Today, the 3rd of January, is the date to which bitcoin's genesis block (block 0) was timestamped. Many people aren't aware about the actual timeline of the events leading up to and following the genesis block, so here is a brief overview to honour the date.
Bitcoin genesis timeline:
White paper release: 31 October 2008 - Satoshi posts the Bitcoin white paper on the cypherpunks mailinglist. This leads to a lively discussion with many people being sceptical if the thing can actually work.
Genesis block timestamp: 03 January 2009, 18:15 UTC
First software release: 08 Jan 2009, 19:27 UTC - fun fact, this first version of the bitcoin software wasn't mining until at least another peer was connected to it (an indicator that Satoshi wasn't trying to mine on his own)
First block mined: 09 Jan 2009, 02:54 UTC (8 hours after the software release) - another indicator that Satoshi didn't simply mine for his own benefit, he waited for other people to join first
