At 15:00 Feb 4, XT.COM Channel was starting!
We have James Burk (IT Director of the Mars Society) and Lannart Lopin (lead developer of Marscoin) as our honored guests during this time. Let’s follow them to know more about Marscoin. You guys missed this AMA but do not be sad. Let’s have a review~
(Q: Jun XT.COM CBO A: Lennart and James)
Q:
Hi, everyone! Welcome to the XT AMA Channel. I’m Jun, CBO at XT.com. I am hosting today’s AMA with Mars. Let me give a brief introduction to XT.
XT.com is the world’s first real-time social trading platform with 0% leverage interest. The XT ecosystem has over 6 million global users and with a daily transaction volume close to $5 billion. The platform has real-time indicators and tools that bring the best trading atmosphere for all users.
XT exchange’s innovative social model empowers the blockchain industry through newly developed social trading avenues, which were once not possible. XT has achieved this through a combined effort with our partners, such as Bananatok.
Today, our guest is Lennart Lopin, the Founder and Lead Developer of the Marscoin Project, and James Burk, the IT Director of the Mars Society. Let’s talk to Lennart and James to learn about the Marscoin Project.
Hello ,Lennart and James, thank you for joining us for the XT and Marscoin AMA!
A:
Hello Jun, thanks for setting up this AMA. We are glad to be here with you today and are looking forward to many questions!
Q:
Can you give our community a brief introduction behind the inspiration to build Marscoin?
A:
James:
I’m sure Lennart is here somewhere and can answer that. I’m with the Mars Society — we are the world’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to sending human beings to Mars and settling Mars as a second home for the human race. I’ve been involved with the Mars Society for over 20 years now, and Marscoin is one of the most exciting and innovative projects that have come out of the Mars movement.
Marscoin is a fork of Litecoin which is in turn a fork of Bitcoin. Marscoin was started in 2014 by Lennart and a few other volunteer developers. Recently the team has been creating several new tools such as an online wallet and blockchain explorer.
We hope to use the Marscoin blockchain to advance the research areas towards the human exploration and settlement of Mars.
The Mars Society operates two research stations — one in the Arctic circle in Canada and the other in the southwestern desert of the United States. I will be leading a mission at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah later this year and hope to utilize the Marscoin blockchain as part of our research activities.
with a Mars technology focus and the Marscoin blockchain was a key topic during our discussions. Our conferences are always fun events — at last year’s conference I got to interview Elon Musk via Zoom!
Lennart and I participated in a panel at our 2019 conference on how to create a startup company
Lennart:
It all started in 2013, after the fork of Litecoin a few more themed coins started showing up and there were heated debates about the viability of any other coin next to Bitcoin and its “network effect”. As I was heavily involved with MarsOne at the time and a big supporter of space in general in the Mars Society in particular, the topic of what crypto meant for the economy of Mars came up in endless discussions with friends.
The crucial part was the realization how the settlement of North America was achieved. The pooling of resources and promise of a joint share in the future growth of the colony were some of the important drivers of colonization of a distant and alien world at that time.
Marscoin and its vision was born. Support the settlement of Mars and explore blockchain technology for such future life off-planet.
Q:
James, In the blockchain industry, what do you think of the current state? What do you think that needs to be improved?
A:
James:
The blockchain is a transformative technology which is touching many sectors beyond finance and investing, such as manufacturing and agriculture.
My favorite illustration of the capabilities of the blockchain is: imagine yourself at a grocery store and you pick up a piece of fruit which is tied to the blockchain. By scanning a QR code on the fruit with your mobile phone, you could immediately learn where in the world that fruit was grown, how long ago, and its exact journey in time and space to the store.
I’d like to see Marscoin used in this manner at the first human settlement on Mars — as resources are developed such as creating oxygen, clean water, and methane fuel from local resources, these resources could be tracked on the Marscoin blockchain and easily exchanged using Marscoin as both a currency and storage of metadata information about the resource.
Lennart:
It’s a very powerful and transformative technology and most certainly on a colony on Mars where civilization starts with a tabula rasa many new experimental forms of organization are possible that are difficult to establish here on Earth. Personally I believe Marscoin on Mars could develop much faster the benefits of blockchain technology.
Q:
How does the Marscoin team plan to tackle these issues to reach mass adoption? Let’s start with your point on the developer experience?
A:
Lennart:
Well, one of the really amazing things about the Marscoin Foundation and our volunteers has been the efforts to focus on building out tools that support the project. From various versions of Marscoin explorers (Abe, Marssight) to one of the longest continously operating online wallets, to pools and websites, tip bots and community inspired art — I think we saw a great enthusiasm in the space community to adopt the ideas and visions of what decentralized peer-to-peer software could mean for a humanity that’s also decentralized.
James:
I worked at Microsoft for over 20 years so I’ve learned a few things about working with developers. I hope to help support the Marscoin project by making use of the latest & greatest toolsets and technologies.
Q:
It sounds like the team is building something unique and special. What are some of the exciting features / projects you guys are working on?
A:
James:
Well, we have been hard at work on a refreshed and modern website for the project that we hope to “launch” in the next few days at www.marscoin.org.
It will provide updated information about the project and links to the tools, resources and community that surrounds the Marscoin project.
Lennart:
So this year a lot of interesting projects are planned — besides the regular (a new website launch, James has more info on that) and maintenance of pools and our existing infrastructure we are also planning an implementation for decentralized transparent voting and inventory tracking that we will hopefully be able to show off at the Mars Desert Research Station later this year. The one thing that I am personally most looking forward is the moment one of our community members takes a little USB stick with the Marscoin history and establishes a node on Mars .
Q:
What is your timeline, and what can we look forward to from Marscoin?
A:
Lennart:
Marscoin has had quite a history already — our genesis block launched on the 1/1/2014! Now that the project is becoming more widely known we are excited on building tools the early Martian colony will need. Especially a larger settlement as intended by Elon Musk and SpaceX would benefit greatly from property registration systems, decentralized voting process that have been tested and inventory tracking / resource allocation.
James:
I mentioned earlier that we hope to use Marscoin blockchain as a research tool at the Mars Desert Research Station, where we practice living and working on Mars in a real-life environment that mimics Mars in many ways. We are discussing what specific research projects we can conduct, such as using the blockchain for voting, inventory management, or developing a wage-based economy amongst our crew during our 2 week mission. I’m very excited at all the possibilities that the Marscoin blockchain can enable!
Lennart:
As James mentioned, our new website will launch shortly and provide more details about our current and past milestones.
Q:
Thank you, Lennart and James, for taking the time to do this AMA with us today. It has been great learning more about Marscoin and the team behind it!
A:
James:
It’s been a pleasure, Jun! I’m excited that Marscoin is going to soon be listed on XT.com and with the first USDT pairing! Thank you to the team at XT for inviting us to do this AMA. I’d love to answer some questions from the community here.
Lennart:
Thank you for having us Jun. Really appreciate the opportunity. Anyone interested to learning more please also feel free to check out our white paper: http://www.marscoin.org/whitepaper/
