour the land for the lowest cost of electricity to ensure a smooth sailing ride into monetary victory. As the wet season is just right around the corner, what can people expect the outlook for miners to be this year?

The theme of the upcoming salon in Chengdu — Mining: Riding the Wave of the Market into the Future — seeks to address the above question and will delve deeper into the infrastructure and ecosystem behind a successful mining farm.
