Welcome to r/TravelInfluencers (INTRODUCTION & RULES)

Hi Travelers and welcome to the brand new r/TravelInfluencers

This is a subreddit for professional travel bloggers, vloggers, and social media influencers to discuss the industry, share strategies, ask questions, and connect with each other.

Our motto around here is: Don't Be One Of Those Influencers. You know the kind... that are only here to promote themselves and not add anything to the conversion. Don't be one of those influencers. There are plenty of other un-moderated subreddits for that.

This is a place to: Share resources, case studies, tips, and strategies to help your fellow travel professionals on Reddit, as well as ask questions about those topics. Make sure that there are no pay walls or subscribe-walls in between you and the content you share.

You are welcome to share resources from your own site, as long as 1) you share context along with it (no link-only posts), 2) you stick around to engage in the comments, and 3) they aren't the ONLY thing you post. This isn't your private RSS feed.

This is NOT a place to: Post your travel guides, photos, vlogs, travel advice, or ask for general travel information. Try r/travel or r/travelhacks for that. Please also no Follow4Follow threads or bogus "feedback" requests where the primary intention is just to get people to visit your site. Lastly, "How To Start A Travel Blog/Vlog" posts are strictly prohibited. Everyone here already has one and we don't want your bullshit 400 word guide to setting up a Wordpress site on Bluehost.

This is SOMETIMES a place for: Memes, shitposts, and humorous stories, as long as they are about the industry itself or life as a professional travel influencer, and not about general travel. I'll moderate these types of posts at my discretion.

I started this subreddit because there doesn't seem to be a great place on Reddit for travel professionals to connect. The subreddit r/travelblogging appears to be pretty dead, r/travelvog is just people sharing their videos without much engagement, and r/travelbloggers is private, so I started this public subreddit to see if we can fill the void here. I'm on Reddit almost every day and it'd be nice to use this platform to connect with other travel professionals in between reading about Bitcoin and looking at Office memes.

I run a private community called The Travel is Life Tribe which is active on Facebook, so I have a little bit of experience moderating forums, and I'll do my best to run a tight ship around here in order to keep the subreddit valuable for all members.

Questions? Feel free to drop them below. Let's grow this subreddit organically with great content and discussion. I'm sure there will be some hiccups along the way, but we're professionals, and we'll figure it out. Remember, don't be one of those influencers. Thanks for joining!

-PAUL

KiwiSaver Capital Monthly Update

The Momentum Fund

Bitcoin has continued to range-bound trade over the past month and has well and truly lost momentum. As you will know from our last update, BTC crossed below the 100 DMA in mid September but was still sitting above the 200 DMA. This meant that for our last reallocation we reduced our Bitcoin exposure to 50% and the remaining 49% was parked in a stable coin (ignoring the 1% GVT compulsory allocation). The beauty of our strategy has paid off here - the Momentum fund returned -6.25% in the past month, compared to a loss of -12.5% for funds which maintained a full Bitcoin allocation. Using a momentum strategy we have been able to avoid that additional 6.25% loss and preserved our capital.

In late September BTC also dropped below the 200 DMA. At the time of writing BTC is at $7937, under both the 100 DMA ($9829) and 200 DMA ($8812). Therefore, we will pull back to maximal stable coin exposure for the next month (and possibly longer). We know that when Bitcoin decides to fly it often does in spectacular fashion, so if Bitcoin can pick up some momentum in the next thirty days (signalled by a cross above the 200 DMA) then we will reallocate back to some BTC exposure. For now, we are playing defensively.

You can see the full Momentum Fund strategy here.

The Community Fund

Our newest fund pools the community's views on which two coins will perform the best over the subsequent thirty days. This month BTC and BNB have been chosen to make up the fund and are doing fairly dismally at the moment, -20%. There is still a third of the month left before the Community Fund's reallocation, so hopefully we can get back into black. Please be sure to vote for which coin you believe will perform the best in the month of November at the link below.

Voting for the November allocation is now open and can be found here.

Growth, Intrepid, Balanced & Defensive Funds

Our risk-staggered funds continue to perform strongly overall, but have had a lacklustre month. Reallocation of all funds has now occurred. Most funds will maintain a decent allocation to Bitcoin and the high market cap alts, while some smaller altcoins will get exposure due to important upcoming events this month such as TRX, NXS, XRP and ZEN.

Thanks to everyone who continues to trust their funds with us, and cheers to another successful month!

Yesterday, there was a downside extension in bitcoin below the $8,000 support area against the US Dollar. BTC price traded to a new monthly low at $7,915 and settled below the 100 hourly simple moving average. Recently, there was an upside correction above the $8,000 level. Moreover, the price recovered above the $8,020 level, plus the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the last decline from the $8,386 high to $7,915 low.

However, the upward move was capped by the $8,100 and $8,120 resistance levels. Besides, the price failed to test the 50% Fib retracement level of the last decline from the $8,386 high to $7,915 low. As a result, there was a fresh decline below $8,020. The price is now accelerating declines below the $8,000 level. It even broke the last swing low at $7,915 and traded to a new monthly low near $7,850.

The ZimDai Stack - A Technical Breakdown

Here we'll go over the "tech stack": the set of technologies that allows Dai to function and guarantees it will always be available in Zimbabwe.

Much of this isn't relevant to customers or even to agents, in terms of how it's used. This is more for those of us who need to know how something works before trusting it.

The short version is:

  • Cryptocurrency technology at the base
  • Ethereum, a particular cryptocurrency that enables "smart contracts"
  • Dai, a "stablecoin" built on Ethereum smart contracts
  • DAIHard, an unkillable entry/exit mechanism, also built on Ethereum smart contracts

Cryptocurrency

Most people have heard of Bitcoin, invented back in 2009. This was the first cryptocurrency. Since then, many more have been developed and the industry as a whole has matured greatly.

Generally, the drawbacks of cryptocurrency are: - Volatility: the value of any given cryptocurrency faces huge spikes and falls - Difficult to enter and exit - Not as simple to use as "regular money" - Lack of adoption (no one else is using it, so why should I?)

But there are some important benefits: - Global monetary system - Uncensorable - Unhackable - Resistant to regulation and litigation - No one controls it (like the Internet itself)

Cryptocurrency is a huge subject, and could fill several books. This article would be a good starting place to learn more.

Ethereum and Smart Contracts

Ethereum is a cryptocurrency that enables the operation of smart contracts. You can read more here, but the basic idea is this: a smart contract is a piece of code that lives at a specific Ethereum address. Like other addresses, this address can receive money.

When the smart contract receives money, it will do with the money whatever it was programmed to do. A simple example might be a "splitter" contract, that splits the money in half and sends it to two other addresses. Another example might be a simple time-lock contract, where it will hold the money and not allow withdrawals earlier than a month.

The most common use of this technology is to build a new coin without having to build the whole blockchain technology from scratch. In fact, as of January, 94 of the top 100 cryptocurrencies were actually built on top of Ethereum.

Because these smart contracts store and execute their code directly on the blockchain, technology built on them inherits many of the benefits of cryptocurrencies: unhackable, unstoppable, and resilient against regulation or goverment shut-downs.

Dai

Dai is another coin built on Ethereum, but with a particular advantage: it is pegged to the US Dollar, such that 1 Dai always equals 1 dollar. This is achieved not through a simple IOU system (such as TUSD and USDT use), but is has a transparent system that generates (or destroys) Dai to maintain the peg, which nobody owns and anyone can interact with. This effectively eliminates the general "volatility" issue most other cryptocurrencies have.

Here is an overview of how the system works. In the end, it incentivizes people to put at large amounts of collateral "behind" every Dai that is created, and if the price of ether falls, the system will begin liquidating this ether collateral to protect the value of the Dai. You can see some interesting statistics of the entire system, like total issued Dai and collateralization ratio, here.

If you have Metamask or another "Ethereum browser wallet" installed, with some ether in it, you can go here, deposit some ether to create a "CDP", and generate a smaller amount of Dai. At any time later, you can return the Dai to get your ether back. All of these rules of depositing/withdrawing/generating Dai are written in Ethereum smart contracts, meaning that it doesn't rely on some company or individual to keep running.

DAIHard

DAIHard is another system built on top of Ethereum smart contracts. But rather than being another cryptocurrency, this is a more "user-facing" app. Its purpose is simply to provide an unstoppable, global mechanism for a user with Dai to sell it for local currency, or for a user with local currency (and a small amount of Dai) to buy more Dai.

The tool is essentially a matchmaking platform, where Dai sellers can connect with Dai buyers, where they've agreed on a price, a local currency type, and a means of transferring the local currency. Even though you're dealing with a stranger, the system is built such that scams should always be harshly punished, and therefore should rarely ever be attempted.

Our launch post is a pretty good intro into what DAIHard does and why it's important in general, and this usage video should give a good picture of how it's actually used (although the interface has changed slightly since then). If you want to get technical about why the threat of burn exists, and how we can expect the whole thing to work, see the game theory post.

Finally, you can go see the app itself, but if you want to open or commit to any trades you'll need to install Metamask or some other web3 plugin.

The custodial middle ground / trade-off

Lets face it, storing bitcoins safely is still a pain for the average Joe and this still presents a hurdle for mainstream adoption. Until UI/UX improves to a level that all but eliminates this hurdle we will still contend with this issue, if it ever will. The average person just wants to log in with a username and password and see money with very little or no risk of it being gone (in the event that it is gone, there is some insurance). Custodial wallets have the risk of the providers just disappearing, seized or getting hacked. Non-custodial wallets means the owner has to think up ways to store the mnemonic seed; paper, metal, stone, encrypted file, brain?? Stress!!

I have a solution; still vague in my mind as I do not currently have the time or technical ability to pull this off. A second layer network built on top of bitcoin, lets call it Hunter. This will basically be a backup for seeds where seeds will be encrypted using a user's password and maybe another easily derived number and the cipher will be divided up and stored on other nodes on the network. The nodes to be stored on will be derived pseudo-randomly from the password (and the number) therefore each node will either not have a user's encrypted seed or will just have a very small part of the encrypted seed stored. The pseudo-random algorithm will give a different set of nodes if the number of nodes in the network changes from the time the user stored the encrypted seed.

Now if the user loses or forgets the seed, the user can get it back by scouring the network, of course, by paying other nodes a small amount of bitcoin to retrieve the portion of the encrypted seed (hunting). The trick here is to ensure that the pseudo-random sequence makes it more probable for a user who knows the password to contact far less nodes than an attacker who is engaging in a system wide hunt (brute forcing) thus paying far less bitcoin to nodes to retrieve the seed than the attacker.

Problems

  • Password re-use
  • Nodes can lie they don't have the data requested even though they do ensuring you come back and pay more
  • Nodes can provide false data ensuring you come back and pay more
  • An attacker can infect all nodes on the network wiping out data on all nodes
  • A well financially resourced entity can buy out all the nodes

There are other problems but I cannot remember them now. I assume employing RAID and smart contracts will minimize or solve some of these problems.

Also if someone will be kind enough to drop a formula to calculate the security of your backup on this network based on the number of nodes in it.

How long does it take for my balance to unlock?

Your balance is unlocked after 10 confirmations (which means 10 mined blocks). A block is mined approximately every two minutes on the Monero network, so that would be around 20 minutes.

How can I prove that I sent a payment?

The fastest and most direct way is by using the ExploreMonero blockchain explorer. You will need to recover the transaction key from your wallet (complete guide for GUI / CLI).

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are dozens of exchanges that trade Monero against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Check out the list on CoinMarketCap and choose the option that suits you best.

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with fiat?

  • Kraken (USD and EUR): old-school, decent exchange. They might require your documents for verification and approval of your account.
  • LocalMonero: peer-to-peer exchange. They have pretty much everything as a payment method and they support hundreds of fiat options.

How can I quickly exchange my Monero (XMR) for Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are multiple ways to exchange your Monero for Bitcoin, but first of all, I'd like to remind you that if you really want to do your part for Monero, one of the simplest ways is to get in touch with your merchant/service provider and request for it to accept Monero directly as payment. Ask the service provider to visit the official website and our communication channels if he or she needs help with system integration.

That being said, the community has been recommending two services in particular, XMR.TO and MorphToken. These services are only recommendations and are operated by entities outside the control of the Monero Project. Be diligent.

How do I mine Monero? And other mining questions.

The correct place to ask questions and discuss the Monero mining scene is in the dedicated subreddit r/MoneroMining. That being said, you can find a list of pools and available mining software in the GetMonero.org website.

2. Wallet: CLI & GUI

Why I can't see my balance? Where is my XMR?

Before any action there are two things to check:

  1. Are you using the latest available version of the wallet? A new version is released roughly every 6 months, so make sure you're using the current release (compare the release on GetMonero.org with your wallet's version on Settings, under Debug info).
  2. Is your wallet fully synchronized? If it isn't, wait the sync to complete.

Because Monero is different from Bitcoin, wallet synchronization is not instant. The software needs to synchronize the blockchain and use your private keys to identify your transactions. Check in the lower left corner (GUI) if the wallet is synchronized.

You can't send transactions and your balance might be wrong or unavailable if the wallet is not synced with the network. So please wait.

If this is not a sufficient answer for your case and you're looking for more information, please see this answer on StackExchange.

How do I upgrade my wallet to the newest version?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

Why does it take so long to sync the wallet [for the first time]?

You have decided to use Monero's wallet and run a local node. Congratulations! You have chosen the safest and most secure option for your privacy, but unfortunately this has an initial cost. The first reason for the slowness is that you will need to download the entire blockchain, which is considerably heavy (+70 GB) and constantly growing. There are technologies being implemented in Monero to slow this growth, however it is inevitable to make this initial download to run a full node. Consider syncing to a device that has an SSD instead of an HDD, as this greatly impacts the speed of synchronization.

Now that the blockchain is on your computer, the next time you run the wallet you only need to download new blocks, which should take seconds or minutes (depending on how often you use the wallet).

I don't want to download the blockchain, how can I skip that?

The way to skip downloading the blockchain is connecting your wallet to a public remote node. You can follow this guide on how to set it up. You can find a list of public remote nodes on MoneroWorld.

Be advised that when using a public remote node you lose some of your privacy. A public remote node is able to identify your IP and opens up a range for certain attacks that further diminish your privacy. A remote node can't see your balance and it can't spend your XMR.

How do I restore my wallet from the mnemonic seed or from the keys?

To restore your wallet with the 25 word mnemonic seed, please see this guide.

To restore your wallet with your keys, please see this guide.

3. Wallet: Ledger

How do I generate a Ledger Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check this page for the GUI instructions, and this page for the CLI instructions.

4. Nodes

How can my local node become a public remote node?

If you want to support other Monero users by making your node public, you can follow the instructions on MoneroWorld, under the section "How To Include Your Node On Moneroworld".

How can I connect my node via Tor?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

Brave Browser for Mobile: Your privacy and security are verified

A new way to surf the Internet can also turn it over. Brave Brower - from co-founder of Firefox Brendan Aich - offers cross-platform compatibility, speed, security, tabs without distractions and more.

Why use Brave? Brave Browser has unique systems to protect your privacy, reduce download time and generate revenue for users by displaying content from Brave's own secure ad network. Once its network collapses, the Eich team will share revenue between users, publishers and the ad network using the following model: users get 10-15%, which they can convert into bitcoins and send to their favorite websites. Publishers get 55%. The brave and his advertising network gets 15% each.

So how does Brave on Mobile cope with its competitors such as Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Puffin? This article discusses Brave's features, performance, security and privacy.

Where did Brave come from?

After purchasing Chris Lacy's Link Bubble Browser (Android), the Eich team discovered the source code and began rebuilding it, along with a completely different version for the PC.

We wrote about Link Bubble

before. Although Link Bubble hasn't been stable on any of my mobile devices, Brave iteration ensures stable performance. It is currently one of my favorite apps. My favorite use: it works great for opening tabs when reading RSS

(FeedMe is the best RSS reader for offline use on Android

). But there are many other applications, such as opening web links in an email, spreadsheet or PDF.

Platform availability

Brave Browser for Android, iOS, Linux, Macintosh and Windows (Windows Vista or later). It is also fully open source. Here are the download links:

Download: Android

Download: IOS

Brave is also available on the desktop (we wrote about Brave on the desktop

). For desktop Linux users, you need to compile the source code yourself. It seems that there are no .DEB files available for installation.

Features of a brave browser

The mobile application differs significantly from the desktop version. Instead of opening links in the foreground, Brave opens a Facebook-style chat roomthat looks like a bubble.

Clicking on it opens the browser. Pressing, holding and sliding it to the left bubble will share information with Google+. Clicking on the bubble to the right will open the content using any application you want. Sliding it to the bubble marked "X" removes the page. Users can configure any of these settings, so if you prefer to use Twitter or Facebook, all you have to do is install the default application in the Brave Settings menu.

Bubble up

Some of its competitors in the floating bubble browser market include Javelin Browser and Flynx. Two similar browsers are Firefox and Snap Browser [no longer available]. Both offer background loading tabs, known as queuing tabs

This feature should be enabled in Firefox, and Snap Browser is no longer being developed (although the application is still available).

Some other features include themes and incognito mode. Customizable Brave themes, including night mode (which is great for AMOLED screens)

). For those concerned about privacy, users may choose to activate incognito mode, which completely prevents cookies from being stored.

On the other hand, Brave does not offer image compression - and it is the only browser that does not offer this option. For people with limited budgets, you can use Chrome, Firefox (with a compression extension), Opera or Puffin.

Octane 2.0: JavaScript

Google has developed the Octane test to speed up JavaScript development. The test is fully focused on running JavaScript. Theoretically, Chrome should outperform its competitors in this field.

https://i.redd.it/acav3foffgt31.png

In fact, Puffin dominates the performance of JavaScript with incredible profits. Brave's performance drops dramatically at the bottom. Although all browsers look bad compared to Puffin.

RoboHornet: Multispectrum

RoboHornet tests browsers using a set of tests, from frame rendering to animated GIF files. It generates a "normalized" score, where 100 is average. Any results above 100 mean better than average performance. Remember that mobile browsers run on slower hardware, so their results should be below average.

I can't explain it, but Puffin's taking the competition away. Other browsers are roughly the same in performance.

Bmark: HTML5

Bmark measures the ability of a browser to display HTML5 3D content. It is also a pretty good indicator of browser performance in HTML5.

https://i.redd.it/k03y85whfgt31.png

Chrome wins by a long shot, although Opera and Puffin offer decent numbers. Brave and Firefox raise the rear.

Test MakeUseOf.com

It's a real test. I simply download MakeUseOf.com three times in each browser and use the stopwatch to determine how long the site should take to load. The best result is used. MakeUseOf uses a lot of JavaScript, so (theoretically) Puffin should load the site faster than the rest. The brave Browser should be the last to arrive dead.

As the numbers show, I was half right. Puffin was the leader in all browsers. However, Brave was in second place, which is contrary to expectations. The results show that Brave's advertising replacement strategy accelerates the work with the browser, as a large amount of download time requires a large amount of JavaScript.

Is Brave Browser safe?

I checked the security and privacy of all browsers using two tools: Panopticlick and Perfect Privacy. For those who are interested, we have compiled a list of tools that are useful for finding security vulnerabilities

Brave offers adequate, albeit problematic, user privacy. On the one hand, this is tantamount to Opera and Chrome in preventing unethical user tracking policies. But it is vulnerable to mask removal even when combined with a virtual proxy network (VPN).

Cookie tracking: Brave stops certain types of unethical cookie tracking

All but one of the browsers tested also stops tracking users. The dead end is the only one who fails.

Invisible trackingAdvertisers can track users if they open their emails through a so-called "invisible tracker". Brave Browser passes this test, which Puffin and Chrome fail. Opera and Firefox are also tested.

Third parties who respect "Don't Track": Brave stops cookies from companies that adhere to ethical standards. Puffin and Firefox (Firefox added DoNotTrack last year) have the ability to enable cookies from the Do Not Track list. The rest (to the best of my knowledge) is not.

Fingerprints in the browser: All browsers do not pass a fingerprint check on the browser. Fingerprints are also the least reliable method of identifying users, although they should apply to all Internet users.

https://i.redd.it/x5oei75qfgt31.png

Brave Panopticlick browser results

https://i.redd.it/3z6w9vvrfgt31.png

IP WebRTC leak: WebRTC

Vulnerability of leakage is a serious privacy issue affecting most browsers except Firefox (use the Happy Bonobo extension if you are a Firefox user). Brave is exposed to leaks. Even most VPNs do not protect against this. If you don't know what a VPN is

Think about reading about the best VPN services around. I recommend CryptoStorm, although Private Internet Access (PIA) is also a good (and inexpensive) choice.

What's the best mobile browser?

It depends on what you need. For those looking for a browser that opens tabs quickly, it will be difficult to find a great alternative to Brave. If you need to compress images to save mobile data, all other browsers offer the best option. If you need the speed of Brave in the real world, the speed is good. In terms of privacy, Brave is the best.
