Protests, Protests, and More Protests, When will it End
Anchorage- In response to the footage of police brutality in Hong Kong, tens of thousands of protesters in Alaska have taken to the street demanding an end to police brutality. Supported primarily by the Black Lives Matter movement and the relatively small African-Cascadian minority in Alaska, the movement has quickly grown to encompass various different groups that disapprove of the Cascadian government's policy with regards to the police forces, and a minority of anti-corporatists calling for greater scrutiny to be placed on companies such as Microsoft and Valve.
"De-fund the police" is a common slogan used among protesters that believe that the Cascadian-Chinese police training operations are antithetical to democracy and freedom, given the harsh treatment of Hong Kong protesters. "Today its them [Hong Kongers], tomorrow it might be us" said one unnamed protestor. Unsatisfied by the government's response to the previous protests, the protest movement shows no sign of stopping unless meaningful police reform occurs in the territory. These protests have remained localized to just Alaska, with the rest of Cascadia unaffected.
In a strange, but tangentially related occurrence, it appears as though a group known as "Anonymous" has hacked the Valve Cosmetics Market by defrauding several thousand individuals' accounts and transferring the cosmetics to "dummy accounts" before selling them. The group, through encrypted means such as bitcoin, has transferred over $30,000 to their local Black Lives Matter chapter. This has somewhat eroded trust in Valve and the Cosmetics Market, with mothers everywhere scolding their 25 year old basement dwelling sons about spending hard earned cash on "useless pixels". Many are blaming Valve for a lack of safeguards, with Valve's official spokesperson simply blaming individuals for not securing their passwords, and pledging to increase security via mandatory two-factor authentication for all transactions. While Valve's Steam wallet "banking" and e-payment services remain untouched, the Cosmetics Market sees a reduction in popularity as people begin to realize it may not be the best investment in the current market. This slightly affected the protest movement.
In general, the protesters have the following demands:
-
Given the situation in Hong Kong, an end to Cascadian-Chinese police cooperation and joint training.
-
Government support for comprehensive police reform.
-
A reduction in government funding of police agencies across Alaska.
-
Increase taxes on "Evil Corporations" such as Microsoft and Valve.
