Greenidge Bitcoins Mined Q1 - Info From the S-4
The number of bitcoins mined in the quarter ended March 31, 2021 was approximately 212 compared with approximately 282 bitcoins in the quarter ended March 31, 2020. I do not know the data from Q2, but would expect that this info should be released before merger in Q3 via press release.
Greenidge’s mining fleet grew from an average of approximately 4,200 miners in the quarter ended March 31, 2020 to an average of approximately 7,100 miners in the quarter ended March 31, 2021. Despite this growth in the number of miners, Greenidge saw a decrease in bitcoins mined quarter over quarter.
Several factors impacted the rate at which bitcoin is mined, including an increase in overall network difficulty (a measure of how difficult it is to earn a block reward) of 57% during this period, as well as halving event which occurred in May 2020.
The halving event reduced the block reward from 12.5 bitcoin per block to 6.25 bitcoin per block, effectively reduced the total bitcoins mined across the entire bitcoin network by half. This halving event, which occurs every four years, paired with an increase in network difficulty led to a decline in the number of bitcoins mined by Greenidge for the quarter ended March 31, 2021 as compared with the previous quarter.
The number of bitcoins mined in the year ended December 31, 2020 was approximately 1,162 and is not comparable to 2019 as Greenidge had only began generating cryptocurrency mining revenue in a pilot phase launched in mid-2019 as compared to a full year of operations in 2020.

Advice on filing tax for mined cryptocurrency as someone who hasn't filed once in their life?
US High schooler here. I've only just recently started to use my computer to casually mine small amounts of altcoin (coins that aren't bitcoin), and have just found multiple resources stating that mined coins need to be taxed as a capital gain based on income. Thing is, I don't make any income, plus I've never had to file taxes in my life, so I need advice on where to start out and if I have to pay taxes for this small of an amount. I read that holding these coins for more than a year as a dependent would result in me paying 0% capital gain tax. Is this true? I kinda doubt it.
I only have like 10 bucks in crypto and haven't traded at all as I know it is a taxable event; Is it a good idea to keep track of transactions and the price of the coins at that time? How would / should I report coins that fall and rise and value as time goes on? I appreciate your help, thanks.
Helium FAQs
Q: Can someone please provide an example of how the Helium network is being used?
Q: How does Amazon Sidewalk stack up to Helium?
A: https://twitter.com/amirhaleem/status/1391440448107913216 (straight from Helium's CEO)
Q: What dictates the challenge process?/What determines the number of challenges?
A: https://docs.helium.com/blockchain/proof-of-coverage/. Note: the PoC challenge interval can change. Per the discord announcement on 6/3/2021, "Last week we reduced the PoC challenge interval to 480 blocks from 240 blocks. At the target block time of 60s, this should mean that a Hotspot will be targeted every 8 hours (on average). However, due to slow block times, this interval could be as much as 12 hours or more. It won't be uncommon to go a day or more without a single beacon, as PoC challenges can fail for a number of reasons. The rewards should be the same per beacon, but could take much longer to arrive. This will also mean you witness less often, as the Hotspots around you are also beaconing less frequently."
Q: What is the consensus group?
A: https://docs.helium.com/blockchain/consensus-protocol/. Note: With the approval and pending implementation of HIP25, the current consensus protocol will be changing.
Q: How can I tell if I am in the consensus group?
A: In your activity feed, you will see a red box labelled "Consensus Election". Additionally, you can view the current consensus group members here. To reiterate, please note that the consensus protocol is changing, as mentioned above.
Q: Which miner is the best?/Which miner should I buy?/Which manufacturer should I buy my miner from?
A: It really does not matter which manufacturer you purchase your miner from, as they all provide the same functionality. At this point, the only variability among manufacturers is shipping times and customer service levels. One caveat to note: Kerlink miners cannot perform consensus functions. Thus, if you purchase a miner from Kerlink, your miner will not be eligible to participate in the current consensus protocol. However, given that the odds of being selected to the consensus protocol are quite low and the fact that the consensus protocol will be changing (see above), I would not place too much weight on this in the decision-making process.
Q: How can I optimize my setup?
A: https://kyk13.com/a-rough-guide-to-helium-hotspot-placement/
Q: Where can I buy the hardware needed (antenna, outdoor enclosure, etc.) to optimize my setup?
A: RAKWireless and ParleyLabs have great Helium-specific storefronts. The ancillary equipment needed will likely include a coax cable to connect the antenna and the outdoor enclosure (length and connectors are not one-size-fits-all, so you will need to check the documentation of your antenna and your enclosure to determine the proper cable to order), a mast for the antenna, mounting equipment, and grounding equipment. My hotspot is mounted to my chimney and I used this equipment as part of my setup.
Q: My hotspot is relayed. What does this mean?/How can I fix this?
A: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5_0Ln8zo0s
Q: How much will I earn?
A: This is far too broad of a question. To simplify things, a hotspot's earnings can be thought of as a function of how many other hotspots can witness your hotspot and how many other hotspots that your hotspot can witness. A hotspot's elevation (be it natural elevation or manufactured elevation via a mast or mount), line of sight to other hotspots, and proximity to other hotspots are the primary variables that will drive witness activity. Additionally, your hotspot's "reward scaling" (detailed in the PoC docs) will impact earnings stemming from your hotspot's beacons. I'd recommend using the coverage map to scope out your area and a tool like hotspotrf to get an estimate of what your coverage range may be (emphasis on the word estimate)
Q: What will the earnings be like in the future?
A: At the macro level, earnings will be down across the board, as a result of both network growth and the biennial rewards halving (see HIP20).
Q: Am I too late?
A: This is far too broad of a question. Are you too late to become a millionaire in a short year's time? Probably, unless you plan on deploying hundreds of hotspots with optimal setups. Are you too late to earn passive income while helping build decentralized networks? No, you are absolutely not too late.
Q: What to do if my neighbor sets up a hotspot in my hexagon?
A: This one always gives me a bit of a chuckle. It's not your hexagon. You don't have eminent domain over it. Your neighbor shares the same right to deploy a hotspot as you do.
Q: How did you hear about Helium?/How did you find out about Helium?
A: Obviously, this answer is going to vary by person. However, I like to plug Fred Wilson any chance I can get. Fred is the co-founder of the VC firm Union Square Ventures. Some of the firm's biggest hits include Twitter, Etsy, Coinbase, and MongoDB. I started reading his blog in 2015 but I certainly wish I had been a reader in 2011 (the first time he blogged about Bitcoin). I made it a point to read his blog daily, to give myself a shot at the "next big thing." When I read his blog post about Helium in November of 2019, Helium was a no-brainer investment for me. Quite simply, Fred is the GOAT.
Q: Where can I buy or sell HNT?
A: CoinMarketCap has a list of centralized HNT markets, although it may not be exhaustive.
Q: How can I convert my HNT to USD?
A: First, you'll have to transfer your HNT from your wallet to an exchange that lists HNT (see above). Next, I'd recommend exchanging HNT for USD directly if possible to minimize transaction costs and the number of taxable events created. If a direct exchange for USD is not possible, your best bet would be to exchange HNT for ETH, transfer said ETH to Coinbase, and exchange said ETH for USD. This would likely result in higher transaction costs and two taxable events (HNT --> ETH and ETH --> USD).
Q: What are the tax implications of mining HNT?
A: This is far too broad of a question, as tax laws differ based on your jurisdiction. In the United States, cryptocurrency earned from mining is treated as ordinary income. In terms of reporting, the taxpayer must decide whether to report mining income as hobby income or self-employment income (see IRS guidelines). Self-employment income is reported on Schedule C of Form 1040. The main benefit of reporting as self-employment income (as opposed to hobby income) is that you can directly offset mining income with mining expenses. This may include the cost of the hotspot, the cost of other hardware used as part of your setup (antenna, mast, mounting equipment, grounding equipment, installation costs, etc.), the cost of the Internet that the hotspot is connected to, and the cost of custody. When I say custody, I am referring to how you "store" your HNT. If you custody your HNT on the Helium mobile app, you can deduct a portion of your mobile phone cost. If you custody your HNT on a hardware wallet like a Ledger, you could deduct the cost of the Ledger. (obligatory disclaimer: not tax advice, consult a tax professional)
Q: What are the tax implications of selling HNT or converting HNT to another cryptocurrency?
A: Again, this is far too broad of a question, as tax laws differ based on your jurisdiction. In the United States, cryptocurrency is treated as property and any taxable events incurred by exchanging cryptocurrency are subject to capital gains tax rules (obligatory disclaimer again: not tax advice, consult a tax professional)
A few other thoughts:
- Some of the comments regarding the hotspot hosting companies like Emrit, Hostify, etc. have gotten a bit out of line. Emrit has been purchasing and deploying hotspots since August of 2019, well before the HNT token even had a USD price attached to it and well before mining HNT was even remotely popular. They took on a tremendous amount of risk during the primitive stages of this project. The network would not be what it is today without them. Is there a valid concern about centralization? Yes, this likely warrants some civil discourse. However, simply bashing Emrit because you've deemed their earnings sharing agreements unfavorable is completely uncalled for. Emrit isn't showing up to its hosts' doorsteps demanding that they put a hotspot on their property. These hosts are acting on their own volition.
- There's a ton of great information on Reddit, Discord, Twitter, and Helium's own website, as evidenced by many of the links included here. Don't be afraid to ask a question, but people are more willing to help if you can demonstrate that you've at least rolled your sleeves up and started digging.
- One other point on taxes. My day job is in accounting and I am in the process of launching a tax firm specializing in cryptocurrency. Feel free to DM me with tax questions.
Did you get airdropped a random token that you have never heard of before? Well here are the main reasons why this may have occurred.
A lot of people recently are asking why they have been airdropped a random token that they have never heard of before so I thought I'd try to shine some light on this phenomenon.
I'd just like to begin by saying that in the event that this does happen, the best thing to do is leave the tokens in your wallet. Don't trade them or attempt to send them anywhere just forget about them, it does not jeopardise the security of your wallet in almost all cases.
So there are 4 main reasons why this may have occurred:
- A person/group is attempting a dusting attack. (Relatively unlikely)
- A token is trying to boost its number of holders in order to make it look more appealing to new investors. (Highly likely)
- Almost free advertising. (Highly likely)
- A mistake. (Extremely unlikely)
1. A person/ group is attempting a dusting attack.
A dusting attack is an attack in which a trace amount of crypto, called dust, is sent to thousands and sometimes even hundreds of thousands of wallet addresses. This attack is deployed in order to track these addresses with the hope of “un-masking” or de-anonymizing them. Dust is found most commonly in Binance and Ethereum smart contracts, but it can essentially happen on any blockchain. Attackers use dusting attacks in order to try to identify those with large cryptocurrency holdings.
The attackers then follow the movement of the funds originated from the dust transaction and combine the affected addresses into one such "identity". Then, using additional information from other sources, the attackers can try some educated guessing to figure out the real identities behind those addresses. Still, this does not give an attacker access to the funds held by an address. It only allows them to maybe know who the owners of the addresses are.
The absolute best thing to do when you receive unwanted dust in your wallet is to leave it be and forget about it. The attackers want you to send the tokens elsewhere or try to trade it in order to gain extra information on you, the wallet holder. By doing absolutely nothing with the tokens you are giving the attacker no extra information which will halt the attack.
2. A token is trying to boost its number of holders in order to make it look more appealing to new investors.
This is especially common for Binance and Ethereum smart contracts and is used as a way to deceive new and prospective investors. The team behind this token will airdrop their token to thousands of random addresses in order to boost holder numbers, and make it appear like the token is actually much larger than it is. They will then probably go on to boast about how many X thousands of people are "hodling strong" and use it as an incentive for prospective investors.
This is completely harmless towards your crypto and your wallet and again, the best thing to do is just leave the dust and forget about it.
3. Almost free advertising.
Dusting is also used as an extremely cheap form of advertising. They will often airdrop thousands of addresses an amount of their token equivalent to $0.00001. They do this so that people will check their wallets, see this new mysterious token, and then go and check it out. They also do it so that people will post in forums and groups saying "did anyone else get X token airdropped", which again, is almost free advertising.
Again, this is completely harmless and the best thing to do is just leave it and forget about it.
4. A mistake.
This is so unlikely that I thought I might not even bother to mention it but I might as well. There is always the slim chance that someone sent their tokens/coins to a wrong address and that wrong address just happened to be yours. If it is a large sum of money it is highly unlikely that it is any of the previously mentioned things in this post, and you will have to decide for yourself what you want to do with your new found wealth.
If it is a tiny amount of $ it is almost definitely one of the things I have mentioned above, so again, leave it and forget about it, it will not cause you any harm.
So that's it I suppose. Just thought I'd try to shed some light on the situation because of the increase in posts/comments on the topic.
Here are some extra resources about dusting attacks as I only gave a very brief summary:

- Paypal moving away from the “walled garden” model. This is decentralization teaching the legacy institutions a lesson. https://www.coindesk.com/paypal-will-let-customers-withdraw-crypto-exec-says
- Charles is interviewed on Yahoo Finance where he explained: 1) how the lack of an obvious decentralized governance system in ETH and BTC will cripple their efforts as they attempt to scale and the founders/core developers start losing prominence, 2) the ADA EUTXO system is vastly more scaleable with it’s local state being so much more amenable to sharding than ETH’s global state system, 3) Cardano has a high willingness to bring on users in hypergrowth areas like Africa where ETH seems to have little interest, and 4) ETH does not seem to be as highly concerned with interoperability which might become highly valuable in the future. https://twitter.com/YahooFinance/status/1397593275826151424
- Cardano 360 is tomorrow. Don’t miss it if you want to hear about all the awesome things happening with Alonzo (smart contracts), Hydra (scalability), and everything else! https://twitter.com/InputOutputHK/status/1397549347592675338
- The May Cardano 360 was yesterday and we had lots of updates including the Color Coding for the different stages of the testnet! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SS33gRj9JYE
- Alonzo “Blue” Era Testnet (through mid June; <50 user cohort) will include the basic functionality of the system for testing basic contracts . Initially the SPOs will be included, then some of the Plutus Pioneers will be allowed in, then a few of the outside development firms (Plutus Partners). The Plutus Partners will be working on specific areas including oracles, DEXs, stablecoins, NFTs, and DeFi. This will produce code and documentation that will be publicly available.
- Alonzo “White” Era Testnet (mid June to mid July; <500 user cohort) will add more Plutus Pioneers and more functionality. They will develop various dApps and there will be interaction on the user side of these dApps. They will do some benchmarking at this stage.
- The Alonzo Hard Fork Combinator Event requires a lot of different pieces come together at the same time. But, this is not their first rodeo and they have a lot of experience with this from the ITN, Shelley, and etc.
- Alonzo “Purple” Era Tesnet (mid July to mid August; fully public) will involve a full public network with all of the Plutus pioneers, the Rosetta Api to the exchanges, Daedalus, hardware wallets, graphQL, and full functionality. The purpose of this phase will be optimization.
- Alonzo “Red” Era Tesnet (August; a very short phase) will involve a new network where they can test scalability and stability.
- Alonzo “Black” Era Tesnet (August; a very short phase) will be the final public testnet where they will ensure they have their candidate mainnet releases ready to launch on the mainnet.
- They are committed to making sure there is a very large group of people who are familiar with using the Alonzo testnet by the time the mainnet launches.
- Alonzo Mainnet (August-September). It’s looking like Alonzo mainnet launch was positioned in very late August through September in the infographics. That makes me assume there is a chance of August, much better chance of September, and also some chance of October or later. This is blockchain development after all. Also, we’ve waited years. Why care about a few weeks?
- There will be another Plutus Pioneers Cohort later this summer.
- Marlowe Run will be a browser product that can run on mobile or desktop. It can be linked to your wallet and be used to run Cardano smart contracts simultaneously on a distributed basis across multiple user browsers. The user interface is light years ahead of anything we saw in Marlowe Meadow or the Marlowe Playground simulations. It will include a library of off-the-shelf contracts.
- There will be a Marlowe Webinar on June 3. Register here: https://webinar.marlowe-finance.io/
- The ERC-20 converter was looking very intuitive and seamless in the new demo. It should be on the testnet in June.
- Manuel Chakravarty gave a big update on Hydra (layer 2 scaling). Hydra will not require that the base layer be modified since it will be implemented via Plutus smart contracts. Hydra is actually a collection of protocols including Hydra Head and Hydra Tail. Hydra Head is a symmetric protocol where multiple participants will be online simultaneously for the whole period of the head exchanging messages. Hydra Tail is an asymmetric protocol involving a high performance server and many clients that may be mobile and could be offline for large portions of the tail’s existence. There will also be “inter head & tail networking” which will allow for a network of heads and tails. They have a published research paper on Hydra Head. They are currently writing the Hydra Tail paper.
- Hydra is distinguished from other layer 2 protocols by its isomorphic properties. This means you will be able to run any smart contract that works on the base layer in a Hydra Head! This is very special. We won’t need special purpose contracts built out just for layer 2. There are some big implications to this. Since a Hydra Head is essentially just a Plutus smart contract, this means you can run a Hydra Head inside another Hydra Head. It’s turtles all the way down, guys. It sounds like they can do this iteratively as much as they want.
- Aggelos also gave a good presentation on the importance of “skin in the game” in resource based consensus protocols (both proof-of-work and proof-of-stake) and its effect on promotion or discouragement of centralization. He explained how Ouroboros has built-in safeguards to prevent centralization including the K parameter (currently at 500) which caps total rewards per pool and the alpha parameter (currently at 0.3) which splits rewards into a 77% piece and a 23% piece. A pool can take its share of the 77% piece based on the pool’s total stake and its share of the 23% piece based on the pledge of the SPO. A higher alpha parameter makes it less attractive for individual SPOs to proliferate multiple pools since they can’t be as leveraged on their available pledge and still get as big a share of the 23% piece. This also discourages Sybil Attacks. As Cardano on-chain governance progresses, these parameters will be controlled by the community.
- There will be a Cardano Goguen Summit in September. It will be hybrid digital/in-person.
- Charles is helping to bring the cryptographer who broke SHA-1 to the University of Wyoming. The Cardano funded blockchain lab there could be on the road to be a powerhouse. https://twitter.com/CaitlinLong_/status/1398290866419105802 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yiqun_Lisa_Yin
- We don’t often get to hear from the engineers behind Yoroi over at Emurgo. But, here’s a podcast with Vicente Almonacid from Emurgo. Check out 12:50 where he mentions the dApp Connector (Cardano’s Metamask Equivalent). https://twitter.com/vacuumlabs/status/1397847633696280576
- Check out this great article from Cardanians.io on the work being done at the University of Wyoming on a physical chip for transfer of private keys in day-to-day cashlike transactions. https://cardanians.io/en/cardano-can-give-crypto-a-cash-like-experience-58
- Professor Aggelos Kiayias recently dropped a video explaining exactly how Mithril (apparently neckbeard dungeon master talk for elf armor) is going to allow for Perfect Cardano (ADA) wallets that combine the ease of use and convenience of light wallets with the trustlessness of full node wallets. We also learned exactly how Mithril is going to work. https://youtu.be/LhepJFCyWRk
- In proof-of-work, bootstrapping can be done with blockheaders. This won’t do in proof-of-stake since we need information about stakeholder distribution to confirm block validity.
- Mithril fixes this by being a cryptographic construction that enables a population of stakeholders to issue a signature consistent with certain constraints.
- For Mithril to work in proof-of-stake, it needs three crucial properties: 1) it needs to enforce a threshold ratio of stakeholders before the signature is issued; 2) the pre-signature fragments must be independently verified and subject to public aggregation; and 3) it must be efficient in the sense that the final signature is of constant size and is logarithmically dependent on the # of stakeholders.
- Stakeholders will issue special Mithril keys along with the normal cryptographic key material. Then at regular intervals, full nodes will test whether they can produce a pre-signature fragment. Only a random subset of stakeholders will be eligible to produce a pre-signature fragment. When a sufficient # of pre-signature fragments have been issued by eligible stakeholders then it will be possible to aggregate the fragments into a final signature.
- This will be a checkpoint that will be verifiable with respect to previous check points all the way back to the genesis block. Such checkpoints will be cryptographic commitments of the relevant UTXOs.
- Since the checkpoints will be trustless, a light client (i.e. wallet) will only need to verify the sequence of checkpoints up to the current time to trustlessly bootstrap.
- The ecosystem is growing so fast, it’s hard to keep up with all the projects without these infographics at this point. https://twitter.com/Dr_shwetaPHD/status/1398783893638103040
- The Cardano subreddit is at 487k users. Half a million isn’t far away. https://www.reddit.com/r/cardano/

- Vitalik is saying it’s highly unlikely we see ETH 2.0 before late 2022. I’m guessing that means mid 2023 which will be after two years of Cardano slaughtering the entire ETH user base. Things are looking so bad that Vitalik says he doesn’t even like using the ETH 2.0 label anymore since he knows the changes will be more incremental. This is what early capitulation sounds like guys. https://cointelegraph.com/news/even-vitalik-buterin-is-surprised-at-just-how-long-eth2-is-taking

But, wait until they find out what Cardano can do. https://twitter.com/CaitlinLong_/status/1401334421773504517
- Nayib Bukele, President of El Salvador, also clarified that there will be no capital gains taxes on Bitcoin since it is a “legal currency” and crypto entrepreneurs will be given instant permanent residence. https://twitter.com/nayibbukele/status/1401622548396314631
- Bitcoin enthusiasm seems to be off to a great start among other Latin American politicians after the fervor around the El Salvador announcement. - Days like today in Cardano and the greater crypto space always reminds me that there have been other great adoption stories that went through periods like this.https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1407077949774442499
- It looks like the second biggest ETH stakepool or it's custody provider has lost it’s users private keys to $75MM in ETH. Cardano doesn’t have this problem. We get to keep custody of our crypto because we found a better way than slashing. https://stakehound.com/blog-post/fireblocks-eth-2-key-management-incident/ https://twitter.com/JamesSpediacci/status/1407465311180255236

- We saw segments on various newer partner entities like Nervos, Orion Protocol, and Revuto. Nervos is a UTXO proof-of-work blockchain which is building a cross-chain bridge with Cardano so that you can use your ADA on Nervos dApps and vice versa. Interoperability is a big theme for Nervos and they plan to have a working testnet within a month. Orion Protocol is building a terminal that will allow for decentralized non-custodial trading across centralized and decentralized exchanges. They say this would not require you to KYC or even have an account with any of these exchanges. Revuto is an online subscription management service that recently completed a $10MM token sale on Cardano.
- It was also revealed that Wolfram Labs, COTI, and IOHK have a three-way partnership (a ménage à tech) to build an NFT auction site. The people from Wolfram were talking about very interesting things including live minting during streaming events and automated upload to IPFS. COTI will be building out auction and bidding mechanisms in ADAPay.
- Professor Aggelos Kiayias gave us an update on research including that Ouroboros Chronos and Hydra papers have both been accepted into conferences/journals. Chronos will provide Cardano with a global concept of time that doesn’t rely on any outside timekeeper. Prof. Kiayias also pointed out that Hydra is distinguishable from other layer two protocols in that the scripting language is identical to that of the base layer in Cardano such that any dApp that can run on Cardano will run on the Hydra L2. This is a huge plus and superior to many other layer two solutions in other ecosystems where the base layer dApps will not run on layer two. Finally, the Mithril paper has been submitted for peer review. It will provide Cardano light wallets with Succinct Non-interactive Arguments of Knowledge that will give us the best of both worlds: no delays for syncing as in full node wallets while still preserving trustlessness.
- Finally, the Goguen Summit will be in late September. Sign up now at summit.cardano.org.
- The Fed is once again STRONGLY signalling to us that they are going to regulate stablecoins. The Fed is also specifically calling out Tether for the first time. You need to be thinking about how stablecoin regulation might affect your favorite Cardano DeFi or other project. https://twitter.com/CaitlinLong_/status/1408500265397985282 https://twitter.com/CaitlinLong_/status/1408572624125534212
- People are starting to realize that the Stakehound private key loss in ETH may attract unwanted regulatory attention to Ethereum 2.0 while this problem could never have occurred in Cardano. Also, only a few days later another ETH stakepool (this time SharedStake...the sixth biggest ETH Stakepool) allegedly experiences a rugpull that some are valuing at over $30MM. This is another problem that could not happen in Cardano staking. It feels like we stepped into the ring, they rang the bell, and ETH just started punching itself in the head. Eventually it’s going to KO itself. https://twitter.com/Madror7/status/1408505144984051716 https://twitter.com/JamesSpediacci/status/1407761823143645189 https://twitter.com/MeiTrades/status/1408117430656905219 https://sharedstake.medium.com/the-sharedstake-story-by-kairos-44d37aa7837a
