Graph and History of Top 10 Cryptocurrency Rankings - (What makes a success or a failure?)

Out of interest, I looked at data from coinmarketcap.com, which posts weekly archives of these rankings of cryptocurrencies by market cap.

I made a graph to display the data and have highlighted the current top 10 in colour and also Stellar which is #11

[Bumps chart demonstrating the cryptocurrencies ranked in the top 10 by market cap since 2013]

It’s notable how Bitcoin has remained #1 throughout cryptocurrency history and also how Litecoin, XRP, and Ethereum have been consistent top 10 cryptos since their inception.

One thing which struck me based on this data is how there seem to be notable transitions - in 2012, in 2016, and possibly also in 2020 - although this don’t seem to coincide accurately with the dates of the halvings. It makes me wonder whether these events precipitate changes in market conditions which favour the shuffling of altcoins.

The other thing which struck me is how many cryptos have been flashes in the pan or died a slow and painful death. I wonder if those people who have been around this field longer than me can explain what, if anything, the cryptos which failed had in common. I know at least one of them (BitConnect) was a scam but were the others just bad luck or were superseded by similar tokens doing a better job at the same task? It’s difficult to tell based on ranking on market cap alone whether a coin is going to be the next ETH or the next STEEM, so it will be interesting to see how Polkadot and Chainlink progress in this schematic over the next few years.

For completeness, all the current and former top 10s represented in the graph are listed below with current market cap rankings in parentheses:

Bitcoin (#1) Ethereum (#2) Tether (#3) Polkadot (#4) XRP (#5) Cardamo (#6) Chainlink (#7) Litecoin (#8) Bitcoin Cash (#9) Binance Coin (#10)
