Liberty Media and the FIA are open to trying out new formats of race weekend, trying to shake things up and engage with more fans.
This is the first trial of the Sprint Qualifying. The normal qualifying session (moved to run on Friday evening) set the grid for the sprint qualifying, the finishing order after the 100km (17 lap) sprint race then sets the grid for the grand prix.
They also recently secured a major sponsor for the sprint format in the form of Crypto.com
The organizers didn't want to detract anything from the main event of the grand prix, so there is no podium or champagne for the top three from the sprint. They instead do a victory lap with interviews on this massive Crypto.com branded lorry.
Here is the winner of the Sprint Qualifying stood on the Crypto.com lorry with the Tezos sponsor on his race suit.
There was also loads more advertisement around the track
In Teds Sprint Notebook after the event, Ted Kravitz described the lorry branding as:
"The Crypto truck, whatever that is. It's the sponsor of Sprint. Whatever Crypto does. Probably something to do with Bitcoin"
Ted cracks me up
All in all amazing advertisement for Crypto.
