Crypto felt very close to becoming mainstream. What happened to prevent that?

Obviously I'm talking about beyond the bitcoin rage from a year ago. The true value of crypto and especially Bitcoin seems to come down to whether or not it's in demand for use in the greater economy. I've seen businesses that accept crypto, especially Bitcoin, but it seems to only be limited to medium-sized businesses in modern cities. It hasn't caught up to corporations, basically, with exception to Microsoft and other tech companies.

Why did this happen? And what kinds of events and incentives would there have to be so that there's a clear advantage to using crypto in at least some cases, which would drive demand?
